  • Sept 30 p  Tonight the Clay Middle School Mustangs play over at Schoonover/Bradley field. Kick off at 6pm and it's Homecoming for all the little queens. 101.7 will sportscast the game for those unable to attend in person.
  • Sept 30 p Go Mustangs!
  • Sept 29 late p  Olivia Grace Stuber, see OBITUARY page
  • Sept. 29 p  The local health dept. is coming into the 2st century with the launch of their web site.
  • Sept 29 p Puter crapped out on ya? A+ Computer is located over at Wallback. 304 587 2667 ask for Anthony
  • Sept. 29 p Thinking back on Monday's Lizemore Ambulance meeting...
  • Sept. 29 p Taxpayers South of the Hartland bridge have a right to be upset. According to the Sheriff, our CCC Prez Slinky has no intentions of reopening their emergency ambulance service.
  • Sept. 29 p Sure sounded like Prez is putting $$$$ before quicker response time.
  • Sept. 29 p How verbose was the rotund Top Badge?  On the topic of the CCC not showing up for the most important meeting: "They don't even care enough to show up tonight!"
  • Sept. 29 p On the issue of the Lizemore service loosing their Medical Director and shutting down, again, the wittle Sheriff: "The Clay Ambulance changes Medical Directors like some change pants!"
  • Sept. 29 p The Badge encouraged everyone to contribute to a legal defense fund,  hire an attorney and sue the County Commission. He said, " Put my name on it if you want!"
  • Sept. 29 p He's got a lot of experience at costing the county lawsuit $$$.
  • Sept. 29 p When Fire Chief Trinty Vance said, "It's all political..",  he was correct
  • Sept. 29 a From the email bag:  To the person or persons who hit my vehicle on Friday, Sept. 24. Would it have been too much trouble for you to put a note on my windshield with your name and insurance information? It's a sad thing when you can't even park your vehicle in a parking lot in this town without something happening to it.  My white 2010 Chevy Avalanche (with the license plate WHITELEY)  was parked in the Prestera parking lot (the alley between Prestera and Rite Aid) it was hit on the bottom of the bed on the passenger side, sometime between the hours of 10:15 am - 4:00 pm. If anyone has any information on this or saw the incident happen please let me know. (304) 332-5018.  Thanks!   Dawn Whiteley
  • Sept. 29 a A bunch of ya have gone online and signed the petition to save the swinging bridge on Elkhurst. Here's the link one more time. Just takes a second and you don't have to sign up for any of that other stuff on their portal. CLayberry has a habit of letting good things pass by the wayside and then wish they had tried to save it. Lets not let that happen with the suspension bridge.
  • Sept. 29 a There are few public meetings the last few days of each month. That cycle starts again on Monday.
  • Sept. 29 a A dozen years ago a group of local crafters and supporters formed and set up a craft shop in this County. The Co Op was first housed in the back of the old Seneca Grill followed by a short stint in the old King Jewelry Store building, both on Main Street. While in operation, they asked the CAEZ to help with funding, some kind of grant.
  • Sept. 29 a The CAEZ Director back then took the idea, funded it, but then set up a different Co Op at the Flatwoods Mall in Braxton County. Without government support of any kind, the local Co Op went belly up in short order.
  • Sept. 29 a Called Poplar Forest, the government backed organization lasted a few years before closing its doors.   During its run, leaders of the group absolutely refused to provide its backers,  the CAEZ Bd,  financial documentation and for that matter, refused to provide ANY reports on the operation.
  • Sept. 29 a Poplar Forest is being revived again and this time in Sutton.
  • Sept. 29 a Communicator will be published on Tuesday afternoon. Yes, it's going to be late again.
  • Sept. 28 late p  Rachel Peck, 62, of Maysel,  see OBITUARY page
  • Sept. 27 late p  William Earl Harlow, see OBITUARY page
  • Sept. 27 late p We've got a new business in the county located two miles up Rush Fork Rd. H&M Auto, ATV, and Small Engine Repair is the name of the place. 304 286-2760. Welcome!
  • Sept. 27 late p  Need a job? See JOBS page
  • Sept. 27 late p  Anybody that crosses the Hartland bridge knows it's in bad shape. Weight restrictions were added many years ago. Word on the street has it that one lane restrictions will be  barreled off later this week complete with a working stoplight to funnel the traffic snarls.
  • Sept. 27 Late p Heck the old swinging bridge may last longer than the Hartland bridge!
  • Sept. 27 late p  A regional online publication has picked up the cause of saving the Elkhurst suspension bridge. Take a look see.
  • Sept. 27 late p Monday night around 100 attended the Lizemore Ambulance Service public meeting. Fire Chief Trinity Vance said all that stuff printed in newspapers was just a bunch of hooey. The part about investigations and deficiencies, all bogus.
  • Sept. 27 late p Many in the crowd were real fired up over our Larry Darryl and Darryl (not in attendance) showing no compassion for the county south of the Hartland bridge.
  • Sept. 27 late p  In attendance Top Badge fired up the crowd with several spiels including one that Commissioner Slinky had NO intention of EVER letting the Lizemore service operate in the county. According to the Sheriff, the best way to fight this is sue the county commission. He said he would even supply the group with a long list of good attorneys that would be happy to represent them for a fee.
  • Sept. 27 late p  How fired up was the crowd?? Glad you asked. They all raised their hands in support of hiring a lawyer and showing up in force during the next CCC meeting Oct. 13th.
  • Sept. 27 late p More to come clickers.
  • Sept. 27 p Want to do something to voice your concerns for the Elkhurst Swinging Bridge? Here's an online petition penned by Clay County's Tammie Marie Rose. Sign up now. The goal is 1000 names ASAP.
  • Sept. 27 a The biggie for Monday is the public information meeting being held by Lizemore Ambulance Service in the Lizemore Fire House tonight. See Event page for details.
  • Sept. 27 a Response time wise, the shut down ambulance service is much needed in Clayberry south of the Hartland bridge.  Financially, it's next to impossible to sustain.
  • Sept. 27 a 10 years ago, during one of the infamous Clay County Ambulance Authority meetings, Boardster Dave (That ain't no Jake the Snake) Pierson questioned how they could support a satellite station in the Lizemore neighborhood since the number of runs generated had NOT increased. He was right back then.
  • Sept. 27 a Today the Clay Ambulance Service is unable to pay it's own bills. They are operating in the red monthly and have been for well over a year. In addition to pee poor management and even worse oversight by the CCC, the number of runs remains too few to justify even one emergency ambulance service.
  • Sept. 27 a Budweiser, the most popular beer brand in America, is kicking off a massive promotional push with a nationwide giveaway of 500,000 free samples in US bars, pubs and restaurants in an effort to shore up an alarming erosion in sales.
  • Sept. 27 a Here's a current listing of the 15 most dangerous jobs in America.
  • Sept. 27 a On this date: Born 1722: Samuel Adams (patriot); Born 1920: William Conrad (actor);   Born 1934: Wilford Brimley (actor); 1954: The Tonight Show made its television debut with Steve Allen as host; Born 1958: Shaun Cassidy (singer); 1964: The Warren Commission Report on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy issued; 1989: Two men, Jeffrey Petkovich and Peter Debernardi, went over Niagara Falls in a barrel. They were the first pair ever to go over the falls and live. They were charged with unlawfully performing the stunt; 1998: Mark McGwire hit his 69th and 70th home runs; Died 2003: Donald O'Connor (song and dance man); and,  Died 2009: William Safire (political columnist, language maven)
  • Sept. 26 a  JoAnn (Metz) Fitzwater Osborne, 80 of Princeton, formerly of Hartland,  see OBITUARY page
  • Sept. 26 a On Monday and Tuesday the last of the 201O Apple Festival gear was stored away until next year. Courthose Square was pressure free of cotten candy and sticky soft drink spills.
  • Sept. 26 a After a tough time in jail, John Amos Morris made a reduced bond ($40,000) with court notice given that he's now aiding the Prosecutor's office in the Jamie Morris meth case. Jamie Morris and Crites remain behind bars with pending forfeiture of bond papers now in the works. Seems the Green Shirts may soon own their top of Maysel hill detachment building.
  • Sept. 26 a Wednesday morning during the meeting, the first discussion came on State Road plans to make the old swinging bridge unusable. That would be the first step in getting rid of the span. Most all at the meeting seemed supportive of keeping the thang for foot travel and tourism efforts.
  • Sept. 26 a By Wed afternoon word was out. Three CCHS football players were involved in an after JV game stunt where naked pictures were taken of one of the players sitting near the back of the bus. The staged event occurred with three coaches and a trainer on the front of the bus. Discipline has been the applied to the naughty boys but......
  • Sept. 26 a Two weeks back, coaches managed to loose 14 players after a game and now they can't seem to keep the clothes on the  guys. Clayberry, we have a problem.
  • Sept. 26 a Tommy Young Sr and Jr remain unsentenced. No hearing on Thursday. They remain behind bars but not sure what happened with the more permanent solution for the Murder Mountain duo.
  • Sept. 26 a Friday afternoon Delegate Dave Walker phoned to announce an improvement in the swinging bridge issue. After phone calls to the Gov's office and top level State Road administrators, the bridge destruction has been spared for now. According to Delegate Dave, instead of removing floor boards, the DOH will erect a chain link fence on each end of the span to keep people off.
  • Sept. 26 a Our guess clickers, we have a couple months to come up with a plan to save the much needed bridge. It's now up to us. Petitions may help. Coming to CCC or BDA meetings may help. Phone calls to the Governor wouldn't hurt either.
  • Sept. 26 a Getting across the Elk River is getting tougher. The built in 1928 Hartland bridge under went repairs last week. Traffic snarled.  The idea is to keep the thing in the air until a new one can be built in 2011.  Keep your fingers crossed.
  • Sept. 26 a The Panthers lost another one Friday night.
  • Sept. 26 a With harvest moon beautiful, Fall is here. Thursday and Friday didn't feel like it with temps well in the 90s but Sunday morning brought reality back. Gray, cloudy, chilly and heaters were turned on. Leaves are starting to show their golds and reds.
  • Sept. 26 a Fall is the most beautiful time of the year for Clayberry. It's an excellent time to attract out of county tourism $$$. Unfortunately,  it's just when activities slow down and there's no autumn fair or festival to attract those much needed foreign bucks.
  • Sept. 26 a Delegate Walker's report is now posted over on the ADVISORY page.
  • Sept. 24 p  First the bad news. The CHS Panthers went down to defeat tonight. Give you the score but when you're talking 30 points, why bother.
  • Sept. 24 p  Now some good news. After talking with the Gov's office followed by the State Road Commissioner, Friday afternoon Delegate Dave Walker had some good news to announce.
  • Sept. 24 p According to Walker, the State Road Big Cheese told local crews to hold off ripping the wooden walkway from the old Swinging Bridge. Instead, a tall chain link fence and No Trespassing signs will be added to each end of the historic span. That means we have a little time clickers.
  • Sept. 24 p For now, the State folks are willing to give us a little time to come up with a game plan to save, convert,  the structure into some kind of tourism draw for the county.
  • Sept. 24 p For those that use the bridge to cross the river, you're out of luck until local leaders get their heads out the sand and get something started.
  • Sept. 24 p  Have you picked up your copy of The Communicator? Darn good reading.
  • Sept. 24 p Anybody else getting emails of the naked high schooler on the school bus?
  • Sept. 24 Last Monday after a CCHS JV game, a player went in the buff while another snapped the images. There was no mention of the incident during the last School Board meeting. Bet Super Kenneth Tanner was on pins and needles worrying about if the subject would come up.
  • Sept. 24 p It didn't.
  • Sept. 24 p Sure seems like three coaches and a trainer would be enough adult supervision to keep everyone's clothes zipped up , buttoned, and on. But it wasn't!
  • Sept. 24 a From the email bag: Happy Birthday Brad, where ever you are.  Mommy misses you, and will always love you..
  • Sept. 24 a Need to de-dummy? New class schedule for the community college behind their homepage button.
  • Sept. 24 a Tonight the Panthers take on Herbert Hoover in home court action over at Schoonover Bradley field. They're looking to continue the streak of one  winning game in a row. 101.7 FM will be sportscasting the game.
  • Sept. 24 a By the way, the non profit station got enough sponsors to make a go of it for the entire CCHS season and CMS games. Great!
  • Sept. 24 a Not up for football action? Solomon's Secret outdoor drama continues tonight and Saturday over at the campground. See EVENTS page for more
  • Sept. 24 a Lots of media hype on corporate tea party candidate Christine O'Donnell supposedly winning the Delaware race. Delaware voters are forced to use Guardian touch screen machines except for early voting time.  On the touch screen machines, there is absolutely NO paper trail.
  • Sept. 24 a When early voting paper ballots were counted, it went 54 .7% for Castle and 45.3% for O'Donnell. Interesting to note, that was the exact opposite % when the electronic votes were tallied.
  • Sept. 24 a  Did anyone on main stream media tell you O'Donnell is a billionaire? She is. We may be seeing the first round of electing people to represent corporations compliments the recent US Supreme Court decision giving full free speech rights to corporations.
  • Sept. 24 a  Just recently, in Clay Co Kentucky where touch screen machines are used, the county clerk, county judge, school superintendent and other high ranking election officials were found guilty of election fraud after years of throwing elections. How did they do it? After a voter left the polling booth, the election officials went in and retouched the machines.
  • Sept. 24 a Welcome to 1984 just a few decades late.

  • Sept. 23 a The plan was to see Tommy Young Sr and Jr sentenced this afternoon at 1:30pm. A quick check of the Fed Court web site this morning and Poof! No sentencing scheduled for today.
  • Sept. 23 a If you look over on the West Virginia Supreme Court site, there's a motion conference scheduled for today:  Petitioner in State ex rel. John Amos Morris v. The Honorable Mitchell H. King, Magistrate, No. 101053, seeks a writ of prohibition contending that his pre-trial bond was "illegally revoked." . Barbara Schamberger is the attorney for John Amos. Jim Samples will represent Magistrate Mike King. Not sure if that Big  Robe hearing will happen, Bond was reduced to $40,000 on John Amos and he is now out walking around.
  • Sept. 23 a  Also noticed this on the Big Robe docket:    Kimberly Thomas v. Joseph B. Morris - No. 100727. Petitioner appeals from the circuit court’s order affirming the decision of the family court to issue a domestic violence protective order for 180 days against petitioner. Petitioner states that he was denied the opportunity to present evidence so as to refute respondent’s allegations. Petitioner seeks a remand to the family court with instructions to permit both petitioner and respondent the opportunity to present relevant testimony.
  • Sept. 23 a  The Nelson family estate feud will be before the WV Big Robes on Oct 12th:   Sharon James and Glen Nelson v. Vivian Knotts and Betty Nelson - 35482 - Petitioners Vivian Knotts and Betty Nelson, appeal from the Final Order of the Clay County Circuit Court which denied their Motion for Judgment Notwithstanding the Verdict, or in the alternative, Motion for a New trial. Petitioners were the defendants and co-executrixes of the Estate in an action to set aside and revoke the granting of probate of the Last Will and Testament of Irene T. Nelson. A Clay County jury found that the decedent lacked testamentary capacity at the time of the execution of her will on July 29, 2005, and that the Will was the result of undue influence.

  • Sept. 23 a In the Stumpy Thumpy Suit against  local Black Shirts, Robert Belt, Jeff Ryder and Puffy the Sheriff, Stump Morton will have a final settlement conference Nov 29th. If he doesn't settle for  a quarter million or better (Our guess), the trial begins on the 30th at 9:30 am before Judge Copenhaver.
  • Sept. 23 a Any way you look at it, our out of control Sheriff and sidekicks are costing the county a lot of $$$$.
  • Sept. 22 p  From the email bag:  Clay County Little League has been selling tickets for a gun raffle fundraiser where they will be giving away 25 guns in November. The tickets cost $20 each and one ticket will enter you for a drawing on every individual gun. We are selling only 1000 tickets for

  • this raffle and only have approximately 100 unsold tickets left. The tickets will be on sale at the varsity football game Friday night (9/24) at the High School end entrance for anyone who is interested in purchasing a ticket.
  • Sept. 22 p  A couple years back the County Commission OK'd massive property tax increases for private owners while reducing the values on Big Coal. After the deal was reported in The Communicator and after all the parcels were appealed by the ace cub reporter, $13m in tax increases were removed.
  • Sept. 22 p Well... all the rates were suppose ot have been rolled back.
  • Sept. 22 p   This morning Kyle Legg told the CCC his mineral tax values went from  $400 to $14,000 and then $39,000 all on the same small chunk of coal. Larry Darryl and Darryl voted to reduced the burden back to $336.
  • Sept. 22 p  Delegate Dave Walker attended the Commission meeting and spoke on saving the Swinging Bridge at Elkhurst. He said a citizen's petition wouldn't hurt anything.
  • Sept. 22 p How about clickers? Anybody willing to go around and collect signatures to save the old bridge? It's up to you.
  • Sept. 22 p  For those outside the region, the cable suspension bridge is the only way across the Elk River for several miles in any direction. There's another reason for preservation.
  • Sept. 22 p  Because of it's age and style, it can be a tourism draw for bikers and hikers.
  • Sept. 22 p According to Delegate Dave Walker, construction on new Hartland and Camp Creek bridges will begin in 2011.
  • Sept. 22 p Yesterday in Circuit Court land, bond was reduced from $100,000 to a more manageable $40,000 for John Amos Morris. who was arrested with Jamie Morris and a Crites subject (charged with meth manufacturing)  back in the Spring. All three flunked pee tests, lost bond, and were put back in the slammer.
  • Sept. 22 p More interesting, the Prosecutor made public that John Amos was "cooperating" with the state. Translation: He rolled.
  • Sept. 22 p Me thinks Jamie Morris is in deep doodoo.
  • Sept. 22 p  Joe and Darlene Morris went bond on all three to the tune of $300,000.00 secured with property. That property includes the Green Shirt barracks at Maysel.
  • Sept. 22 p Forfeiture papers have been filed with the court. It could turn out that the Green Shirts could end up owning instead of renting their office digs!
  • Sept. 22 a Happy hump day Wed morning. After getting the Communicator out the door Tuesday afternoon, we took a much needed 12 hour recovery sleep.

  • Sept. 18 a Neighbors in the Elkherst section of the county are starting to talk about a new sign placed on the old swinging bridge that crosses the Elk. Put there by State Road crews last week, sounds like the potential tourism draw is ready to be torn down or at least be made "inaccessible" in 20 days.

  • Sept. 12 p   Thomas Allen (Tom) Scott , 70 of Dog Run, see OBITUARY page
  • Sept. 12 p Looking back..... All full time school employees received a $250 bonus during the Monday night Sept. 6th Bd meeting. That raise was something the old Bd and Somber Super were dead set against. With two new Boardsters and O Gene now in office, the votes were there to give what is considered rightfully theirs complements a Senate bill passed four fiscal years ago.
  • Sept. 12 p The new Board came to power proclaiming a new openness and above board plans for decision making. Still, the old Pentagon way remains. Like over at CCHS somehow, someway , without a vote, computer teacher Randy Cantrell moved into an administrative counselor's office and out of the classroom without  a vote by the Board.
  • Sept. 12 p  At taxpayer expense Smokin Joe and the Legislature are coughing up  $1/2 m to pay for an audit to discover if local school operations are  a bit top heavy. A great big Hmmmmmmmmmm in the works
  • Sept. 12 p During  Wed's CCC meeting Commissioner Pierson made public they had received just one complaint against the Top Badge related to guns in the evidence locker coming up missing, sold, destroyed, or otherwise not available for retrieval by the rightful owner. That one person with the backbone to stand up is Mary Workman.
  • Sept. 12 p A Georgia contractor moved the was memorial monument to their new location in front of the new (35 year old) Courthouse. Wilson Funeral Home crews set about to restore some of the damage to the lettering of the granite stones. Soon the 24 hour a day lighting will be added.

  • Sept. 12 p Mid day Saturday, a quiet group of volunteers, the Buffalo Creek Watershed Assoc, held a free picnic to generate support for cleaning the floaters and other nasties out of the potentially beautiful Buffalo. When cleaned and stocked with trout, that small stream can become another good reason for spending a weekend in Clayberry.
  • Sept. 12 p  A train ride, campground, dirt track racing, Saturday night music shows, Lake Sampson, trout fishing, and the mighty Elk, if we could just pull it all together, KaChing is just around the corner.
  • Sept. 12 p Saturday was the 9th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the USA. We paid little attention to the date and even less attention to the obvious discrepancies in the official story of what happened that day and the much later fall of the third tower (WTC7, 40 stories tall) 15 hours later.
  • Sept. 12 p Fox right wing entertainment  spent their day hyping up a small group of radical terrorist Christians and their attempts to become famous by burning a Muslim holy book. While other networks fueled the frenzy, it was the Republicrat party's  network that led the field.
  • Sept. 12 p With mid Sept. here, we pulled dried up tomato vines, dead hostas, and spindly impatients from the ground. We did that amid 1000's of yeller jackets having at the fallen apples.
  • Sept. 12 p In downtown Clay the first ever successful BDA project got underway. With $2400 to use, local contractors set about to pressure wash storefronts. With the Big Apple coming in four days, the place looks better.

  • Sept. 10 p Talking heads are already revisiting Sept. 11 , 2001. So far there has been no mention of the various conspiracy theories. Some of em at least make you wonder.
  • Sept. 10 p Like, there were actually three World Trade Centers that went down nine years ago. The third, building 7, was located several blocks from the two that were hit by the airliners. 15 hours later, WTC7 fell tot he ground just like the two often shown on TV.
  • Sept. 10 p A look at that undamaged building and its implosion sure makes many wonder. Here's a U Tube example.  Here's a revealing write up.
  • Sept. 10 a Those ^^##!! Demorats are nothing but spend spend spend. They're like that every time they're in office.

  • Sept. 9 a Those that wait long periods for service may have another opinion.
  • Sept. 9 a The problem is management.
  •  Sept. 9 a This site and The Communicator have been encouraging those that have had guns confiscated by the Sheriff and not returned to em, to file a written complaint with the County Commission. Yesterday during their meeting, Commissioner Mike Pierson said he had received just complaint and it has been forwarded to the Prosecutor for investigation.
  • Sept. 9 a One complaint.
  • Sept. 9 a Thanks Mary Workman for having the gonads to do what's right.
  • Sept. 9 a Clay Development Corporation (CDC) is a top secret family run empire operating out of the taxpayers' wallets. So secret even their Board meetings are closed to the public. So secret, employees have been fired for asking questions. So secret, Boardsters are removed for questioning actions of the in charge of the empire clan. Often CDC ends up in Court on the loosing side. Just a year ago a former employee won a whistleblower suit tot he tune of over $200,000.
  • Sept. 9 a It's hard to keep a secret in County Clay. Word gets out no matter the level of secrecy employed. Word has it that CDC "laid off" employees because they're short on funds. Pay checks are in real jeopardy. With lots of Federal $$$ available for use, you have to wonder, what happened to the $$$.
  • Sept. 8 p Last week's Boil Water Order for Spread Park to Ivydale Booster customers has been lifted
  • Sept. 8 a County Commission meets this morning at 10 am The agenda calls for a discussion on the investigation into our Top Badge taking property ( guns) from individuals and not returning them.

  • Sept. 8 a Last during the Sch Bd meeting, all full time school employees were awarded  a $250 salary increase across the Bd. • Sept. 6 a Jean Boggs, 87, formerly of Big Otter, see OBITUARY page
  • Sept. 6 a Listed below are two boil water orders still in place from last Friday

  • Sept. 6 a Add to those two, a third. The areas that are affected are as follows:  Big and Little Pigeon Roads_ ONLY (Area of Water System)    CONDITIONS INDICATE THERE IS A HIGH PROBABILITY THAT YOUR WATER IS CONTAMINATED. TESTING HAS NOT OCCURRED TO CONFIRM OR DENY THE PRESENCE OF  CONTAMINATION IN YOUR WATER. What should I do?  DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, bathing, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. What happened? What is being done?  An 8 in main line break, crew is currently repairing.
  • Sept. 6 a On this lovely holiday Monday, this site is in shutdown mode while we type type type on Tuesday's edition of the Communicator. No updates 'til we get it out the door around 4pm tomorrow.
  • Sept. 5 a HAPPY BIRTHDAY WHITNEY HOLLEY!!
  • Sept. 5 a This is the holiday weekend. A brief update as we head over to the Taste of Clay and then tonight's WYAP Karaoke contest and Big Concert featuring Joe Nutter and Variety Pack
  • Sept. 5 a West Virginia spends nearly half of its total general revenue budget on public education, and that the state ranks fourth in per-capita personal income spent on education.
  • Sept. 5 a Most of the county is aware of the absolute out of control spending in the school system. The Communicator has written on the subject for 15 years.  Finally, Charleston is doing something about it. From Phil Kabler of the Charleston Gazette:  A comprehensive audit of state spending on public education should begin later this year ... The audit would be a "comprehensive examination of state spending on primary and secondary education," including financial audits of the state Department of Education, the Department of Education and the Arts, the Center for Professional Development, the state Board of Education, the eight Regional Education Service Agencies and the 55 county boards of education.
  • Sept. 5 a Judy Hale said WVFT members first raised the issue of conducting an audit, suggesting that their school systems were "top heavy" with spending at the administrative levels.
  • Sept. 5 a Everybody , all together, Well Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
  • Sept. 5 a  We're pretty gullible clickers, but it looks like the long stalled (worthless for the most part)  Clay County Business Development Authority accomplished something last week during their public meeting. With new by laws in place the group voted to purchase the old State Road garage at Two Run for $1. YEars ago that was an option the volunteers said they weren't interested in. How sad.
  • Sept. 5 a It became public that Clayberry will participate in some kind of already funded Elk River "Water Trail" program designed to highlight the tourism aspects of the long under used regional draw.   Oh sure some are going to complain "those darn yankees are going to take my best fishing hole!". In response, tough S##! If County Clay is going to stay afloat, we must develop tourism as our industry of the future.
  • Sept. 5 a  Also from the BDA meeting, the group is contracting with local power washing services and offering downtown Clay businesses a free wash of their store fronts before the Big Apple arrives in two weeks. Call Stephanie Taylor or Amanda Moore to get in line for the first come first served opportunity.
  • Sept. 5 a And during the public gathering, it was mentioned, that the WV National Guard has decided to include a Clay County site in t heir long range plans to build a training facility. Such ventures normally provide local businesses with increased revenues something County Clay is in real need of.
  • Sept. 5 aWe started something when we said that the CCHS Panthers were ready to capture a new title, the longest loosing streak in the state. I think we were a bit premature.
  • Sept. 5 a Emails included that the record is 58 losses in a row instead of CCHS's 26: I  had emailed a guy from the parkersburg news and sentinel to see if he knew the record for most consecutive losses.  i just opened up his email and he told me that the record (as far as he knew) was 58 straight losses by Cameron High School.  so, it doesn't look like Clay High is close to that record.
  • Sept. 5 a Others    From Wiki: Jefferson Davis High School in Houston Texas Lost 80 games in a row breaking the streak on Oct 23, 1993 Sturgis Scoopers (Sturgis High School) in Sturgis, South Dakota lost 78 games in a row from...
  • Sept. 5 a From over at Bishop Donahue High School in Mechen West Virginia from coach John Durdines, My biggest accomplishment is breaking the school’s 33 game losing streak vs. Conotton Valley 20-13
  • Sept. 5 a Thanks for all the emails.
  • Sept. 5 a The Panthers lost their second game of the season Friday night BUT, the second half looked much improved and they nearly pulled an upset in the final four minutes. With Tug Valley and Van in the schedule this season, we have a chance at a couple wins.
  • Sept. 5 a  We saw a big change in the last couple days. On Thursday the temp hover around 100 degrees. Saturday morning we had jackets and sweaters wrapped around us. Heaters were turned on Saturday night. It got chilly willy.
  • Sept. 5 a Outside the first colors of fall came. With weeds covering garden spots and flower beds all but brushed over, oranges and reds started to show.
  • Sept. 5 a Walking in the yard includes squishing fallen apples. Yellow Jackets are working the last of the rotting tomatoes.
  • Sept. 5 a The radio station hosted their Small Town America Labor Day Celebration. Something was different. During the Kiddie Carnival and even the main concert, the crowd was much much smaller than during earlier events. Maybe other activities pulled from the crowd in other directions but but...
  • Sept. 5 a There may be another answer. With the depression worsening, and even just a  few days into the new govt checks cycle, there isn't enough $$$ to handle the cost of gas, munchies, and such. Every penny is now going to "get by", to to try and pay the increased electric bills for instance.
  • Sept. 5 a How are we going to  make it? We're  going to do without at the least.
  • Sept. 4 a The Panthers didn't win last night. Braxton took it 20 to 15. BUT! Clay put on a heck of a second half. In the last couple minutes we had a real opportunity to come from behind and snatch it from nasty ole Braxton. Didn't turn out for us but one heck of a showing.
  • Sept. 4 a FYI   The longest high school football winning streak is by De La Salle High School in Concord, California -- 151 wins in 12 years.
  • Sept. 4 a  The longest high school football losing streak is 82 losses in a row from 1990-99, by Glascock County High School in Georgia. Runnerup is Sturgis High in South Dakota with a losing streak of 79 games in a row from 1997 to 2006.
  • Sept. 4 a FYI From the Associated press Oct 1 2006: Delbarton, WV - Paul McCoy of Matewan High School ran for 658 yards in a 64-0 win against Burch, but, believe it or not, may not have set a national record with his feat. The total tops the National Federation of State High School Association's listed record of 619 yards set by Ronney Jenkins of Oxnard, CA, in 1995. But high school historian Doug Huff said the recognized record is 739 yards by John Giannantonio of Netcong, NJ, in 1950 against Mountain Lakes.
  • Sept. 4 a In the way of local stats, we're still trying to find the official longest West Virginia high school loosing streak stats. CAn anybody help? Please email with link.
  • Sept. 4 a The Sec of State's office has a WV Voters Hall of Fame listing those that not missed an election for more than 50 years. Clayberry has a few mentions on that web posting including O Gene King.

  • Sept. 3 2:30pm  From Clay Roane PSD:  BOIL YOUR WATER BEFORE USING  On _9/3/2010__, a water problem occurred on The Procious Straight, Rt 4, Procious WV, causing contamination of your water.  The areas that are affected are as follows: Paxton Rd, Procious Straight to Horners Fork Church and Reed Fork Rd,    CONDITIONS INDICATE THERE IS A PROBABILITY THT YOUR WATER IS CONTAMINATED. Boling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.      We will inform you when you no longer need to boil your water.  We anticipate resolving the problem within __96 hours

  • Sept. 3 a No you're not dreaming, there's more.
  • Sept. 3 a With a quarrel, I mean a quorum, in place, the group voted to budget $$$ and offer to pressure wash storefronts in downtown Clay. AND, to do the clean up job before the Big Apple in just two weeks.
  • Sept. 3 a They only budgeted enough loot to hose down maybe a dozen building fronts (no charge to the owner or renter), but that's a start.
  • Sept. 3 a Need your store front pressure washed? Contact Eco Dev Director Amanda Moore ASAP. It's first come first served until the money runs out.
  • Sept. 2 p The radio station is hosting the Small Town America Labor Day Celebration this weekend. If you have a non profit group in need of a fundraiser.... 101.7FM needs someone to do concessions four hours Saturday and four hours Sunday evening. With a good crowd and dry weather, your non profit should be able to raise about $100 per day. If interested email them at wyap@frontiernet.net.
