January 2008 News

  • Jan 31 a Last night's CCHS basketball game looked more like a football game than B Ball. We won, 62 to 40 but it was a bruiser for sure. JV also won last night, 49 -47. Go Clay!
  • Jan 31 a   Notice the new ad above. Between it and the first yard sale notice on the EVENTS page, it must be Spring in the Appalachian Mountains.
  • Jan 31 a We'd like to add some juicy newsy item but little in going on..... except over at Clay Development Corp where, according to Linda Adkins, the CDC gang is refusing to hand out W-2s to anyone that quit  the super secret social service provider in 2007. While working employees were given their W-2s before the Jan 31st deadline, those that left the group mid year, they have to wait.
  • Jan 31 a  Some in the county say, I'll never vote for a black man for President. Others say, I ain't voting for no stinkin' woman! How about some emails clickers. What's your prediction?  Is Clayberry that prejudiced? Between Obama de Bama and McCain, who's the winner. Between Hitlery and McCain, again. your thoughts please.
  • Jan 31 a  If want your emails printed in The Communicator, please say so.
  • Jan 30 a  Last night the CCHS Panthers barely got past Calhoun, 65 to 52. It was nip and tuck all night long.  Tonight at 7:30 they take on the rough and rowdy So Harrision team. Come out and support the home team.
  • Jan 30 a  Yesterday WYAP put out the plea for a volunteer sportscaster for tonight's ball game. Listen in tonight to hear Top Badge Randy Holcomb as YAP's  guest sportscaster.
  • Jan 30 a  Is your home on the auction block? It may be soon. Here\s the scoop and it ain't pretty.
  • Jan 30 a  Do you think riding an illegal bike warrants getting Tazed? Happened down South and the Badges down there say, sure it's OK.
  • Jan 30 a Sure that satellite is big and weighs a bunch, but don't worry, it might miss us. Might.
  • Jan 30 a How about an update on stuffing a battery probe in your brain to improve memory loss. Seems to be working.
  • Jan 30 a   The White House will ask Congress next week for another $70 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, an amount that would help cover operational costs only.
  • Jan 29 p  Tonight the CCHS Panthers start a home game stand. Tip off is 7:30pm Go Clay!    Support the home team by showing up for the action. YAP radio will be broadcasting the game.
  • Jan 29 p    The radio station needs some help Wed night. Sportscaster Robert Thomas can't do the CCHS game. They need someone to sit in with Phil Carte for the coverage. Not hard to do and a lot of fun too. How about you?  Call Phil at 4954 or the station 8353.
  • Jan 29 p Need a Job? See JOBS page now
  • Jan 29 p  We might have some real contests this election cycle. For instance..
  • Jan 29 p In the 11th Senatorial District  we have 6 candidates including one Republicrat. Candidates include: Sue Blake Andersen (Craigsville), Jerry Cook (Rainelle), Elizabeth Sampson (Clay), Dr. Carlotta Evans (Summersville),  Aubry Wilson (R., Upshur Co), and Bill Laird (Fayette). With each county supporting their own candidate, who has the least political baggage comes into play.
  • If candidate Sampson can hold all of Clay and pick up a few votes in the Nicholas and Webster counties, Clayberry may have its first sitting elected Senator since little Mr Sticky Fingers, Randy Schoonover.
  • Jan 29 p In the 33rd House of Delegates race (serves Northern Clay), with all Demorats running, the race will be won in the primary election in May.
  • Jan 29 p Candidates in the 33rd: Dave Walker from Clay, Ron Blankenship, Diann Clothier, Larry Cottrell, all from Calhoun County, and Rick Frame from Gilmer
  • Jan 29 p With three running from Calhoun and Gilmer County chopped down to about 300 votes; the votes will be watered down big time.  Dave Walker has his best chance of winning ever. It'll take about 2000 votes to win district wide. Clay could walk out with a delegate in Dave Walker.
  • Jan 29 p Rain got you down? Depressed? Old car hard to start? Check out the CLASSIFIED page for that white Cadilac. Mr Johnson out Harrison has it and is it ever nice with a capitol N.
  • Jan 29 a  Wanda Nellene (King) Hanna, 58, of Duck, see OBITUARY page
  • Jan 29 a  Fabion Brown over at Valley Fork  lost two "shocking collars" out of the back of his truck Sunday evening. The collars and small test light were in a black plastic box. The collars are worthless to anyone else without the handheld shocker unit. If anyone finds the lost goods,  how about calling Fabion 587-9927
  • Jan 29 a Last night my President spoke. He told us all is well and not to worry. It was his last State of Union speech. Good
  • Jan 29 a     The economy is in good shape?  Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased at an annual average rate of 2.6 percent from 2001 through 2006. This ranks the Dubbya administration 6th out of seven administrations since 1960. Only the administration of Bush's father had slower annual growth.
  • Jan 29 a  How much is the war really costing you? Here's  a site that provides answersin every county in the nation and state. It's sad.            Thanks KL for the link
  • Jan 29 a    We often give county leadership double H. Here we go again....
  • Jan 29 a Last night came a call for an ambulance in Dixie. A 15 year old female was choking, she couldn't breathe. Dixie is on the Fayette, Nicholas, and Clay County line. 911 Dispatchers tried in vain to find a unit down there. No General nor JanCare Ambulances were available. 5 miles away sat the Lizemores ambulance, brand new and ready for service.
  • Jan 29 a Instead of calling on Lizemore they chose to call the nearest Clay Ambulance, more than 20 miles away. Lizemores was never toned.    Sometime later, the Clay Ambulance driver even reported he was traveling past LVFD.    With the Clay Ambulance in service and heading to Montgomery General Hospital, that left the bulk of the county without an ambulance!
  • Jan 29 a  One night earlier, Lizemores was "toned" by 911. They responded quickly and got the job done.
  • Jan 29 a  Our guess is, 911 dispatch was told to never again call out the Lizemore unit. If that's the case, our nitwit leaders are risking lives.  Sounds like a great opportunity for an attorney to make some real money. A costly lawsuit may be needed this time.
  • Jan 29 a  more coming
  • Jan 27 a  Happy last Monday of the new month in the new year.
  • Jan 27 a   The Bob Stover wrestling classic is usually a hard fought contest. Saturday event raised some eyebrows. When one wrestler grabbed the... sack of another, the wresting match turned into a fight. A real fight.
  • Jan 27 a January has been a tough month for our Top Badge. A thug drives off in the Tahoe with Holcomb in tow, he got his foot ran over by the bad guy, and then has to shoot the crap out of the Tahoe to get it back.
  • Jan 27 a Ask the Sheriff about his encounter with that  young strong wrestler. Can anybody else lift Randy's 500 pounds?
  • Jan 27 a   And the month ain't over yet!
  • Jan 27 a Last night we heard the first Lizemore Ambulance run heading over to Montgomery General. and Yes, they were using the countywide, 911 dispatch.
  • Jan 27 a Not naming names but some of us may have used web sites to download music. No finger pointing now but you, we, me, millions of people a day do it or have done it. It now appears the recording industry has come around and offering LEGAL, free music, about 2,500,000 tunes and counting. Not all the bugs are worked out but, today is the first day of the new day minus greedy record companies coming after us with gazilion dollar fines.
  • Jan 26 p  Barbara J. Foster, 61, of Bickmore, see OBITUARY page
  • Jan 26 p Our look back...
  • Jan 26 p By the time you finish reading this post, one minute, our nation will have spent another $220,000 in a hopeless oil war. That $15 billion  a month for Dubbya's war, most all our problems could be solved including a college education to all graduating seniors. That's in just one month.
  • Jan 26 p National polls show we don't give a S*** about the war or the American soldier serving over there. 8 more, 5 more, 1 more death is too many
  • Jan 26 p There have been 4,237 coalition deaths -- 3,931 Americans, two Australians, 174 Britons, 13 Bulgarians, one Czech, seven Danes, two Dutch, two Estonians, one Fijian, one Hungarian, 33 Italians, one Kazakh, one Korean, three Latvian, 22 Poles, three Romanians, five Salvadoran, four Slovaks, 11 Spaniards, two Thai and 18 Ukrainians -- in the war in Iraq as of January 25, 2008, according to a CNN report.
  • Jan 26 p Lets see now, we borrow from China to buy oil from the Saudi's. Does that make sense?
  • Jan 26 p During Wed's CCC meeting, an agenda item included discussion on  the many many issues of service, dependability, and 24/7 performance of the Clay County Ambulance Service. There were no answers.
  • Jan 26 p Last Wed an Economic Development Summit was held in the Commission room. Reps from the CAEZ and BDA along with the CCC were in attendance. After 90 minutes of bragging the meeting ended without any kind of game plan or commitment for improvement of Clay. The only decision made: Meet again in July, six months into the year without directive.
  • Jan 26 p In the way of Clayberry as usual, Wed evening, a hearing was held where the public found out, the site of the new $270,000 911 tower, roads built, gravel laid, trees cut down, and site leveled, the people that signed the lease AREN'T the people that own the site. We're building on some one else's land.
  • Jan 26 p  Town Council met Friday. Faced with a sewer plant operating in the red since being built and nearly as bad financials through out the town, Council decided to hire a higher cost sewer plant operator, another water plant operator, and additional office help. With a water rate increase already voted on, watch for the upturn to be substantial. WV Water Co., where are you?
  • Jan 26 p A brand new ambulance service opened for business Friday when state regulators placed the certification sticker on Lizemores Fire Dept ambulance. You no longer have to call Nicholas County for a ride now, just call LVFD.
  • Jan 26 p  Man it got cold this past week. Two hour delays in the school system made it a little more bare able to the 3 year olds waiting beside the ride and out in the cold.
  • Jan 26 p The election season opened in Clayberry. Saturday night at midnight was the final moment to sign up for office. There were some surprises this year
  • Jan 26 p  Ivydale's Elizabeth Sampson placed her name on the ballot in the state Senatorial race, the spot held by Shirley Love. In the five county district, with Sampson from here and Bill Laird from Fayette County, this should be a heads up battle to the finish. If Clay County stands behind Sampson, we have a reaaaal chance at having our own Senator.
  • Jan 26 p The 29th House of Delegates district includes the Town of Clay and south. 29th Delegate race candidates include incumbents Pino, Perry, Staggers, a Demo that ousted last time around, Tom Louisis, and from Clay County, Procious crane operator David Walker. Two Republicrats signed up: Marshall Clay from Fayetteville and Daniel Wright from Pax. Walker has tried many times over to win a Delegate perch without luck. This time around, with only one candidate from our county in the race, Clayberry has a long shot chance at a May primary winner. With a Repub in the Nov race, the chances are slimmer of having a Clayonian under the gold dome next year.
  • Jan 26 p Locally, in the County Commission race, incumbent Peter Triplett has a formidable opponent with Dave Pierson. Mike Pierson is also in the race. With two candidates with the same last name, confusion may play apart in this contest. Many are questioning, who will Mike Pierson voters draw from, Dave?
  • Jan 26 p  The School Board may be the one to watch this time around. There are two District B and one District C slots open. Three seats.  Incumbents are Gene King, RB Legg, newly appointed Jim Dawson, Morgan Triplett and youthful Ronnie Rogers. Gene and RB are traditional high vote getters. But with Jim Dawson in the race and a candidate from District A, that's Ronnie, someone could get bumped. Single shoting will be a big factor in this contest.
  • Jan 26 p 18 year old Ronnie Rogers graduated from CCHS last year. Although very wet behind the ear, wouldn't it be nice to have some first hand experience of life in Clayberry schools on the Board.
  • Jan 26 p Morgy Triplett has worked for the ambulance service for nearly two decades. During that time he has helped about everyone in the county during tough times. Morgy may be the sleeper this election. People have long memories.
  • Jan 26 p   Top Badge Randy Holcomb has several challengers in his bid for a second term in office. Challengers include perennial candidate Joe Morris from Maysel, Samuel Morris from Big Otter, and Lizemore\s Tom Auxier.
  • Jan 26 p  Joe Morris, this time running as a Demorat, is capable of earning around 500 votes. Samuel Morris is a Clay County native who spent his working life as a Badge down South. Tom Auxier has mostly been a construction type and arch foe of neighbor Billy Truman in the ongoing property/ rights of way land dispute.
  • Jan 26 p  With Joe Morris a few votes here and there, Auxier taking votes from Randy's neighborhood, Samuel Morris may be the benefactor in May. Long shot, but none the less, plausible to some.
  • Jan 26 p One note on candidates. More may come. How? It's allowed to mail in candidate applications. More forms may come as late as the middle of next week. Also, if a party doesn't have a candidate on the ballot, the political party can appoint some one to run.
  • Jan 16 p That was our week in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, Clay County West Virginia. With an election coming, the next 3 months may be lively. Oh boy! Election Season is finally here! Merry Election to One and All.
  • Jan 26 10:00 p  Clay County has a candidate running for State Senate. Her name is Elizabeth Sampson from Ivydale.
  • Jan 26 p Today's the last day to file for public office. Deadline is midnight, in person or a postmark.
  • Jan 26 p  We have a brand new Sheriff candidate. His name is Tom Auxier. Since Auxier already has one of those black cowboy  vests and boots, he's set for office.  Since he's a singer, we might have a Singin' Cowboy for Sheriff.  With his long running dispute with Billy Truman, might make for a great race if both ran.
  • Jan 26 p Jim Samples finally signed up for the Prosecutor's race. Marshall Robinson is running for County Surveyor. Robinson is the only Republicrat seeking office in the county.
  • Jan 26 p Delegate Bill Stemple has bowed out of that race and switched to running for Sheriff of Calhoun County.
  • Jan 26 p In the 11th Senatorial race, long time Senator Shirley Love is retiring. We're hearing rumors of a Clayonian ready to signed up. Right now only Bill Laird from Fayette County is running from the 11th.
  • Jan 26 p In small town America, on filing night, the place to be is the Courthouse which is open tot he public. Might see some fun down there tonight.
  • Jan 25 p  Last Sept., the Lizemores Fire Dept. received a brand new ambulance to serve the far end of Clayberry. Today that ambulance was fully certified and licensed by the state folks. When Clay County Ambulance Service doesn't, won't, can't respond, try the newest ambulance service, LVFD, 587-6056.
  • Jan 25 p  587-6056 is the number since the County Commission has been cautious of allowing LVFD access to the county's 911 dispatch service.
  • Jan 25 p  Clay County is listed as a speed trap on a national web site. Check it out.
  • Jan 25 p  Prosecutor Jim Samples finally signed up for office.
  • Jan 25 p  After eating a gob of sharp cheddar cheese a while back, that ace cub reporter had some real problems, taper tantrums was what this web site posted.
  • Jan 25 p The Town of Clay may have that same problem, sort of... Their Class I sewer plant operator is resigning. Without an operator, where do the logs go? That's the problem, they float right down the Elk. The Enviro folks don't like that. A couple years back the Town was fined $50,000 for a big herd of floaters heading down the Elk.
  • Jan 25 p During today's emergency meeting, a DEP rep was on hand to remind Council: you are required to have a full time Class II  (more expensive) operator at the log factory. Council motioned to place hiring ads in Charleston , Webster and Nicholas Counties to begin the search for a new log roper. Pay: $12/hour
  • Jan 25 p Also from today's meeting, one of their water operators , Jim Mullins, resigned. Tonight is his last night on the job. Ads will be placed in the same papers for that position. Must be a Class II operator for either position.
  • Jan 25 p Town Recorder, water operator, Dwana Murphy said she planned to quit her recorder position unless the Town hired a full time office clerk. She says she is just plum overworked. Look for that job opening during the next regular meeting of Town Council.
  • Jan 25 p During the discussions, Mayor Brown insisted on the wa wa operator being full time. He mentioned all the overtime the two regular operators were receiving (80 OT hours per month, average).
  • Jan 25 p If Brown gets his way, a new street department person will also be added to the Town budget.
  • Jan 25
  • Jan 25 a  Clay County Schools are on a two delay Friday Jan 25
  • Jan 25 a    An emergency meeting agenda was posted on the front door of the Clay Water plant  Thursday afternoon. The brief agenda for Town Council action mentions just two items: Sewer operator, water operator. The meeting is to convene at 1pm Friday
  • Jan 25 a   State code and Attorney General opinions allows for such meetings when an emergency situation arises. It has to be for something that can't wait. Flooding, epidemic or other disaster comes to mind .
  • Jan 25 a  What's going on in the Town? The emergency meeting agendas are required to tell the public specifically what the problem is. The Town's agenda doesn't.
  • Jan 25 a Someone email us if they know. Thanks in advance
  • Jan 25 a The Lady Panthers are suppose to play Gilmer tonight at 7:30pm. Will advise if the game is canceled.
  • Jan 25 a   A note from that Economic Summit held Wed afternoon.... during the dog and pony show, someone spoke on the good of  college classes  being held at the old Valley Fork school. One of those speaking of high hopes and  a bright future for the college classes was county Commissioner Slinkinooooooger
  • Jan 25 a It was Commissioners Slinky and Fran King that voted NO to $25,000 in CCC funding for the much needed project. They didn't say well maybe we could go $20,000 or $10,000 or even $1000. They said flat out NO
  • Jan 25 a  Peter Triplett was the only Commission showing support for the CAEZ spearheaded purchase of the old school for college classes.
  • Jan 25 a  Only about a 1/2 inch of snow fell Thursday afternoon. Combine that with cold temps, 5 mph wind gusts, some slush underneath and WhammO, wicked road conditions in Clayberry. Cars sliding off the road every which a ma way.
  • Jan 25 a  County Assessor Teresa Lane is feeling left out.No one is running against her in the election. The asssessor is the highest paid elected in the county.  How about you? $65,000 per year and part time to boot. Saturday night at  midnight is the deadline for filing for office.
  • Jan 25 a Clay County has no one running for the Senate seat being vacated by Shirley Love. a Strong candidate from Clay, Jerry Slinky for instance, could rally Webster, Clay, Upshur, and Nicholas Counties. Do the numbers. It could work.
  • Jan 25 a Want to have some fun? If you live in "A" District, run for School Board. With no one else running from A,  a half way succesful candidate could "squeeze out" the many already signed up from B District.
  • Jan 24 a Meant to mention in Wednesday's post, Jim Dawson was appointed to fill Dave Pierson's unexpired seat on the School Board. Jim's also a candidate for the Board this time around. Shame he didn't sign up for the House of Delegates where he could do some good for the county!
  • Jan 24 a Speaking of candidates and elections, Clayberry has a great sense of humor. Here's one. People are laughing that Joe Morris may make a good Sheriff for a couple of reasons. One, he's about as round as Randy Holcomb, and since Joe wears short pants much of the year, cutting off Randy's britches would save the county some money. The second, Joe owns all the car washes in the county, maybe he would wash the county cruisers for free
  • Jan 24 a  Wed was a bust for the county of Clay....
  • Jan 24 a During yesterday's Commission meeting, it came to light, a $25,000 grant for new digital maps has gone nowhere. The guy hasn't accomplished zip. He came to the meeting, put on a power point  dog and pony show  trying to cover up the mess. Turns out, after months of nothinghood, he still wanted paid. didn't happen yesterday.
  • Jan 24 a Then there was that long awaited Eco Dev Summit where the BDA, CAEZ and CCC were suppose to bond and come out with a new game plan. There was lots of high fives but little else during the meeting. After  90 minutes of blah blah blah, three areas of concern were raised. Volunteers were asked to sign up for the work. Only two people signed up to try and improve life in Clayberry.
  • Jan 24 a It gets worse clickers. At 5pm the CCC convened again to hear a property dispute. Not just any property dispute, but the land under the new 911 tower in the Northern end of the county. The county agreed to lease a chunk of land to erect the $250,000+  911 tower on.  With a road cut, graveled, trees knocked down, and the site leveled and prepared, a survey map shows the county negotiated with the wrong person. The tower is not erected yet but we didn't hear anybody say, stop construction.
  • Jan 24 a Saturday night is the last time to sign up for elected office. So far no Republicrats and no challengers for Assessor Teresa Lane. How about you? Stop in at the County Clerk's office for details.
  • Jan 23 a Today at 10 the County Commission meets in regular session. At 3:30 today our best chance at anything ever happening.... It's the EcoDev Summit in the Commission room. Members of the public should attend and throw rocks at people who waste time by starting  side track discussions.
  • Jan 23 a The Sheriff's race is starting to warm up just a bit. Incumbent Randy Holcomb  was first to sign up for reelection. Yesterday, Joe Morris decided the county wanted him in office and threw his hat in the ring.
  • Jan 23 a Also from yesterday we have another Morris running for Top Badge. This one is Samuel Morris from the northern end of the county.
  • Jan 23 a That's two Morris' in the Sheriff race and two Pierson's in the County Commission race along with incumbent Peter Triplett
  • Jan 23 a  A small boy is sent to bed by his father.  Five-minutes later, "Daad..."  "What?"  "I'm thirsty.  Can you bring me a glass of water?"  "No!  You had your chance.  Lights out."  Five minutes later;  "Da-aad ..."  "What?"  "I'm thirsty.  Can I please have a drink of water?"  "I told you no!  If you ask again, I'll have to spank you!"  Five minutes later ... "Daaa-aaad?"  "What?"  "When you come in to spank me, can you bring a drink of water?"
  • Jan 22 p Ice covered the roads today. Here there and then back over there again. School kids were told, no afterschool activity program this evening. Around 2pm Queen Shoals Road was impassible.  Not even in four wheel drive vehicle. Residents of the Queen Shoals areas report little affort by the State Road crews. This afternoon, one salt shaker was seen working in the Two Run area. Bus drivers were heard given road reports from around the county. In general: Dangerous with vehicles in ditches everywhere
  • Jan 22 p We had a new candidate sign up for the Sheriff's race. Joe Morris is the lad's name. Not sure which party he signed up with this time around. In his many other Sheriff attempts, he's been signed as a Repub and as aDemorat during different election cycles. Not sure if he comes in last place each time he runs but one time I think he beat out a female candidate.
  • Jan 22 p Joe Morris' criminal record is clean. Those battery charges stemming from smacking the glasses off the ace cub reporter were dropped after the investigating officer committed suicide last Sept.
  • Jan 22 p With incumbent Top Badge Holcomb running, that makes two choices on the ballot.
  • Jan 22 p  You have until Saturday night at midnight to file for office. Sure would be nice to have some viable opponents this time around.
  • Jan 22 a With a holiday yesterday , this will be a short week but none the less, a very important week.
  • Jan 22 a Tonight the Bd of Ed meets at Clay Elem. school beginning at 6pm. On the agenda is the vote on David Pierson's replacement. Are their any guesses other than just signed up for office , Jim Dawson.
  • Jan 22 a Side note: Under the direction of then School Superintendent, Jerry Slinkinoooooooooooooger, the school system refused to follow the law and give the public 3 days notice with meeting agendas. During the Jan 2 County Commission meeting, it was Commissioner Slinky that made the motion to follow the law and give three days notice on CCC meeting agendas. Both the Bd of Ed and the CCC meet twice a month and have to adhere to the same Sunshine Laws.  Wonder what changed?
  • Jan 22 a County Commission meets Wed morning at 10 am. Later that day at 3:30pm, the CCC has asked members of the Central Appalachia Empowerment Zone (CAEZ) and the Business Development Authority (BDA) to sit down and start working together for the common good of Clay County.
  • Jan 22 a This meeting is potentially the most important meeting of the year, maybe decade. For ages, both groups have managed to blunder economic growth in Clayberry. From neither group,  nor the County Commission, there has not been one, full time, non government with benefits, employee created in Clay County. Not one.
  • Jan 22 a Part of the reason is lack of gray cells but an equally big problems exists. None of the players know what the other group is up to. And, when they do know what the other is trying, the second groups works to put a kink in the plan.
  • Jan 22 a Did we mention not one employee?
  • Jan 22 a You might take a look at the EVENTS page. Next Saturday the Lizemores FD is holding training (free) for those wanting to work as 911 dispatchers.
  • Jan 22 a Background:  LFD bought a brand new ambulance last Sept. They asked the CCC to allow 911 dispatching of their unit just like 911 does for the Clay Ambulance Service.  the Commission didn't say No or Yes. Instead they said come back later when all the T's were crossed and I's dotted. They didn't even offer a "tentative" or provisional  Yes.
  • Jan 22 a Based on that dispatcher class posting, it sure looks like the Lizemores group will start taking calls for their own ambulance real soon with or without the CCC green light.
  • Jan 22 a Good. Here's why. Once again Sunday evening, 6:30 or so, a call came in, shortness of breath, and no ambulance was available from Clay Ambulance Service NOR from surrounding agencies. None.
  • Jan 22 a That ambulance at Lizemores is much needed and is ready to go in service without costing the county one penny!
  • Jan 20 p   Finishing off this third week in Jan., bright sunshine but cold as the dickens! We hunkered down.
  • Jan 20 p    Distant politics has been in the news for months. Hitlery this and Obama de Bama that!
  • Jan 20 p    The real election season got underway last Monday when local candidates signed up for office. About every position at the courthouse is up for public nod. Interestingly enough, not one Republicrat has signed up for a run. Not one.
  • Jan 20 p Long time Senator Shirley Love decided to retire from public life. It appears Delegate Bill Stemple will not run for the district wide position. Only spoiler David Walker from Procious has signed up for the Delegate position. Walker's  few votes in the county stops any viable candidate from having a chance.
  • Jan 20 p   Randy Holcomb blasting out the windows of his police vehicle remains the butt of many jokes. When ever something loud cracks the air, for instance, a car backfiring at Go Mart, people yell out HE'S GOT MY TAHOE.
  • Jan 20 p The Lady Panthers won their second game of the season.
  • Jan 20 p  Chris Dwier was a young man that worked to escape the  dark side past. He did it. Unfortunately, a Thursday morning car wreck snuffed out his future.
  • Jan 20 p Saturday mid day, WYAP radio sponsored a walk in support of the troops. TV-8 covered the walk and for once, Clayberry was shown in a positive light.
  • Jan 20 p  Clay County has many great musicians. Saturday night a talent show was held which could have given many a chance to be heard and receive $$$ during Apple Festival shows this coming Sept. Only a couple performers showed up for the opportunity.    As has been the case with economic development, jobs, housing, tourism, another chance shot.
  • Jan 20 p With wind chill factor putting the temps down around zero or lower, we prepared for cold weather with beer, pizza and doughnuts. Cardinals returned to Clay. Blue Jays starting fighting it out at bird feeders. Politicians will soon do the same thing
  • Jan 19 p    Christopher James Dwier, 29, of Clay, see OBITUARY page
  • Jan 19 p Joshua Kyle Hilbert Jr.,  see OBITUARY page
  • Jn 19 a From the email bag:  We want to wish our MaMa Anna Coleman of Bomont a Happy Birthday on January 19, 2008, she will be 39 again, again and again.  Love Always, Brittany, Brody, James, Jordan, Mika and Savanna. So if you see our MaMa please wish her a Very Special Happy Birthday.
  • Jan 19 a The Communicator made it to the newss stands Friday afternoon around 3pm. Lead story is the first volley of Election 2008. Great reading and now on special pricing, 2 for $1.40
  • Jan 19 a Thursday morning around 3:30am scanner listeners heard traffic of a nasty car wreck near Pierson's Lumber Co. The young man killed was Chris Dwier.
  • Jan 19 a  We've warmer than expected temps today and a little sunshine. Great chance to get out and have some fun. Check out the EVENTS page for the noon time 2 mile walk and tonight's Apple Festival Talent Show at the CCHS mini auditorium. That's a FREE show!
  • Jan 18 a Shhhhh  we're still working on the paper but here's something. Remember David Walker? The crane operator? The guy who use to run for the House of Delegates each time? He's running again.
  • Jan 18 a All the election stuff in today's Communicator. Comes out around 4pm if all goes well.
  • Jan 18 a From the email bag: Happy Birthday to Dale Nottingham  January 18th. We Love You.
  • Jan 18 a Want to learn how to use a puter and get paid doing it? See ADVISORY page
  • Jan 17 a The Communicator comes out Friday. We're trying real hard to get it out on time. Well, trying a little bit anyway. If you haven't picked up the last edition, you shoould. Tomorrow's paper includes another installment of the CDC empire once again plus much much more. Besure to email over your chatters, classifieds, ads, etc by Thursday afternoon.
  • Jan 17 a No new updates until we get it typed and out the door sometime Friday afternoon.
  • Jan 17 a How about some election rambling... The 11th Senatorial district is made up of Fayette, Nicholas, Clay, and Webster counties. Bill Laird has signed up to run for Shirley Love's seat in the Senate. Laid is a long time public official from Fayette County.  There's little doubt that someone (s) from Nicholas county will also file.
  • Jan 17 a    Fayette Co has around 37,000 residents compared to our 10,000. Nicholas County is also much bigger, size and population than Clayberry. Expect around 4500 Demorats from Nicholas; 2300 from Webster; and around 2600 from Clay to vote this May.
  • Jan 17 a Is it possible for Clay to ever have a Senator again? Yes. Even with political baggage, Fayette will support their candidate, Laird. Nicholas will do the same if someone runs. With a few votes from Nicholas and Fayette and  a bunch of votes from Clay and Webster, it is entirely possible for Clay to once again have our own Senator. Why is that important? During the next term of office, redistricting takes place. If we're not real careful, our county could be chopped up in little bits and pieces making a Senator from Clay impossible in the future. This race is very important.
  • Jan 17 a Who's electable from Clay? No one else but County Commissioner Slinky!
  • Jan 17 a   While Randy White and Shirley Love represent the entire county of Clay, not so in the House of Delegates. During the last redistricting, we were chopped in half . the Town of Clay and South is represented by Perry, Pino and Staggers, 29th Disrict. The Northern end is represented by Bill Stemple, 33rd District. The northern district has half of Clay (1400 Demo), all of Calhoun (1600 Demo's) and a small chunk of Gilmer county (300 Demo voters). That make up assures Calhoun County a Delegate. They thunk anyway.
  • Jan 17 a In the 33rd House of Delegates race, incumbent Bill Stemple has yet to file. Many say he will instead run for Calhoun County Sheriff, his home county. Speculation has it that the retired School Super Ron Blankenship will file for Delegate office soon. Blankenship ran a  tight ship in Calhoun County.  Translation: He's peed off many.
  • Jan 17 a  Ever hear people say, I wouldn't vote for him if he was the last.......
  • Jan 17 a If Blankenship runs and Calhoun doesn't support him 100%, even though Clay has fewer voters in the 33rd District, we could end up with a Delegate. Our candidate has to reside in Clay County's A or B districts to run for the Delegate spot.   Who could we get??????
  • Jan 17 a Don't say Jim Dawson. He's already signed up for the local School Board race.
  • Jan 17 a Who has name recognition and a mouth? Someone who can talk in public?
  • Jan 17 a The name Fran King comes to mind. Maybe with a little encuragement.....
  • Jan 16 a Man it's cold out there! Beagles are carrying battery cables to jump start rabbits!
  • Jan 16 a  Our Top Badge's Tahoe is back in service after replacing the shot out glass. Many in the county are still giggling about Saturday's Holcomb Hill incident. Randy says the guy was in the back seat and handcuffed behind the back.
  • Jan 16 a Last night the Lady Panther's put it all over Calhoun County. That's two wins this year for the Lady Panthers.
  • Jan16 a For the politicos out there, here's the link to to the Sec of State's site showing all candidates for district wide office.
  • Jan 16 a There's good reason why you don't have any jingle in your pocket. Inflation up, gasoline up, and the economy in a tail spin.
  • Jan 16 a  We've got a couple interesting things going on this Saturday
  • Jan 16 a Most of us know the folly of W's oil war. That's nasty politcs. A walk showing support for the troops is different. That's what's going on Saturday at noon. See EVENTS page
  • Jan 16 a Nothing to do Saturday after the walk?  Over at the high school the Apple Festival folks are holding a talent search for entertainers for this year's Festival. If you have a talent, comic, singer, magician or other, show up Saturday at 5pm. See EVENTS page. The show starts at 6. Soft seats, good heater, and great talent!
  • Jan16 a  Time to email over the stuff you want in this Friday's Communicator. Deadline is Thursday around noon.
  • Jan 15 p  Yes tonight's Lady Panther vs Calhoun game is still on. Put on your long underwear and come out and support the home team. WYAP will also be broadcasting play by play.
  • Jan 15 p Around the county people are scratching their heads over why schools were closed today. There was about a skiff of snow and temps were in the low 20s. Main roads were near dry and clean by 8 am this morning
  • Jan 15 p We've got a new, well not so new, candidate running for the School Board.
  • Jan 15 p Retired from school super and out to pasture from the state senate, Jim Dawson signed up today to run for the school board. More my file this week.
  • Jan15 p  That makes incumbent Gene King, Morgy Triplett, RB Legg and Jim Dawson running for two seats. Someone may get bumped. Word on the   street has it the administration wants Gene King out of office.
  • Jan 15 p With long time State Senator Shirley Love out of the running, Fayette County Sheriff Bill Laird thrown his hat in the ring. Laird may have the support of Fayette County but there's plenty of wiggle room from Nicholas, Clay and Webster Counties to support other office seekers.
  • Jan 15 p As of last night, Bill Stemple has not signed up for the House of Delegates
  • Jan 15 8am  There's about 2 inches of snow on the ground and temps are around 20 degrees. Clay County Schools will be closed today.
  • Jan 15 a The first three or so "snow days" called off have to be made up in June. Today's time off is the last day that has to be made up this year. Kids will be in class until June 9th. Any more snow days this year are free vacation time for all.
  • Jan 15 5:45 am  Clay County Schools are on a TWO HOUR DELAY. Go back to bed!
  • Jan 14 LATE pm  Around noon, David Pierson (School Board member) signed up for the County Commission race. That makes Dave, Mike and Pete on the Demorat ticket this time around.
  • Jan 14 LATE PM So far, we have no Republicrats running for office.
  • Jan 14 LATE pm  State code mandates that once a School Boardster signs up for another office, they are automatically off the Board. Poof, gone!
  • Jan 14 LATE pm Between  now and the next School Board meeting, most likely, a Special meeting will be convened to appoint Dave Pierson's replacement.
  • Jan 14 LATE pm  Incumbent RB Legg signed up this morning and new comer Morgy Triplett have tossed their hats in the school land ring.
  • Jan 14 a Election season is here. Today is the first day to sign up to run for office. Stepping up to the plate....     In the County Commission race, incumbent Peter Triplett has a challenger, Mike Pierson
  • Jan 14 a Other incumbents, Mike King, Jeff Boggs, Teresa Lane, and Randy Holcomb have also signed up for another 4 years. Not so for Prosecutor Jim Samples.
  • Jan 14 a Last day to sign up is Jan 26th.
  • Jan 14 a On the rumors of  Senator Shirley Love not running again, TRUE
  • Jan 14 a Mr Love issued a press release this morning at 9 am. We'll get it on the ADVISORY page shortly.
  • Jan 13 a Herman Ray Murphy, 72, of Dille, see OBITUARY page
  • Jan 13 a Abner Jackson Canter, 71, of Widen, see OBITUARY page
  • Jan 13 a From the email bag: "Seeking historical information on Eakle, WV in Clay Co.  Interested in what was there, who founded, etc.  Any info greatly appreciated.  Email hike4morelife@yahoo.com  Thanks!" I am doing some historical research and just wondering if anyone still knows about this place.
  • Jan 13 a What  a week !
  • Jan 13 a  Clay Co PSD decided they have so much work to do, they needed a third office worker. The hire was already on the job by Tuesday's public meeting.
  • Jan 13 a Over at High Street Apartments, a lady decided her neighbors furniture was nicer than hers. Knocking down  the neighbors door, she swipes big stuff right down to the laundry detergent. Roberta Mullins was arrested for the caper. The neighbor decided High Street wasn't the place for her and moved out.
  • Jan 13 a During the Wed Housing Authority meeting, the site manager said she planned to padlock out another tenant and her live-in boy friend. She said signed eviction orders from the Magistrate's office are in place but have failed to keep  the very destructive lad from the public housing project. According to the Manager, she also has eviction orders for the girl friend.
  • Jan 13  a  WRONG  There are NO eviction orders in the Magistrate system for the girlfriend nor is there ANY paperwork in the works to remove the sweetie. As for keeping the boyfriend out (our guess David Hanshaw), with an eviction order in place,  trespassing laws should make for an easy arrest. Since Hanshaw is already on probation, one arrest, and off to the slammer he may go. The Blogs are wrong in their postings!
  • Jan 13 a    County Commission met last Wed. There they gave the go ahead for the new Vet Memorial in front of the old Courthouse. The read into the minutes decree had some caveats. Stuff like: You can't do anything until you raise the $300,000.00 and even then the VFW has to come back to the CCC for an OK to build or cut down the beautiful evergreens.   Nice wording CCC
  • Jan 13 a Thursday night Clay Roane PSD made public, they have a teeny weeny wa wa leak somewhere in their system. They don't know where.  Amounting to 100s of 1000s of gallons, the PSD decided it was cheaper to make water at their own plant (70 gallons/minute) instead of buying water from the wholesaler, the Town of Clay. The PSD budgeted around $4000 a month for purchased wa wa . In August they bought $8073.41; Sept 9,309.52; Oct 7815.35; Nov $8389.59; and Dec $7516.75.  Needless to say their budget is shot for this fiscal year.
  • Jan 13 a  All H broke lose Sat when David Lee Ramsey managed to get lose from our Top Badge and drive off in Randy's almost new Chevy Tahoe. In the end, Ramsey was caught a few miles up the road, but only after Holcomb managed to blast away his own shiny black vehicle. Windshield, side window, protector divider and rear end full of holes plus a tire!
  • Jan 13 a Saturday night a call in for a ambulance, possible heart attack. At 12:26 am the response: Call Roane County, there's NO crew on call.
  • Jan 13 a  And Yes, the brand new ambulance that was wrecked (twice), it's fixed and back ready for duty. In the county of high unemployment, Ambulance Director Bev King can't find anyone to work. Hmmm....
  • Jan 13 a Monday evening during the school board meeting, Gene King made public a county pick up truck  getting bashed up by a school bus. The ambulance was rushed into the body shop for quick repairs. Seems we have an aversion to letting the public know why county insurance rates are skyrocketing.
  • Jan 13 a With the filing window for running for office opening Monday morning, we heard rumors of change. The Norhern end of Clayberry is served by Calhoun Count native Delegate Bill Stemple. 60+ Stemple appears to be changing course and has decided to run for the Calhoun County Sheriff's slot. If that's the case, it looks like a retired school superintendent may  run for the Delegate position.
  • Jan 13 a  In other politico news, it appears long time State Senator Shirley Love may be retiring from the 11th Senatorial District which includes all of Clayberry. If that turns out to be the case, many will jump on the "I want to be Elected" band wagon including Clay County's very own aging, sagging retired school superintendent.
  • Jan 13 a Just another week in Clayberry.
  • Jan 12 Around 3:55 Sheriff Holcomb called Dispatch with a normal sounding request for driver's information. From dispatch, a David Lee Ramsey license revoked and an outstanding warrant from Ohio
  • Jan 12  3:58 from an out of breath Randy Holcomb: SHOTS SHOTS FIRED!!!! He's got my Tahoe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Jan 12 4p   Randy on radio calling for all law enforcement for assistance and: I don't know which direction he went.... he took it.... I'm in personal vehicle.  Units 683, 3, 4, 311 responding.
  • Jan 12   Blue Lights were seen and heard racing thru the Town of Clay.
  • Jan 12  4:01p  Someone on radio: HE'S GOING UP HOLCOMB HILL
  • Jan 12 4:02p  from fireman David Pierson on police band: All law enforcement, We got him! He's at top of Holcomb Hill!!.... Randy is requesting State Police Sergeant
  • Jan 12  Green Shirt Marshall Bailey to Randy: The Sergeant is at home, what you need. Randy: Shots fired Marshall.
  • Jan 12 4:06p   "Everything is  Secure"  call for tow truck made
  • Jan 12 4:08p   Bailey securing the scene at House's Market
  • Jan12 4:14p Bailey says he's there with one
  • Jan 12 4:15 p Someone: Do you have EMS coming? Response No
  • Jan 12 4:16   Tone went off for an ambulance
  • Jan 12 4:17p Unit 10 (Jack Brown) tells Randy that he's retrieved the "radio" and is in Houses Grocery Store.
  • Jan 12 4:26 p Randy Holcomb: What's the ETA on EMS? Response: I'm at Bickmore now
  • Jan 12 4:27p Ambulance on scene
  • Jan 12 4:28 p "Anybody hit?" asked twice.
  • Jan 12 4:29 p Randy told to read the guy his Miranda rights
  • Jan 12 4:29 p Finally a response on whether Randy shot the guy. From Bailey: No one was hit unless you count the Chevy Tahoe
  • Jan 12 4:30 p  As for getting a statement from Ramsey, Green Shirt Bailey: I'm betting  a statement isn't available... He's extremely Signal 10
  • Jan 12 Radio traffic slows down a little
  • Jan 12  4:42p  Sounds like everything is secure with Holcomb saying he had one eye witness.
  • Jan 12 4:42p As for the bad guy David Lee Ramsey: date of birth 11-24-71; 5'8"; blue eyes; 150 pounds; and address Ohio
  • Jan 12 5p  That will about do it for this edition of crime in ClayBerry
  • Jan 12 5p Sounds like Randy stopped a drunk driver at a local groocery store, was preparing to arrest him when the guy overtook Holcomb and took off in the brand new Chevy Tahoe. Within seconds David Pierson had Randy in his prviate vehicle (maybe) and in persuit. Somewhere in there, Randy blasted away at his own vehicle.
  • Jan 12 5p   Neither Randy nor Ramsey were shot.  Good news!
  • Jan 12 that's it clickers, for now at least
  • Jan 12 p It's quiet in Clay. Little chatter on the 911 scanner and even less activity on the streets of downtown Clay. It's dead. What ta do What ta do?
  • Jan 12 p How about a movie? Just found a site with full length current movies. Fresh stuff like the Legend and Bucket List. Easy to use , no ads, and free. Click here for the site.
  • Jan 12 p As a note, to keep the movie from jumping and stopping, let it buffer ( pause) for five minutes or so before viewing. Did we mention free?
  • Jan 11 p With the Legislature back in session,  Senator Shirley Love is providing weekly Updates. The latest is now posted on our ADVISORY page. Bet the teachers won't like his words this time around.
  • Jan11 p With the first day to file for office Monday, Jan 14th, this is the weekend to ponder. Will I, should I, run for public office? Already we're hearing, Delegate Bill Stemple (serves the Northern end of the county) will not run for district wide service but instead seek the Sheriff's position in Calhoun County.
  • Jan 11p Other rumors are circulating as to who will and won't run. If a Senator decides not to run, the 08 Election could be dandy. For that matter, if School Boardster Gene King decides not to run , we could have a great election cycle. With David Pierson said to be running for County Commission against Peter Triplett, it could be Oh Boy time as well.
  • Jan 11 a John King over at Two Run just set up his brand new puter. Welcome aboard Mr. King!
  • Jan 11 a The big telephone companies opened their doors to FBI CIA ICE agents and allowed the Feds to eaves drop on Americans without Court approved warrants. They came across as doing a service for America. Doing something good for the country. Patriotic and such.
  • Jan 11 a Seems the Feds don't pay their phone bills fast enough for the good samaritan Bell companies. The telecom corporations shut down the eaves dropping when the Feds didn't pay their bills. So much for doing something for the country out of the goodness of their corporate hearts!
  • Jan 11 a How's your budget? Things a little tighter than usual? Many of the nations top banks are now borrowing from mid east countries and worse. Here's the latest gazillion dollar bail outs.
  • Jan 11 a Experimental Yes but, A drug used for arthritis can reverse the symptoms of Alzheimer's "in minutes".
  • Jan 11 a Hear State Senator Shirley Love on WYAP Friday mornings at 9 am
  • Jan 11 a  A leaky spigot, that commode running a little,  a leaky faucet,  drip drip drip. As soon as that water bill goes up a little, you fix it. Right?
  • Jan 11 a Last night Clay Roane PSD held their monthly meeting. The PSD buys wholesale wa wa from the Town of Clay for much of their system and all of their customers over in Roane County. They usually pay around $4000 a month for the purchased wet stuff.      Last month they were billed $10,000 for the purchased water.
  • Jan 11 a During one 13 hour period, they lost 119,000 gallons.    They think they have a wittle bitty week somewhere!
  • Jan 11 a Solution: Instead of buying from the Town, they plan to start paying overtime and hire on part time water operators at their Procious Water Plant.   Now that'll fix the leak!
  • Jan 11 a Is it a new leak? Nope. During the Dec meeting they talked about a big leak  somewhere in their system.
  • Jan 11 a Clay Roane PSD also voted to start fluoridating their water. Fluoride occurs naturally in the water.  In some places there is so much fluoride occurring naturally, teeth are stained brown and elders have brittle bone fractures.
  • Jan 11 a When asked : How much fluoride is already in the water supply? No one had an answer.
  • Jan 11 a They plan to hook up the fluoridation system  right away and starting the chemicals ( chemical plant residue) as soon as possible.
  • Jan 10 a Clay Roane PSD meets tonight at 7pm in the CCC room.  The agenda is posted over on the ADVISORY page.
  • Jan 10 a Just got this in: I noticed the rates CDC is charging on the ADVISORY section of your website. What the person failed to mention, when stating they have always charged to ride because they get little money from the DOT is that they are also reimbursed from the Bureau of Senior Services. The reimbursement from the State is for people 60 years of age and older, and is funded under the Title IIIB program which comes from federal and lottery funds. They cannot charge any person 60 or older! It is a donation only.
  • Jan 10 a  To find out more, go to the Bureau of Senior Services. Also a good place to complain!
  • Jan 10 a  Yesterday during the County Commission meeting, Kookla Fran and Ollie gave the green light to the new Veteran's Memorial but with strings. Stuff like: You can't do ANYTHING until finals drawings are presented; you can't do anything until the needed $273,000 in the bank; and You can't start ANY kind of construction until you come back here for a last OK.
  • Jan 10 a   Our Southern border colony Clendenin  was dragged thru the Court system after using a radar gun  in the speed trap Town.  At one point they had nearly 2 dozen lawsuits against the tiny municipality. They lost each case and the settlement costed the Town bunches.   As for the using a radar gun , the Judge said nope, not according to state code. An appeal netted the same answer.
  • Jan 10 a  The way we understand it, small town Badges, under 1000 population, are not allowed to set up a speed trap using the radar gun. No were not a lawyers but we can read plain english.
  • Jan 10 a  Monday, Town of Clay Mayor/Chief of Police Jack Brown was seen trying out a radar gun.
  • Jan 10 a We asked him about it and  Top Badge Randy with both saying, Yelp! It's legal!!! Sure is!
  • Jan 10 a With all the stuff the municipality needs and with finances in the gutter, wouldn't a costly court battle be sad.  So sad!
  • Jan 10 a Someone call up Jack and straighten him out, please.
  • Jan 10 a  Tuesday night was a strange one over at High Street Apartments. Just before midnight, scanner listeners heard Miles Slack hauling a lady off to Central Regional Jail. Seems the tenant went to another  apartment, broke down the door,  and stole about everything in there for herself. How did she make room for all the new stolen stuff in such a tiny apartment? She threw all her old stuff out the door, over the rail,  and down where the cars park.
  • Jan 10 a Teacher comments on report cards:    I would not allow this student to breed.    Your son sets low personal standards and then consistently fails to achieve them.      When your daughter's IQ reaches 50, she should sell.    If this student were any stupider he'd have to be watered twice a week.      It's impossible to believe the sperm that created this child beat out 1,000,000 others       The wheel is turning but the hamster is definitely dead
  • Jan 9 p   Every three months or so someone starts or restarts another internet hoax. Now in circulation is that one about having to call the National Do Not Call list with your cell phone. If you don't, telemarketers by the bushel will start calling and on your dime.
  • Jan 9 p  Don't get excited clickers, it's a bunch of bunk. Here's the scoop from snopes.com.

  • Jan 8 p  The Town of Clay emailed last night and said they called or personally contacted each of their affected customers. Dwana added that it was the construction crew at the Dundon Bridge Ski Slope site that did the damage.

  • Jan 8 p Here in the county of little, about everybody is up for a job shuffle except the County and circuit clerk positions.
  • Jan 8 p In County Commission land Peter Triplett is up for public consensus. School Boardster Dave Pierson is most likely to run against Triplet with word on the street that another Pierson, Mike Pierson , may also throw his hat in the ring.
  • Jan 8 p No word on whether senior School Board member Gene King will run again. If  he wins, that'll make his  330th year in the school system.
  • Jan 8 p When The Communicator was accepting Merry Christmas ads for the Dec. edition, RB Legg on the School Board and Magistrate Mike King confirmed their plans to run again for office.

  • Jan 7 a  Clay Co PSD will hold their monthly meeting Tuesday afternoon. The normal start time is 4:30pm. • Jan 6 a The new year came in with snow, sleet, ice and temps well down in the single digits. The Christmas break lasted a couple more days than expected with schools closed Wed., Thursday and a two hour delay on Friday. Clayberry goes crazy when it snows. We get out on the roads and head for rental movies, bread, smokes, milk, and beer. Natural gas supplies or at least crude in the lines caused outages here and there.
  • Jan 6 a  We celebrated a new year, a new start, Monday night. Kids came to the WYAP to watch the Clayberry Ball smash to the ground. Few DUIs and party going arrests were heard on scanners.
  • Jan 6 a During Wed's CCC organizational meeting, Fran King was elected the new Prez. Meeting days and times will remain the same as 07. , 2nd and 4th Wed's of the month at 10 am.
  • Jan 6 a 12 months ago Tuesday County Commissioner Ole What's his Name took his seat on the CCC. His campaign hype touted his grant writing abilities and millions in grant dollars coming to our county. Other than taking credit for the work of others, little came of his promises. It was a Yawn for Slinky.
  • Jan 6 a  All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.
  • Jan 6 a This first week of the new year proved little different from all the previous years when it comes to the Clay County Business Development Authority. Arguing. Debating the same issues over and over. People getting mad and quitting over following the law of the land. 12 years and counting and no new jobs, or businesses, or confidence in our eco/dev future. Raising a few eyebrows, the most recent audit revealed  neglect in matching up expenses with pay outs, no signed paper trails. After serving as BDA Prez for 6 months, Fran King resigned from the  position. She will remain on the BDA. Katherine Knotts got her shorts reaaal bunched up and resigned from her Secretary position.
  • Jan 6 a   National debates among the candidates were listened to Saturday night. Mostly rehashed BS, once again, you can't believe any of em.
  • Jan 6 a  During one of those exchanges, one candidate mentioned we ONLY lost 28 soldiers in Dec.
  • Jan 6 a Only?  Only 28?  How is that a good thing?
  • Jan 6 a   There have been 4,210 coalition deaths -- 3,904 Americans, two Australians, 174 Britons, 13 Bulgarians, one Czech, seven Danes, two Dutch, two Estonians, one Fijian, one Hungarian, 33 Italians, one Kazakh, one Korean, three Latvian, 22 Poles, three Romanians, five Salvadoran, four Slovaks, 11 Spaniards, two Thai and 18 Ukrainians -- in the war in Iraq as of January 4, 2008, according to a CNN count
  • Jan 6 a Recent polls show America is more interested in hearing about health care and the economy than the war. How sad. If Jack the Ripper was around and killed 28, we'd be outraged. 28 soldiers, we  pay little interest at the least and show pride in such a low number. How sad.
  • Jan 5 p From the email bag:  I would like to announce the birth of my beautiful baby girl Olivia Inez Adkins. She was born at Summersville Memorial Hospital on December

  • 7, 2007 at 12:36 am. She weighed 5lbs 10 ozs and was 18 inches long. She is the daughter of Samantha Adkins and David Stone of Lizemore and Patrick Blankenship of

  • Jan 5 p Last night the CCHS Panthers went down in flames as Braxton County put a big time thumping on em.
  • Jan5 p This afternoon around 3:45 the Lady Panthers take on Tolsia in home court action. It's not snowing, icing, sleeting and the temps are warm. Get out and support our athletics this afternoon. Go Clay!
  • Jan 5 p Received a couple comments on our Friday afternoon post on the BDA meeting, the part about a dog with worms and chasing in circles..... Some think the post was a little too tough.
  • Jan 5 p In reply, BOLOGNA!!!  The meeting was nuts for two hours. For someone to get all bunched up and quit over questions about the meeting agenda  being faulty, that's even worse.
  • Jan 5 p   Communicator comes out Monday afternoon chucked full of everything that makes the Great Nation of Clay so special.
  • Jan 4 p  Larry Wayne Bird, 42,  see OBITUARY page
  • Jan 4 p  Monroe James "Jim" Holcomb, 97, of Indore, see OBITUARY page
  • Jan 4 p The Communicator has been delayed until Monday afternoon. This Wed Thur and Friday gas service has been off and on at the office making for blue fingers  and cold toesies. Our lead story will be the 2008 Person of the Year along with the annual YEar in Review and a detailed time line on the Clay Development Corp lawsuit
  • Jan 4 p And now the Main Event. Last night the Business Development Authority met for two hours. Decision wise, they accomplished nothing.
  • Jan 4 p Lets see now, Fran King quit as BDA Chair; as for that new metal building for the old Filcon site, after 40 minutes of chatter, that was put on hold again; forming that new eco/dev group free from County Commission control? that too ended up in a pile on the floor; and, during discussion of an upcoming organizational huddle with the CCC and CAEZ, many, most, BDA members  showed little interest with most saying they would be unable to attend the middle of the day, middle of the month summit.
  • Jan 4 p After 2 hours of nothing, one little bald headed guy asked about the meeting agenda not being posted as required by law. Oh Man, Katherine Knotts (that's the lady that is suppose to post agendas) got her shorts all bunched up, ALLL bunched up, and said she was quitting her position (Sec) on the BDA because no one was helping her with getting the agendas out on time.
  • Jan 4 p After the meeting, senior BDA member Glada Lanham told Katherine Knotts: Don't let him run you off!!!!!!!!!!!!  We've lived here longer than him!!!!!!
  • Jan 4 p  Ever have a dog with worms? You know, bad worms?  When the worms get bad enough, that's about the time dogs start running in circles biteing & chasing their hind ends.  Dogs spinning in circles reminds many of the BDA.
  • Jan 4 a  Clay County Schools will be on a  2 hour delay Friday. Very Chilly!

  • Jan2 LATE p  The snows still coming down and the roads are treacherous. Hill tops accumulations upwards of 7 inches so far with slated for tonight.
  • Jan 2 p Man it was chilly this morning. 16 degrees at 8 am. The State Road crews worked much of the evening but still, the roads were slippery and ice covered. For that matter, they're still treacherous as of noon time.
  • Jan 2 p  Clay County's Business Development Authority (BDA) is suppose to meet the first Thursday of each month, IE  tomorrow. They're suppose to have the meeting agenda  up for public inspection three days in advance not counting holidays and weekends.
  • Jan 2 p As of this morning, no meeting agenda! Bad Fran Bad Girl!
  • Jan 2 p  Deadline for this Friday's Communicator is Thursday at high noon. Email your stuff ASAP.
  • Jan 2 a  6:28am  Clay County Schools are Closed today.
  • Jan 2 a The Christmas break just got a little longer.
  • Jan 2 a CLAY COUNTY SCHOOLS ARE ONE A TWO HOUR DELAY  Sleep In Kids
  • Jan 2 a  The announcement was made around 10:40pm last night. Unfortunately, about that same time the DSL service went kaput. Sorry for the slowness in posting
  • Jan 2 a  Just before dark Tuesday the snow, those big flakes started to fall. State Road crews were heard on the scanner  salting main roads. One poor driver went without a heater in his truck. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr...
  • Jan 2 a  County Commission meets today at 2pm to get organized for the next 12 months. Should take em a long time to accomplish that task.
  • Jan 2 a Last night the CAEZ tried to hold their monthly Board meeting. Didn't happen, no decisions due to no quorum.
  • Jan 1 a And it's here. Seems like just year or so ago we were all talking about the end of the internet and computers blowing up with the new century coming.
  • Jan 1 a As the new year came so did high winds and the threat of snow. Today's the last day off for the kids and school system. As soon as the weather casters started mentioning the S word, kids were thinking, maybe another day off school.  1 to 3 inches of the white stuff expected and chilly temps. Keep wishing kids
  • Jan 1 a Remember Sara Jane Moore? The lady that tried to gun down Gerald Ford with a 38 pistol? She was released from prison after serving 30+ years of a life sentence.
  • Jan 1 a Did you know: she was born on Feb. 15,1930, into a middle-class family in Charleston, W. Va., where a candy-store keeper remembers that both she and, a few years later, Charles Manson, another Charleston resident, shopped for sweets. Her family name was Kahn. Both Moore and Manson attended Stonewall Jackson High School on the West Side of the Capitol City.Moore was in the first graduating class.  Here's the full scoop on WV's own Ms Moore.

  • Jan 1 a West Virginia knows how to grow em!
  • Jan 1 a  Whistle thru your nose? Play the spoons? Tap dance? Barber Shop Quartet? Play the tuba?

  • Jan 1 a Clay County, the state for that matter, is loaded with talented musicians. Check out our EVENTS page for a chance to showcase your talents, and maybe a paying gig during this year's Big Apple in Sept.
