Dec 30 2006  Alva Cogar McGlothlin, 88, of Clay, entered in rest Friday, December 29, 2006 at CAMC Memorial Division. She was a member of Hartland Methodist Church and a member of the Rebekah Lodge. Alva was preceded in death by her husband Cecil McGlothlin, parents Charles and Minnie Lance Cogar, 5 brothers, and 2 sisters. She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law Ruth Ann and Peter Parsons of Clay, Karen Sigman of Charleston, grandchildren Melissa and Curtis Browning of Oceana, WV., Sara and Darren Argabright of Chas S.C., Emily Sigman, Charles and April Sigman, Jason and Brooke Sigman all of Charleston, WV., great grandchildren Joshua Argabright, Jacob Argabright, Anna Sigman, Baylee Sigman, Cole Sigman, and Jordan Smith. Dec 29 2006   Eloise Rose Carter, 77, of Cerritos, CA, passed away December 22, 2006 at Los Alamitos Medical Center in Los Alamitas, CA.  Mrs. Carter, formerly of Harrison, WV, was memorialized December 23, 2006 in Bellflower, CA, and interred at Artesia District Cemetery in Cerritos.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Hattie Rose of Harrison, and a brother, Wendell Rose of Massillon, OH.  She is survived by four daughters, Carolyn Chiappe of Henderson, Nv; Brenda Krauklis of Clay, WV; Shirley Ellerbee of Grand Junction, CO; and Debbie D'ymitro of San Bernardino, CA; a sister, Patty Ratterree of Bellflower; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren
 

Dec 25 2006   V. Madeleine Bell, 86, of Clay, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Ivydale, after a long illness.   Born on July 17,1920, in Lizemores, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Della Price Fitzwater. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, William Allen Bell; two sisters, Reba Legg of Bickmore and Mary Jean of Indore; three brothers, Donald Fitzwater of Fola, Haggard Fitzwater of Indore, and Bill Joe Fitzwater of Pensacola, FL.   She was a waitress at Bell?s Restaurant in Clay for many years, and was a member of Fola Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include her three children and their spouses, William "Bill" and Kay Bell of Charleston, Barbara and Larry Hubbard of Bickmore, Janandra and Glen Nelson of Maysel; five grandchildren, Etta Kenney, Sandra Hill, Larry Hubbard II, Crissy McQuillen and David Nelson; four great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth Fitzwater of Indore; sisters, Freda Maxine Smith of Sissonville and Wanda Morene Outten and husband, Allen, of Williamsburg, VA. Dec 19 2006 Kelly Dean Keith, 66, of Bickmore, died December 18, 2006, at his residence. Born on January 16, 1940, in Clay County, he was the son of the late Herbert James and Ida M. Keith. He was disabled and a member of Peoples Baptist Church.  Survivors include his brothers, Herbert  "Jackie" Keith of Big Otter and Jimmy R. Keith of Bickmore; sisters, Shelby Jarvis of Clay, Judy F. Dec 18 2006  Ruby “Jewel” Rogers, 53, of Dixie, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, December 16, 2006, after an extended illness.  Ruby was born January 25, 1953, in Montgomery. She was the daughter of the late Cecil H. O'Dell and Shirley Jones O'Dell of Dixie. She was a homemaker and a member of The Christian Church of Lizemore.   Surviving are her husband, Delbert Rogers; son, Harold Rogers and wife Lisa of Dixie; stepchildren, Delbert Lee “Bubba” Rogers of Burea, Ohio, and Debbie Buckosh of Vermillion, Ohio; brothers, Cecil H. O'Dell Jr. of Sandyville and Harless Elswick of Gauley Bridge; sisters, Charlotte Elberta Foreman of Pelican, La., Debbie Lewis of Louisiana, and Corene Ryder of Ansted; grandson, Hunter Rogers; step-grandchildren, Brooke and Bethaney Buckosh; uncles, Okey Jones and wife Evie of Elkview, Ralph O'Dell and wife, Mitzi, of Dixie, and Shirley G. O'Dell of Dixie; and special friends, Anna Bell Taylor, Kathy Nottingham, and Dortha West. Ruby left a lot of loving family and friends behind.   Besides her late father, Ruby was also preceded in death by her brother, King “Bucky” O'Dell; sister, Beverly O'Dell; grandmother, Ruby Mayflower Jones; and grandparents, Cecil and Myrtle O'Dell.   Services for Ruby will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Pennington Funeral Home Chapel, Gauley Bridge, with the Rev. Thurman E. Sizemore, the Rev. Jadie Morris, and the Rev. Kyle Rader officiating. Burial will follow at the Hill Cemetery at Belva.  Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home chapel.
 

Roy Arnold Keener, 76, of Kearns, Utah, formerly of Clay, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2006, at home after a long illness.  He served in the Air Force for eight years and retired as a truck driver after 25 years of service. In addition to his wife, Jackie, he is survived by his daughter, Karla Peterson-Paulson; son, Dale; mother, Beatrice Keener of Elkview; brothers, Rensford Jr. of Texas, Pete of Florida and Darrell of Belle; and sisters, Artie Melton of Elkview, Joan Perdew of Ohio, Brenda Beasley of South Carolina and Norma Robinson of Elkview. Graveside services were held Monday, Dec. 18, in Valley View Memorial Park in Utah. Information was provided by Hafer Funeral Home, Elkview.
 

Dec 14 2006   Roy Lee Tanner, 84, of Duck, died Tuesday, December 12, 2006. Born on October 5, 1922, in Cabin Creek, he was the son of the late Frank and Judy Tanner. He was a self-employed carpenter, and a World War II Army Veteran. He is survived by his wife, Frances June Tanner of Wallback; daughters, Wyma Sue Tanner of Belle, and Beverly Lynn Harrison of Wallback; 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be 11 am Friday, December 15, 2006, at the Hardman Cemetery, Nebo, with Minister Donald Dawson officiating. There will be no visitation. Dec 11 2006   Jimmy A. Cook, 72, of Ivydale, entered into rest Monday, December 11, 2006, at CAMC Memorial Division, Charleston. He was born in Widen, WV., to the late Wilbur and Dessie Cook, in addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Shirley Johnson. Jimmy was a retired coal miner and a member of the Ottervale Advent Christian Church. He is survived by his wife Virginia F. Cook of Ivydale, son Jimmie "Andy" Cook Jr. of Gassaway, Step-sons Kenny Wilmoth of Pinsion, TN., Glen Wilmoth of Creston, OH., Ronnie Wilmoth of Lodi, OH., Daughter Delesa Belknap of Gassaway, WV., brother Joe Cook of Brooklyn, OH., sister Mary Triplett of Summersville, WV., 4 grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren and 4 step-great-grandchildren. Dec 11 2006  Aaron Matthew Nottingham, 32, of Snow Camp, N.C., passed away December 7, 2006, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.   He enjoyed being a father and a husband. He was employed with Harris Teeter as a manager in the meat department. He was a Mason in Durham, N.C., with the Oak Grove Lodge No. 750. He was a big West Virginia University fan and an avid outdoorsman.  He is survived by his wife, April Ross Nottingham; daughter, Savannah Nottingham at home; parents, Ralph and Dianne Duffield Nottingham of Duck; sisters, Rhonda Nottingham of Jacksonville, N.C., and Rachael Nottingham of Greensboro, N.C., and Amanda Hughes and husband Charles of Charleston; and several nieces and nephews.   The service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 12, at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway, with the Rev. Allen Donaldson officiating. He was born August 23, 1935 to the late Frank and Alma Alice Legg, in addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Joann (Brown) Legg and a son Ricky Legg. Dec 4 2006 Arbutus B. Brady, 82, of Ovapa, died Saturday, December 2, 2006, at the home of her daughter. She was born May 18, 1924, to Earley and Dicy Park Brown. She was a Christian, a member of Bethel Methodist Church at Ovapa, WV., and a retired teacher from the Clay County Board of Education. During her career she taught at Robinson Fork, Blue Knob, Twistabout, Hagar, and Clay Elementary Schools. She also taught Sunday School for many years. She was an avid Bible scholar and loved everyone. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Brady and a brother, Glenvil Brown. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Deward K. Nov 29 am   William "Andy" Rogers of Wallback, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 26, 2006. Born on November 28, 1937, he was the son of the late Patrick and Tilda Rogers. He was disabled from Bendex Westinghouse and a farmer. He was a member of Rogers Fork Baptist Church. Mable Falls Arnold, 76, of Ivydale died Nov. 21, 2006, at Laurel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Big Otter, after a long illness.  She was born Aug. 14, 1930, at Uler and was the daughter of the late Eli William and Rosa Runion Falls. She was also preceded in death by her husband, W.G. Arnold, and sister, Ruth M. Falls  She is survived by her daughter, Leslie Sue Reynolds; brothers, Otto, Clarence, Willard, Roscoe, Ell Edward, Dean and Harold; sisters, Martha, Golda, Rosalee, Nina Mae, Audry and Nancy Falls; grandchildren, James and Sara; and stepson, Darius Arnold.  The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with the Rev. Nov 23  2006  Maisie Middleton Holcomb, 63 of Clay, died Tuesday, November 21, 2006 in Cleveland Ohio. She was born on July 20, 1943 in Bury St. Edmonds, England, to the late Walter and Esther Swan Middleton. She was a house wife and a mother. She was a member of the Lick Fork Baptist Church. Nov 22 2006  Darrell A. Samples, Sr. of Procious, passed away November 20, 2006, at his home after a long illness. Born on August 9, 1932, he was the son of Alta and the late Owen Samples of Bomont. He began working in the oil fields in 1950, first with Davis Oil Company in Bomont, and then with South Penn Oil Company at Walton, WV. Darrell retired from Pennzoil Oil Co. (old South Penn) in 1990 as Superintendent of Pennzoil?s central division in Spencer, WV. During his early years working in the oil fields, he moonlighted as a radio and television repairman after learning the trade via a correspondence course and pumped for other small oil companies in the evenings. Darrell was always a hard worker, a math whiz and very mechanically inclined. He could do complex math in his head and could figure out and fix about anything. The family always went to him for help repairing anything that broke. Darrell was an avid trout fisherman and loved to deer hunt and was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Walton, WV. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis J. Samples of Procious; mother, Alta Samples of Clendenin; sister, Loretta Moore of Clendenin; brother, Ronald Samples of Culloden; four children, Artie Samples, Debbie Walker, Sandy Rogers, all of Procious, and Melinda Romano of Maysel; 11 grandchildren and 7 great grand-children.  Graveside service will be held at l pm Friday, November 24, 2006, at Long Sam Samples Cemetery, Procious (located off Rt. 4 on Elkhurst Road, left on Samples Mountain Rd., top of hill) with Minister Roger Cummings officiating. Nov 21 2006  Maggie Mollohan Hall, 86, of Elmira died Nov. 20, 2006, at home.  Born May 26, 1920, in Clay County, she was a daughter of the late Donnie Edward and Dona Kathryn Tanner Mollohan.  She was a homemaker and a member of Hallburg Baptist Church. She was a member of Braxton County Senior Citizens where Maggie and her husband were crowned Valentine Queen and King in 2006.  She is survived by her husband, Denzil Hall; sons, Branty Mollohan, Don Curtis Mollohan and Arthur Mollohan, all of Elmira, and Bradley Mollohan of Big Otter; daughters, Carol Sue Robuck of Elmira and Elnora Young of Jacksonville, N.C.; brother, Milton Mollohan of Akron, Ohio; sisters, Amie Mollohan of Quick and Mary Freda See of Hallburg; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Marvin Mollohan, in 1986; daughter, Phyllis Jean Durham; brothers, Nelson Mollohan and Ira “Dude” Mollohan; and a sister, Hattie Mollohan.  Service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, at the Richard M. Nov 21 2006  Paul Durward Lockhart of Charleston passed away Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, after a long illness.   Durward was born July 21, 1922, in Clay, to the late Dr. Ralph Roy Lockhart and Myrtle Reed Lockhart. He graduated from Clay County High School and attended Marshall University and later served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for State Automobile Insurance Company for 36 years before retiring in 1984. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Clay County Bank from 1971 to 2003. He moved with his family to Charleston in 1966 and lived there until his death.  In addition to his parents, Durward was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Reba Legg Lockhart and a brother, James Kermit Lockhart. He is survived by five children, Connie Davis and husband, Dale, of Charleston, Jo Peters and her husband, Geoffrey, of Fairfax, Va., Dr. James D. Lockhart and his wife, Shirley, of New Haven, Dr. Cody Lockhart and his wife, Karen, of Beckley, and Dixie Kellmeyer and her husband, Fred, of Charleston; eight grandchildren, Christopher Davis and his wife, Kelli, of Alpharetta, Ga., Dr. Kara Peters of Durham, N.C., Shawn Peters of Jersey City, N.J., Heather Lloyd and her husband, J.T., of New Haven, Dr. Carrie Dillard and her husband, Dustin, of Hurricane, Amy Paxton of Charleston, Amanda Campbell and her husband, Dr. John Campbell, of Charleston, and Reed Lockhart and his wife, Sarah, of Morgantown. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Kate, Maggie and Jake Davis, Jacob and Josiah Lloyd, Luke and Katie Campbell, and Pierce Dillard.  Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, with the Rev. Lee Swor officiating. Burial will follow at Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney, where his grandsons and grandsons-in-law will serve as pallbearers. Kenneth Matthew Lambert, 86, of Newton, died Wednesday, November 15, 2006, at 1:30 p.m., in the CAMC-Memorial Hospital, Charleston, after an extended illness. Kenneth was a retired 25 year employee of Betsy Ross Foods and was a member of the Teamster’s Union, Local 348, both in Mogadore, OH.  He was a decorated Army veteran of World War II.  He was awarded five medals, including the Silver Star.  He served under the command Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower during the Battle of the Bulge. He also fought in other battles at Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Central Europe and the Ardennes.  Survivors include his wife, June A. Drake Lambert of Newton; son, David Lambert of Akron, OH; stepson, Jeffrey Hall of Copley, OH. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, November 18 at 1:00 p.m. in the Zion Hill Cemetery, Elana, with Pastor Ed Young officiating.  There will be no visitation.  John H. Nov 17 2006  Ella Ramsey Legg, 86, of Duck, entered into rest November 15, 2006, at home. Born on February 12, 1920, in Harrison, she was the daughter of the late S. V. Ramsey and Myrtle Woods Ramsey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Neal Legg; daughter, Jean Nottingham; brother, Carl Burton Ramsey; and sisters, Ruth Strickland, Jayne Gill and Tootie Rush. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her daughters; H. Judy Carte of Duck and June Goodwin of Inverness, FL; brother, Allen Ramsey of Roanoke, VA; sister, Alma Rush of Burnsville; 6 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Nov 10 2006   Mauddie Mae Triplett, 55, of Maysel, died November 10, 2006, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. Nov 3 2006  Emmett Arthur Miller, 76, of Cleveland, formerly of Clay County, died October 26, 2006. Born on July 30, 1930, in Clay County, he was the son of the late John and Lilly Miller. Nov 3 2006  Romey Nottingham, 64, of Indore, WV, entered into rest at his home November 1, 2006. Born on January 30, 1942, in Bickmore, WV, he was the son of the late William Andrew and Mary Mildred Nottingham. Oct 27 2006  Lucinda Jane B. Harris, 92, of 113 Winterhaven Ave., Princeton, died Thursday, October 26, 2006, at Harmony House Nursing Home in Lerona.  Born April 16, 1914 in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Patrick Henry and Carrie Rogers Butler. She was the retired language arts supervisor for the Clay County school system. Mrs. Harris was a member of Carr Memorial United Methodist Church. She attended Clay County schools and graduated from Clay County High School and Glenville State College with a B.S. degree in education. She received her Master's degree from Marshall University, West Virginia University and Fink University. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority, Retired Teachers Association and Valley Woman's Club and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. In addition to her parents, her husband, Edward Carroll Harris; one infant son; two sisters, Biddie Brannon and Mary Wayne; and one great-great-grandson, Shawn Dunn, preceded her in death.  Survivors include one daughter, Carol J. Fowler Thompson of Princeton; three grandchildren, Charles Edward Fowler and his wife, Debbie, Teresa Jane Kelley and her husband, Darren, and Leslie Ann Fowler; three great-grandchildren, Dillon Fowler, Sierra Kelley and Morgan Kelley; six great-great-grandchildren, Chad Holt, T.J. Oct 26 2006  Isaac Brooks Smith, 86, went to be with the Lord on October 25, 2006.  He was born February 11, 1920 in Akron, OH, a son of the late Rex H. and Nina May Hensley Smith.  His siblings include the late Dennis Smith and the late Charles Smith; also, Madlyn Backus of Accokeek, MD, Marion Harold and Steven Smith both of Newton.   He graduated from Spencer High School in 1938 and after completing his teaching certification at Glenville State College, Brooks began a teaching career at Trace Fork, a one room school, in Roane County.  Shortly, however, he was called to serve in the Army during World War II.  Upon returning from the Army, he continued to teach and completed a Master’s Degree and Administration Certification from West Virginia University.  Brooks became a principal and superintendent of schools in Clay County  (1952-1961) and a principal and superintendent of schools in Jackson County  (1961-1967).  He also served as superintendent of schools in Mason County (1967-1971) and then moved back to Jackson County in 1972 as director of school maintenance and retired in 1975. He married his lifetime companion, Katie Elizabeth Vineyard in 1940. Although they grew up within three miles of each other, they did not formally meet until they were at Glenville State College.  Brooks and Katie have three surviving children, Dr. Dennie Smith of College Station, TX, Dr. Randy Smith of Ripley, WV, and Dr. Nina Smith of Harrisonburg, VA; and two children deceased, Timothy William and Lorraine Kathryn. Nine grandchildren include, Chad Smith, Niki Holman and Shannon McCarty; Raigan Whyte, Brooke Gibson and Carrie Allen; Matthew, Nathan and Katie Greyard; 11 great grandchildren include, Zachery and Devon Holman; Riley, Tess and Tabitha McCarty; Ashtyn, Kaitlyn and Christopher Whyte; Devin and Graeson Gibson; and Olivia Allen;  one great grandchild, due to be born December 2006, Savannah Allen. Aside from being an educator, who believed that all children could learn, his many leadership facets were evident in other community activities.  His numerous friends and family will remember his good spirit and his ability to tell a good story to make a defining point.  His love of gardening and helping those in need was part of his enduring character. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 28 in the Epworth United Methodist Church, Ripley, where the funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m.  A graveside service will follow in the Smith Cemetery, Uler, Roane County, WV. Born December 8, 1924, in Sutton, she was the daughter of the late Fred Grant Morton and Nona Keeney Morton. Oct 20 2006  Paul Herbert Brown, most beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, went to his home in Heaven Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, at his residence at Indore. Born Dec. 2, 1934, he was the son of the late Jim and Bertha Brown. He was preceded in death by his great-granddaughter, Olivia Brooke Cliver, and sister, Eva Faye Brown.  Paul was a life member of VFW Post 4419, Clay, and attended more bi-monthly meetings than any other member. He was a member of the Clay Lions Club, was on the board of directors of Lizemores Fire Department, a volunteer driver of the DAV van and a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was disabled in 1976, but that never slowed his support for extra-curricular activities for teens in the county, especially the Clay County High School Dance Team where he was know as the “Dance Team Grandpa.” He was also and avid churchgoer, enjoying services of various denominations and gospel sings. Oct 15 2006 Beulah Mullins Workman, 75, of Charleston, formerly of Clay, died October 13, 2006, at CAMC Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was retired from the Clay County Board of Education. Beulah was the daughter of the late Whirlie C. and Myrtle C. Parsons Moore. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Darrell Mullins; son, Randall Mullins; brother, Beverly Moore; and sister, Patricia Rumbarger.  She is survived by sons, Stephen Mullins of Charleston, David Mullins of Ripley, and Brian Workman of Elkview; daughters, Debra Wiley of Charleston, Connie Horne of Pensacola, Fla., and Billie McQuaid of Brownsville, Mich.; brothers, Creed Moore of Clendenin, and Bernard Moore of Weston; sisters, Betty Cohne of Virginia, Evelyn Smith of Virginia, Autiove Breutch of Ohio, Agnes Jurgensen of Ohio, and Lorna Cogar of Cleveland, Ohio; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.  The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, October 16, 2006, at Matics Funeral Home with Virgil Ross officiating. Paul G. Duffield, 58, of Lizemores, Clay County, died Thursday, October 5, 2006, at Little Spruce in Kanawha County of injuries received from a logging accident.  He was born April 23, 1948, at Lizemores to the late Jack Nathan and Goldie Virginia Duffield. He was an employee of D&R Logging Company, at Pond Gap, and a former self-employed water well driller for 25 years. He was a member of the board of directors of the Carbide Recreation Club, and a member of the UMWA. He attended The Laurel Fork Missionary Baptist Church and The Bell Creek Community Church.  Surviving are his wife, Mary Elswick “P-Nut” Duffield; daughter, Virginia Ackermann and husband Mark of Wheeling; son, Daniel Duffield and wife Denise of Lizemores; grandchildren, Joshua Duffield, Karley Duffield, Tristan Duffield, and Edward Ackermann; sisters, Jocie Moore of Dixie, Macil Bird of Lizemores, Martha Bird of Dixie, and Wanda Walters of Lizemores; and brother, Jerry Duffield of Lizemores.  The funeral service will be 1 p.m. October 9, 2006, at Pennington Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Denise Rogers.  He was a retired millwright and safety inspector for General Motors in Brookpark, OH. Sept 23 2006  Albert L. “Booney” Sommerville, 73, of Webster Springs passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington, after a short illness.  Booney is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Barbara; daughters, Jennifer and her husband, Jerry Cutlip, of Paden City, and Jan and her husband, Mike Smith of Hurricane; granddaughters, Milisa, Ayme, Hilary and Megan Cutlip; grandson, Jacob Smith; sister, Mary Margaret Sommerville of Webster Springs; uncle and aunt, Joe and Maxine Moore of Bradenton, Fla.; aunt, Joy Moore of Webster Springs; and many cousins and friends. Booney was a lifelong resident of Webster Springs and had a long and distinguished career of public service. He attended Glenville State College and West Virginia University for undergraduate studies and was a graduate of the West Virginia University College of Law. Upon graduation from law school, he served as an assistant attorney general under C. Donald Robertson and left that employment to engage in the private practice of law in Webster Springs. He was first elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1954 from Webster County and served in the House until 1977. While in the House of Delegates, he served as vice chairman of the Committee on Finance and chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary. He was elected judge of the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit, which includes Webster, Clay and Gilmer counties, serving from 1977 until his retirement on June 30, 1996, assuming senior status. While serving in the judiciary, he was elected treasurer, secretary, vice president and president of the West Virginia Judicial Association. In addition, he served by special assignment on the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals.  Booney was an avid sportsman and enjoyed immensely the West Virginia natural surrounding and his camp on the Back Fork of Elk River. Sept 19 2006  Lloyd R. (Johnny) Drake, 82, of Ivydale died September 16, 2006 at Beverly Healthcare, Glasgow after a long illness. Born August 29 1924, at Ivydale. He was retired from the Department of Highways with 16 years of service, a member of the Odd Fellows and a member of Rogers Fork Baptist Church.  Surviving are his wife of 56 years Frances Queen Drake of Ivydale, one daughter Llyn Drake of Clay, four sons Johnny D. Sept 13 2006  Billy Hall, 72, of Lizemores, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2006, in CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston. Born Oct. 12, 1933, in Lincoln County, he was the son of the late Garfield and Ina Marie Hall. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Elouise Vaniman. He was a retired employee from the West Virginia Division of Highways, a Navy and Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a life member of the DAV. Billy was a born-again Christian. Surviving: wife, Wanda Jean Hamric Hall; sons and their wives, The Rev. Ricky and Debra Ann Hall of Lizemores and Robert and Kelly Hall of Walton; grandchildren, Natalie Nacole Coley of Jacksonville, Fla., Elizabeth Erin Gray of Boomer and Kayla Dawn Hall of Walton; sisters, Kathryn Criss of Oak Hill and Paulette Harris of Georgia; and a brother, Arlie Hall of Clay. Sept 13 2006 David Franklin Legg, 70, of Duck, entered into rest September 12, 2006, at CAMC-Memorial Division. Born on April 16, 1936, in Harrison, he was the son of the late William Scott and Ora Josephine Legg. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his grandson, Matthew Rose. He was a retired laborer with U.S. Steel with 30 years of service. Tracy.  She was a payroll supervisor for the Clay County Board of Education and a member of Belle Creek Baptist Church, Dixie. Aug 7 2006 Dora Jean Jarvis, 76, of Maysel, died Saturday, August 5, 2006, at home after a long illness.   She was a retired Educator having served as Principal of Clay Elementary School and H.E. White Elementary School in Clay County and Bridge Elementary School in Kanawha County. After many years of teaching in both Clay and Kanawha Counties she retired from Clay County Schools. Jean received her B.A. in education from WV State College and attended Marshall University then WVU where she earned her Masters Degree in Elementary Education.   She was a member and officer of Clay Lions Club where she received both the Leonard Jarrett and the Melvin Jones awards, a member of the Clay Golden Delicious Festival Board of Directors and it?s Treasurer, a founding member of the Clay County Youth and Agricultural Fair, Secretary and longtime member of Francis Chapter No. 28 Order of the Eastern Star, and a Member of Fairview Baptist Church, Clay, WV.  Jean was born May 19, 1930 to Leonidas Burton Sears and WV Engle Sears of Corton, WV. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter,   Jean Ann Walker and brother, Paul Avis, William Hale, Buel, Roland Claire, Leonidas B. Jr., and John B. Sears.   Surviving Jean is her husband Donald H. Jarvis, son William Ronald Walker Jr. of Maysel, daughter Eleanor Sue Butcher of Procious, Stepson Jeffery Jarvis and wife Betty of Key Largo, Florida, Stepdaughter Alice Ann Jarvis of New Castle, Delaware, Foster children Joseph Myers of Dunbar and Janet Starcher of Maysel. He gave us all a name to be proud of. Tommy honored his word and taught us how to meet challenges, accept disappointments and enjoy life. He tickled us and spanked us, but most of all he loved us. Aug 5 2006 Carolyn Elaine “Tootsie” Rogers, 56, of Clay, went home to be with the Lord at the home of her daughter, Alisha Hamilton, in Spotsylvania, VA, surrounded by her loving family.  Born on June 23, 1950, in Clay, she was the daughter of the late C. Earl and Ruby Gray Carte. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her nephews, Robert “Robbie” Carte II, David Allen Summers, great-nephew, Aaron Blake Nottingham.  She served in the WV National Guard. She was a waitress for many years before becoming the co-owner of Town and Country Diner in Clay, and attended Jubilee Mountain Church in Clay.  Carolyn is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Alisha and Jared Hamilton of Spotsylvania, VA, Joesette and Eugene Grubbs of Point, TX, Andrea and Rob White of Spotsylvania, VA; grandchildren, Corina, Tabatha and Conner Grubbs, Hunter Bowman, Jorja and Kyle White, Caleb, Brandon, and Austin Hamilton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sandra Carte Adkins of Clay, Linda and Allen Stephenson of Clay, Wanda and Roger Chapman of Roane County, Beverly and Johnny Stewart of Clay, and Ronda and Kevin Dennis of Clay; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Connie Carte of Indore, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. August 1 2006 Carolene Marie Samples, 68, of Bomont, WV entered into rest Sunday, July 30, 2006.  Meeting her at the Gates of Glory were her parents, Dorothy and Lee Shaffer and her brothers, Edward and Lawrence Shaffer. Carolene recently returned to West Virginia to be with her family after spending several years in California and most recently, New Bern, NC where she was active with the Ladies Auxiliary of the local VFW post.  She leaves a void in the hearts of many dear friends there. Carolene leaves behind her children, Donald McNeiland of Grand Cayman Islands, Alan McNeiland of South Carolina, Rose Cantrell of Bomont, WV, Ty Samples of Rainelle, WV, and Arthur “Sparky” Samples of North Carolina.  She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Joshua, Adam, Savannah, Melody, Montana, Bradley, Tori, Cierra, Shana, Kevin, Michael and James as well as her sister, Kay of Texas and her brother Bill of Elkview. Born on November 24, 1923, in Clay, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Emma May. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald Woods; son, Donald Woods, and 8 brothers.  She was a retired cashier for Royal Farm Stores, a member of the Homemaker’s Club and the Democratic Club. July 22 2006 Mary Lou Devlin, 74, of Ivydale, died July 20, 2006, at CAMC-Memorial Division. Born on September 15, 1931, she was the daughter of the late William John and Harriett Dowsett. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, James Patterson Devlin.  She was a nursing instructor at Hurley School of Nursing in Flint, MI for 15 years and University of Charleston for 20 years. She was a member and past president of the Clay Lion’s Club, and was the first woman District Governor in WV. She volunteered many years as a 4-H Camp Nurse for Clay County. July 18 2006  Stover, Mrs. Flora June Age 68 of Middletown passed away Saturday morning, July 15, 2006 at her residence. She was born in Clay County, West Virginia June 4, 1938, the youngest daughter of Fitzhugh Lee and Lula (Rose) Tripplett. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Survivors include her husband, Charles Stover; two daughters, Pam Schafer and Tammy Stover; two sons, Doug Nutter and Charles Stover, Jr.; three grandsons, Lindsey Schafer, Steven Brown, and Carl Schafer, Jr.; a sister, Nova Young; and a brother, Kenneth Tripplett. She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Esther McGlothlin, Leona Shelton, Della Salisbury, Irene Nelson, and Freda Gerleman; and four brothers, James Triplett, Alfred Carl Triplett, Jennings Triplett, and Clarence Triplett. Evans Sizemore, 89, of Salem, WV, formerly of Lizemores, entered into rest July 12, 2006, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, WV.   Born on November 20, 1916, at Lizemores, he was the son of the late Robert and Lula Elliott Sizemore. June 19 2006   Waitman "Bud" Samples, 81, of Bomont, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, June 17, 2006, at his residence.  He was born August 23, 1924, at Bomont, the son of the late Okey O. and Bertie Matheny Samples. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Chester; and sisters, Hallie Roberts, Vida Hill, Mabel Samples, and Opal Smith.   He retired from the WV Dept. of Highways, where he worked as an assistant supervisor. Nora Carmin Samples The spirit of Carmin returned to God who loaned her to us for 77 years, 3 months, and 2 days. Carmin was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, a wonderful friend to everyone she met. Always smiling, she especially loved her extended family. Leaving behind to cherish her memory are husband of 58 years, Donald; daughter, Vivian Maynor of Elkview; grandson, Abe Jones (whom she raised as a son) of Procious; granddaughter, Jill Grandchamp of Wilmington, N.C., and Jodi Grimm of Pinch; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Justin Jones, Dylan Grandchamp, and Luke, Tyler, Emily, and Bryce Grimm; brothers, Dexter Dudley and Deward (Daniel) Dawson of Procious, and Dane Dawson of Shreve, Ohio; and sisters, Claudia O'Dell and Chessie McCune of Massilon, Ohio. Carmin loved to travel; during her life she visited 47 states and 11 foreign countries. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Isabella Deloris Pritt, and his brothers and sisters.  He was a US Army Veteran and a retired saw mill operator from Pierson Lumber Company.  Survivors include his son, David and his companion, Debbie DeMoss of Clay; son, Brian Pritt of Clay; daughters, Terri Pritt, Cynthia Keen, Sherri Carte, Kelly Gray, and Alice Pritt, all of Clay, Marcella Elswick of Summersville, Charlotte Hall of Bomont, and Melanie Groves of Spencer; 14 grandchildren.  Funeral service will be 2 pm Sunday, June 4, 2006, at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, with Minister Ralph Davis and Minister Teddy Legg officiating. The body will be cremated. A private burial will be held at a later date.  Friends may call 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
 

June 2 2006  Donald R. “Firpo” Jones of Clay passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 31, 2006, after a long illness. He was 87 years old.  Donald was a member of Lick Fork Free Will Baptist Church and the Local VFW Post 4419. Before retirement, Donald was active in the Clay County Parks and Recreation and the Clay County Garden Delicious Apple Festival. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in England and France. He was retired from Cedar Coal Company.  Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Newman and Virgie Jones; a brother, Casey Jones; and a grandson, James Donald Gency.  Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Thelma Ramsey Jones; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Joe and Bertha Jones of Red House, and Gary James and Elizabeth Jones >

May 30 2006  Darrell Lee Shamblin Sr., 45, of Procious died at home after a sudden illness. He was born May 19, 1961, at Clay, worked as a rig hand and was an Army veteran. He is survived by his wife, Ona Marie Samples Shamblin; sons, Darrell Lee Shamblin Jr. and Jeremy Wayne Shamblin, both of Procious; parents, Junior L. and Mary Carolyn Dobbins Shamblin of Procious; brothers, Herschel, Rocky and Michael Shamblin, all of Procious, and John Shamblin of McDavid, Fla. The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 1, at Walls Cemetery, Procious, with Pastor Perry Haag officiating. The Clay VFW Post will be performing military graveside rites. May 29 2006 James Daris “Jim” Neff, 63 , of Lizemores entered into rest Sunday, May 28, 2006. Born in Clay, he was the son of the late Acie and Etta (Hamrick) Neff. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two daughters Debbie  Lynn and Tina Marie Neff.  He was owner of Lizemore Grocery.  James is survived by his wife, Nancy Mullins Neff, daughters Michelle  (Micki) Robinson, Tammi Moore both of Bentree, WV.  4 grandchildren, Jared, Shayne, Jayla, and Shaylee, 3 brothers and 6  Sisters.  Funeral service will be 11:00 A.M Thursday, June 1, 2006 at Carl Wilson Funeral home, Clay, with Minister Larry Skaggs officiating. Born on September 7,1899, in Roane County, WV she was the oldest daughter of the late Jake and Naomi Legg Igo. She was a charter member of Buffalo Valley Baptist Church.  In addition to her parents and her siblings, she was preceded in death by her husband, Banes, her daughter Mary Helen Nutter, sons Clifford, Carl  Hedgeman “Budge”, Arch, and Walter, 3 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson.  She is survived by her daughters Maysel Davis of Franklin, IN, Mabel Bragg of Piqua OH., and Mamie Williams of Madison, WV, her sons Bobbie Damon of Fairview, WV, Jake of Akron, OH, and Earl Glen “Bill” , Arnold Jerry, and Banes Franklin of Clay, her caregiver Molly Hypes, 29 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, 27 great great grandchildren, 1 great great great grandson, and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, with Minister John Pruitt officiating. Born on May 15, 1931, in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late McKinley and Cora Laxton. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her son, William Kenny Duncan, Jr., and 5 brothers and sisters.  She was retired from Grace Hospital in Cleveland, OH, as a central supply technician. She was a born again Christian, and attended the Wings of Deliverance Church, Maysel. Survivors include her son, Joe Wayne Duncan of Cleveland, OH; daughters, Karen R. Mosley of Looneyville and Marjorie C. Duncan Roberts of Rome, GA; 4 brothers and sisters, 10 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be 11 am Sunday, May 28, 2006, at Dundon Cemetery, Clay, with Minister Jerry Hanshaw officiating. There will be no visitation.
