March 2013 Past News

  • March 29 late p  Looking for something to do Saturday. Buffalo Creek is being stocked with around 600 pounds of trout around noon ish. No not those itty bitty thangs but some great big lunkers sure to bend your pole.
  • March 29 late p Here's a Charleston Gazette report penned by Rusty Marks :   A 77-year-old mentally incapitated woman removed from Thomas Memorial Hospital against doctor's orders on Thursday has been found safe. Lt. Aaron Dunlap of the South Charleston Police Department said family members removed Sharon G. Hall, 77, from the hospital in an apparent family squabble. Police were looking for Danny Sams, 47; Cheryl "Sug" Sams, 50 and Belinda Carter, 52, late Thursday. The trio allegedly went to the psychiatric unit of Thomas Memorial Hospital on Thursday and left with Hall. Hall is the mother of Cheryl Sams and Carter.  However, Dunlap said Hall was located later in the evening. Police planned to turn her over to the custody of Adult Protective Services while determining whether charges should be filed against family members.
  • March 29 late p Sharon Hall lives across the Queen Shoals bridge in Clay County about half way over to H E White Elem.. The folks the Badges are chasing are Sug Sams and hubby along with a third person the Gazette calls a Carter subject. Sug and spouse live in Clendenin just up the hill from the Clendenin post office. Shouldn't be too hard to find.
  • March 29 late p   Word has it that Badges were coming her way Friday evening around 10 pm. Must not have found em.
  • MArch 29 a Even with North Korea missiles aimed at us, with beautiful sunshine about, it's a great Good Friday.
  • March 29 a For those interested in what elected folks are doing to us under the gold dome, the latest updates from Senators Facemire and Cann along with Delegate Dave Walker's remarks are on the ADVISORY page now
  • March 29 a Sheriff Slack is sporting a brand new Badge mobile . In years past, gas guzzling  SUVs were bought . Not so this time. The new vehicle is a four door cruiser
  • March 29 a  New owners may be coming for the old Clay Auto Parts now known as The Parts Store. Fran King says the transfer of ownership may come as soon as today.
  • March 29 a Cell phone service at Clay County Park where the CHS Panthers play home baseball games, well, it's just about non existent.
  • March 29 a The local radio station uses cell service to broadcast games there since there's no land line. Tonight the non profit station is trying something different. TG Griffith will do the color and play by play as normal but instead of going out to the airwaves, he will input all into a digital recorder for replay.
  • March 29 a Tonight the Panther play Wirt in double header action. Hear the first game on 101.7FM shortly after the second game ends.
  • March 29 a
  • March 27 p  All Badges in the state except (Chiefs' of Police and Sheriffs ) are required to go thru training down in Institute.  Kenton Duffield was hired as a Black Shirt a couple weeks back. Off to training he did go.
  • March 27 p He lasted less than a day. Near the end of day one, Kenton Duffield called it quits and came home.
  • March 27 p Training is expensive. Sheriff Slack was not sure today how much the county will have to pay for the guy's slot at the academy
  • March 27 p During this morning's County Commission meeting, the folks up front said no to any funding of the 2013 Spring Clean Up Day and not a penny to help with the Lake Sampson Kids Fishin Derby to be held next month.
  • March 27 p  Long time Bailiff Gene King was turned out to pasture last Thursday. On Friday the County supplied him $4413 as pay for all the unused vacation time and sick leave.
  • March 27 p The county has lots of part time workers. According to the county policy, part timers are not given benefits like sick leave and paid vacation time.
  • March 27 p   It appears the severance pay to O Gene King may have just opened the door to all current and former part time employees to ask for and receive benefits.
  • March 27 p The current County Commission and most former Commissioners, spend, spent, lots of energy talking about the need for jobs.
  • March 27 p For the most part, whenever it comes to actually funding good jobs, our frugal leadership has a habit of hiring free prison labor or hire part timers at starvation wages without benefits
  • MArch 27 p Now that's the way to grow a county!!
  • March 27 a No word yet on this afternoon's CHS game but it's pretty nasty out there
  • March 27 a County Commission meets this morning at 10 am. There's a CAEZ Boardster election at 9:45 and one for the North at 1pm at the Big Otter Community Center
  • March 27 a When you're in trouble and are digging your own grave, stop digging. Yesterday during Arraignment Day before Judge Jack Alsop, three folks didn't know that.
  • March 27 Christopher Nottingham, Dale Green, and Jacob Deems were indicted by the Spring Grand Jury. All three showed up to say not guilty. To stay out of jail, they had to pass the wee wee test. None did. They're in the slammer now.
  • March 27 a  They had already been arrested, they knew they had to come to court, and they knew the date. Yet, they showed up with hot pee.
  • March 27 a There's a trend around the country to rethink drug arrests along the lines of a mental illness instead of a criminal issue. Here's three good examples of the need to rethink.
  • March 27 a David Hanshaw was the guy arrested for breaking into the Clay Post Office, Health Dept and Ambulance Service. He too was indicted this round. There might be some paperwork issues in that case. Up front the Judge raised eyebrows on the wording of the indictment and how many times someone could be charges with the crime.
  • March 27 a Now bearded, Hiriam Lewis the XXXVIII  showed up after being reindicted. Turns out the Judge didn't like that paperwork either. Lewis is still indicted from several months ago. Those indictments have not been dismissed. Yesterday a few of the old charges were on the new indictment.
  • March 27 a Alsop doesn't jump up or down or for that matter, yell. What he does do is give the evil eye, stare at the Prosecutor when he screws up, and dresses down the  presenter ( that's Jim Samples) when they blow it.
  • March 27 a Alsop did those things Tuesday when the Lewis case was before him. Something about being indicted for the same things a second time. Alsop was not a happy camper.
  • March 27 a Don't think Hanshaw or Lewis will get away with their transgressions but there is a problem with both cases.
  • March 27 a  Full details in the next Communicator
  • March 26 4:10 am    With about a half a gulp of snow on the ground, CLAY COUNTY SCHOOLS ARE ON A TWO HOUR DELAY TODAY
  • March 25 a On this last Monday in March we should be talking about flowers coming up and the first ramps os the season stinking up our homes. Instead more snow is predicted for the area. Maybe as much as 2 inches coming our way tonight.  At 11 am this morning, snow showers were in the air and temps dropped from 39 this morning to 35 at this time. Brrrrrr
  • March 25  a   We've got a pretty good week of news coming.
  • March 25 a Last week the Spring Grand Jury pointed the finger at a bunch of folks for their alleged transgressions. Tuesday morning beginning at 9am, before Judge  Jack Alsop, all those people will stand and say , I didn't do it. Nice heat and good soft seats. Don't miss the fun
  • March 25a Wed morning the County Commission meets at 10 am at the Courthouse. During recent meetings, the elected officials  have made public a pretty likely shortfall for funding their operation. Last week Larry Darryl and Darryl told each dept head, you have to cut your budgets by 15%.  While that doesn't sound like much, it could easily mean job loss for several employees.
  • March 25 a  Part of the problem is less mining in the county. Another factor in keeping people at their desks is the amount of local $$$$ spent on the 2012 election year  folly to build the Judicial Annex building.
  • March 25 a   Over the weekend one lady told the ace cub reporter that he should always say positive stuff.
  • March 25 a Here goes. Commissioner Slinky will not seek another term in office.
  • March 24 a Commissioner Pierson is up for reelection in just two years.
  • March 25 a How's that!
  • March 25 a   In Clayberry, it has never been elected officials that make the improvements. Truth is, volunteers comes up with the ideas and pull off the good things.
  • March 25 a Such was the case Saturday when the BDA Tourism committee pulled off an Easter time event, the Clay County Eggstravaganza
  • March 26 a   Even with temps down around 25 degrees, over  100+ kids participated in the newly formed event.
  • March 26 a Great
  • March 24 late p  The winter that won't end
  • March 24 late p An inch of the white stuff predictamentated for tonight and another couple for Monday late.
  • March 24 late p As of 9:30 pm raining like crazy.
  • March 22 p With bright sunshine around the county...
  • CHS baseball game today at 5pm
  • March 22 p  Lots of fun for everyone tomorrow during the Eggstraveganza at the Courthouse
  • March 22p From the email bag:   Big Otter B Team (Youth Basketball) consisting of players Dillon Moore, Holt Dawson, Jack Haverty, Chesney Boggs, Hunter Thacker, Mason Sigman & Lindsey Schoolcraft won the 2013 B Team Championship.  They finished the regular season UNDEFEATED and went UNDEFEATED in the tournament.  Congratulations to all of the players and thanks for your hard work and dedication throughout the season.
  • March 22 p O Gene King has been around the Courthouse for about a gazillion years in one capacity or another.
  • March 22 p   After being off work since last Sept with ailments, yesterday, Sheriff Slack handed the guy his termination letter. See homepage
  • March 22p With his severance check in hand today, we say goodbye to Bailiff King
  • March 22 p    Last night the high school held a public forum on school safety. If you don't count school employees, no one was there. How sad
  • March 22 p This morning the County Commission marched in elected officials one by one and gave them the bad news, with greatly reduced coal severance $$$ on hand, each agency will receive a 15% across the board budget cut beginning July 1st. Begrudgedly, each accepted their plight.
  • March 22 p Prosecutor Jim Samples was very upset with Larry Darryl and Darryl's one size fits all approach.
  • March 22 p For bigger departments and those with built in state allowed slush funds, 15% isn't so great. For the Prosecutor's small budget, a $38,000 cut, 15%, could mean loss of two employees. With two less handling paperwork and scheduling court time, the results cut be huge.   If paperwork isn't done on time, cases cut be delayed meaning alleged bad guys and girls could remain behind bars (on our dime) for even longer periods of time.
  • March 22 p  For the Circuit Clerk's office, ditto. If the court orders aren't prepared on time and ready for court day, more costly delays can be expected.
  • March 22 p There was a time when the Commission (and the Pentagon too) had enough $$$ laying around for those gravy jobs and special hand outs. That ain't the case now.
  • March 22 p  If all stays bad, look for one layoff in the County and Circuit Clerk's office plus an additional person without a paycheck in the Prosecutor's office.
  • March 21 p Over at the CHS mini auditorium, tonight at 6pm, is an important public gathering for those interested in safe schools. See EVENTS page
  • March 21 p Tonight's ballgame was canceled by Roane County
  • March 21 p From the email bag:CCHS Baseball Team played a makeup game at Lincoln County last night and defeated them 5-3 bringing their record so far this season to 3-0. Their conference play begins with Nicholas County at home tomorrow at 5:00.
  • March 21 p FYI  The radio station is still looking for sponsors to air 10 CHS baseball and softball games this season.  If you can help, see Peter Triplett at the Courthouse
  • March 21 p Spring Grand Jury was busy Tuesday bringing back 15 True Bills including
  • March 21 p Ernie Pat Dawson Jr failure to register as a sex offender x4
  • March 21 p Dale Green possession with intent to deliver
  • March 21 p Ronald Boggs operatin or attempting to operate a drug lab
  • March 21 p Crystal Brown fraudelent schemes x 4
  • March 21 p John Rider possession of material depicting minors engaged in explicit conduct x 10
  • March 21 p David Hanshaw B & E and petit larceny
  • March 21 p Jacob Deems malicious wounding
  • March 21 p  Christopher Nottingham sexual assault , first and second degree abuse by parent of guardian
  • March 21 p Michael Morris, Randall Taylor, and Gary D Joubert grand larceny x 2 and conspiracy x 2
  • March 21 p  Brian Adkins, sexual assault, first and second degree sexual abuse by a parent or guardian
  • March 21 p Amy Jones counterfeitering x 4
  • MArch 21 p And here he is again, Hiram Carson Lewis IV domestic assault and malicious wounding.
  • March 21 p On that last one, Lewis was indicted earlier. During each court case, he told anyone that would listen, the  indictment was bogus that you can't be charged for everything if one bullet is used.
  • March 21 p Whether right or wrong, here's the new indictment minus one charge
  • March 21 p Arraigment is set for March 26th beginning at 9am
  • March 20 late p  First some bad news: The widow of actor Andy Griffith has gotten a permit to tear down the house where he lived for many years on the North Carolina. Sad.
  • March 20 late p Then some good stuff: New Hampshire is one step closer to becoming the 19th state to legalize medical marijuana. IF they can get it legalized, we won't have to drive to Colorado for a buzz!
  • March 20 late p and.... Clayberry is not the worst county in the state in a national poll. Turns out we ain't the fatest, worst in smoking, not the least active, and our teen birth rate ain't at the bottom either. Close but not in the complete cutter.
  • March 20 late p The answer to the morning brain teaser, The Monkees.
  • March 20 p New job posting on the JOBS page
  • March 20 a Yes Sir reBob, The Communicator made it out the door Tuesday afternoon around 3pm. For those interested in what's really going on in Clayberry, there's nothing like a locally owned and operated newspapers for right on solid information and that's The Communicator
  • March 20 a For those wondering, Monday night,  the Business Development Authority , the BDA, voted unanimously to allow the County Commission to operate in backdoor fashion and retain $20,000 swiped from the Economic Development group. Full details on the front page of the Communicator
  • March 20 a  It's truly Spring but the weather people aren't cooperating. Low temps and snow remain in the !!##@@@ forecast
  • March 20 a Senator Sam Cann's latest update is over on the ADVISORY page
  • March 20 a The Clay High Baseball team has two wins under their belt. No chance for  a third this evening since the game has been canceled.
  • March 20 a WYAP-LP wants to sportscast around five baseball and five varsity softball games this season. If you can help get our kids on the air at the non profit station, stop over and see Peter Triplett at the Courthouse. For a $50 donation you get your name, company name and particulars mentioned four times during each game and whenever volunteers are behind the mic at other times. TG Griffith will be the lead sportscaster this season.
  • March 20 a   Alarming:  Rates of all forms of autism in the U.S. may be substantially higher than previously estimated, according to a new government report that found that 1 out of every 50 school-age children – roughly one on every school bus – has the condition.Read more.
  • March 20 a Another alarm: Small children who land in the hospital emergency room after swallowing the wrong medication rarely get the stuff from a medicine cabinet or drawer, ...children take pills or bottles off the floor, out of sofa cushions or from purses, countertops and other easy-to-see spots.
  • March 20 a  About this time in 2003,  West Virginia's Jessica Lynch was front page news after being rescued from Iraq capture. Here's what she's up to these days.
  • March 20 a For our know it alls,  What group emerged when the Hollywood Reporter ran an ad: Wanted, four insane boys age 17 to 21 to form a group for a TV show
  • March 18 p  Be sure to read the morning post first..
  • March 18 p We're already getting emails that the County Commission can NOT remove BDA members from their appointed positions. That's ain't true.
  • March 18 p    Economic development committees are the only appointed groups that a county commission can  remove without any reason. Hack off the CCC and you can be removed from appointed duty.
  • March 18 p Last Fall Larry Darryl and Darryl didn't like it one bit when BDA Boardster Jesse Sizemore demanded that a $20,000 economic development grant from Charleston be returned to the BDA for proper use.. Sizemore made various phone calls and wrote letters to the State Development office folks.
  • March 18 p  Sizemore's term on the BDA ended when the County Commission refused to reappoint the lad  to service. They thought if Sizemore was gone, the problem of mis spending the $20,000 would also disappear. It hasn't.
  • March 18 p Sizemore was no reappointed to office. The County Commission can also remove a Boardster or Boardsters from economic development committees without reason. That's state code.
  • March 18 p We're going into typing mode to get the paper out Tuesday. No new posts unless something particularly good or dumb happens.
  • March 18 a  Talk about a day for public meetings.
  • March 18 a This morning the Tourism Committee meets at the Pentagon Bd room at 11 am
  • March 18 a After rescheduling several times, the Clay Health Bd meets at 4:30p in their conference room.
  • March 18 a At 6pm the BDA meets at the Courthouse.
  • March 18 a  Also at 6pm, the School Board meets at Clay Middle School for another round of fun and entertainment.
  • March 18 a Lets go back to the BDa meeting for a second. On tonight's agenda, the group will vote to demand $20,000 from  a state grant be returned to them. Last year the County Commission swiped the $$$ and used it on the cash starved judicial annex project next door..
  • March 18 a The vote will is important. It will set the future of the group.
  • March 18 a  If they decide to lay down, to buckle, it signals the entire body is OK with misspending state funds.
  • March 18 a If they vote to go after the funds, it will surely pee off the County Commission which could in turn replace every one on the BDA Board.
  • March 18 a  You have to wonder what's been going on behind the scenes.
  • March 18 a Since the grant $$$ were earmarked to build a conference room, office area, and purchase computers, printers, etc for Economic Development Director Amanda Moore, there is little doubt, the pressure is on Moore to poo poo the vote.
  • March 18 a But wait there's more!
  • March 18 a  Salary funding for the Director comes in part from the Commission. If the BDA pees off the CCC, any future funding, albeit small, may be whacked.
  • March 18 a Tonight's BDA meeting might be a good one to watch from the peanut gallery.
  • March 18 a Communicator comes out Tuesday afternoon. Email over your input by 5 p today for inclusion.
  • March 18 a  Wed is the anniversary of the start of the Iraq war. Back in 2002, this country was fed a barrel full of lies to convince us to invade and occupy a country that had nothing to do with the attack on the World Trade Center on Sept 11th 2001
  • March 18 a After 11 years and thousands of dead later, Yes we're still there.
  • March 18 a We do have some good news,  A federal judge has struck down a set of laws allowing the FBI to issue so-called national security letters to banks, phone companies and other businesses demanding customer information. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston said the laws violate the First Amendment and the separation of powers principles and ordered the government to stop issuing the secretive letters or enforcing their gag orders
  • March 18 a Here's the link to restoring some of our civil liberties stolen during the Dubbya administration.
  • March 16 a Think this has been a long winter ? You're right. March 2012 was the warmest March on record with several days in the 70s.
  • March 16 a For much of the country, Saint Patty's Day is the biggest party weekend of the year. Last March, Morgantown, home of the number one party school in the nation, sold out of kegs of beer.
  • March 16 a We might be seeing change during this year's Legislative session. The target appears to be educational reform including keeping the little snot lickers in school more days, maybe year round school. So far all the elected folks have been up to has been attacking the teachers, the ones in the trenches.
  • March 16 a Lets say they come up with some stronger mandate for teaching 180 days per year, keep the rug rats in school thru much of June.  180 days. What is that?
  • March 16 a Lets say you have school but buses don't run up the hollows and only half the kids come to school? Is that a day of education? Does that count as one of the 180 days? How does that affect test scores?
  • March 16 a There are no easy answers.
  • March 16 a Frontier Tele, the main suuplier of DSL in Clayberry, says they're upgrading and providing new service to the tune of millions. What Frontier considers high speed internet is quite different from the rest of the world. Frontier thinks 2 mbps is great, best thing since canned soup.
  • March 16 a Take for instance Morgantown. There slowest connection speed there with Comcast cable service is 25 mbps down and likewise up. Friday night speedtests showed a constant 40 mbps down and 35 megs up. At those speeds, as soon as you click the link button, you're there.
  • March 16 a Without speedy internet, Clayberry doesn't have a chance.
  • March 16 a You're on your own clickers. Get out and get cold and wet.
  • March 15 p After you take a few minutes to hug your kids, check the smoke alarms, and see that the heaters are working properly and not too close to combustibles, some online junk.
  • March 15 p  Charleston Newspapers are reporting something we've known for a long time: Residents in the coal-mining communities of West Virginia suffer higher overall death rates than non-mining areas of Appalachia, according to a new University of Pittsburgh study made public Wednesday.     The study then compared cancer mortality rate data from 1950 through 2007 and non-cancer death rates from 1960 to 2007.  Among the findings:    • Higher rates of mortality in coal-mining counties compared to non-coal mining counties for total mortality, and all cancer, respiratory cancer, diabetes and heart-disease mortality.   • Higher rates of mortality in non-coal mining counties for kidney cancer and stroke.    • Higher rates of non-cancer respiratory disease mortality among males, but not females, in coal-mining counties, perhaps indicative of occupational diseases such as black lung.
  • March 15 p We forget how much a fib the lead up tothe Iraq war really was. To refresh your rememory, here's some darn good reading.
  • March 15 p Last year an independent audit of the State School Board revealed among other things, the place has too many on the payroll. This week, while recommending cutbacks to the Legislature, not so quietly, the Board hired  a Director of Operations at $104,000 per year.
  • March 15 p How's your internet speed? Got any idea when and where quality service will be available? Contractors are having a hard time getting maps on all those gazzilion dollar Frontier  fiber optic upgrades. After spending  tens of millions from Obama's stimulus $$$, Frontier appears to be a little slow in showing where the actual  500 mile long product is located.
  • March 15 p  The Sheriff's Dept is looking for a few good candidates for employment. Check our JOBS page for that info and a couple other work opportunitites.
  • March 15 p Enjoy the weekend one and all
  • March 15 a Morning posts normally provide information on something dumb local leaders have let slip out of the bag. Just when you think something good is going to happen, or something good is comin our way, without fail, Poof, such a notion vaporizes.
  • March 15 a If we didn't laugh about our plight, it would be too much to bare
  • March 15 a No such dumb bunny post this morning. Sadness is upon the county.
  • March 15 a By this time yesterday morning, Ryan 7, Patricia 6, and Aryanne Jackson were burned to death as well as their grandmother, Darlene Gooslin. Nothing was left of their small pieced together trailer with add ons.
  • March 15 a  When two of our local local Troopers were gunned down last August, that wasn't a tragedy, that was senseless murder. The loss of these little ones and their Grandmother, that is a tragedy.
  • March 15 a Fire consumed the trailer in minutes. State authorities are investigating. With very cold temps Thursday morning, most likely, a malfunctioning kerosene or propane stove will be the culprit.
  • March 15 a Get well wishes  and condolences extended to Benjamin and David Jackson who escaped from the blaze and are in the Cabell Huntington Burn Center.
  • March 15 a  Last winter, when that pesky beep kept going off in the middle of the night, did you just take the battery out of your smoke detector? It's way past time to install a new one.
  • March 15 a This morning we mourn.
  • March 14 p Need a job? You might get one if you have some training. See ADVISORY page today
  • March 14 a  Gerald Sanders, 68, of Indore, see OBITUARY page
  • March 14 a Clay Roane PSD meets this evening at the Procious Wa Wa Plant
  • March1 4 a Senator Sam Cann's latest update is now posted over on the ADVISORY page.
  • March 14 a No real updates from yesterday's County Commission meeting which lasted just 12 minutes.
  • March 14 a  The newly formed tourism committee is working to put together tourism draws for the county. The next event is an Easter themed event. Later this Spring comes a county wide clean up and yard sale plus the two day Elk River Fest. Pretty cool stuff all with the notion, build it and they will come.
  • March 14 a One of our Appalachian traits is to be skeered of outsiders. Anything new, watch out. Keep an eye on em, if they're here, they're up to no good.
  • March 14 a If we want new $$$$ coming into the Nation of Clay, we have to get away from that trait.
  • March 14 a About this time last year a new guy bought some land and set up what the sign calls, an adventure camp, Ark Mountain.
  • March 14 a True the guy got started off on the  wrong foot with Hiriam Lewis, looks like Ark Mountain is poised to offer a mountain side festival all their own this Spring.
  • March 14 p Here's a link to an online web portal for the music portal. Sounds like fun!
  • March 13 a   Clay Roane PSD meets Thursday evening. Agenda is posted over on the ADVISORY page.
  • March 13 a To start your day:  Those who live by the sword get shot by those who don't.
  • March 13 a Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day drinking beer.
  • March 13 a When you go into court, you are putting yourself in the hands of twelve people, who weren't smart enough to get out of jury duty.
  • March 12 p  Lets do some catching up
  • MArch 12 p County Commission meets Wed morning.
  • March 12 p Schools have been down for two days and municipal wa wa customers have been asked to conserve water for four days. Since last wed early, many Clayonians were on a Boil Water Order (BWO).
  • March 12 p There is that wittle paper of in downtown Clay that's been reporting Clay County PSD had a broken  water pump and that was the reason for the outage.
  • March 12 p That ain't true. The Town of Clay's water plant had the blown up pump plus Dwana Murphy works for the Town not Clay County PSD as reported in that little out of county rag.
  • March 12 p The Boil Water Order ended yesterday at 11:30am but without the pump operating, the storage tanks could not be filled. Thus, with supplies next to nothin, schools were canceled. Turns out those brats along with  bathroom and kitchen duties, what was left in the tank, it would have been gone in no time.
  • March 12 p The Town of Clay supplies water to Clay County PSD. The Town of Clay issued the BWO last week. The PSD did not.
  • March 12 p  According to PSD Chair Greg Fitzwater, the Town never told the PSD about a BWO. The Office Manager confirmed that the PSD received a notice that the BWO was over, but added, she never saw anything implementing the BWO
  • March 12 p  With many aged people, with many little kids, and for that matter, anybody else that consumes the dirty crap, Boil Water Orders are serious business and can be life threatening in a heart beat. The normal water safety level at best, sucks.
  • March 12 p Here's a pretty good look at what's wrong with both tap water and bottled water.
  • March 12 p During tonight's Town Council meeting, the public was told: a new pump would come in at $8000; the town opted for repair parts costing nearly $2000; the repairs were made today; storage tanks are now filling up; and, looks like the crisis is over for now.
  • March 12 p Read on the internet that soft drinks, coffee, tea and even bottled water are bad for ya. The portal suggested drinking juices, not watered down, colored, fake tasting punch drinks but real juices.
  • March 12 p Since the internet never fibs, the ace cub reporter picked up a half gallon jug of pure apple juice and preceded to get healthy. In about a day and a half, by MOnday mid day, the Apple Juice was all gone.
  • March 12 p About as soon as the plastic container was empty, his belly started rolling, tossing. Within minutes the thunder squirts started marring the ceramic throne. In a four hour period, the balding Mel Gibson look alike lost 5 pounds of  the lumpy soup.
  • March 12 p Now 24 hours later, the guy is feeling better, has regained 2 pounds, and learned, apple juice may be healthy for ya but only in smaller quantities
  • March 12 p For yesterday's online brain teaser, it was tricky. Many people got the locked in stone answer, Paul McCartney.
  • March 12 p  Truth is, it is well documented, Paul McCartney never sang nor played on Donovan's Atlantis tune.  Mark Lewisohn, regarded as the world's leading authority on the Beatles, does not support the statement, Neither The Complete Beatles Chronicles (New York: Harmony Books, 1992) nor The Beatles Day by Day: A Chronology 1962-1989 (New York: Harmony Books, 1987 & 1990) mentions McCartney's participation on this song. According to Lewisohn's chronology, (Lewisohn, The Beatles Day by Day, page 110) McCartney spent the month of November 1968 mostly at his farm in Scotland.
  • March 12 p Also, according to Donovan in a 2008 interview with Goldmine Magazine, McCartney did not sing the backing vocals. The album's liner notes, which state that the song was recorded in Los Angeles in November 1968, do not list McCartney as a performer on the album.
  • March 11 late p ALL CLAYBERRY SCHOOLS WILL CLOSED TUESDAY
  • March 11 late p Once again the problem..... Town of Clay wa wa operations and lack of enough wet stuff to operate the schools
  • March 11a The Town of Clay Boil Water Order was lifted today at 11:30am.
  • March 11 a It is our understanding the water pump remains down. Conserve wa wa for now
  • March 11 a Some of the U S Post Office cut backs went into affect Saturday March 9th. For instance, down at Procious, daily hours stop at 3:30 plus the office is closed two hours for lunch , 11:30 to 1:30. Saturday hours of operation are 7:30 to 11am only.
  • March 11 a And for our brain tease: Which Beatle sang backup vocals and played tambourine for Donovan's Atlantis  album? Email answers.
  • March 11 a  The BOIL WATER ORDER continues as does the Town of Clay call to conserve water use.
  • March 11 a Tonight's BDA meeting has been rescheduled to March 18th due to the water outage

  • March 11 a  Gray skies but it's already 60 degrees. One week ago today we had snow on the ground.

  •
  • March 10 p Clay County Schools will be closed MOnday March 11th. Snow?
  • March 10 p Nope. Potable water supplies from the Town of Clay are very low. Schools get real messy when toilets can't be flushed. It's not any better without safe wa wa for kitchens and drinking fountains.
  • March 10 p How many clickers know the Town, Maysel, and Two Run areas have been on a BOIL WATER ORDER for five days? It's true
  • March 10 p The way we're getting it, a wa wa pump went kapuut and somewhere in the removal, a valve was turned the wrong way and the wet stuff in the lines drained back that wrong way.
  • March 10 p  State regulators maintain a web site of all Boil Water Orders. If you take a look, the Town of Clay has a habit of not getting their BWO's posted. Wonder why that is????
  • March 10 p Saturday in the Nation of Clay was beautiful with bright sunshine and warm temps.
  • March 10p  Clayonians spent the day washing winter off cars, windows, decks, siding and more. Late in the afternoon some residents received tele calls to conserve water usage. The call came a little late.
  • March 10 p  Looking back....
  • March 10 p The Communicator has provided a lot of info on the school system's deficit posture, possible state take over plans, and the most recent hazing resulting in injury at CHS
  • March 10 p Sometimes a second look at those Pentagon supplied info is worth your time..
  • March 10 p When the states demanded a plan to get the system back in the black. Tanner sent the a two page work out to en.
  • March 10 p  That plan offered a four instances on what went wrong, a reason (excuse) and created the 1/2 million+ dollar deficit.
  • March 10 p Instance one, KT wrote of the "disallowance" of funding TSS employees. He said that the folks were originally paid out of a grant and then not. Examples of TSS employees include Geoff Hamrick, Andy Haynes, Harvey Church, Jeffery Krauklis, Danny Dawson, David Stone.....
  • March 10 p   Number 2,3, and 4, no funding for a half time attendance director, and full time nutrition and treasurer directors.   KT explained that a recent audit mandated such director slots.
  • March 10 p  If there is no dollars available to pay someone, the answer may not be easy but is pretty straight forward.
  • March 10 p It's hard to believe those positions are the bulk of the financial problems at the Pentagon.
  • March 10 p   With the Cluck of the Works seeing so few flaws during the Big Odor Elem building project, that debt mounted up quickly.
  • March 10 p Some other debt, deficit,  may be left over from decades ago.
  • March 10 p It's just all of a sudden, the state folks demanded the record, the books, reflect the truth.
  • March 10 p With birthdays this week, Happy Birthday wishes extended to Tiff Farmer and Amanda Moore
  • March 9 a This is pretty cool. An asteroid the size of a city block will fly pass the earth this weekend.
  • March 9 a Fairmont Senior beat the Lady Panthers Thursday night. After a  great season, the home team, they're done.
  • March 9 a Fairmont beat our butts not with great long shots or excellent ball handling, they did it with lay ups. One after another, the drove in and laid it up. We had no defense
  • March 9 Gardeners are turning over dirt. The Farm Store has fruit trees and bushes for sale.
  • March 9 a All of a sudden, it feels like Spring.
  • March 9 a Enjoy!
  • March 8    7:59a H E White Elem will be closed today. no power.
  • March 7 p Clay County Schools will be operating on a two hour delay Friday  morning.
  • March 7 a No not snow or outages but because half the county will be at the Civic Center tonight watching the Lady Panthers in tournament action.
  • March 7 a Go Lady Panthers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • March 7 a For many, a they head off to State Basketball Tournament action tonight, this is the biggest day of their lives. Go Lady Panthers.
  • March 7 a For those wondering, West Virginia Secondary Schools Athletic rules make sportscasting tonight's match up by local radio stations, no can do.
  • March 7 a  Can a local library censor web browsing of legal web sites? Stuff like devil worshipping, wiccan practices, and such. Some publicly funded libraries are doing just that. On Tuesday Federal Judge E Richard Webber ordered such practices to stop. Once again, thank goodness for the ACLU and their efforts to keep free speech alive and flowing.
  • March 7 a 60% of all corn grown now goes to fuel needs. For 30 years, gasoline has been laced with ethanol. Since inclusion, gas mileage rates have gone down and engine blow ups and blow outs have increased.
  • March 7 a Now farm groups and big corps are pushing for a 15% rate for ethanol in gasoline. Kansas already allows 15% in gas. Other corn producing states have the change on the books and ready to go into affect soon.
  • March 7 a Our government back the change
  • March 7a There's a problem. In every case, when the 15% rate is introduced to small motors like grass whackers, lawn mowers, boat  and cycle motors, the engines blow up.
  • March 7 a Read the full story on the problems coming our way and the power of big business sticking their noses in our business.
  • March 7 a West Virginians have an absolute right to own and use guns. Our Constitution reads: ARTICLE III  3-1. A person has the right to keep and bear arms for the defense of self, family, home and state, and for lawful hunting and recreational use.
  • March 7 a If you look on our EVENTS page you'll see a very interesting organizational meeting slated for this Saturday.
  • March 7 a Some are questioning if this group is some kind of militia forming. Others wonder, what the heck is a militia anyway?
  • March 7  We don't have answers for either question but may after Saturday's gathering.
  • March 6 late p Delmas Clinton Young, 83, see OBITUARY page
  • March 6 later From the email bag and concerning Monday night's packed house School Board meeting:  I was able to attend the board meeting last night and was not impressed at all with the way things were handled. I have heard it stressed that our students need to be respect to their teachers, prinicpals etc., for years, yet they spoke with each other without repect at all. Things were brought up that were personnel issues, yet a parent could not even have a topic tabled for future discussion. Although said parent, had tried to have her topic placed on the agenda, to no avail, she was talked over and her topic regarded as of little importance. The following is the impression I have after sleeping on it and trying to discover just what is going on.:  Sometimes even the prettiest flower, can be dead at the roots, before it loses its beauty. Yet when the right gardener comes along, and digs in the dirt, to expose the rot, and restart growth, is the true extent of damage discovered. Such is the state of our local board of education.

  • I can only pray that the State comes in.  I think that would be the best thing all around.  Thank you for your time.
  • March 6 5am  Around an inch of snow is on the ground. The entire Town of Clay water system is now under a BOIL WATER ORDER. Electric is off in parts of the county including Twistabout Road
  • March 6 5am   CLAY COUNTY SCHOOLS ARE OPERATING ON A TWO HOUR DELAY this morning. Sleep in kids.
  • March 6 a   Other than that , everything is great in Clayberry.
  • March 6 a The Communicator made it out the door Tuesday mid afternoon. 24 solid pages of information on what makes Clayberry tick and screw up
  • March 6 a Our lead story provides in depth coverage of Monday night's School Board meeting where the room was packed and overflowed into the hallway, fingers were pointed,  a teacher called a secretary a liar, and public input was cut short.
  • March 6 a  That one story is worth the 70 cent asking price.
  • March 6 a What American military man said of Vietnam: "We met the enemy and he was us."
  • March 5  8:45 pm The Town of Clay, Maysel and Two Run areas are now under a BOIL WATER ORDER. Don't drink it unless you boil it first
  • March 4 a The start of each new month brings on many public meetings. Tonight the School Board and BDA both meet at 6pm, the BDA in the County Commission room and the School Board up at the Pentagon.
  • March 4 a Tuesday beginning at 4pm, the CAEZ gang assembles for another couple hours of entertainment.
  • March 4 a  With their agenda properly posted, the School Board meeting sounds pretty interesting. They have at least one teacher coming to speak as well as a rep from the a teacher's union, and a disciplinary hearing for a high school student.
  • March 4 a  Facing a deficit and in financial crisis mode, painful cutbacks are in order and hopefully will be discussed in detail tonight. There is no Open Meeting Law exception which allows secret time discussions on ANYTHING financial.    With Charleston Gazette reporting on a high school athlete being hospitalized after a locker room hazing incident, and the parents demanding the coach be fired, sure is plenty for the Pentagon to address tonight.
  • March 4 a Tuesday's Communicator will offer updates a plenty on the deficit and school hazing incidents. All that will make a lot more sense if you have read our last edition. Did I hear someone say they haven't? Shame Shame Shame.    Although Go Mart in Clay has sold out, other venders still have copies available. By this time tomorrow, Poof!, all gone
  • March 4 a Several issues are facing the BDA this time around. One is what to do with the old state road garage building at Two Run. By April 1st, all the old Mountaineer Liquidator items will be out of the place and the structure will be  ready for another attempt at prosperity.
  • March 4 a Maybe more important is what to do with our on the job Economic Development Director, Amanda Moore. She is actually employed and supervised by a three person board representing the CAEZ, CCC, and BDA.
  • March 4 a With the CAEZ financially strapped and now the CCC crying the sky is falling, look for a change in who actually pays and houses Ms Moore.
  • March 4 a Between keeping somebody on the job that  actually does something, figuring out how to proceed with the old State Road garage, and dealing with BDA Boardsters that don't show up for meetings, has all the makings of a dandy public meeting tonight beginning at 6pm.
  • March 4 a Bored? Did you say you're bored? Ain't no reason for that. Attend a public meeting and see what makes Clayberry so very special. All kinds of entertainment and free too! Don't get no better than that!
  • March 3 a Clayberry's Pentagon made the front page above the fold story in today's Charleston Gazette.
  • March 3 a From the article:  Clay County school administrators are standing behind a high school basketball coach, even though one student's parents say their son was hospitalized with multiple injuries because the coach failed to report hazing.
  • March 3 a The parents are demanding Coach Scott Gibson be fired and to that end, they have filed a formal complaint.
  • March 3 a Here's the link. . Get it now, archived Gazette links drop.
  • March 3 a A man and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the coffee each morning.  The wife said, 'You should do it because you get up first,  and then we don't have to wait as long to get our coffee. The husband said, 'You are in charge of cooking around here and  you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee.'  Wife replies, 'No, you should do it, and besides, it is in the Bible that the man should do the coffee.'  Husband replies, 'I can't believe that, show me..'  So she fetched the Bible, and opened the New Testament and showed him at the top of several pages, that it indeed says 'HEBREWS'
  • March 3 a  Enjoy your Sunday.
  • March 2 a This is the last day we beg for dollars during our annual online buddy can you spare a dime campaign. Our online sponsors help get this animal alive and are appreciated. All of us know, it takes a lot of money to do just about anything. If you think having a place for up to the minute info on the Great nation of Clay, now is the time to help us out.
  • March 2 a For those that have already contributed, thank you. For those holding back, our snail mail address is: Delta; 2278 Main Street; Clay WV 25043
  • March 2 a Answer to the online quiz, Lumpy Brannum was Captain Kangaroo's (Bob Keeshan) side kick who often presented a message of kindness to animals and making friends. Lumpy had a long career as a jazz musician, story teller and actor.
  • March 2 a  "It is my contention that most people are not mugged every day, that most people in this world do not encounter violence every day. I think we prepare people for violence, and I think just as importantly we prepare people for the definition of being gentle." - Bob Keeshan.
  • March 2 a Snow continues this Saturday morning in Clayberry. Enjoy it while it's here. Won't be long til we're saying, It's too D*** hot!
  • March 1 p Tired of those pesky brats clinging to ya? Why not get them out of the house and into something worthwhile. Clay Little League has a new ad button on the home page. Over there is all the info you need to gets those kids signed up for the Spring season.
  • March 1 p Note: We tried to figure out a way to link the Little League site for Tweeter and facebook users. For the life of us, we can't figure it out. Might be because we don't do the social media thang. We failed. Sorry. All the needed info is on Clay Little League web site. Hope it helps to get those curtain climbers out of the house!
  • March 1 Welcome to the new month.  Snow's on the ground and at 10am, the temp is around freezing. Weekend predictions call for cold winter weather to continue witha  slight chance of some bright sunshine on Sunday. For your morning dose of as the compost pile turns...
  • March 1 a Once again, the world is about to end as Congress decides the fate of big Corporate profits as part of the sequestration issue. Two months ago the sky was ready to cave in when the media hyped fiscal cliff was about to drop us.
  • March 1 a Does anybody believe corporate funders of the politicians are going to take a hit? With little else talking heads can zero in on, don't expect a last minute deal at midnight. They and Washington can run on this bologna for at least another two weeks. In the end, it will be all hype without substance.
  • March 1 a It's very important for local leaders to keep hot button issues away from the public meeting setting. Nothing is worse than when someone asked them a straight forward question and demands an answer.
  • March 1 a On Monday night's School Board agenda, Amanda Shelton is poised to do just that. There is little doubt that Shelton wants answers on how budget cuts were made, what was given priorities, why are education related activities getting the axe.
  • March 1 a Should make for a very interesting School Board meeting!

  • March 1 a  OK brainsters, Who did Lumpy Brannum play on the TV show, Captain Kangaroo? Email answers. You might win a gazillion bucks... or not.
