October 2007 News
Oct. 31 pm The newbee Commissioner,
ole what's his name, has a long history with the school system. Based on
past performance, over there, who gets the job is always decided before
the job description is ever written. It's important to keep the "correct"
players on board. With all Yes people on board, life is much easier.
Oct. 31 pm When he was campaigning
for office, the Slinkster said who could bring in millions of grant dollars
for the county. With 10 months under his belt, so far that hasn't
happened. He has managed to come up with a $10,000 grant. That grant will
provide a manual on how the Apple Festival is suppose to operate, design
a web site for em, and train someone on how to keep the finances
of the group. Instead of using some of the volunteers who have worked for
34 years making the Big Apple the most successful event in the county,
the Slinkmiester included in the grant application a paid position, $7000.
That $7000 over 6 months will go to a "consultant". The money earmarked
for a new web site... well, they already have a very attractive site which
is kept up to date and that's more than can be said for ANY other local
govt site. As for keeping the finances, the consultant hired must use the
"Quick" books software.
Oct. 31 pm The complete job notice,
posting, is now over on our JOBS page. Deadline for submitting a resume
is Nov. 13th at 3pm.
Oct. 31 pm Here's our online
question. Who was the "consultant" job, made for, tailored for? Email in
your answers ASAP.

Oct. 29 late pm Real news. Real
views. The Communicator made it to news stands around 4pm today. Our above
the fold story covers the PSC deal for Mountaineer Gas town Habjan Sr's
utility companies here in Clay. The deal includes some real $ for the guy
that let us down so bad last winter and the one before and the one...
Oct. 29 pm Tuesday night is Trick

kids in costume from 6 to 7pm. Just go the bottom of our homepage and click
web cam.
Oct. 29 pm Halloween is also
one of the best nights to listen to scanner traffic. True the last couple
years have been pretty quiet affairs....never know when tricksters will
make some listening pleasure.
Oct. 29 am Donnie Welch was to
be sentenced for his part in trying to blow up our Sheriff in 2005. Strong
manuevering on the part of their defense team, John Mitchell Sr and sidekick
Bill Murray delayed that phase of the trial. Here's the
link on the Hurherald site.
Oct. 29 pm Before Tuesday night's fun,
how about doing something nice. The State of WV has a contest where locals
submit video promoting the travel fun side of West Virginia. Clay Elementary's
Jesse Stephenson has submitted a great offering which includes a bunch
of views in Clayberry. Clicking on the link helps him win the big prize,
a new vehicle. Doesn't take long and worth a look. Once on the WV
is Calling web site find the "Beauty Within" movie icon on the right
and have a look see.

Oct. 28 pm No updates until we get
the Communicator out the door sometime Monday afternoon.

Oct. 27 am The Clay Panthers had a
tough time last night with the Tyler County team. 12 seconds into the game,
Tyler had their first of many touchdowns. I don't there was a time Tyler
didn't score when they had the ball. Final 51 to zip.
Oct. 27 This just in from Morgantown:
A seven-year old boy was at the center of a Monongalia County courtroom
drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should
have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his
parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping
with child custody law and regulation requiring that family unity
be maintained to the highest degree possible. The boy surprised the
court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents
and he adamantly refused to live with her.
When the judge
then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried
and said that they also beat him. After considering the remainder
of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence
was apparently a way of life among them; the judge took the unprecedented
step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.
After two recesses to check legal references and confer with the
child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to The
Marshall University Thundering Herd, whom the boy firmly believes are not
capable of beating anyone.
Oct. 27 am The rain is suppose to leave
the area today. Get out and have some fun this weekend. For our far away

Oct. 26 pm That wasn't
the case at high noon Thursday. Feds came in and made an arrest. Clad in

and hauled away.
Oct. 26 pm Asking around, James was
the guy seen walking to and from, bearded, and in his 50's.

a clue.

working on for the next edition of Clay County's only source of news and
views.

Oct. 25 am FYI from associated content:
Community Associated Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA)
This is a huge name for a tiny bacteria that causes horrendous damage and
many times, even death. MRSA is resistant to treatment with antibiotics
related to penicillin. The name 'community Associated' in the name of this
infection is because this particular bacterium, that was first found in
infections in hospitals, is now a new strain that spreads from person to
person in the community and children are particularly susceptible.
Many times, this infection involves athletes, but there have been cases
involving non-athletes too. The skin infection starts as a small bump that
looks like a pimple or spider bite which becomes redder and develops pus
drainage. Usually staph infections are treated by penicillin,
but this particular strain has become resistant to penicillin and all its
forms. Methicillin was an antibiotic that was used many years ago to treat
patients with staphylococcus aureus infections and it was used so much
that the bacteria became resistant....
Oct. 25 am Much has been said about
a super bug, Mersa, hitting many areas of the country. Yesterday we received
calls on that treatment resistant bug at Clay Middle School. One lady said
lots of kids had it.
Oct. 25 am County Health Officer Jay
Carper said he too had received a bunch of phone calls. According to Carper
there have been NO reportable diseases reported to him; medical pros are
required to do so; and, other than the usual staph infections, there ain't
no Mersa.
Oct. 25 am Yesterday's County Commission
meeting was a pretty good one. Here's a couple notes from that gathering.
First Lizemore Fire Dept's new ambulance
Oct. 25 am Earl Elliot from LVFD asked
the CCC to pen a letter allowing the 911 Communications Center to dispatch
their new ambulance. The elected folks were reluctant to do so. They
said there needed to be a bunch more paperwork completed before they would
sign the inclusion letter. LVFD members disputed the "more documents needed"
statement. Cookie Johnson said everything was completed and all they needed
was that letter. So did Me Elliot.
Oct. 25 am Didn't happen. The CCC said
they wanted to proceed cautiously and wanted everything in order, in writing,
before they would proceed. Commissioner Ole What's His Name, Slinky, said
he didn't think there would be enough "runs" to support the new ambulance
service.
Oct. 25 am With election year just
around the corner, everyone knows, the CCC has to sign the letter or risk
losing every vote South of the Hartland bridge.
Oct. 25 am Saving the old Dundon
bridge has become a battle cry for many in the county. CAEZ Director Connie
Lupardus returned to the Commission yesterday in another attempt to preserve
the old span for inclusion in a town wide walking trail. Each time she
comes, something new is either added or taken away. Yesterday there was
no mention of the CCC being just a "pass thru" agency. Instead she asked
them to take ownership and allow the CAEZ to lease the holding from them.
She said clauses could be added to the lease relieving the county of
liability issues.
Oct. 25 am Nearly two months
ago the CCC voted unanimously NOT to get involved with saving the bridge.
After a long discussion, sometimes getting an itsy bit testy at times,
it appears little progress was made in saving the thang.
Oct. 25 am No matter what happens,
you gotta give Big Lup an A++ for dogged determination and stamina.
Oct. 25 am We've got an update coming
tonight on last week's story on Badges stopping a Methodist church service,
gospel sing, out at Tom Auxier's farm. Did you know you can get 6
months in the slammer for messing with a church service? Check back
late tonight for details.
Oct. 25 am The rain continues
in Clayberry. So does the gloom: West Virginia's average income has ranked
either 48th or 49th in the nation for the last two decades. Latest figures
indicate that the average West Virginian earns nearly $8,500 less than
the average worker in other states. Russell S. Sobel, Unleashing Capitalism:
Why prosperity stops at the West Virginia border and how to fix it.
Oct. 25 am 15.5% of West Virginia
families live below the federal poverty line, a nearly 63% difference from
the national average. "Census Bureau report details state's various rankings,"
The Charleston Gazette, February 15, 2007.
Oct. 25 am West Virginia's "closed
for business" climate may hit our children the hardest. One recent national
study found that in 2005, 39% of West Virginia's children lived in homes
"where no parent has full-time, year-round employment," a statistic that
ranks us 5th worst in the nation. "Adults with low educational skills hamper
W.Va. economy," The Associated Press, July 29, 2007.
Oct. 25 am One reason West Virginians
don't make as much is because they don't have the job opportunities that
exist in other states. Recent Census Bureau figures indicate that more
businesses have closed than opened in West Virginia of late. While the
nation as a whole experienced a growth in job providers, our state lost
1,000 more job providers than it gained. "Census Bureau report details
state's various rankings," The Charleston Gazette, February 15, 2007.
Oct. 25 am The federal Bureau
of Economic Analysis released a study showing that West Virginia's Gross
Domestic Product increased by only 0.6% between 2005 and 2006, a rate of
growth which is second worst in the nation. "By the Numbers," The State
Journal, June 15, 2007

Oct. 24 am Clay County Commission
meets Wed morning at 10 am. They've got a big long list of stuff ta do.
With Evelyne McLaughlin sporting a petition containing hundreds of names,
maybe most interesting agenda item yet another session on on trying to
save the old Dundon bridge.
Oct. 24 am It's suppose to be
a rainy cold morning. Why not spend it at a public meeting? Warm, dry,
and nice soft seats.
Oct. 24 am From the email bag:
I just wanted to say thank you for posting my earlier email about the lost
boxer puppy. I received a phone call this morning from one of your
readers informing me that they had found her. I picked her up and
brought her home to two very happy little girls. Again, thank you
and I will definitely remember this in the future when you ask for donations:)

Oct. 24 am On this gloomy day
some stats....
Oct. 24 am One recent publication
indicates that West Virginia has suffered through the closing of 147 manufacturing
companies and a loss of more than 1,500 manufacturing jobs since June 2006.
"Survey: Manufacturing jobs in W.Va. continue to decline," Huntington Herald-Dispatch,
August 17, 2007.
Oct. 24 am A West Virginia University
economist indicated that our state has lost approximately 2,200 manufacturing
jobs during the first three months of this year, statistics that the Huntington
Herald-Dispatch noted "run counter to Gov. Joe Manchin's 'Open for Business'
mantra," "Survey: Manufacturing jobs in W.Va. continue to decline," Huntington
Herald-Dispatch, August 17, 2007.
Oct. 24 am In twenty years, W.Va.
lost nearly 42% of its chemical jobs, even though chemical industry employment
nationwide dropped by only about 8%. "Chemical Makers Want to See Changes
in State," The State Journal, April 30, 2004
Oct. 24 am In 2001, Dow
Chemical provided West Virginians with 2,434 jobs. That number will have
dropped to 563 jobs by the year 2009. "Dow Chemical to cut more than one-third
of W.Va. jobs," The Associated Press, March 30, 2006.
Oct. 24 am Politicians are pointing
to record low unemployment figures as a sign that West Virginia is "open
for business." However, as the director of West Virginia University's Bureau
of Business and Economic Research notes, "the unemployment rate is not
a very good indicator of the standard of living in a region or a state."
George Hohmann, "State unemployment at record low, but jobs in service
sector, not manufacturing," Charleston Daily Mail, September 21, 2007.
Oct. 24 am Also.... That's because
low unemployment does not necessarily equal good jobs or a good economy.
With the sharp decline of available jobs in West Virginia's goods-producing
sector, more and more of our citizens have had to find jobs in the retail
industry. Those jobs aren't as high-paying as the jobs that West Virginia
has lost over the years. "Fewer state residents involved in producing goods
sold outside the state means less 'new money,' and ultimately, less wealth
creation." Dave Peyton, "West Virginia economics don't work," Charleston
Daily Mail, September 24, 2007
Oct. 24 am Now if those stats don't
bring you down, nothing will.
Oct. 24 am Go back to eating your biscuit.
Oct. 23 pm Senator Jay is in
the news. Jay heads the Senate Intel Committee and amazingly, out of no
where, received nearly $50,000 from phone companies supportive of his stance
on limiting their liability. Here's the New
York Times report. Better read it today, the NYT restricts after
the first day.
Oct. 23 pm Picked up by the Dog Catcher

Lab mix, male, Big Otter.
Oct. 23 pm Lizemore Fire Dept. received
their brand new ambulance yesterday. Clay Ambulance Service should receive
their new unit this Thursday.
Oct. 23 pm Yesterday as a tough day
for the Clay Ambulance Service. Three of their trucks were laid up for
repairs.
Oct. 23 pm From the County Clerk's
office: There are 6552 voters in Clay County. Break down: 4802 Demorats;
1296 Republicats; 431 no party affiliations; 16 independents;
2 Libertarians, 3 Mountain Party; 3 "others".
Oct. 23 pm On the official roster
there is a whole host of unique parties. Everything from the Socialists
to the Jesus party. Yes, there is a Jesus party!
Oct. 23 pm For a number of years the
Republicats have allowed independent voters to vote for their candidates.
This year the Demorats and the Mountain party are doing the same thang.
During the 08 primary, if your registered as an independent you can
request a ballot and vote for whomever you want.
Oct. 23 pm So much for the closed
primary season in West Virginia
Oct. 23 am Some emails we hate, from
the peachtreeD@aol.com email bag: Homer Denver Graham III (Buddy) 20, of
Monroe, NC formally of Clay, WV died in a tragic single vehicle accident
in NC Sunday night. Homer is the son of Homer Graham Jr who was the band
director at CCHS for years and Linda Graham who was a former teacher at
Vally Fork Elementary. He is also the grandson of the late Denver Walker
who was the mayor of Clay for several years and Arlene Walker who still
resides in Clay, WV. He is also the brother of Aaron Williams who resides
in the Dog Run area of Clay. Arrangements are incomplete as of this time.

Oct. 21 am It's Fall in Clay County
West Virginia. Brilliant reds and golds are just beginning to peak. Our
guess, this is the week to come see Fall Foliage at its best. Bring
your camper and spend some time at the JG Bradley Campground. Better yet,
gives Jeannie's Real Estate a call for a long term commitment to the county
of Clay.
Oct. 21 am This time of year
brings out the hunters. For many it's a time to get the family together
to tell old stories and make some new ones. It's a tradition.
Oct. 21 am With all of Berringer
Trust (99,000 acres) mine land closed to the public, a tradition is fading.
Hills and hollows were the places many called home during the fall hunting
season, Dads and sons, uncles and cousins. With costly private hunting
clubs posting thousands of Berringer acres, many locals have fewer or no
places to hunt. No different than tearing down some other piece of
history, that ain't progress.
Oct. 21 am Speaking of history, Evelyne
McLaughlin started up a petition to save the old Dundon bridge. Within
two days, she had over 300 names in favor of keeping the historic structure.
Oct. 21 am Also coming into the 21st
century, security cameras went into use around the Courthouse. A couple
more cameras are planned for the network. With much of the B&Es occurring
down river of the Courthouse, would it make more sense to put Big Brother
where the crime's going on?
Oct. 21 am Two great big outdoor mounted
air conditioning units were swiped from behind the old skate land.
Oct. 21 am Senator Jay made a
big speech on getting out of Iraq. The transcript is posted over on our
ADVISORY page. Go Jay!
Oct. 21 am There have been 4,131
coalition deaths -- 3,830 Americans, two Australians, 171 Britons, 13 Bulgarians,
one Czech, seven Danes, two Dutch, two Estonians, one Fijian, one Hungarian,
33 Italians, one Kazakh, one Korean, three Latvian, 21 Poles, two Romanians,
five Salvadoran, four Slovaks, 11 Spaniards, two Thai and 18 Ukrainians
-- in the war in Iraq as of October 18, 2007, according to a CNN count.
Oct. 21 am PC One, the folks that planned
on taking over the local TV cable system backed out of the deal. If you
check out PC One on the
Sec of State's web site you'll see that they just set up for business
on Aug 7th of this year.
Oct. 21 am Fall is the time to burn
all the junk that seems to accumulate over the summer months. How
dry is it? This past week Gov Joe put a bann on all outdoor burning.
Oct. 20 am Jerry Dale Rogers,
see OBITUARY page
Oct. 19 pm Clay County has had less
than desirable cable TV service for years. Complaints to the providers
fall on deaf ears. We're talking about the old Thompson Cable system which
has been sold at least three times this decade. What happens when customers
get little for their bucks? They change service. Less than 90 homes now
subscribe to the cable service.
Oct. 19 pm After notice of the latest
bundler of services, the Town of Clay and County Commission decided
to negotiate a better deal for the residents.
Oct. 19 pm The Town was notified of
new ownership (PC One) in Sept. Last week came a second letter informing
the Town that the deal was off for now. Wonder what happened? Just after
the first letter arrived, Linda Rhodes filed suit against Cebridge for
not paying rent on the company's equipment located on her ridge top
farm.
Oct. 19 pm Some are guessing that Linda
Rhodes' lawsuit against Cebridge (former provider) may have cooled the
jets of PC One. Who is PC One? A Google search of the name brings
up absolutely nothing.
Oct. 19 pm When Cebridge took over
ownership a few years back, the company rep said he was working out of
the trunk of his car. Many surmise that PC One doesn't even have a car
to work out of!

The Al-Anon Family Group Meetings have been in Clay since September 26,
2007, at the Prestera Cafeteria at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday nights. To
date no residents of Clay County have been to any of the meetings.
In an effort to meet the needs of the community, the Al-Anon Family Group
is polling the community to determine if a different night and time would
be of more assistance to the community. Can you please make a statement
inquiring of when Clay County residents would prefer to have Al-Anon Meetings?

Oct. 19 am Correction. Yesterday
we posted the funding source of the new security cameras around the Courthouse
as Homeland Security. Wrong wrong wrong according to Connie Lupardus. Big
Lup called to say the funding was from the Alliance group with the grant
prepared by the CAEZ.
Oct. 19 am Evelyne McLaughlinn decided
to something about saving the old Dundon bridge. This week she started
a petition save the structure. On the first day she had over 100 names.
On wednesday she had right at 300 signatures in favor of using the span
as part of a municipal walking trail.
Oct. 18 am Evelyne plans to present
the petition next Wed during the Commission meeting.
Oct. 18 am It's always nice to see
the public step up to the plate and get involved.
Oct. 18 am Yesterday we
posted the Tom Auxier side of the Badges coming unto private property and
stopping a Methodist Gospel Sing. In that post was mentioned that Tom Auxier
felt Billy Truman was behind the complaint that brought law enforcement
to the meal and sing.
Oct. 18 am Well, Tom was right! From
the email bag in its entirety and without editing: Last Sunday evening
about 4 o'clock the loud music started and being as my mothers home is
located two tenths of a mile from Auxiers and the windows being rattled
even at my house 7/10 ths of a mile from Auxiers So called Christian Gathering
I called the Wv State Police and let them listen to the music as I heard
it 7/10 ths of a mile away. If I could hear it that far away you can imagine
how loud it was since I am in the next hollow over. God only knows it was
to loud for even a Methodist to hear it close up.
Call it a land dispute or what ever you want to call it but there is no
such thing going on. I have had my land surveyed twice by licensed surveyors,
once by a friend who surveyed under license from Bethelem Steel Energy
company so noone has any argument as to where I own. Borders to Auxiers
have been surveyed at least four times in the past 35 years also.
I have
a right to peace and quiet on my property and I do not have to nor will
I listen to noise from Auxiers or anyone else if I can get the law out
here to tone it down. This is country side and normal noise I will put
up with but braying like a JackAss I do not have to listen to. You can
bring in the ALCU, AFLCIO, FBI. and all the other letters of the Alphabet
I to have rights. As reported by Billy R. TruMan
Oct. 18 am Tom Auxier and Billy
Truman have been feuding for decades. Sometimes over right of ways, sometimes
over fences... feuding. During a 2006 Court case, the Judge said
that he didn't think anything could, would change no matter what the Court
ordered.
Oct. 18 am We have a story as reported
by Tom and Freda Auxier..
Oct. 18 am Last Sunday, Oct. 14th,
the Lizemores Methodist Church went over to the Auxier's mountain side
38 acres for an outdoor gospel sing and fellowship. The fun time began
at 4pm with around 50 or so in attendance. Joe Mullins was singing when
a blue and gold cruiser came onto the property via a bumpy dirt road, back
entrance. Seeing Tom, he ordered the music turned way down, that
a complaint had been received on loud music. Auxier instead turned the
PA system off.
Oct. 18 am According to Tom Auxier,
the Green Shirt (with a ride along Black Shirt at his side) issued a cease
and desist order for the loud music and if Auxier didn't comply, off to
the slammer he would go.
Oct. 18 am With the Badges on scene,
the congregation headed for their vehicles and service was over. Tom and
Freda Auxier feel the complaint was lodged by the Billy Truman family.
Just one more "jab" in the long standing dispute.
Oct. 18 am Tom says his house is a
long distance from the nearest home and an even longer distance to Mr.
Truman's home. Auxier questions the government intervention on his use
of his private property.
Oct. 18 am Lets see now, church group,
blue haired Methodists none the less, singing and praising on private property
on a Sunday and they get shut down by the government. Normally
that would be grounds for a great civil liberties outcry or court challenge.
Call in the ACLU!!
Oct. 18 am Normal may not apply in

Oct. 17 pm When you have a "I
Hate My Job" day, try this: On your way home from work,
stop at your pharmacy and go to the thermometer section and purchase a
rectal thermometer made by Johnson & Johnson. Be very sure
you get this brand.
When you get
home, lock your doors, draw the curtains and disconnect the phone so you
will not be disturbed. Change into very comfortable clothing and sit in
your favorite chair. Open the package and remove the thermometer.
Now, carefully place it on a table or a surface so that it will not become
chipped or broken.
Now the fun
part begins. Take out the literature from the box and read it carefully.
You will notice that in small print there is a statement: "Every Rectal
Thermometer made by Johnson & Johnson is personally tested and then
sanitized ". Now, close your eyes and repeat out loud five times, "I am
so glad I do not work in the thermometer quality control at Johnson &
Johnson."

in Clay County history and/or the Buffalo Creek and Gauley RR, here's a
web site you
gotta check out.
Oct. 14 pm New job listings are

Service
Oct. 14 pm Clay Roane PSD is starting
to play hardball. See ADVISORY page
Oct. 14 pm Jimmy Carter caught all
kinds of greif when he spoke out a few months ago on how Israel should
be treated just like any other nation. On June 8, 1967, US Navy intelligence
ship USS Liberty was suddenly and brutally attacked on the high seas in
international waters by the air and naval forces of Israel. The Israeli
forces attacked with full knowledge that this was an American ship and
lied about it. Survivors have been forbidden for 40 years to tell their
story under oath to the American public. This USS Liberty Memorial web
site tells their story and is dedicated to the memory of the 34 brave men
who died.
Oct. 14 pm Ever
hear of the US Liberty, here's the link.
Oct. 14 pm This past week little kids
dressed in summer duds shivered at bus stops when temps got down into the
30s. On the vine, the last few greeen tomatoes stopped growing. That smell
of burning dust was smelled as heaters and stoves were put into use. Now
the middle of Oct., still no beautiful fall colors. Maybe next week.
Oct. 14 pm We saw the power of the
citizenery this past week as phone calls were placed with the County Commission.
Many were in support of preserving the old Dundon bridge as part
of a touristy municipal hiking trail. Not sure if the bumpy steel grate
surfce is really that condusive to walking and biking but at least
the voters on both sides of the issue took the time to voice their thoughts.
That's a start!
Oct. 14 pm Here at Delta Communications
the last of the big heavy printing equipment was moved into our new
office at Two Run. With just a truck load of small stuff to move and clean
up duties, we should soon be back to normal... whatever that means. We're
planning some kind of open house fun later this month. Thanks for your
patience during the last three weeks.
Oct. 14 pm A Texas cowboy walks
into a bar and takes a seat next to a very attractive woman. He gives her
a quick glance, then casually looks at his watch for a moment. The
woman notices this and asks, "Is your date running late?" "No,"
he replies, "I just got this state-of-the-art watch, and I was testing
it." Intrigued, the woman says, "A state-of-the-art watch? What's
so special about it?" The cowboy explains, "It
uses alpha waves to talk to me telepathically." The lady says, "What's
it telling you now?" "Well, it says you're not wearing
any panties." The woman giggles and replies "Well it must be
broken because I am wearing panties!" The cowboy
smiles, taps his watch and says, "Darn thing's an hour fast."
Oct 12 pm It's out! The Communicator
made it to the news stands Friday afternoon around 3pm
Oct 12 pm Today we're moving the office
supplies and printing operation to our new digs. When completed late today,
we'll be done with the move to Upper Class Two Run.
Oct 12 pm Now if we can get some heat
turned on!
Oct 12 pm Update late Saturday night.
Oct 11 pm Happiest of Birthday wishes
to 86 year young Ruth Simmons!
Oct 11 pm Happy Birthday wish
for Shonnie Brinson
Oct 11 pm We're in shut down mode until
we get the paper out Friday afternoon around 4pm.Time to type type type.
Oct. 11 pm Lets see now. Three weeks
back the County Commission said no to a plan to turn the old Dundon bridge
into a pedestrian bridge to be included in an around town 3 mile hiking
trail, Last week a majority of Council did the same thang. Council's vote
signaled that the elected body was not in favor of growing a tourist economy
for the remaining few businesses left in town.
Oct. 11 pm Yesterday during the most
recent CCC meeting, Commissioners King and Triplett said they would be
willing to take a second look at saving the bridge if a couple of conditions
were met. One, the CCC would accept ownership just long enough (pass thru
agency) for the CAEZ to sign on the dotted line and assume ownership; Two,
they have to have in writing that the CCC would not be liable for the steel
structure sometime "down the road".
Oct. 11 pm The spark plug behind the
Save the Bridge initiative is CAEZ Director Connie Lupardus. Upon hearing
the change in CCC disposition, Lupardus said she would work to get answers
in writing to the CCC questions and maybe have reps from the contractors
and State Road at an upcoming meeting.
Oct. 11 pm Still a pipe dream
but wouldn't it be nice to actually save something historic, grow a tourism
economy, and see foot traffic once again return to downtown Clay.
Oct. 11 pm Here's the good part clickers.
What brought the change of heart with two members of the CCC? You!
Oct. 11 pm Commissioner King
said during Wednesday's meeting, she had received numerous phone calls
in favor of keeping the old structure. Numerous!
Oct. 11 pm Our guess is: blue haired,
no haired, and other seniors in the county are doing the phone calls in
support. What's it take to make this more than a pipe dream? Your
phone calls of support and Connie Lupardus getting answers to those two
CCC questions from yesterday.
Oct. 11 pm Want to make your thoughts
known? Call the County Clerk's office 587-4259 8:30 to 4pm M thru F or
Fran King at 587-2784 days or 286-5185 evenings.
Oct. 11 pm Friday's Communicator will
provide a more complete run down on the action.
Oct. 11 pm Deadline for getting stuff
in Friday's edition is today at 4pm. Email now
Oct. 11 am No update this morning.
Coming later today
Oct. 11 am We're going to try and get
the Communicator out the door on time this week. Deadline for events, meetings,
classifieds, obits, see today at 4pm. Email now!
Oct. 11 am For those that watch our
web cam.... we have it up and running again at our new location. It's now
pointing North on Rt 4. Without nearby street lights, night time viewing
is now difficult.
Oct. 11 am As a teaser... there may
be hope to saving the old Dundon bridge. Check back this afternoon
Oct. 10 am Happy Hump day Wednesday
morning.
Oct. 10 am Happy to report The Communicator
is once again in the 21st century. Our new phone service is up and running
as well as the DSL. Our web cam is up as well and is pointing inside the
new digs. You can watch us pick our noses if you like or wait a couple
days and we'll have it pointing N on Rt 4.
Oct. 10 am Last week we reported Town
Council voting down the "pass thru" ownership deal to keep the old Dundon
bridge as a tourist trap... I mean tourist draw. With the Council saying
no to new tourism dollars in downtown Clay and the County Commission voting
likewise three weeks earlier, is the bridge dead? Maybe maybe not.
Oct. 10 am Seems there are several
senior citizens seeing the importance of keeping the structure. What age
group votes the most? Seniors. Not sure anyone on the Commission wants
to pee off a voter. If those folks come out and voice their concerns....
you never know what might happen.
Oct. 10 am County Commission meets
this morning at 10 am.
Oct. 10 am Clay Roane PSD meets
Thursday night at the Courthouse. Their complete agenda is posted on the
ADVISORY page.
Oct. 10 am David "Stump" Morton

sad one. Who imports the most? We

Oct. 9 am Been real quiet in the land
of little. Other than a person taking his vehicle and trying to squish
another guy up against an Exxon post and then repeating it again, nothing
much going on.
Oct. 9 am Today at 4:30pm
Clay County PSD meets in their Main Street Clay digs.
Oct. 9 am We've almost got our new
office at Two Run, that's the upper class section of the town, ready to
go. Other than moving the printing equipment Saturday we're done.
Oct. 9 am Well except for telephone
and DSL service. Promised last week before they lost the paperwork, without
the service, our webcam is out of commission for now.
Oct. 9 am In a little-noticed
editorial Sunday why six
active nuclear armed cruise missiles were being transferred to an active
bomber base that "just happens to be the staging area for Middle Eastern
operations."
Oct. 9 am 30 some years ago a
guy wrote a book called The
Anarchist Handbook. It's a book chocked full of information from government
manuals on how to make bombs and such from the Vietnam era. It's still
found on many book stores and web sites. Completely legal to buy and own,
the book is once again raising a stink with some libraries now refusing
to keep it on their shelves. One 17 year old kid in England is in deep
doo doo for even possessing the manual.
Oct. 9 am Want to have some fun and
mess with the Feds? Here's a link to the beyond
weird download site sure to get you on some terrorist watch list.
Oct. 9 am Why allow such books on the
shelves? There are those that need em for research and those that just
want the general knowdlege available to them. But importantly, because
if you ban one book which are next.
Oct. 9 am On a 3 to 2 vote, last week,
Town Council shut the door on preserving and using the old Dundon bridge
as part of a new walking trail. Other places around the country think differently.
Here's an old bridge converted for pedestrian use in Iowa.
Over in Kentucky
a rusty bridge has been put on the historic register.
Oct. 8 am Today's a holiday for
many including us Communicatorettes.
Oct. 8 am the rest of the week
looks pretty busy. This afternoon at 5:15 the Board of Directors for
WYAP meet at the station beginning at 5:15pm. Tuesday afternoon at
4:30 is the Clay County PSD meeting. Wed morning the County Commission
meets at 10 am. And Thursday evening at 7pm in the CCC room, Clay Roane
PSD meets.
Oct. 8 am Not sure when last week's
canceled BDA meeting will be held.
Oct. 8 am "I've had bad luck with both
my wives. The first one left me, and the second one didn't." Patrick
Murray
Oct. 8 am "Some people ask the
secret of our long marriage. We take time to go to a restaurant two times
a week. A little candlelight, dinner, soft music and dancing. She goes
Tuesdays, I go Fridays." Henny Youngman

way to remember your wife's birthday is to forget it once...

Oct. 7 pm This Sunday afternoon it
feels more like summer than Fall. Ditto for the past week. Bright sun and
temps in the upper 80s and into the 90s.
Oct. 7 pm Lookin back...
Oct. 7 pm Belated Happy Birthday wishes
extended to Evelyne McLaughlin.
Oct. 7 pm Always fun to watch
a major institution squirm especially if it's a religious one. This time
the scandal coming to light is the Oral
Roberts University.
Oct. 7 pm Jail time , jail bills,
and long time incarceration has been on t he rise some the court system
feel victim to the public's demand to keep people behind bars. Here's a
case where a doughnut
thief is facing life behind bars. What brought the mandatory sentences?
Our opinion: We didn't care a bit when black people were shooting other
blacks. When they started car nabbing us pasty whites in our Volvos, that
did it!
Oct. 7 pm Seems like the federal government
should honor promises made our service men. That ain't happening with returning
guardsmen. Pitiful!
Oct. 7 pm There have been
4,110 coalition deaths -- 3,810 Americans, two Australians, 170 Britons,
13 Bulgarians, one Czech, seven Danes, two Dutch, two Estonians, one Fijian,
one Hungarian, 33 Italians, one Kazakh, one Korean, three Latvian, 21 Poles,
two Romanians, five Salvadoran, four Slovaks, 11 Spaniards, two Thai and
18 Ukrainians -- in the war in Iraq as of October 5, 2007, according to
a CNN count.
Oct. 7 pm Locally we saw a couple
interesting morsels.
Oct. 7 pm After months of hard work
to preserve the old Dundon bridge by CAEZ Director Connie Lupardus, Town
Council sealed the fate of the of the early 20th century structure by voting
down a "pass thru" agency arrangement. The deal would have allowed
the CAEZ to assume ownership of bridge and continue plans to turn
it into a tourist attraction, build a small park, include the thang in
a 3 mile, in town, hiking trail. Mayor Brown, Jeremy Hanshaw and
Llyn Drake were the majority voters.
Oct. 7 pm How dimly lit? During discussion
on a possible park on the far end of the bridge, some Council members voiced
concern that a small park would be a bad idea because people could sit
there and drink beer or cause trouble. With attitudes like that, the town,
the county has NO chance of growing. Sounded like they like poverty and
want to keep things just like they are!
Oct. 7 pm The second biggy this
week was the changing of the guard at the Buffalo Creek and Gauley Railroad.
Long time organizer Roger Nutter stepped down as Prez of the group citing
health reasons. Replacing him, ( Board decision) is Gerald Murphy. The
new Prez gave a stump speech on t he importance of cleaning up the county
as a way of attracting more tourists, campers, and train riders. His remarks
were well received by those in attendance.
Oct. 7 pm Clean up the county, plant
flowers, pick up trash, tear down junk buildings.... where have we heard
all that before?
Oct. 7pm During their Oct. 6th membership
meeting, some of those behind the scenes issues, maybe hard feelings, surfaced.
There's the $300 per month petty cash fund provided Mr Nutter. In response
the treasurer said he has every receipt for every penny spent. There's
the issue of who gets the $ from the railroad rides in the little
Fairmont rail car. Nutter responded that it's his rail car, the BC&G
refused to purchase it some time ago, and he keeps the ride money [to keep
the vehicle maintained].
Oct. 7 pm Leadership change is usually
a tough time for small organizations. It was for the BC&G Saturday.
Murphy might be the right guy for the job. He said members have to have
trust and confidence in the Board, every penny spent cannot be shown on
the monthly financials, and it's time to redouble efforts to get the railroad
back on track. The membership, or at least most of it, nodded in support.
Oct. 7 pm On the plus side: the front
deck at the Campground lodge is nearly complete; roof trusses arrive on
Tuesday; the roof should be completed before winter, the campground was
full during the Big Apple; and, the final government OK was given on using
that $250,000 for purchasing a 2 1/2 miles of track.
Oct. 7 pm Friday night the CCHS Panthers
took on Roane County over at Schoonover Bradley Field. The Panthers put
it all over the Raiders right up to the last 1 minute and 3 seconds of
the game. During that final 60 seconds or so, the Roane County team was
able to intercept two passes and take em in for touchdowns.
Oct. 7 pm Let's see know, you're ahead,
have the ball, and all you have to do is run down the clock.... and then
the Coach tells the kid to pass, not once, but twice . Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm....
Oct. 6 am The CCHS Panthers had
the game against Roane County won last night. Then came the last one minute.
With two interceptions and touchdowns, everything turned to mush. Final
27 to 20 and we didn't have the 27.
Oct. 6 am Office Update: The
Communicator has most of the office gear moved to our new location at Two
Run. The power is on, floors are scrubbed, the bathroom works, and even
some pictures are hung. Can't say as much for phone service from Frontier.
The phone and DSL was suppose to be up and running Friday. Didn't happen.
Don't blame the local boys, the big shots in NY never fowarded work orders
for the change in location.
Oct. 6 am Translation: with no DSL,
no web cam and no daytime web updates. Sorry.
Oct. 6 am A young fellow and
his wife wanted to join a church. The pastor said: To join this church
you have to abstain from sex for 30 days. They looked at one another and
nodded. The days went by followed by 1 week and then a second week.
Running into the pastor, the couple admitted, they had failed. The guy
said, look at her, how could anybody resist. Truth is preacher, she was
wearing a short skirt and when she bent over to pick up the biscuit I dropped,
I couldn't help myself and we went right at it then and there.
After
a few minutes the pastor said: We'll I'm sorry then, you can't come back
to our church. Having heard that, the fellow: That's Ok Preacher, they
won't let us back in Tudor's either.
Oct. 5 am Stephen Wyatt Hayes,
2 months old, of Procious , see OBITUARY page
Oct. 5 am Check out the EVENTS page
for stuff like: the JG Bradley Campground Farmers Market , the yard sale
in the old Fas Chek parking lot and more.
Oct. 5 am Tonight the CCHS Panthers
take on Roane County over at Schoonover/Bradley Field. With beautiful fall
weather predicted... GO PANTHERS!!!
Oct. 5 am For those wanting to
do something different Saturday..... Clay County's Harold Allen and Terri
Lively will be competing in the state blues music competition down in Charleston
at the Holiday Inn. Here's the link to the West
Virginia Blues Society and schedule.
Oct. 5 am Yesterday we mentioned
a lady who got caught downloading music from the net. Instead of settling
with the greedy record companies, she decided to fight. She lost
her court case yesterday and has to pay $220,000 for downloading 24
songs.
Oct. 5 am Wouldn't you think
soldiers returning from active duty would get to use their GI Bill. Ain't
the case clickers. After serving 22 months in the Shrub's oil war, soldiers
are being
denied college benefits. What a dirty rotten trick!
Oct. 5 am Locally, our government
has never had a business plan. They have no short or long range plans to
guide them. Mostly, our government just reacts to whatever comes before
them. They shoot from the hip and usually miss.
Oct. 5 am The old Dundon bridge is
ready to be torn down as soon as the new bridge is completed sometime next
year. The CAEZ has been working to save the 75 year old structure. Their
plan would include the steel structure in a 2 mile walking trail complete
with a small park with benches on the far side of river.
Oct. 5 am For CAEZ to do that, a government
agency would have to take possession of the span and then lease or sell
it to the CAEZ. The government agency would be a "pass thru
agency" only. There would be ZERO liability for the government agency (Town
or County Commission) since the CAEZ would take immediate ownership.
Oct. 5 am Last night Clay Town Council
held a special meeting to vote the idea. The vote went: Joyce GIbson and
Jerry Stover in favor of being the pass thru agency with Mayor Jack Brown,
Dwana Murphy, Jeremy Hanshaw, and Llyn Drake voting No.
Oct. 5 am With the County Commission
already saying no to the project, for all intents and purposes, it's dead.
OCt 5 am With the exception of the
old Courthouse, look around the county and see if you see any historic
buildings? How about historic anything? How about anything that looks nice
enough to draw tourists.
Oct. 5 am Don't go straining your eyes.
You won't find a thing. Our first order of business is to destroy historical
stuff. Get rid of it!
Oct. 5 am Such was the case last
night as the Recorder, Mayor, and two Council persons sealed the fate for
one less tourist attraction and a brighter future for the entire county.
Oct. 5 am Send those kids right off
to So Carolina as soon as they graduate. There's nothing here for em!
Oct. 4 am Walter William Fisher,
70, of Clay, see OBITUARY page
Oct. 4 am Clay Town Council will try
again to hold their Oct. meeting, tonight at 7pm. Tuesday's effort brought
out less than a quarrel, I mean quorum. The biggy vote for the night will
be whether to accept the old Dundon bridge as part of a much needed tourist
draw for the downtown.
Oct. 4 am Mike Evans with the BDA told
Commissioner King that tonight's Business DEvelopment Authority meeting
has been canceled.
Oct. 4 am Fred Sampson will start up
his Thursday night live discussion group program on 101.7 FM tonight at
6pm. Listen in!
Oct. 4 am We've got the new jobs listing
frm WorkForce over on the JOB page.
Oct. 4 am You know we're moving
out of our old downtown Clay office digs into the old U Can Restaraunt
at Two Run. We're remodeling the new place and ready to move the office
stuff in this week. At the new place is one of those great big metal kitchen
hoods used to suck out the fumes and stink. We're removing it from the
building. If you want it for free, stop by the new place with a truck.
It's yours. The better the sooner or else it's to the junk yard!
Oct. 4 am Fess up, tell the truth.
How many of you have downloaded music from the internet/ There's been a
lot of talk about coming after those of us that download or did download.
Now the first actual case over illegal file sharing has come to court.
Here's the link
for the latest.
Oct. 4 am Those guys are at it
again. You know who we're talking about. Those ever so nasty ACLUer's.
Now they're before the Supreme Court .. get this!... trying to restore
the constitution for the common man. How Dare They!!!
Oct. 4 am Down in Texas a kid
got tossed from wearing a T shirt to high school . Not one with a beer
logo, or a some naked lady, nor one with some gang related message. He's
out of school for wearing a
Edwards for President T shirt.
Oct. 4 am Discussion was about
all that happened during Wednesday's County Commission meeting. Talk
once again on a day reporting center in the county to lower the cost of
our jail bill .... trying to find people to appoint to the Health Board
and the BDA .... and little else.
Oct. 4 am Could have had more fun watching
a snail race.
Oct. 4 am Hey! WYAP is hosting
a yard sale at the old Fas Chek of Clay parking lot Saturday. So far only
2 people have said they're going to set up a table. Unless we hear from
several more soon, they're going to cancel the thang. Email at this address
if you're going to set up a stand Saturday. Remember it might be the last
chance to make some $$$$ with warm weather. Suppose to be in the 80's Saturday.

Oct. 3 am County Commission rescheduled
their meeting to today beginning at 10 am. Pete's laid up and unable
to attend leaving the Franster and ole what's his name in charged of the
county. Pray. Pray hard!
Oct. 3 am We're hearing a lot about
foreclosures and such. Check out the ADVISORY page for the latest tips.
Oct. 3 am With Fall here and
Winter just behind, get out and make yourself some money this Saturday.
Set up a yard sale in the old Fas Chek parking lot. Bring your own table,
first come first served, no reserved spaces and no charge. Better be there
early for a good spot. Not responsible for even a stubbed toe! Call WYAP
with questions.
Oct. 3 am Like to tall you some big
juicy story from Tuesday night's Council and CAEZ meeting.
Oct. 3 am Can't do it. Council didn't
have a quorum, no Joyce Gibson, Llyn Drake, and Jeremy showed up late.
That meeting is rescheduled for Thursday evening at 7pm
Oct. 3 am The CAEZ Bd meeting
had more than enough for a quorum but they they did more BSing than anything
else.
Oct. 3am Nothing new from either
meeting.
Oct. 3 am Some things happen real quick,
like a drive to church. From the Charleston Daily Mail: An automobile accident
killed a 2-month-old boy and injured his mother and grandmother.
Stephen Hayes of Clay County was killed in the Sunday morning accident
that left his mother, Gloria, 24, and his grandmother, Alice Gandee, of
Falling Rock, in the hospital. Dolas Gandee Jr., Stephen's grandfather,
was driving the family on W.Va. 62 in a Kia sedan, when Audrey Justice,
22, of Grundy, Va., failed to yield at a stop sign and crashed into the
family's car on the driver's side, said the investigating officer, Sgt.
Jim Bare of the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. After the initial
impact, Dolas lost control of the car, which struck a barrier post on the
passenger's side, bounced off a retaining wall and turned over on its top
before sliding to a stop, Bare said.
The child, who was in a child safety
seat, was in the back seat of the passenger side of the car.
Bare said W.Va. 62 has a speed
limit of 55 mph. It was not clear how fast the cars were going when Justice,
driving a Dodge Neon, attempted to go through the intersection off of Lower
Parchment Road in Ripley.
Alice was transferred to St. Mary's
Medical Center in Huntington, where she is currently listed in stable condition.
Gloria is still under evaluation at CAMC General Hospital. Bare said the
young mother broke both of her arms. The roads were shut down for
about an hour after the 10 a.m. accident, Bare said. Justice was
cited with failure to yield, he said. "The investigation has basically
been cleared," Bare said.
