Dec 25 2006 V. Madeleine Bell, 86, of Clay, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Ivydale, after a long illness. Born on July 17,1920, in Lizemores, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Della Price Fitzwater. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, William Allen Bell; two sisters, Reba Legg of Bickmore and Mary Jean of Indore; three brothers, Donald Fitzwater of Fola, Haggard Fitzwater of Indore, and Bill Joe Fitzwater of Pensacola, FL. She was a waitress at Bell?s Restaurant in Clay for many years, and was a member of Fola Missionary Baptist Church. of Dixie, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, December 16, 2006,
after an extended illness. Ruby was born January 25, 1953, in Montgomery.
She was the daughter of the late Cecil H. O'Dell and Shirley Jones O'Dell
of Dixie. She was a homemaker and a member of The Christian Church of Lizemore.
Surviving are her husband, Delbert Rogers; son, Harold Rogers and wife
Lisa of Dixie; stepchildren, Delbert Lee “Bubba” Rogers of Burea, Ohio,
and Debbie Buckosh of Vermillion, Ohio; brothers, Cecil H. O'Dell Jr. of
Sandyville and Harless Elswick of Gauley Bridge; sisters, Charlotte Elberta
Foreman of Pelican, La., Debbie Lewis of Louisiana, and Corene Ryder of
Ansted; grandson, Hunter Rogers; step-grandchildren, Brooke and Bethaney
Buckosh; uncles, Okey Jones and wife Evie of Elkview, Ralph O'Dell and
wife, Mitzi, of Dixie, and Shirley G. O'Dell of Dixie; and special friends,
Anna Bell Taylor, Kathy Nottingham, and Dortha West. Ruby left a lot of
loving family and friends behind. Besides her late father,
Ruby was also preceded in death by her brother, King “Bucky” O'Dell; sister,
Beverly O'Dell; grandmother, Ruby Mayflower Jones; and grandparents, Cecil
and Myrtle O'Dell. Services for Ruby will be held at 2 p.m.

officiating. Burial will follow at the Hill Cemetery at Belva. Friends

Roy Arnold Keener, 76, of Kearns, Utah,
formerly of Clay, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2006, at home after
a long illness. He served in the Air Force for eight years and retired
as a truck driver after 25 years of service. In addition to his wife, Jackie,
he is survived by his daughter, Karla Peterson-Paulson; son, Dale; mother,
Beatrice Keener of Elkview; brothers, Rensford Jr. of Texas, Pete of Florida
and Darrell of Belle; and sisters, Artie Melton of Elkview, Joan Perdew
of Ohio, Brenda Beasley of South Carolina and Norma Robinson of Elkview.
Graveside services were held Monday, Dec. 18, in Valley View Memorial Park

in Cabin Creek, he was the son of the late Frank and Judy Tanner. He was

He was a big West Virginia University fan and an avid outdoorsman. Nov 22 2006 Darrell A. Samples, Sr. of Procious, passed away November 20, 2006, at his home after a long illness. Born on August 9, 1932, he was the son of Alta and the late Owen Samples of Bomont. He began working in the oil fields in 1950, first with Davis Oil Company in Bomont, and then with South Penn Oil Company at Walton, WV. Darrell retired from Pennzoil Oil Co. (old South Penn) in 1990 as Superintendent of Pennzoil?s central division in Spencer, WV. During his early years working in the oil fields, he moonlighted as a radio and television repairman after learning the trade via a correspondence course and pumped for other small oil companies in the evenings. Darrell was always a hard worker, a math whiz and very mechanically inclined. He could do complex math in his head and could figure out and fix about anything. The family always went to him for help repairing anything that broke. Darrell was an avid trout fisherman and loved to deer hunt and was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Walton, WV. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis J. Samples of Procious; mother, Alta Samples of Clendenin; sister, Loretta Moore of Clendenin; brother, Ronald Samples of Culloden; four children, Artie Samples, Debbie Walker, Sandy Rogers, all of Procious, and Melinda Romano of Maysel; 11 grandchildren and 7 great grand-children. Clay County, she was a daughter of the late Donnie Edward and Dona Kathryn
Tanner Mollohan. She was a homemaker and a member of Hallburg Baptist
Church. She was a member of Braxton County Senior Citizens where Maggie
and her husband were crowned Valentine Queen and King in 2006. She
is survived by her husband, Denzil Hall; sons, Branty Mollohan, Don Curtis
Mollohan and Arthur Mollohan, all of Elmira, and Bradley Mollohan of Big
Otter; daughters, Carol Sue Robuck of Elmira and Elnora Young of Jacksonville,

Nov 21 2006 Paul Durward Lockhart of
Charleston passed away Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, after a long illness.
Durward was born July 21, 1922, in Clay, to the late Dr. Ralph Roy Lockhart
and Myrtle Reed Lockhart. He graduated from Clay County High School and
attended Marshall University and later served in the U.S. Army during World
War II. He worked for State Automobile Insurance Company for 36 years before
retiring in 1984. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Clay
County Bank from 1971 to 2003. He moved with his family to Charleston in
1966 and lived there until his death. In addition to his parents,
Durward was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Reba Legg
Lockhart and a brother, James Kermit Lockhart. He is survived by five children,
Connie Davis and husband, Dale, of Charleston, Jo Peters and her husband,
Geoffrey, of Fairfax, Va., Dr. James D. Lockhart and his wife, Shirley,
of New Haven, Dr. Cody Lockhart and his wife, Karen, of Beckley, and Dixie
Kellmeyer and her husband, Fred, of Charleston; eight grandchildren, Christopher
Davis and his wife, Kelli, of Alpharetta, Ga., Dr. Kara Peters of Durham,
N.C., Shawn Peters of Jersey City, N.J., Heather Lloyd and her husband,
J.T., of New Haven, Dr. Carrie Dillard and her husband, Dustin, of Hurricane,
Amy Paxton of Charleston, Amanda Campbell and her husband, Dr. John Campbell,

Kenneth Matthew Lambert, 86, of Newton, died
Wednesday, November 15, 2006, at 1:30 p.m., in the CAMC-Memorial Hospital,
Charleston, after an extended illness. Kenneth was a retired 25 year employee
of Betsy Ross Foods and was a member of the Teamster’s Union, Local 348,
both in Mogadore, OH. He was a decorated Army veteran of World War
II. He was awarded five medals, including the Silver Star.
He served under the command Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower during the Battle
of the Bulge. He also fought in other battles at Normandy, Northern France,
the Rhineland, Central Europe and the Ardennes. Survivors include
his wife, June A. Drake Lambert of Newton; son, David Lambert of Akron,
OH; stepson, Jeffrey Hall of Copley, OH. A graveside service will be conducted

Born on January 30, 1942, in Bickmore, WV, he was the son of the late William Andrew and Mary Mildred Nottingham. Oct 27 2006 Lucinda Jane B. Harris, 92,
of 113 Winterhaven Ave., Princeton, died Thursday, October 26, 2006,
at Harmony House Nursing Home in Lerona. Born April 16, 1914 in Clay
County, she was the daughter of the late Patrick Henry and Carrie Rogers
Butler. She was the retired language arts supervisor for the Clay County
school system. Mrs. Harris was a member of Carr Memorial United Methodist
Church. She attended Clay County schools and graduated from Clay County
High School and Glenville State College with a B.S. degree in education.
She received her Master's degree from Marshall University, West Virginia
University and Fink University. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority,
Retired Teachers Association and Valley Woman's Club and a former member
of the Order of the Eastern Star. In addition to her parents, her husband,
Edward Carroll Harris; one infant son; two sisters, Biddie Brannon and
Mary Wayne; and one great-great-grandson, Shawn Dunn, preceded her in death.
Survivors include one daughter, Carol J. Fowler Thompson of Princeton;
three grandchildren, Charles Edward Fowler and his wife, Debbie, Teresa
Jane Kelley and her husband, Darren, and Leslie Ann Fowler; three great-grandchildren,
Dillon Fowler, Sierra Kelley and Morgan Kelley; six great-great-grandchildren,
Chad Holt, T.J. Ford, Brianna Dunn, Kiera Dunn, Shawna Dunn and Ashley
Dunn; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Patricia Ford and Tommy Dunn and his
wife, Amanda; and former son-in-law, Stephen Brian Thompson of Princeton.

at the Chapel of the Wildwood Mausoleum at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton,

Oct 26 2006 Isaac Brooks Smith, 86, went
to be with the Lord on October 25, 2006. He was born February 11,
1920 in Akron, OH, a son of the late Rex H. and Nina May Hensley Smith.
His siblings include the late Dennis Smith and the late Charles Smith;
also, Madlyn Backus of Accokeek, MD, Marion Harold and Steven Smith both
of Newton. He graduated from Spencer High School in 1938 and
after completing his teaching certification at Glenville State College,
Brooks began a teaching career at Trace Fork, a one room school, in Roane
County. Shortly, however, he was called to serve in the Army during
World War II. Upon returning from the Army, he continued to teach
and completed a Master’s Degree and Administration Certification from West
Virginia University. Brooks became a principal and superintendent
of schools in Clay County (1952-1961) and a principal and superintendent
of schools in Jackson County (1961-1967). He also served as
superintendent of schools in Mason County (1967-1971) and then moved back
to Jackson County in 1972 as director of school maintenance and retired
in 1975. He married his lifetime companion, Katie Elizabeth Vineyard in
1940. Although they grew up within three miles of each other, they did
not formally meet until they were at Glenville State College. Brooks
and Katie have three surviving children, Dr. Dennie Smith of College Station,
TX, Dr. Randy Smith of Ripley, WV, and Dr. Nina Smith of Harrisonburg,
VA; and two children deceased, Timothy William and Lorraine Kathryn. Nine
grandchildren include, Chad Smith, Niki Holman and Shannon McCarty; Raigan
Whyte, Brooke Gibson and Carrie Allen; Matthew, Nathan and Katie Greyard;
11 great grandchildren include, Zachery and Devon Holman; Riley, Tess and
Tabitha McCarty; Ashtyn, Kaitlyn and Christopher Whyte; Devin and Graeson
Gibson; and Olivia Allen; one great grandchild, due to be born December
2006, Savannah Allen. Aside from being an educator, who believed that all
children could learn, his many leadership facets were evident in other
community activities. His numerous friends and family will remember
his good spirit and his ability to tell a good story to make a defining
point. His love of gardening and helping those in need was part of
his enduring character. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00
a.m. Saturday, October 28 in the Epworth United Methodist Church, Ripley,

Oct 20 2006 Paul Herbert Brown, most
beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, went to his
home in Heaven Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, at his residence at Indore. Born
Dec. 2, 1934, he was the son of the late Jim and Bertha Brown. He was preceded
in death by his great-granddaughter, Olivia Brooke Cliver, and sister,
Eva Faye Brown. Paul was a life member of VFW Post 4419, Clay, and
attended more bi-monthly meetings than any other member. He was a member
of the Clay Lions Club, was on the board of directors of Lizemores Fire
Department, a volunteer driver of the DAV van and a Marine Corps veteran
of the Korean Conflict. He was disabled in 1976, but that never slowed
his support for extra-curricular activities for teens in the county, especially
the Clay County High School Dance Team where he was know as the “Dance
Team Grandpa.” He was also and avid churchgoer, enjoying services of various
denominations and gospel sings. Survivors: his wife, Sonjie Childers Brown;
daughters and their husbands, Darlene and Mike Cliver of Indore, Wanda
Brown of Hurricane and Paula and CK Meadows of Gassaway; grandchildren,

Paul G. Duffield, 58, of Lizemores,
Clay
County, died Thursday, October 5, 2006, at Little Spruce in Kanawha County
of injuries received from a logging accident. He was born April 23,
1948, at Lizemores to the late Jack Nathan and Goldie Virginia Duffield.
He was an employee of D&R Logging Company, at Pond Gap, and a former
self-employed water well driller for 25 years. He was a member of the board
of directors of the Carbide Recreation Club, and a member of the UMWA.
He attended The Laurel Fork Missionary Baptist Church and The Bell Creek
Community Church. Surviving are his wife, Mary Elswick “P-Nut” Duffield;
daughter, Virginia Ackermann and husband Mark of Wheeling; son, Daniel
Duffield and wife Denise of Lizemores; grandchildren, Joshua Duffield,
Karley Duffield, Tristan Duffield, and Edward Ackermann; sisters, Jocie

Sept 23 2006 Albert L. “Booney” Sommerville,
73, of Webster Springs passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at
St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington, after a short illness. Booney is
survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Barbara; daughters, Jennifer and
her husband, Jerry Cutlip, of Paden City, and Jan and her husband, Mike
Smith of Hurricane; granddaughters, Milisa, Ayme, Hilary and Megan Cutlip;
grandson, Jacob Smith; sister, Mary Margaret Sommerville of Webster Springs;
uncle and aunt, Joe and Maxine Moore of Bradenton, Fla.; aunt, Joy Moore
of Webster Springs; and many cousins and friends. Booney was a lifelong
resident of Webster Springs and had a long and distinguished career of
public service. He attended Glenville State College and West Virginia University
for undergraduate studies and was a graduate of the West Virginia University
College of Law. Upon graduation from law school, he served as an assistant
attorney general under C. Donald Robertson and left that employment to
engage in the private practice of law in Webster Springs. He was first
elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1954 from Webster County
and served in the House until 1977. While in the House of Delegates, he
served as vice chairman of the Committee on Finance and chairman of the
Committee on the Judiciary. He was elected judge of the Fourteenth Judicial
Circuit, which includes Webster, Clay and Gilmer counties, serving from
1977 until his retirement on June 30, 1996, assuming senior status. While
serving in the judiciary, he was elected treasurer, secretary, vice president
and president of the West Virginia Judicial Association. In addition, he
served by special assignment on the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals.
Booney was an avid sportsman and enjoyed immensely the West Virginia natural
surrounding and his camp on the Back Fork of Elk River. He was truly a
considerate, loving person who will be missed by his family and friends.

82, of Ivydale died September 16, 2006 at Beverly Healthcare, Glasgow
after a long illness. Born August 29 1924, at Ivydale. He was retired from
the Department of Highways with 16 years of service, a member of the Odd
Fellows and a member of Rogers Fork Baptist Church. Surviving are
his wife of 56 years Frances Queen Drake of Ivydale, one daughter Llyn

Sept 13 2006 Billy Hall, 72, of Lizemores, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2006, in CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston. Born Oct. 12, 1933, in Lincoln County, he was the son of the late Garfield and Ina Marie Hall. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Elouise Vaniman. He was a retired employee from the West Virginia Division of Highways, a Navy and Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a life member of the DAV. Billy was a born-again Christian. Aug 7 2006 Dora Jean Jarvis, 76, of Maysel,
died Saturday, August 5, 2006, at home after a long illness.
She was a retired Educator having served as Principal of Clay Elementary
School and H.E. White Elementary School in Clay County and Bridge Elementary
School in Kanawha County. After many years of teaching in both Clay and
Kanawha Counties she retired from Clay County Schools. Jean received her
B.A. in education from WV State College and attended Marshall University
then WVU where she earned her Masters Degree in Elementary Education.
She was a member and officer of Clay Lions Club where she received both
the Leonard Jarrett and the Melvin Jones awards, a member of the Clay Golden
Delicious Festival Board of Directors and it?s Treasurer, a founding member
of the Clay County Youth and Agricultural Fair, Secretary and longtime
member of Francis Chapter No. 28 Order of the Eastern Star, and a Member
of Fairview Baptist Church, Clay, WV. Jean was born May 19, 1930
to Leonidas Burton Sears and WV Engle Sears of Corton, WV. She was preceded
in death by her parents, a daughter, Jean Ann Walker and brother,
Paul Avis, William Hale, Buel, Roland Claire, Leonidas B. Jr., and John
B. Sears. Surviving Jean is her husband Donald H. Jarvis, son
William Ronald Walker Jr. of Maysel, daughter Eleanor Sue Butcher of Procious,
Stepson Jeffery Jarvis and wife Betty of Key Largo, Florida, Stepdaughter

He was a loving husband and father. For 39 years he worked hard to support
his family as a coal miner. He gave us all a name to be proud of. Tommy
honored his word and taught us how to meet challenges, accept disappointments
and enjoy life. He tickled us and spanked us, but most of all he loved
us. We all love and miss him very much. He is survived by wife Pearl
of 59 years, 14 children Evie Jones, Teddy Keiffer, Tommy Keiffer Jr.,
Kathia Shaffer, Sandra Ward, Kenneth Keiffer, Patricia MacFarland, Robert

56, of Clay, went home to be with the Lord at the home of her daughter,
Alisha Hamilton, in Spotsylvania, VA, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on June 23, 1950, in Clay, she was the daughter of the late C. Earl
and Ruby Gray Carte. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded
in death by her nephews, Robert “Robbie” Carte II, David Allen Summers,
great-nephew, Aaron Blake Nottingham. She served in the WV National
Guard. She was a waitress for many years before becoming the co-owner of
Town and Country Diner in Clay, and attended Jubilee Mountain Church in
Clay. Carolyn is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Alisha
and Jared Hamilton of Spotsylvania, VA, Joesette and Eugene Grubbs of Point,
TX, Andrea and Rob White of Spotsylvania, VA; grandchildren, Corina, Tabatha

August 1 2006 Carolene Marie Samples, 68, of
Bomont, WV entered into rest Sunday, July 30, 2006. Meeting her
at the Gates of Glory were her parents, Dorothy and Lee Shaffer and her
brothers, Edward and Lawrence Shaffer. Carolene recently returned to West
Virginia to be with her family after spending several years in California
and most recently, New Bern, NC where she was active with the Ladies Auxiliary
of the local VFW post. She leaves a void in the hearts of many dear
friends there. Carolene leaves behind her children, Donald McNeiland of
Grand Cayman Islands, Alan McNeiland of South Carolina, Rose Cantrell of
Bomont, WV, Ty Samples of Rainelle, WV, and Arthur “Sparky” Samples of
North Carolina. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Joshua,
Adam, Savannah, Melody, Montana, Bradley, Tori, Cierra, Shana, Kevin, Michael

she was the daughter of the late William John and Harriett Dowsett. In

James Patterson Devlin. She was a nursing instructor at Hurley School
of Nursing in Flint, MI for 15 years and University of Charleston for 20
years. She was a member and past president of the Clay Lion’s Club, and
was the first woman District Governor in WV. She volunteered many years
as a 4-H Camp Nurse for Clay County. She also served many years as the
President of the Clay County Board of Health. Survivors include her

June 2 2006 Donald R. “Firpo” Jones of Clay passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 31, 2006, after a long illness. He was 87 years old. Donald was a member of Lick Fork Free Will Baptist Church and the Local VFW Post 4419. Before retirement, Donald was active in the Clay County Parks and Recreation and the Clay County Garden Delicious Apple Festival. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in England and France. He was retired from Cedar Coal Company. 45, of Procious died at home after a sudden illness. He was born May
19, 1961, at Clay, worked as a rig hand and was an Army veteran. He is
survived by his wife, Ona Marie Samples Shamblin; sons, Darrell Lee Shamblin
Jr. and Jeremy Wayne Shamblin, both of Procious; parents, Junior L. and

May 21 2006 Larry Dean McLaughlin, 60,
of Ivydale, WV, passed away Friday, May 19, 2006, at CAMC from pulmonary
fibrosis. He was born December 4, 1945, in Gassaway, WV, to the late Gory
and Effie McLaughlin of Ivydale. He was preceded in death by an infant
son, Terry Allen McLaughlin. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved
his farm and his hobbies. He was retired from WCI Steel in Youngstown,
OH. He was a Vietnam Veteran and an active member of Clay VFW Post 4419
where he served as Senior Vice Commander. He was on the Board of Directors
of the N. H. Dyer Health Department. He is survived by his wife of
36 years, Joyce Sawyers McLaughlin; son, Larry McLaughlin, Jr and wife
, Jessica, of Sharon, PA; daughter, Twila Jo Micchia and husband, Tom,
of Wake Forest, NC. He leaves behind his pride and joy, his granddaughters,

March 27 2006 Wilma Arlene Duffield Eyermann, 87, entered into final rest on Friday, March 24, 2006, at her daughter?s home in Butler Kentucky, where she has resided for the past eight years. Born on July 8, 1918, in Duck, WV, she was the daughter of the late J. Dyer Duffield and Emma Vaughn Duffield. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Robert B. Eyermann, four brothers and a sister. Her sister Emelyn Duffield Linkinogger of Looneyville, WV and Brother Paul Duffield of California survive her. She is also survived by her daughters Suzan, Martha and Cathy and sons Robert Jr. and Charles, 9 grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. She was long-standing member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Belpre, Ohio. She was an avid reader, gardener, cared and croquet player. She enjoyed many trips to Gatlinburg with her children. She was also able to visit many Holy Land sites in 1994. In her final months she had many visits from family and friends and passed on some of her famous cooking recipes to her children. CUMMINGS, JACKIE LYNN, age 49, of Christiansburg passed away Thursday, March 16, 2006 at her home. A 1974 graduate of Clay High School, Clay, WV, she received a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Radford University in 1996, and a Associate in Arts and Science with a major in General Studies from New River Community College. She was a member of Draper Baptist Church where she served as choir director and a Sunday School teacher. She had been an employee of Virginia Tech and Dr. David McMillan as office manager, she was a member of the Adeline’s Singing Group she enjoyed doing needlepoint. March 5 2006 “Poppy” Lanzo Lee
Moore, 84,of Bristol, Va., went to be with the Lord March 3, 2006,
at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born July 14, 1921,
in Bickmore, W.Va., a son of the late Sanford Andrew and Cilicia Mirel
Hamrick Moore. Mr. Moore served in the United States Navy from August 4,
1942, until February 1948, and the United States Naval Reserves for 6 years
until 1954. After serving his country he worked at Fletchers Enamel Plant
in Dunbar. He went on to work for Kanawha County Schools, Mound Elementary,
for 35 years before retiring and moving to Bristol, Va. The joy of his
life was his granddaughter and his family and special friends in Dunbar,
Fairlawn Baptist Church, Mound Elementary School, V.I. Ranch Road neighbors,
Valley Pike Elementary Faculty, staff and children, Monarch Place neighbors,
and his church family at Central Baptist Church and Trinity Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Jean Crouser, Sybil McLaughlin,
Dolly Nottingham, Molly Nottingham and June George; and his brothers, Jennings
Moore and Hubert Moore. Survivors include daughter, Linda M. King and husband

Feb 25 2006 Eugene Mason Cutlip, 80, of Big Otter, departed this life February 24, 2006, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, WV. He had resided at Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Big Otter, for the past six years after suffering a debilitating stroke. Born on April 7, 1925, near Servia, he moved to Clay County when he was 2 years old. He was the son of the late Frederick Isaac Cutlip and Bertha White Cutlip. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Jack, Freddie, and Woodrow; sisters, Lucy and Myrtle; children, Charlotte and Dale, and ex-wife, Betty. He was a self-employed carpenter, and a Protestant. Cocoa Beach, Fla., died on Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, after a long illness.
Steve was born on March 22, 1947, in Bomont, and was formerly of Charleston.
He is preceded in death by his father, Clyde Sr., and his mother, Gladys.
Surviving are his wife, Sharon; son, Stephen; and one stepson, Mike. Also
surviving are his brothers, Clyde Jr. “Butch” of Procious; Anthony “Tony”
of Clendenin; Dwight “Mike” of Big Chimney; John of Wilmington, N.C., and
Patrick of St. Albans; and one sister, Christine “Cookie” of Point Pleasant.
A private service was held on Friday, Feb. 17, at the Turner Funeral Home
in Ellwood City, Pa. Steve was a member of the United States Marine Corps
and served in Viet Nam. He also served as a racing official at the Charleston
Speedway. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday,
Feb. 25, at Meadowbrook Freewill Baptist Church, Route 114, Charleston,
with the Rev. Harold Shafer officiating.

on August 12, 1947, at Cedar Grove, WV, he was the son of the late Jesse
Starcher and Thelma Ashley Starcher Drake. He was a heavy equipment
operator for Operating Engineers and an Army veteran. He was a member of
the Sutton Moose Lodge, and International Union Operating Engineers Local
132. He is survived by his companion, Elaine Reed of Procious, and

Haines City died of heart failure Monday (Jan. 23, 2006) in Haines City.
He was 70. Born in Clay, W. Va., on Nov. 29, 1935, he came
to Haines City from there in 1955. He was a self-employed entrepreneur.

Jan 25 2006 Thomas M. Mahan, 74, of Ivydale,
Clay County, went to be with the Lord Jan. 23, 2006, at CAMC Memorial
Hospital. He was born Jan. 1, 1932, in Charleston, to the late Leslie
Dana and Alfreda McKinley Mahan. His first wife, Cleo J. Mahan; his sister,
Katherine Kenney; and brother, Cameron N. Mahan, also preceded him in death.
He was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School before joining the U.
S. Air Force during the Korean War and a member of the W.V. Air National
Guard. Upon his safe return, he enrolled in Morris Harvey College working
toward a B.A. degree. During this time, he joined the Charleston Police
Department working his way up to detective, all the while attending W.
V. State College and the Charleston Police Cadet Training. After his duty
as a Charleston Police Detective, he became a MedicoLegal investigator
for the Department of Health, Officer of the Chief Medical Examiner, and
retired as a special investigator W. V. Department of Welfare, Medicaid
Fraud Unit Control. He attended Granny's Creek Community Church and was
a former member of the Lion's Club. Tom is survived by his loving
wife, Patty R. Mahan; daughters, Mari Lynn Gunnoe and her husband, Gary,
of Charleston, Patricia A. Mahan of Clay, and Patty L. Mahan of Ivydale;
sons, Thomas L. Mahan and his wife, Linda, of Kenna, Jesse L. Mahan of

Jan 24 2006 James H. Morton, 62, of Adonijah, Clay, Co., died on Jan 21, 2006 at CAMC Memorial after a short illness. When God called him home, he was reunited with his loving wife of 32 years Sharon Nichols Morton, his parents Allen “ Fairbanks” and Eva Bird Morton, his brother Earnest and sister Dorothy Mae and a host of family and friends. James was retired coal miner, having worked last at High Power Energy in Drennen. He was an avid outdoors man and loved hunting and ginsenging. He was the owner of Adonijah Enterprises, which specialized in log-grown Shiitake mushrooms. He was such a talented man. He loved playing the guitar and listening to Blue Grass and Country music. His pride and joys were his grandsons. They learned so much from him, in the short time they had him. James was loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He is survived by his Son-in-Law and daughter, Scott and Angela Burkhamer of Adonijah, grandsons Alexander James and Bryan Scott Burkhamer of Adonijah, brother And sister-in-law Kester and Viola Morton of Adonijah, several nephews, nieces, and friends. Jan 15 2006 Adrian H. (Punch) Legg, 82, of Bickmore, entered into rest Friday, January 13, 2006, at his home after a long illness. Born on May 6, 1923, at Bickmore, he was the son of the late William C. and Mamie Osborne Legg. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Juanita; sister, Reba Legg Lockhart; brothers, Kelly and Lennis; and granddaughters, Cheryl Hamrick and Chelsey Legg. He was retired from Elkem Metals, Alloy, WV, and was a member of the Fola Baptist Church and Clay VFW Post 4419. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving on the U.S. Houghton. On Jan. 2, 1944, his ship was torpedoed, and he spent 2 l/2 hours in the Arabian Sea before being rescued by a Norwegian Tanker. He served in the Navy from April 2, 1943 to Dec. 12, 1945. He is survived by eight children and their spouses; Ronnie and Polly of Ravenna, OH; Carol and Darrell Hamrick of Canvas, WV, Shirley and Kenneth Jarvis of Reno, OH, John and Diana, Brent and Reba, and Pat and Melissa, all of Fola, Henson and Judy of Bickmore, and Joe of Monroe, NC; grandchildren; Herb, Jerry and Shelby Legg, Tim, Brian and Brett Hamrick, Missy Bruns, Cortney Legg and Becky Legg Beasley, Tad, Chet and Montana Legg, and Joanne Nine, Michelle Knotts, Chris Legg and Amy Osborne, Holly Legg and Demi Legg; 15 great-grandchildren and a special niece, Donna Jo Asbury. Jan 12 2006 Dorma Beatrice Deems, 86, of Ashtabula, OH, entered into rest January 9, 2006, at Ashtabula Medical Center. Born on October 28, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Frank Falls and Lula Marks Falls. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, James Ford Deems and son, Ernie Deems. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her sons, Charles and Arnold Deems, both of Procious, Jimmy Deems of Mt. Vernon, OH, and Orville Deems of Geneva, OH; daughters, Lizzie Hanshaw, Chessie Sevy, and Emogene Deems, all of Procious, Alice Jones of Poca, and Goldie Deems, Velma Starcher, and Sylvia Runnions, all of Ashtabula, OH; 36 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 12 great- great-grandchildren. Jan 11 2006 Lucy Bussey Cadle, 90, of Gassaway, formerly of Duck, died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at Braxton County Memorial Hospital after a short illness. She was born April 13, 1915, a daughter of the late Cornelius and Arizona Rader Bussey in Camden on Gauley. She was a homemaker and a Baptist by faith. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by husband, Dewey Cadle; son, John; daughter, Helen; and her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Cadle Burrows and her husband, Gerald “Jerry” Burrows, with whom she made her home with for 22 years; son, Robert Cadle and wife, Nancy, of Ravenna, Ohio; grandchildren, John Dewey Cadle of Ravenna, Ohio, Charles Steve Cadle of Ravenna, Ohio, Terri Hall of Charleston, S.C., Tammy Cross and husband, Dominick of Kent, Ohio, Kristy Riffle and husband, David, of Burnsville; and several great-grandchildren, including Dominick Timothy Cross of Kent, Ohio, Jessica Nicole Burrows and Tristan Todd Riffle of Burnsville. Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 13, at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway, with the Rev. Mark Stump officiating. Burial will be in the Duffield Cemetery, Clay County.
Jan 11 2006 Alexandria “Allie” Nicole Moore, 9, of Clay died January 10 of injuries she received when struck by a truck on State Rt. 4 at Procious. She was a third grade student at Clay Elementary School. Allie was dearly loved by everyone who knew her. Allie is a former ballet student of Penny Musick of Montgomery. She was a former member of the Clay Cadets taught by Miss Donna Asbury. She ws a member of 4-H and participated in the Clay County Agriculture Youth Fair for three years. Allie played T-Ball and Minor League Baseball for Reed Gas Company of Clay. Allie has always been special and had gone through 10 surgeries over the years to deal with some birth defects. Her wonderful doctors have included Dr. Roger Nichols, Dr. Lavanya Shah, Dr. Tarakji, Dr. Lowery, Dr. Patnoe, Dr. Legg, Dr. Shah and Dr. Jayram. A special thank you to Dr. Vera Hoylman and Dr. Augusto Portillio. Those two doctors managed Allie’s care. Dr. Portillio helped form Allie into the beautiful lady she was. Allie is survived by her parents, Brian and Rene’ Moore of Clay; her beloved little sister, Abbie, (who she always wanted to have); maternal grandparents, Clinton and Beverly Nichols of Clay; paternal grandparents, Eva and Steve Thomas of Hartland and James and Sue Moore of Monroe, NC; loving aunts and uncles, Christie and Brian Gould of Wilmington, NC, Aaron and Kyla Nichols, Jacob and Stacie Nichols of Greensville, SC, Sally and Elbert Morton, Melody Adkins, Jim Moore, Tami and Shane Stout, Jeannie Marez, Vickie Boylen, Debbie and Darrell Burd, and Mary and Jacom Bruce. Also surviving are her cousins; Tyler, Brittany, Brooklyn and Ballard Gould, Salem Nichols, Kendra and Colleen Boylen, Shelley Boylen and Mallory Boylen, Morgan and Katlyn Burd and Laney Moore. Allie was the great-granddaughter of the late Dan and Nona Carper, Kelles and Beulah Nichols, Vernon and Ethel Adkins and Ervin and Viola Moore. She also leaves behind many friends, which she loved. A very special thanks to the people who stopped to help; Emily Samples, Colburn Hudnall and Mary Samples, to the EMS and First Responders that arrived, Chris Underwood, Steve Ware, Kim Rhodes and the others of you that I didn’t know. Jan 10 2006 Geneva “Ginny” Neeley, 83, of Clay, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, January 7, 2006 after a short illness. Born November 26, 1922, in Bluecreek, WV to the late George and Clara White. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Herman Neeley and son Ronald Newhouse. Ginny retired from Clay County School as a custodian and spent many years as co-director of the Christian Service Center and Heart to Heart in Clay. Survivors include her daughter Vickie Neeley of Clay, Grandchildren Wanda McCung of Charleston, Eddie Newhouse of Clendenin, and Dusty Tanner of Clay. 3 great-grandchildren. Born on October 4, 1919, in Clay County, he was the son of the late James Russell and Blanche Dale Ramsey Schoonover. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Amelia (Midge) Schoonover. He was a retired educator from the Clay County and Kanawha County Schools, a World War II Navy Veteran, and attended Lick Fork Baptist Church. Jan 6 2006 Nina Hall Murphy Triplett, 80, of Summersville, formerly of Dundon and Widen, entered into rest January 5, 2006, at CAMC-General Division. Born on July 26, 1925, in Clay, WV, she was the daughter of the late Mark Murphy and Vera Grace Hall Murphy. She was a school teacher for Clay County Schools, having taught in Ugly Run and Widen, a member of Clay United Methodist Church, and Odd Fellows Lodge. Survivors include her husband, Dennis W. Triplett of Summersville; son, William Mark Triplett of Summersville; daughters, Nina Jane Dishman of Summersville, Karen Leigh Butcher of Dille, and Sandra Joan McDonald of Georgia; 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
