Dec 31 2007 Denzil M. Cogar, 52, of Bluffton, Ind., died Dec. 27, 2007. He was born in Clay County, W.Va., to the late Troy Denzel Cogar and Dora Rosella Nichols Cogar. He is survived by brothers, Danny Cogar of Smithers, W.Va., Mr. Ray Cogar (Debbie) of Dixie, W.Va.; and Mr. Terry Cogar (Felicia) of Dixie, W.Va.; and sisters, Mrs. Ron “Karen” Platt of Decatur, Ind., Mrs. Jerry “Ann” Platt of Huntington, Ind. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home, Bluffton, Ind., with Pastor Bud Abrams officiating. Dec 26 2007   Gerald Wayne Henry, 80, of Avon Lake, OH, entered into rest, Tuesday, December 25, 2007, at EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria, OH.  Born on April 21, 1927, in Clay County, he was the son of the late Clyde Wesleyan Henry and Sarah Margaret Boggs Henry. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann Henry; son, Donald Henry; brother, James Henry.  He worked as a chemist for Harshaw Chemical Company, Cleveland , was a World War II Army veteran, a graduate of Ohio State University, and a member of AMVETs.  Survivors include his sons, Robert Henry of Winter Haven, FL, David Henry of North Ridgeville, OH, and Alan Henry of Sheffield Lake, OH; daughter, Julie McCain of North Ridgeville, OH; 3 grandchildren, 3   great-grandchildren.  Funeral service will be 10 am Saturday, December 29, 2007, at Wilson-Shamblin-Smith Funeral Home, Clay. Burial will follow in the Boggs Cemetery, Big Otter, WV, with military graveside rites conducted by Clay VFW Post 4419.   Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 pm on Friday at the funeral home.

Dec 22 2007   Ryan Chaston Arthur, 18-month-old son of Sophie Samples of Campbells Creek and the late Ryan Douglas Arthur, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2007, in CAMC Women and Children's Hospital, Charleston, after a sudden illness. He was born June 18, 2006, in Charleston.  In addition to his mother, he is survived by his paternal grandparents, Terry Arthur of Gauley Bridge and Randy Arthur of Belva; paternal great-grandparents, Clem and Daisy Arthur of Belva and Paul and Nancy Lively of Brownsville; maternal grandparents, David Samples and Jennifer Salisbury of Procious and Teresa and Charley Armstead of Gassaway; and maternal great-grandparents, Bonnie Duffield of Elkhurst and Joe and Emogene Samples of Procious.  Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at the Pennington Funeral Home Chapel, Gauley Bridge, with the Rev. Dec 22 2007  Laura Annette McGlothlin, 38, of Clay, entered into rest Thursday, December 20, 2007, at  home. Born on May 9, 1969, in Millersburg, OH, she was the daughter of the late Early Jack McGlothlin, Sr. and Patricia Louise McGlothlin of Clay. In addition to her father, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Paula Jean McGlothlin. She was a participant in Special Olympics. Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her brothers, Early Jack McGlothlin, Jr. of Clay and Christopher George McGlothlin of Summersville; sisters, Terry Jo Stone of Clay, Cheryl Sizemore of Bentree, Amy Brown, Jennifer Kiser, and Mary McGlothlin, all of Summersville; 18 nieces and nephews. Graveside service will be 1 pm Friday, December 21, 2007, at the McGlothlin Family Cemetery, Sandfork Road, Harrison, with Minister Wayne Litton officiating. There will be no visitation. Dec 18 2007   Jane A. Reed, 82, of Amma, Roane County, died on December 16, 2007,   after a short illness, at the Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, WV.  A native West Virginian, she was born and raised in Salem, WV and attended Salem College.  She received her Bachelor’s degree from WVU and went on to teach in Michigan, Delaware, and Virginia.  She spent her lifetime learning and teaching others.  She was an avid reader and she enjoyed debating current events.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Freda Randolph Holbert, husband, Charles Reed and grandson, Kevin Whitteker.  She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Ana Gloria Reed of Porter Ranch, CA; her daughter and son-in-law, Kate and Bill Whitteker of Amma, WV, sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Earl Lawson of Morgantown, WV; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.  Mrs. Reed has donated her body to the WVU School of Medicine.  There will not be a funeral; however, a memorial service is planned for next spring.  Mrs. Reed’s family would like to thank the nursing staff at CAMC’s Memorial Division for the great care they provided, and also the staff at Hubbard Hospice Care, for their compassion and skill.  In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that all donations be made to the We Care Club, c/o Mr. Jerry Stover, Clay County High School, PO Box 729, Clay, WV, 25043.

Dec 17 2007    Alice Philistia Adkins Stephenson, 84, of Indore, entered into rest Sunday, December 16, 2007 at her home.  She was born February 22, 1923 in Clay Co. to the late Samuel and Fannie Adkins, in addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Martin Stephenson. Alice is survived by her daughter Anita Stephenson of Indore, daughter and son-in-law Elaine and “Buddy” Shull of Elkton, MD and their daughter Krystal Shull of Liberty, NY., sons and daughter-in-law; Samuel and Beulah Stephenson of Indore and their children Dara Stephenson and Companion Robert Deal of Indore, Lorissa Stewart and Companion B.J. Dec 14 2007   Goldia Ann Henderson, 82, of St. Albans died Monday, Dec. 11, 2007, at her home.  Born Aug. 10, 1925, in Clay County, she was a daughter of the late Ira and Bertie Doddrill Eagle. She was also preceded in death by her husband, A. Farrel “Slim” Henderson. Goldia was a former employee of St. Albans Cleaners and had served as a cook for many Clay County schools. She was a Baptist by faith.  Surviving are her daughters and their husbands, Sandra and Ray Knotts of French Creek and Connie and James Meeker of Charleston; her sisters, Dorothy Shrewsbury of Mentor, Ohio, and Iris Gumm of Charleston, S.C.; her brother, Robert “Bob” Eagle of Idaho; her grandchildren, Dr. Charlotte Knotts- Zides, a professor with Wofford College, Spartanburg, S.C., and her husband, Steve, Christopher Knotts, the principal of Morgantown Christian Academy, and his wife, Kimberly, and Ann Marie Henderson, a graduate of Marshall University and a current employee of Commercial Insurance Services; and her great-grandchildren, Justin and Charity Knotts. Dec 12 2007 Gene Paul Mollohan Age 76 Resident of Geneva, Ohio.  Passed away Monday, December 3, 2007 at Jefferson Health Care in Jefferson, Ohio. Born April 10, 1931 in, Servia, West Virginia to Fred and Radie (Sirk) Mollohan.   He married Lois McGlothlin on June 17, 1958 in Abbington, Virginia.  He worked as a Parts Salesman at Sanborn Auto Parts in Painesville and  at NAPA in Geneva. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War.  He enjoyed gardening and listening to bluegrass music. He is survived by his wife Lois Mollohan,Daughter Regina (Tom)Hamilton of Geneva, Brother Glen (Loretta) Mollohan of Flatwoods, WV 2 Sisters Ruby Mollohan and Mary Lou (Ed) Cowley of Warrior, AL.

Dec 11 2007  Gregory Derwin Fugate, 43, of Bickmore, entered into rest Saturday, December 8, 2007 at Montgomery General Hospital. Born on June 10, 1964 in Clay County, he was the son of the late Dencil and Hazel Fugate Williams, in addition to his parents he is preceded in death by two brothers Rodger L. Fugate and Dencil (Dink) Fugate. He is survived by his companion Darlene Shane Deems, sons Dakota, Jacob, Levi Fugate one daughter Courtney Fugate all of Bickmore, brothers Cletis Fugate of Bickmore, Craig Fugate of Falls View, Gallard Fugate of Big Otter and one sister Judy Smith of Maysel. Dec 11 2007   Mary Elizabeth “PUFF” Villa, 25, of Procious, died Friday, December 7, 2007, as the result of an automobile accident. Born on April 3, 1982, in Phoenix, Arizona, she was the daughter of Alice Villa and step-daughter of Teddy Runion of Procious. She was a clerk at Shafers Super Stop in Clendenin. She is survived by her mother, Alice Villa of Procious, step-father, Teddy Runion of Procious; father, Gerry Villa of Arizona; children, Tyler Ray Cummings and Alexis Kade Cummings of Procious; grandmothers, Louise Graham of Jodie and Mary Lou Villa of AZ; brothers, Christopher N. Dec 5 2007    Virgil Glen Samples, 94, of Procious, died December 1, 2007. Born on June 9, 1913, in Procious, he was the son of the late Samuel W. and Melinda Samples. He was a farmer, and a World War II Army veteran. Survivors include his sister, Pauline Riddle of Procious, and a host of nieces and nephews. At Virgil’s request his body was cremated. Dec 3 2007  Charles D. Short, 67, of St. Albans, died Saturday, December 1, 2007 at Thomas Memorial Hospital Charleston. Born December 16, 1939, in Clay County to the late Tracy and Beatrice Short. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Tracy Short and Donald Short, sisters Helen Davis and two infant sisters. Survivors include one brother Emil Short of Wallback, three sisters Mardine Pierson at Laurel Nursing Home, Hazel Tawney of Newton and Bonnie Seymoure of Spencer. Dec 2 2007   Christopher Matthew Mollohan, 35, of Duck, passed away on Nov. 29, 2007, at home from complications of a seizure. Matthew was a 1990 graduate of Braxton County High School. He survived an automobile accident in September of 2000 that nearly took his life. Matthew worked construction prior to his accident and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Fred and Mary Duffield; paternal grandfather, Charles Ivan Mollohan Sr.; and brother, Patrick Eugene Mollohan. He is survived by his children, Chelsie Browning, 16, of Birch River and Christopher Daniel Mollohan, 6, of Maysel; parents, Clark and Fannie Duffield Mollohan of Duck; sister, Pamela Shafer of Rosedale; brothers, Michael and Jeffery Mollohan, both of Duck; paternal grandmother, Elsie Mollohan of Duck; nephews, Gregory and Patrick; and niece, Brooke. Nov 30 2007 Mary Marie Gray, 79, of Lizemores, entered into rest Friday, November 29, 2007, at Montgomery General Hospital. Born on Feb. 9, 1928, in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Rosie Boggs. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert “Deb” Gray, daughter, Mary Virginia Gray, three grandchildren, Tanya, Heath and Scott; 2 brothers and 1 sister. She was retired from Elmo Nichols Department Store in Lizemores, a member of the Lizemore Church of the Nazarene and a member of the VFW Post 4419 Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Delbert Gray, Jr. of Wilmington, IL, Dennis and Shirley Gray of Lizemores; daughters and sons- in-law, Brenda and Tyrus Stone of Indore, Carolyn and Allen Norris of New Ross, IN; grandchildren, Belinda, Gretchen, Pamela, Starla, Richard, Jeremy and Stacy; great- grandchildren, Colton, Katherine, Allison, Brian, Nicholas and Hannah Rose; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Nov  28 2007  Hilda Marcine Mullins, 69, of Mount Sterling, Ohio, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007, at OSU Medical Center, Columbus, Ohio, after a long illness.  She was the daughter of the late Cecil and Ruby Mitchell Vaughan. She was a member of Cold Springs Gospel Tabernacle, Upper Falling Rock. She is survived by her husband, Clyde J. Mullins; son, Richard C. Mullins of Washington Court House, Ohio; daughter, Janet L. Fleming of Lorain, Ohio; sisters, Patsy Ruth Salzer of Cleveland, Ohio, and Barbara Ann Graham of Bomont. Nov 19 2007  Arley H. Nichols, 80, of Dixie, Fayette County, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007, at Ansted Center, Ansted. He was born Oct. 24, 1927, in Clay County, a son of the late Arnold Nichols and Gladys Barnett Nichols. He was a retired employee form Elkem Metals Company, Alloy, and was a member of Ida Missionary Baptist Church, Bentree. He was also preceded in death by stepmother, Agnes Bird Nichols; sisters, Maxine Elliott and Merline Bird; and brother, Maynard Nichols. He is survived by wife, Helen Matheney Nichols; daughters, Brenda Moore of Barboursville, Linda Hamm of Dixie, and Rebecca Valentine of Stanfield, N.C.; sons, Alan Nichols of Quincy, and Timothy Nichols of Oakboro, N.C.; sisters, Dorthalee Perdue of Dixie, and Freda Cogar of Dixie; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Nov 16 2007    Paul Bryan Baker, 44, of Chester, WV, entered into rest November 14, 2007, at his home. Born on February 13, 1963, he was the son of the late Joe Paul Baker and Bernice Stone Baker Weaver of Chester. In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Carl and Opal Baker and William and Donna Stone all of Lizemores, WV. Nov 16 2007  Earl Geary King, 72, of Valley Fork entered into rest November 16, 2007 at Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Ivydale. Born on June 12, 1935, in Clay County, he was the son of the late Robert Preston King and Mamie Ethel Woodrum King. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Garrett King and sister, Nina Faye King. He was owner and operator of King’s Grocery Store for over 30 years, former contract school bus driver for the Clay County Board of Education for 27years, and worked for Union Carbide Corporation at Institute. He was an avid WVU fan and active in local politics. Survivors include his wife, Norma King of Valley Fork; sons and daughters -in -law, Richard Earl and Marsha King of Valley Fork and Robert Edward and Edna King of   Maysel; daughters and sons -in -law, Teresa Dawn and Barry Casto of Valley Fork and Tammy Lynn and Carl Cogar of Pinch; brothers, O. Gene King of Clay and Jerry King of Spencer; sisters, Irene Hardman of St. Albans, Ivy Wells of Barracksville, WV, Agnes Beckett of Amma, and Audrey Oxley of Pigeon; grandchildren, Joshua King and his wife, Rebecca, Jacob King and his wife, Casey, Andrea King, Jared “Cody“ Casto, and step-grandchildren, Christian Elliott and her husband, Justin, Regina Legg, Jacob Cogar, and Kaysie Cogar. Nov 13 2007    Maysel Gladys Murphy of South Charleston passed away Monday, November 12, 2007, at Hubbard Hospice House. Born in Clay on February 12, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Ada Boggs Schoolcraft. She was a charter member of Holley Memorial Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Russell James Murphy; daughter, Sharon Faith Johnson; and brother, Buster Boggs. Maysel is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Mitchell Hudson of South Charleston; sons and daughters-in-law, Russell J. and Connie Murphy of Dix, Ill., and Robert B. and Joyce Murphy of Ozark, Ala.; brothers, William S. Nov 11 2007   Mona Lou Swift, 78, of Ivydale, previously of Lorain, OH, entered into rest Wednesday, November 7, 2007, at Braxton County Memorial Hospital.   Born on June 19, 1929, in Columbus, OH, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Clarice White. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Swift, her sister, Gloria White, and her granddaughter, Lizabeth Monna Swift.  She was a retired cook from Midview School District, attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Grafton, OH, and also attended Ivydale Methodist Church in Ivydale. She was a volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospice in Lorain, OH. She enjoyed baking, sewing, and was a cake decorator.  Survivors include her sons, Ronald (Karen) Swift of Euclid, OH, David Swift, address unknown, Kerry (Debbie) Swift of Ivydale, and Daniel Swift of Elyria, OH; daughter, Dara (Dan) Taylor of Elyria; brothers, Verl White, Albert White, Jr. and Robert White, all of Columbus, OH; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren. Nov 11 2007 Eunice “Budgie” Arnold, 94, of Elkview, formerly of Braxton and Clay Counties, died Nov. 8, 2007, at home. She was born April 3, 1913, at Upper Sleith, a daughter of the late William A. and Mandy Dobbins Ramsey. She was a homemaker and a dedicated Baptist by faith. She is survived by son, Charles Arnold and wife Doris of Elkview; granddaughter, Gail Arnold; and great-grandson, Alex Arnold, both of Elkview; and sister, Acel Meadows of Gassaway. She was preceded in death by three brothers; and five sisters.  The service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway, with Pastor George Rose officiating. Nov 11 2007  Beulah Frances Myers, 98, of Powellton, died Nov. 3, 2007, in Montgomery General Elderly Care.    She was born May 3, 1909, in Clay County, and was the daughter of the late Caroline and William Morris. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence O. Myers; and a daughter, Jo Ann Harford. She was a former employee in the food service department of West Virginia Tech. She was an avid quilter and belonged to the senior citizens of Montgomery. Mrs. Myers was a member of Elkridge Community Church. Surviving are sons, Lawrence O. Myers Jr. and Larry Allen Myers of Fort McCoy, Fla.; daughters, Pat Harford, Hazel Newcamp and Carolyn Buchanan of Ocala, Fla., Maxine Black of High Point, N.C., Kay Kozma of Pahrump, Nev. and Beverly McCausland of Macon, Ga.; 23 grandchildren; and 30 great- grandchildren.   The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at O'Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with the Rev. Roger Comer and the Rev. Sam Painter officiating. Nov 4 2007  Lydia “Lockie” Elliott Sanders, 77, of Point Pleasant, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington.  Lydia was a member of First Church of Nazarene of Point Pleasant, a member of the Mason County Retired Teachers Association, and was a retired schoolteacher, having taught in Mason and Clay Counties. She was born April 13, 1930, in Clay County to the late Earl Elliott and Clara Stone Elliott. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leo “Doc” Sanders; a granddaughter, Virginia Elyse Sanders; and two sisters, Bernice Morris and Mary Morris. Surviving are her children, Steve (Mollie) Sanders of Point Pleasant, Wanda (Cecil) Smith of Point Pleasant, Wayne (Pat) Sanders of Point Pleasant, Robert (Connie) Sanders of Southside, Julia (Bob) Messick of Teays Valley, and James (Lora) Sanders of South Point, Ohio; a sister, Louise Moore of Bentree; two brothers, Bill Elliott of Belva, and Walter Elliott of Lizemores; 13 grandchildren, Brandi, Mariah, Brook, Erin, Stephen, Zachary, Trenton, Ryan, Jordan, Cade, Landon, Madeline, and Grant; and three great-grandchildren. Nov 4 2007   Jacqueline Shamblin, 46, of Wallback, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2007, at Big Springs.  She was born May 28, 1961, in Spencer, the daughter of Effie Summerfield Lockney of Big Springs and the late Jackie Perrine. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Robert Lockney.  Jacqueline was a certified nurse's aide. She was formerly employed by the Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Ivydale, and Meadow brook Acres Nursing Center, Charleston.  In addition to her mother, survivors include her husband, General T. Shamblin of Wallback; one daughter, Melissa Shamblin of Spencer; one son, Jeremy Shamblin of Corpus Christi, Texas; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Donald Norman of Big Springs; and six grandchildren.  A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, at John H. Morris, 97, of Adonijah Road, Lizemores, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, in CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston.   Born July 18, 1910, at Lizemores, she was the daughter of the late Willis and Nora Nichols Morris. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Esmond L. Morris, and sons, Norman, Edward, Dale and Merle Morris. She was a homemaker and a member of Laurel Fork Missionary Baptist Church, Lizemores. She is survived by her daughters, Marie Johnston of Glen, Janet Fisk of Polk, Ohio, and Doris Summers and Evelyn Mitchell, both of Lizemores; and a son, Ralph Morris of Lizemores. Nov 1 2007   Kenneth W Taylor, 68, diedat his residence Thursday Oct 11 2007 following a respiratory illness. He was born July 7, 1939 in Bickmore West Virginia to Freda Neal and Jewel Holly (Jack) Taylor. A 1957 graduate of Clay County High School in West Virginia, he was also a 1979 graduate of Lincoln Trail College. He served 16 years in the U.S. Army and worked at Crane Naval Station as a civilian employee. He proceed to work as a government contractor for EG&G, officially retiring in 2006. He was a devoted husband of 43 years to his wife, Eva Maria (Holcomb), whom he married Dec 2 1964. He was a loving father of three daughters, Mrs Vance (Angela) Kerns of Bedford, Maj. Kevin (Sandra) Rhodes of Alexandria, Va., and Mrs Kevin (Lisa) Cox of Washington. He had four beautiful grand children.    He is preceeded ind eath by his parents and a sister, Nadine Mae Shelton. Surviving are his wife, daughters, grand children and three brothers, Calvin Taylor of Lincoln Park, Mich., Homer Taylor of Flint Mich., and Mike Taylor of Clay WV, and a sister, Iris Ann Estep of Fayetteville,WV. He was born on February 21, 1938, at Dille, W.Va., and was a son of the late Lorenza R. and Velma Frame Carte. Born on August 24, 1932, in Clay, WV, he was the son of Marion and Lydia Triplett Salisbury. On October 5, 1956, he married Mavis Lorrene Holcomb and she preceded him in death on October 15, 2002. Born in Charleston, WV, on March 25, 1987, he was the son of Homer Graham Jr. and Linda Walker Graham. He was a student at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC, and a member of the NC National Guard, B BTRY 1/113th of Monroe. He was a graduate of Sun Valley High School in 2005. Oct 23 2007   Mr. Delmas Leon “Butch” Butcher, 58, of Cross Lanes went home to be with the Lord Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007, after a short illness.  He was a Vietnam veteran with many medals as he served two terms in the war. He was born in Clay County to the late Samuel and Mabel Butcher. He is also preceded in death by his son, Brian Lee Butcher and brothers, Carl and Gary Butcher. He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda S. Butcher whom he nicknamed his “Ralfy.” Also surviving are his children, Charlotte Woods of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Diana Williams of Cross Lanes, his baby girl, Kimberly White of Cross Lanes, and Sheena Butcher of Cleveland, Ohio; two sons-in-law, Jereme White whom was considered as a son to Butch of Cross Lanes and Bill Woods of South Carolina. He is also survived by six granddaughters, four grandsons and a grandchild on the way that he was so excited about. He is survived by his brother, Terry Butcher of Ohio, and sisters Dalores and Rosetta, both of Ohio, and Betty of Sutton. Of his four grandsons he holds a special place for the oldest, Matthew X. Close or “Dobe” as he called him whom he has raised since birth. Butch was a wonderful husband and father. He loved being a grandpa and gave his grandbabies nicknames as soon as they came into this world. He was a great friend to many, as he never met a stranger. Everyone knows he loved to joke around and have a good time. We love and miss you DADDY. You are gone but not forgotten and we will see you again!  A tribute to the life of Butch will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.   Jerry graduated from Clay County High School and went on to WVU were earned a Bachelors degree. He then attended the University of Florida, graduating with a PHD in Physical Chemistry. He was employed with General Motors as a Research Scientist, and was a manager for the GM Technical Freedom Car Program. Oct 18 2007   Calvin Velt King, Sr., went to be with his Lord on the 17th day of October, 2007, after a short illness. He was born on June 21, 1917, in Wallback, Clay County, West Virginia. He was the son of Ralph Woodford King and Clara Belle Rogers King. In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by his sister, Lona Rogers of Wallback, West Virginia, and by his grandson, Charles Curtis King. He retired from E.I. DuPont of Belle, West Virginia, after 37 years of service as an operator at the plant. He was also a retired Magistrate of Clay County, West Virginia.  He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church of Wallback, West Virginia. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite of Charleston, West Virginia and Beni Kedem Shrine Temple of Charleston, West Virginia. He was a Past Master of Chelyan Lodge No. 158 and Clay County Lodge No. 97.  He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marie Boggs King of Clay; sons, Calvin Velt King, Jr. and wife, Anna, of Singapore; Wayne King and wife, Sandra Ann, of Wallback; grandchildren, Terri Elizabeth King, Christopher Wayne King and wife, Jennifer Lynn, Rita King, Dianna King, and Starkey King; and 4 great-grandchildren.  Funeral service will be l:00 P.M. Oct 18 2007 Dorothy M. McCracken, 98, of O'Brion, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, at Laurel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Big Otter, to join her husband of 58 years, Preston McCracken.    She was born Dec. 24, 1908, at Servia, the first-born child of the late Lily Boggs Mollohan and Nathan Curtis Mollohan. She was also preceded in death by two sons, James Martin and Sherman Curtis McCracken; five granddaughters, Dottie McCracken, Charlene McCracken, Joyce Leahy, Mary Ann McCracken and Mary Jo Green; two grandsons, James Darin Green and Ian Christian McCracken; two sisters, Edna Marie Leach and Eva Roselene Gumm; and five brothers, Charles Ivan, Dennis Overton, Marvin Arthur, Dorsey Roland and James Martin Mollohan.   Dorothy is survived by eight sons, Donley (Beulah) of Cleveland, Ohio, Murray (Eleanor) of Long Beach, Calif., Byrne (Leona) of Collins, Ohio, Steve of Craigsville, Tom of Sandusky, Ohio, Norman (Blanch) and Arnold (Charlotte) both of O'Brion; five daughters, Margaret Moore and Betty Robinson, both of Duck, Mary Lou Green of Akron, Ohio, Hazel (Frank) Adkins of Red House, and Susan McCracken of South Charleston. Also surviving her is 49 grandchildren; 96 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Robb of Holliday, Fla., Imogene Carpenter of Marshallville, Ohio, and her twin brother, Ira Mollohan of Gassaway; two daughters-in-law, Betty McCracken of Sheffield Lake, Ohio, Sybil McCracken of Cleveland, Ohio, and a host of cousins and friends.   From an early age, Dorothy helped her Dad on the farm, at the sawmill, and in the garden. When she married Preston in December 1925, he was a timberman with two sawmills so her skills were an asset. She also cooked for his workers, sometimes using a gallon of buttermilk to make biscuits. She and Preston were a big part of the community; him providing jobs for local men to work his logging business and she helping when needed. In winter months, she quilted and crocheted, made clothing for her family; in the summer, she raised a big garden, canning lots of vegetables. She really loved growing beautiful flowers, not only during the summer, but all year. In the fall, some years we had grown sugar cane to make molasses and every year, we always made apple butter as we could consume up to one-half gallon a day.   She will be missed so much by her children and all of the grandchildren that she loved so much.     Family and friends may call at the Richard M. Oct 1 2007  Sandra K. Bullard Hackney, 66, of Belmont, formerly of Orma, died Sunday, September 30 at Carehaven of Pleasants after a short illness.   She was born June 23, 1941, at Elana, a daughter of the late Burl and Hazel Ellison Bullard.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Orville Hackney.   Sandy loved to attend and worship in church services.  She was a member of the Belmont Baptist Church.  She had been an active member of the Upper West Fork Senior Citizens organization.  She had worked at Goodwill Industries in Charleston from 1978 to 1982.  She loved her family and thoroughly enjoyed visiting them and her many friends.     Surviving relatives include two sisters and their husbands, Frances and Jack Tawney and Vicki and Rick Deweese, all of Belmont; a brother and his wife, John and Eloise Bullard of Chloe; four nephews, David Tawney, Jack Tawney II, Patrick Deweese, and Justin Deweese; four great nieces and five great nephews.  A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 3 in the John H. Sept 30 2007 Ronald William Conley, 48, of Nebo, died Friday, September 27, in the Emergency Department of CAMC-General Division, Charleston.  He was born August 28, 1959, in Roane County, a son of the late William George and Janice Elaine Drake Conley.  He was an employee of D&L Quality Homes at Nebo.  He was a member of the Nebo Baptist Church and was an Army veteran.  Survivors include his wife, Loretta Gwin Tanner Conley; one son, Dennis Conley of Nebo; two sisters, Debbie Ray of Clendenin and Cindy McPherson of Grantsville; and one brother, Tommy Conley, of Newton.  Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Nebo Baptist Church, followed by the funeral service at 3:00 p.m., with the Rev. Sept 21 2007  Georgia Lee Holcomb, 93, of Indore, departed this life and went home on September 19, 2007. Born on August 6, 1914, at Bickmore, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Wiley and Lydia Leora Legg Neal. Sept 16 2007  Wilbur D. “Wib” Samples, 95, of Bomont, passed away Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, at CAMC Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was a retired pipefitter for Goodyear. Wib was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Adkins Samples, four brothers, and a sister. Survived by a daughter, Nancy J. In addition to her father, she was also preceded in death by her husband, David Allen Harrison on April 20, 1979. She was a care giver for Clay Development and attended Hallsburg Baptist Church. In addition to her mother, she is survived by two children, Kimberly Sue Campbell of Ivydale and Gary Keith Hamric of El Paso, TX; her former husband, Robert Gary Hamrick of El Paso, TX; four sisters, Emogene Tanner of Lorain, OH, Dorothy Tanner of Rush Fork, WV, Cheryl Nichols of Wallback, WV, and Betty Klingensmith of Fayetteville, WV; one brother, Junior Nichols of Nebo; and her longtime companion, Brad Mollohan of Ivydale. Her family also included six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews, and countless friends.  Her selflessness and compassion cannot be measured in words, and the world is darker for the loss of her light. Sept 10 1007    Samuel Townsend, 77, of Procious, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 9, 2007 at CAMC Memorial Division. Born October 27, 1929 to the late Venner and Mary Townsend. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a infant son Jerry Lewis Townsend and a daughter Helen Townsend Welch.  Samuel was Coal Miner, he retired from the Dept of Highway in 1988. Sam was a devoted Christian and member of the Procious Community Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon and Song leader for many years. He was greatly loved and will be sadly missed by all that knew him. Survivors include his wife Lucy Townsend of Procious, sons Bob Townsend of Angier North Carolina, David Townsend, Tommy Townsend, Dana Townsend, Sambo Townsend all of Procious, Wayne Townsend of Clendenin, Steve Townsend of Bomont, daughters Ruth Bostic of Clendenin, Ruby Shamblin of McDavid FL., 20 grandchildren, And 18 great-grandchildren.  Funeral service will be held 10:00 A.M. Sept 10 2007    Malissa Kerr, 77, of Clay went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 8, 2007, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Nov. 30, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Frona Sams of Procious. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Frank Kerr Sr.; her brothers, George, Abraham and Adrian Sams; and her sister, Shirley Farmer. Malissa graduated from Clay County High School in 1949 and retired after 17 years from Kerr's Coin Laundry in 1979. Malissa and Frank enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. She loved her family and various pets and really enjoyed her flower garden and country music. Her favorite Bible verse was “Let not your heart be troubled.” Malissa is survived by her two children and their spouses, Jerry and Angie Crawford of Lorain, Ohio, and Carol and Steve Welfle of North Ridgeville, Ohio; her five stepchildren and their spouses, Frank Jr. and Connie Kerr of Clay, Kim Kerr of Fowler, Ohio, Fran and Mike Schafstall of Copperopolis, Calif., Joe and Ruth Ann Kerr of Jacksonville, Fla., and Linda Perry of Huntington; her loving dog, Fancy; sisters and their husbands, Nina and Denvil Brown and Nona and Don Norman; and brother-in-law, Carl Farmer, all of Elyria, Ohio; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Her memory will be cherished by many. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the many churches and people who have lifted Malissa up in prayer. Sept 10 2007  Lena Marie Laxton Bragg, 79, of Clay went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 8, 2007, following a short illness. She was a past matron of the Rebekah Lodge and a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Lena retired from the Clay County EMT after 12 years of service. She is survived by her husband, Eugene N. Bragg; daughter, Mary L. Miller of Lorain, Ohio; brothers, Ulysis Laxton of Georgia, William Laxton of Florida and Daniel Laxton of Ripley; grandchildren, Carmen Johnson of Lorain, Ohio, and Shannon Snyder of Ashland, Ohio; and great-grandchildren, Alexandria Aviles, Cassandra Aviles, Montanna Johnson, McKinnley Snyder, Truman Snyder and Kennedy Snyder. Sept 9 2007  Danny R. Jarvis, 51, of Left Hand, died Friday, September 7, 2007, in the Charleston Area Medical Center – Memorial Hospital, Charleston.  He was born June 2, 1956, at Left Hand, a son of Ellet and Evelyn Tallman Jarvis, Jr. of Left Hand.   In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Donald R. Jarvis of Left Hand; two nephews, Jamie and Eric Jarvis; one niece, Dawn Jarvis. A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, September 9 at 2:00 p.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Richard Webb officiating.  Burial will be in the Jarvis Cemetery, Left Hand.   Friends may call at the funeral home two hours before the service on Sunday.
 

Sept 8 2007  Walter “Bob” Pierson Jr., 70, a lifelong resident of Elkhurst, passed away on September 5, 2007, at CAMC General Hospital. He retired as a coalminer from Carbon Fuel. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Clendenin. Bob was a sergeant in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam Era, where he served three tours of duty and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. Bob loved fishing and was known for his generosity and gifts to many charities. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Pierson. He is survived by his children: daughter, Robin and husband, Tad Legg, of Wallback; stepsons, Rodney, Mitchell, and Ricky Jarvis; and stepdaughter, Yvonne Tyree. Also surviving are sisters, Wanda Longacre, Janet Hensley, Arlene Walker, Kathryn Davis and Melinda Pierson; brother, Frank Pierson; three grandchildren, Raven and Zoey Jarvis and Blake Moore; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Sept 8 2007  Roy Lee Ellis, 72, of Newton, passed away Wednesday, September 5, 2007, in the Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, after a short illness. Roy was born at Newton, February 20, 1935, a son of the late Lee and Nannie Nester Ellis.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Delano and Daniel; and an infant sister. Sept 1 2007   Chessie A. Woods, 84, of Dille passed away Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, in Summersville Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was born at Strickland, Clay County, on Sept. 29, 1922, was formerly employed by the Widen Grill and was a homemaker and a Baptist by faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene A. Woods; one son, Gary G. Woods; parents, Albert and Corneilia Sattler Woods; and two brothers, Otha “Bubby” Gill and Claudus Gill.   Chessie is survived by her children, Sheila Hamric of Heaters, Carla Williams of Dille, Clark Woods of Craigsville and Parker Woods of Dille; brothers, Ovalee Gill of Leon and Lloyd and Kendall Gill, both of Harrison County; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Born on November 26, 1941, in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Lewis Wesley and Rosalee Queen McClain. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death her first husband, Harry Johnson, and by two brothers, Charles McClain and Lewis Wesley McClain, Jr.  She was a homemaker, and was a member of Deepwater Baptist Church since l988. Aug 30 2007 Junior B. Ohse, 71, of Millersburg, and formerly of Maysel, W.Va., died Tuesday evening, Aug. 28, 2007, at Sunset View Nursing Home, Millersburg, following an extended illness.  Private services were held Wednesday at Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg, with Rev. Rick Trumbo officiating.  He was born July 22, 1936, in Clay County, W.Va., and was the son of Maxine Ohse. Junior worked many different jobs throughout his life; he was a jack of all trades. He loved playing cards, loved music and enjoyed writing his own songs. Surviving are children, Ronnie Brown and Dale Brown, both of New York, Heidi S. Chism and Lavonda Lynn Ohse, both of Newark, Teresa Bird and Starlett Miller, both of West Virginia, Katie Ohse of Virginia, Everett Ohse of West Virginia, Mark Wayne Ohse of Newark, Tina Bennett, Maxine Tanner, Delta Ramsey and Geri Summers, all of West Virginia; 36 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Opal Ellis of Barberton, Dennis Justice of Millersburg, Arlis Justice of Virginia Beach, Va., Robert Summers of Charleston, W.Va. and Cary Summers, Patsy Gawler, Linda Sue Graham and Carolyn Hesson, all of Millersburg. He was preceded in death by his mother and a daughter, Jarma Brown.
 

Aug 28 2007  Clark Tawney, 91, of Wallback went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 27, 2007, at Select Specialty Hospital, Charleston.   Born Nov. 28, 1915, at Newton, he was a son of the late Aaron and Almon Graham Tawney. Also preceding him in death were three brothers, Harry, Earnest and Garrison Tawney; and a sister, Mabel Tawney Rogers.   He was a member of Wallback United Methodist Church and was a veteran of World War II, having served as a medic in the United States Army. He was owner and operator of Tawney's Exxon, Wallback. He was an avid sportsman, especially foxhunting and watching his great-grandchildren participate in their sports programs. After retiring, he spent 28 winters in Florida with his wife, Beatrice. This past winter he spent the winter in Ravenswood with his wife, to be near his daughter, Bernice Jean Happney.   He was a devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.  He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Beatrice Summers Tawney; one daughter and her husband, Bernice Jean and Mark Happney of Ravenswood; two granddaughters and their husbands, Kimberly and Dean Murray of Ravenswood and Tammy and Greg Oxley of South Charleston; his great-grandchildren, Cory Murray, Luke Murray, Kayla Oxley and Nicholas Oxley; three brothers, Clement Tawney of Tariff, Jarrett “Buzz” Tawney of Spencer and Dan Tawney and wife, Hazel, of Newton; and three sisters, Mamie Haines of Newton, Florence Dalton of Vienna and Anna Desposito of Rio Rancho, N.M.   Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31, at Wallback United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ralph Keener officiating. Born on March 10, 1935, in Indore, he was the son of the late Herbert and Ida Keith. Aug 15 2007  Shirley Ann Holstein Wolcheck of Procious, WV died Sunday, August 5, 2007 in Florida following a long illness.  She was 62.  She was preceeded in death by her husband William Wolcheck, her father William Edman Holstein Sr, her mother Ruby Taylor Holstein, her brother, William E Holstein Jr.  She will be greatly missed by her survivors. Children:  Dewey E. Owsley Jr. of Procious, WV, Steven Owsley and wife Tina Charillua Owsley and grand daughter, Angela Owsley of Warren, Ohio, Angie Wolcheck and Donald and her children Dominick Wolcheck, William Wolcheck, Sydney Wolcheck and Casee Wolcheck of Arcadia, Florida.  She also left behind several brothers and sisters, Phyllis Ann Holstein Bowen, of Kentucky, Judy Gay Holstein Doughty of Procious, WV, Brenda Kay Holstein Thomas of Maysel, WV, James Evertt Holstein of Charleston, WV, Rickey Lee Holstein of Charleston, WV, Martin Holstein of Charleston, WV and her long time companion Jimmy Miller of Procious, WV.  She will be missed by countless nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.  She was retired from Wal Mart of Florida and West Virginia.  She was a kind, gentle, sophisticated woman who was loved by all who met her.  She will be deeply missed.

Teddie was born Feb. 24, 1934, at Madison, the son of the late Rev. Duard and Vinnie Marie King Jarrell. He was a retired employee from Cedar Coal Company at Chelyan and was a member of the UMWA. Aug 9 2007  Irene Augusta Hardway Lambert, 88, of Strange Creek and her husband, Victor Clyde Lambert left this life together as a result of a house fire on July 31, 2007. She was born March 9, 1919, at Gip, a daughter of the late James and Florence Santa Hardway. She was a homemaker and attended the Strange Creek Baptist Church and Strange Creek United Methodist Church. She is survived by children, Charlotte Campbell McKinney and husband, David, of Fayetteville, James Victor Lambert of Strange Creek, and Barbara June Lambert of Servia; grandchildren, Julie Ann Britt and husband, Kevin, Jeffrey Campbell and wife, Janelle, Jeremy Campbell and wife, Mengwei, April Lambert Wilkewitz and husband, Damon, Victor Ryan Lambert and Susan Faith Lambert; great-grandchildren, Jillian Britt, Jared Britt, Roger Dylan Britt, Rachel Wilkewitz, Samuel Wilkewitz and Jenna Campbell; and several nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by brothers, Casto, Gene, Carol and Brooks; sisters, Glennis, Nellie and Hallie; daughter-in-law, Ellen Rhodes Lambert; and son-in-law, Roger Campbell. Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Gassaway Baptist Church with Pastor Damon Wilkewitz officiating. Burial will be in the Strange Creek Cemetery. Aug 9 2007  Gaynel Duffield, 96, of Clay, entered into rest August 7, 2007, at her home. Born on February 14, 1911, in Flat Fork, WV, she was the daughter of the late John William and Elizabeth Wood. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husbands and two sons, Delmer White and Vohn Deems. She was a homemaker and a Baptist by faith. Survivors include her sons, Charles Ford Deems of Harrison, and Donvil Deems of Bickmore; daughters, Letha White Cantrell of Gassaway and Margie Payne of Gassaway; 18 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be 10 am Friday, August 10, 2007, at Wilson-Shamblin-Smith Funeral Home, Clay, with Minister Freddie Schoolcraft officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Cemetery, Flat Fork. Aug 7 2007  Mary E. Nugen, 90, of Spencer, formerly of Summersville, went home to be with her Lord, Monday, August 6, 2007.  She was born June 19, 1917, in Nicholas County, the daughter of the late Marshall and Mertie Bell Tyree.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Orval W. Nugen; a brother, Paul Tyree; and a sister, Ezelle Hypes. Mrs. Nugen was a homemaker and mother.  She was the bookkeeper at Citizens Chevrolet, Clay.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spencer.  Prior to moving to Spencer, she had been an active member and Sunday school teacher at the Summersville Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Clay.  Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Curt Sayre of Dayton, TN, Mary Ann and Woody Wilson of Spencer; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Linda Nugent of Mineral Wells; nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. A funeral service and celebration of her life will be Thursday, August 9 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Spencer with the Rev. Michael F. “Mike” King and the Rev. Dr. Curtis Sayre officiating.  Burial will be in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Summersville. Friends may call at the John H. Aug 5 2007  Euel Lee Wilmoth fell asleep in Jesus on Saturday, July 21, 2007, after a lengthy illness in Baptist Hospital, Pensacola, Fla., with his wife and family present.  Euel was born Aug. 26, 1927, at Widen, W.Va. He graduated from Clay County High School, Class of 1941 at the age of 13.   He was an Advent Christian Believer and loved to read and study the Bible.   He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lee and Gladys Wood Wilmoth, and a brother, Vernon C. Wilmoth, all of West Virginia.   He leaves behind his wife of 43 years, Amy, in Pensacola, Fla.; two brothers, Robert L. Wilmoth of Charleston, and Larry D. Wilmoth of Ivydale; two sisters, Phyllis Noe of Clay, and Mary Lou Baker of Okeechobee, Fla.; many nieces and nephews; and dear friends.    He was a decorated veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the Postal Service in New York, he moved to Pensacola, Fla., and was involved in real estate for the past 14 years.   He was laid to rest in the Barrancas National Military Cemetery, Pensacola, Fla., on July 24, 2007.   Memorials may be sent to Hospice of 6300 North David Highway, Pensacola, FL 32504.
 

August 3 2007   Joseph Albert Truman, 79, of Duck, formerly of Widen, died August 1, 2007, at CAMC-Memorial Division.  Born on December 24, 1927, in Clay County, he was the son of the late Ernest Holt Truman and Grace Seabolt. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Robert A. Truman, and two sisters, Lizzie Shingler and Clara Ann Johnson. He was a retired coal miner from Elk River Coal and Lumber Company, Widen, a World War II Army Air Corp veteran, a member of Widen Baptist Church, and Strange Creek Masonic Lodge.   Survivors include his sons, Carl Steven "Mo" Truman of Duck and Joseph Michael Truman of Wallback; brother, Okey “Doc” Truman of Duck; sisters, Olga Ratliff, Betty Cantrell and Joan Dawson, all of Duck; foster sister, Maysel McNeer of Charleston; grandchildren, Steven Michael Truman and Lindsay Ellen Davison; 3 great-grandchildren.   Graveside service will be 2 pm Sunday, August 5, 2007, at the Dawson Farm, Duck, with Ministers Joe Dawson and Joe Bob Truman officiating.   Friends may call from 6 to 9 pm on Saturday at Wilson-Shamblin-Smith Funeral Home, Clay.   On-line condolences may be sent to the family at www.carlwilsonfuneralhome.com.
