Feb 2011

  • Feb. 28 am  from the email bag:  The monthly meeting of the Clay County Golden Delicious Festival Board of Directors has been canceled for March 3, 2011 and has been rescheduled for March 11, 2011 at 5:00 at the Clay Lions Community Center.  All those wanting to volunteer for the 2011 are encouraged to attend.
  • Feb. 28 11am  Education needed? Check out the new information over on the Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College info behind their homepage button.
  • Feb. 28 11am Clayberry is under a Tornado and Flash Flood watch according to the National Weather Service. Other than  a few minutes of heavy downpour and a few wind gusts, not much to report
  • Feb. 28 11 am  One lady did report a tree top blown down. That's how bad it is in this county, so poor, we can't even get a tornado to come!
  • Feb. 28 11 am the County Commission has called an emergency meeting of the group this afternoon at 2pm. The only agenda item is paying a $7600 Court ordered request for the Prosecutor. That's the only official action planned.
  • Feb. 28 11 am This evening at 6pm the  Tourism Committee meets at the radio station. Their goal is to grow existing tourism attractions during the 2011 season.
  • feb 28 11am  Why do Americans choose from just two people to run for president and 50 for Miss America ?   Behind every successful man is his woman. Behind the fall of a successful man is usually another woman.
  • Feb. 28 a 6 am Something weird goin on clickers. It's 67 degrees outside with wind blowing everything about.
  • Feb. 27 p Guy Mullins Rd, Morgan Carr Rd and DeerTrack Acres, you're on a Boil Water Order as of Saturday afternoon. For your own safety, boil it first
  • Feb. 27 p  We've got a 17 year old having a birthday Monday. When you see high school junior Ashleigh Cutler, give her a bunch of grief for getting old.
  • Feb. 27 p Its the people in Libya working hard to bring representative government to their land. With hundreds already killed, it's time for Gadhafie to go.  The tide of change is also warming up in this country where tens of thousands rallied in support of the working person. Trying to restore the middle class may be tough.
  • Feb. 27 p  Last Tuesday Judge Jack Alsop told the Prosecutor's office, you have to come up with $7640.00 to pay off a towing /storage bill. After holding Jamie Morris's vehicles since June 19th without an indictment, the guy wants his stuff back. Since the Prosecutor's office didn't file the paperwork to seize the items, the Prosecutor has to cover the cost of the towing bill.
  • Feb. 27 p Prosecutor Jim Sampled has until Tuesday afternoon to come up with the loot. It's time to turn to the County Commission for a big hand out.
  • Feb. 27 p Why do the taxpayers of Clayberry have to pay up? 'Cause the State Code says so: §60A-7-705. Procedures for forfeiture. (a) (1) Any proceeding wherein the state seeks forfeiture of property subject to forfeiture under this article shall be a civil proceeding. A petition for forfeiture may be filed on behalf of the state and any law-enforcement agency making a seizure under this article by the prosecuting attorney of a county, or duly appointed special prosecutor
  • Feb. 27 p Locally, two stoplights went up this past week around the Hartland bridge. The State Road folks are further restricting the weight on the 100 year old span in an attempt to keep it in the air until a replacement can be built sometime next year. Only problem is, Clayonians don't do well with stop lights. Expecting a long delay, instead of stopping at the red light, we keep on coming... bumper to bumper on t he sagging bridge.
  • Feb. 27 p  Lady bugs are out in force. Stinky little &&%%!! things are everywhere.
  • Feb. 27 p  Since the demise of snow, we've grown some world class potholes around the county. State Road boys have been out filling them up with gravel and fluid but, it ain't doing much to resolve the problem. Two days after application, the fill material is all gone.   In the mean time, sales of PoliGrip are sky rocketing.
  • Feb. 27 p Sunday afternoon, the sun came out and temps went up. Almost short pants weather and none too soon!
  • Feb. 27 p Words of wisdom: Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car
  • Feb. 27 p The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on the list.
  • Feb. 27 p If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.
  • Feb. 27 p We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.
  • Feb. 26 p 1:30  The Town of Clay issued a BOIL WATER ORDER for the Guy Mullins Rd,  Deer Track and Morgan Carr communities due to low water conditions. Boil it first clickers. Never know what's in the bottom of a tank!
  • Feb. 26 a Last night the Lady Panthers came up short 2 points. Having won their other sectional Tournament game earlier in the week, they're off to the Regional Tournament this Wed evening down in Chapmanville. Great!
  • Feb. 26 a Got a backroom full of junk? The Consignment Auction continues tonight at 6pm. Have you "treasures" over at Two Run between 4 and 6pm.
  • Feb. 26 a  World change continues even under some of the harshest conditions in Libya. Maybe it's best not to have the USA involved but moral support from Obama De Bama sure wouldn't hurt one bit. If this trend away from tyrants continues, we really will see a new world order in short order.
  • Feb. 26 a  Waste Waste Waste in the billions!
  • Fen 26 a While talking about Presidents. Just for the record, George Dubbya Bush record of acheivement:  the first President in U.S. history to enter office with a criminal record; invaded and occupied two countries at a continuing cost of over one billion dollars per week; spent the U.S. surplus and effectively bankrupted the U.S. Treasury; shattered the record for the largest annual deficit in U.S. history; set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12-month period; set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a 12-month period; set the all-time record for the biggest drop in the history of the U.S. stock market; in his first year in office, over 2 million Americans lost their jobs and that trend continued every month.
  • Feb. 26 a Now that's a hero!
  • Feb. 25 p  Not going to believe it but, at 2pm today, snow is in the air. $$##!!!!
  • Feb. 25 a With winds roaring thru the county and power blinking off and on, a short update, or at least one update till the electric goes off and stays off
  • Feb. 25 a The Lady Panthers have already secured a spot in the Regional Basketball Tournament. Tonight's 7pm match up at Herbert Hoover will provide their position in the tournament. Come out and support the home team tonight. Go Lady Panthers!

  • Feb. 25 a The lowest paid Superintendent garners $78,000 in Gilmer County.
  • Feb. 25 a  The average Super pay amounts to $ 103,877. 27 W Va counties plan to increase Superintendent pay next year by an average of $6000.00.  One county is providing their top dog a $23,000 increase.
  • Feb. 25 a  Across the state there are over 70 workers in Board offices that earn over $90,000 a year. 15 more earn over $100,000 a year in board offices.
  • Feb. 25 a Not too shabby for the second poorest state in the nation and the 50th worstest performing educational system.
  • Feb. 24 p  Inez Carolyn Ferrebee , see OBITUARY page
  • Feb. 24 a Last night the Lady Panthers had a big win over Herbert Hoover HS.  A Big Clay County delegation was in attendance to cheer on the hometown favorites. The Lady Panthers are now heading to Regional tournament action. Go Lady Panthers
  • Feb. 24 a Today in history:  1886: Thomas Edison married Mina Miller. • Feb. 24 a From the email bag:  With all the negative news coming out of Clay County the past several months we sure should congratulate the Lagy Mustangs of the middle school winning the championship.  They were in a heated battle with the Summersville Lady Bears with the score of 29-27.  It was one of the games where you were biting you finger nails in the second half as the Lady Bears came back and tied our girls.  Our pride and joy came thru with just moments to spare.  We are so proud of you.  These girls have proven themselves over and over again with an undefeated season.      Bud White
  • Feb. 23 late p  County Commission voted this morning to seek funding for one water line extension project for the county. They said after careful consideration, they will seek funding for the $3m Independence Mountain and Pack Fork projects. Everybody else, you're out of the loop  for this grant application cycle.
  • Feb. 23 late p Need a job? One with health insurance and sick leave?  Pays about $18,000 a year to start/ Commissioner Slinky says he can't find anyone in the county that wants a job. even said he checked over at the Pentagon!
  • Feb. 23 late p  The 911 Dispatch Center for Clay (located in Summersville) has an opening right now for one dispatcher. The CCC reported this morning that they would like to hire 2 new dispatchers right now. How about you. Get on the phone and call a County Commissioner and say, Hey I want a good job.
  • Feb. 23 late p To make the place look a little better, the plan is to install colorful hand painted 4 by 4 "quilt" signs around the county. So far Clay Furniture and the Lion's Club folks have agreed to the signs on their buildings.
  • Feb. 23 late p There's money enough to paint and install 8 more of the attractive signs. How about you?  Just call Amanda Moore for a request form.
  • Feb. 23 late p Also from this morning's Commission meeting... for safety reasons, load reduction, looks like the Hartland Bridge will soon be reduced to one lane traffic complete with big concrete barriers and stop lights on each end.
  • Feb. 23 late p Lets see now, they want less weight on the 90 year old span so they line it with heavy concrete barriers weighing tons and then add stop lights to leave vehicles bumper to bumper trying to cross the thing.
  • Feb. 23 late p  Got to love this place!
  • Feb. 23 a Clay County's only locally owned and operated newspaper, The Communicator, is now on news stands across the region and headed for mailboxes across the nation. Darn good reading if you're interested in what's really going on in glorious Clayberry.
  • Feb. 23 a This Wed morning it's cloudy with a drizzle in the air. Better than snow but still not quite the Spring conditions we want.
  • Feb. 23 a Tonight at 6pm the Lady Panthers are in Sectional Tournament action down at Herbert Hoover HS. 'would be a great time to get out and support our high school team. Go Lady Panthers!!
  • Feb. 23 a  Our Middle School Mustang team went down in flames last night in Conference play. Good season for the boys but it's over for this year.
  • Feb. 23 a  Last summer local Jamie Morris was arrested in Kanawha and Clay Counties while in the meth making business. The Maysel arrest resulted in a several of his vehicles being impounded by King Wrecker Service. The trucks and ATVs remain behind locked doors even after a court order said to release em.
  • Feb. 23 a Why still impounded? Glad you asked. King charges an overnight storage fee which has been accumulating since last June. The Morris family tried in vain to take back their items without paying the storage fees in now in the $1000s.
  • Feb. 23 a Yesterday Fran King had her butt dragged into Court by attorney Wayner King who told Judge Jack Alsop , the Franster was violating a court order by not turning over the  vehicles to their rightful owners.
  • Feb. 23 a Turns out the Robe didn't see it that way. Judge Alsop ordered the Prosecutor's office to pay the $7500 storage bill, do so within 5 days, and during those five days, more storage charges are to accumulate.
  • Feb. 23 a Mr Prosecutor, Jim Samples, has a wittle problem. He ain't got that kind of cash budgeted for such purpose.
  • Feb. 23 a It might get worser. In addition to the Jamie Morris holdings, another guy in the arrest, John Amos Morris, has property being held over at King's Wrecker. That stuff is still locked up and will need paid for before being released. The guess is, that additional property storage fee  (around $3500) will also have to come out of the Prosecutor's budget... IE: County Commission funds.
  • Feb. 23 a  Why out of Prosecutor funds. Turns out the arresting Green Shirts could have seized the vehicles and sold them off to cover the bill. They didn't. The Judge had a few words for that lack of action by the Badge.
  • Feb. 23 a Got ta love this place!
  • Feb. 23 a Some in the county think that Jamie Morris and crew will not be prosecuted for the allegations. Prosecutor Samples now has strong financial reasons for following thru with the Court time.
  • Feb. 21 a With the Courthouse closed today, much quieter in Clayberry this morning.

  • Feb. 21 a With new extra duty contracts typed up, the Pentagon gang will vote to rehire all the coaches.
  • Feb. 21 a How about some edumacation..
  • Feb. 21 a House Speaker John Boner proclaims that Obama De Bama added 200,000  Federal jobs since taking office. Answer: NOT TRUE.
  • Feb. 21 a For all of us progressives, where's the most liberal place to live? Glad you asked: The No. 1 most liberal-friendly county, the Caller said, is California’s San Francisco County; followed by Montgomery County, Md., a suburb of the nation’s capital; Northern California’s Marin County; Colorado’s Boulder County; and New York County.
  • Feb. 21 a Lots of Washington talk about cutting the deficit on the backs of working class. Here's the Republicrat spending bill from the House. There is no mention of cutting military spending.
  • Feb. 21 a One thing is for sure. If the elected folks don't reduce military spending, the budget CAN NOT BE BALANCED.
  • Feb. 21 a More edumacation:  Although George Washington's birthday is celebrated on February 22, it is observed as a federal holiday on the third Monday of February. To complicate matters, Washington was actually born on February 11 in 1731! How can that be? During Washington's lifetime, people in Great Britain and America switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar (something most of Europe had done in 1582). As a result of this calendar reform, people born before 1752 were told to add 11 days to their birth dates. Those born between January 1 and March 25, as Washington was, also had to add one year to be in sync with the new calendar. By the time Washington became president in 1789, he celebrated his birthday on February 22 and listed his year of birth as 1732.

  • Feb. 20 a We've seen a bunch of changes in the last seven days or so
  • Feb. 20 a Globally, the Middle East has and is changing at the blink of an eye. Not as easy as in Tunisia and Egypt, but the dominos are falling. The day of non thinking dictators... the days may be numbered.
  • Feb. 20 a How bad does it have to get for citizens to rise up. In Wisconsin thousands marched and protested planned actions of the government.
  • Feb. 20 a  Big promises came from British Petroleum last Spring. Now out of the spotlight, hundreds of millions are owed contractors and there's no check in the pipeline.
  • Feb. 20 a Here at home, locals protested bogus tax rates during the annual Board of Revenue this Feb. Many saw adjustments. Full details in Tuesday's Communicator
  • Feb. 20 a The small band of volunteers, the Buffalo Creek Watershed group, met Thursday and laid out Spring plans for "liming" the Elk tributary to nullify 50 years of mining in the valley. The goal is to restore trout to the watershed.
  • Feb. 20 a Clayberry is full of colorful people. One of those was Buck Taylor who died four days ago. When you saw him coming down the street, you knew you were in for a full hour's worth of Buck reasoning. Arguing with him did little to change his mind. One more piece of color gone.
  • Feb. 20 a Often overlooked.. the Clay Middle School Lady Mustangs won the CWVAC Championship after completing a perfect season. Coach Holcomb's stars include" Payton Lucas with a hustle award; Katelyn Horrocks and Gracen Samples -  All Conference and all Tournament; and McKinzee Barker -  Tournament MVP.
  • Feb. 20 a Way to go Lady Mustangs
  • Feb. 20 a Winter faded from memory as temps reached into the 60s at the end of the week. Short pants. Cars were washed and yard clutter was removed. Well worn snow shovels looked out of place. Even with snow in the forecast this coming week, who cares, Spring is in out sights.
  • Feb. 20 a We've made it through another bad one.
  • Feb. 20 a Communicator comes out Tuesday. Email over your thoughts, comments, classifieds and stuff by Monday mid day.

  •  Feb. 18 a Check out the Big Otter Community Center music schedule over on our ADVISORY page. Fun begins tonight at 7pm
  • Feb. 18 a It didn't go well last night for the Panthers. That's not the case for the Girl's Middle School Basketball team. With a big win last night (26-15), tonight the Lady Mustangs are in the championship game in Braxton County beginning at 8pm.
  • Feb. 18 a Delegate Dave Walker and Dave Perry's Legislative update columns are now over on the ADVSIORY page
  • Feb. 18 a Buck Taylor  spent many of his later years wandering around the streets of Clay. Often he was peed over the actions of the Govt as they confiscated his collection of junk cars. During one Clay Development public meeting, while arguing with his own family members, Badges hauled his butt out of  the building and arrested the guy. Buck died Thursday morning in hospice care.

After years of tournament play, Clay Middle School's Lady Mustangs have a perfect 14-0 season under their belts and are heading to the Braxton Armory tonight for a 6:30pm start in first round tournament action. Go Lady Mustangs.
  • Feb. 17 a Support from the bleachers helps  a bunch. How about you?
  • Feb. 17 a Last night the Panthers put it all over Roane County 75 to 58.
  • Feb. 17 a Closer to home, the CHS Panthers play at home in the LKC tonight at 7:30pm. It's the last home game of the regular season. If a drive to Braxton is too far, how about supporting a much improved Panther team.
  • Feb. 17 a The lead story in The Communicator provides info on the felony charges against Jacob Young stemming from incidents in Roane and Kanawaha Counties.

  • Feb. 17 a Got up this morning expecting to be blown away with  ultra fast connections. Wrong! As a matter of fact, this morning at 7:30am, when the kids have already left for school, DSL speed was actually down a little.
  • Feb. 17 a !!##$$***
  • Feb. 16 p Panthers got whooped last night by Braxton County.
  • Feb. 16 p With the season all but over, CCHS B Ball continues tonight at 7:30pm  and Thursday evening. Come out and support of the home team.
  • Feb. 16 a Very quiet in Clayberry. Other than wondering when the last Murder Mountain single wide will get torched,  we're talking about the weather.
  • Feb. 16 p  While others sit with their thumbs up their butt. Not so with the Watershed Group which is sporting a brand new web site.
  • Feb. 16 a  The Hurherald web site did a good job fleshing out the latest rankings from the Kid's Count annual survey. Yelp, County Clay is right where we've always been. Take a peek.

  • Feb. 15 a  111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321

  • Feb. 13 p  Still haven't done anything nice for the sweetie? Carol's Restaurant is cooking up a Valentine's Dinner Monday from 4 to 7pm. Dinner out goes a long way when you want that new deer rifle, four wheeler, boat motor...
  • Feb. 13 p  Just one banner of a week gone by....
  • Feb. 13 p After three decades of tyranny, citizens in Egypt took control of their country and forced the replacement of its leaders. We the People made the difference in that Arab country.
  • Feb. 13 p As the work week opened last Monday three businesses felt the sting of local thugery. Busted windows and stolen goods cost a bunch. Brazen was the word on the street as the thug entered two Main Street stores by smashing thru glass front doors.
  • Feb. 13p  Many Nebo residents attended a mid week Commission meeting pleading for water service for their Northern Clayberry neighborhood. Residents from other areas also cried for service. No decision made in public but sure sounded like Lizemore area communities will get the nod for grant dollar application.
  • Feb. 13 p  What this Commission and ALL others before them have said, be patient, the 20th Century will finally make it to this county. What they should be telling is the truth. The truth is, much of the county will never be served. The truth is, the cost per customer is to great. Doubt if the truth will ever be  told the public
  • Feb. 13 p  Much of Murder Mountain burned this past week. Fire crews were dispatched twice to structure fires on top of Oil Field Road. We reported a common feeling in the county, the fires had done what law enforcement has been unable to accomplish after a decade of trying.
  • Feb. 13 p Boy oh boy did the hate emails come in.
  • Feb. 13 p Since we've peed off some already, how about a little more.  Without gun shots, murders, stolen goods galore, and drugs, property values in the Ovapa area may go up a bunch!
  • Feb. 13 p Snow and ice kept local schools closed all of Thursday. They got to sleep in an extra couple hours on Tuesday. They loved it. Parents didn't.
  • Feb. 13 p  Over in Pocahantas County, Frontier Tele announced the doubling of DSL internet speeds beginning Feb. 17th. Additional speed will be added two weeks later.
  • Feb. 13 p Additional capacity? Yes. In Pocahantas and Clay Counties, Frontier oversold their system. With too many folks trying to use the tiny pipeline, everything slowed to a snail's pace when it worked at all. What they're mostly doing is moving some of the customers off overloaded switches to areas of less congestion.
  • Feb. 13 p The reason for all that out of county stuff is, those Pocahantas changes are SUPPOSE to increase our DSL speed to something closer to promised rates.
  • Feb. 13 p  Keep your fingers crossed for now.
  • Feb. 13 p Winter broke this past weekend. Pale pasty white arms were seen Saturday and Sunday as heavy coats were left in closets. Temps raised into the 50s on Sunday. Mud dried up. Cars were washed. Kids tracked mud unto freshly cleaned floors.

  • Feb. 12 p Once you take care of those duties, then it's income tax time.  "U.S. taxpayers and businesses spend about 6.1 billion hours a year complying with the filing requirements of the Internal Revenue code and that figure does not include the millions of additional hours that taxpayers must spend when they are required to respond to IRS notices or audits,"
  • Feb. 12 p  World change, certainly Middle East change is in progress.  All our bombs and billions had nothing to do with the steps toward democracy. It's the people. What fired em up was the Wiki Leak disclosures on fraud and lies by government leadership.
  • Feb. 12 p First came Tunisia. On Friday, the people forced the USA backed dictator from Egypt.
  • Feb. 12 p Across the creek, things are warming up in Yemen and Libya, other American backed tyrannies. In both, things will be much bloodier.
  • Feb. 12 p  When things get bad enough, it's always the people on the street that force the change. Takes time but change can happen any and everywhere including right here in corporate America.
  • Feb. 11 p Happy sun filled Friday.
  • Feb. 11 p Last night the Panthers put it all over Calhoun, 73 to 27. It's only the team's fourth win but What A Blow Out Win!!

  • Feb. 9 YaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaHooooooooooooo time again.
  • Feb. 9 late p  Shortly after 7 pm tonight  a structure fire was reported at the Young house on Murder Mountain. Within minutes, fire crews went roaring over to the ridge top crime center.
  • Feb. 9 late p Around 7:25, the structure at the top of the hill was fully engulfed. Fire trucks headed back home.
  • Feb. 9 late p What law enforcement hasn't been able to do for years , a fire may have done for the county in a matter of minutes.
  • Feb. 9 late p  Just when we thought winter was behind us, it ain't. Snow started coming again this afternoon  making roads tricky to negotiate. Only about an inch or so on the ground but man oh man, it got slicky.
  • Feb. 9 late p While we complain about slow poke or none existent internet service, the majority of Clayberry live without safe dependable water service. This morning more than 60 residents showed up for a hearing on possible funding of water line extensions in the county. Engineers presented two ready to go projects.
  • Feb. 9 late p  Possible funding may be stretching it a bit. There's around $17m in Federal grant funds available statewide. Either of the two projects would take about $3m each. That's a lot of state to cover with so few dollars. Still the people came out in support of water service in their respective neighborhoods.
  • Feb. 9 late p   Those in attendance were passionate about their needs. Story after story came. Many of the possible areas have waited for years, decades. During that time, wanta be politicians promised, elect me and you'll get wa  wa.
  • Feb. 9 late p  County Commission will decide which project to apply for sometime next month.
  • Feb. 9 late p Federally funded anything is expensive. By the time you pay for attorneys, engineers, bond holders, govt oversight agencies and follow govt mandates, out of a $1m, you got very little.
  • Feb. 9 late p One thing was mentioned today that could be done. They're called self help projects where residents build their own water systems and then turn it over to a local PSD. Much cheaper and much quicker they are but, that requires a local initiative and action.
  • Feb. 9 late p That's something Clayberry doesn't have much of.
  • Feb. 9 a Happy Hump Day Wednesday morning to one and all. The Communicator made it out the door yesterday afternoon. If you're interested in what's going on in and around County Clay, The Communicator is the newspaper for you. Our front page above the fold story covers the arrest of Jacob Young and buddies.
  • Feb. 9 a Tuesday afternoon the God of Winter couldn't decide what to do. We went from bright sunshine to heavy blasts of snow. Fortunately, it didn't stick and we avoided a potentially dangerous situation. Good.
  • Feb. 9 a  Civil rights and democracy are at the heart of the protests in Egypt. Under the direction of Dubbya and continuing right to today, America's personal rights were cut back with the Patriot Act. Serious breaches in basic search and seizure are common in this country and all the while, we have paid little attention.
  • Feb. 9 a Yesterday the House voted down extending the Patriot Act. Look for another vote before the end of this month but for now, at least a few thinking Congressmen are rethinking a dangerous trend. By the way, Capito and Rahall voted to extend the thing.
  • Feb. 9 a Poll after poll shows this country is in favor of legalizing pot. Why hasn't the law changed? Hitlary Clinton spoke the truth when she said, there's just too much money in it!  Think how many lawyers, judges, badges, and prison guards could be eliminated with such a change.
  • Feb. 8  4:31 am Clay County Schools are on a two hour delay this morning. There's about an inch of snow covering the ground at this time. Go back to bed.
  • Feb. 7 late p  We're busy typing the next edition of the Communicator. No updates til we get it out the door Tuesday afternoon. In the mean time, bait.....
  • Feb. 7 late p Clay Furniture, the Farm Store and a laundromat were targets of vandals around 3am Monday morning. Details in the rag.
  • Feb. 7 late p  The full work up on Jacob Young,  Big Otter Elem's $12000 electric bill,  and a bunch more but you got to pay 70 cents for that !
  • Feb. 6 p What a last seven days.
  • Feb. 6 p Holding together, young people remained committed to change in Egypt. What our bombs and billions couldn't do, the people themselves are standing up and demanding leaders that don't work for the people instead of themselves and corporations. Turning off communications didn't even slow em down. Our government is once caught sitting on their thumbs and unable to influence in spite of the billions spent.
  • Feb. 6 p Who knows, maybe some day right here at home the people will realize the same and rise up in search of caring leadership and a strong democracy.
  • Feb. 6 p  CAEZ met this past week. As for installing septic and completing the lodge building over at the campground.. no progress , no nothing
  • Feb. 6 p In the latest Communicator came an interesting article on our County Assessor not keeping public record books accurate and up to date. Seems like if they're going to pay to print records, those same records should reflect true assessments and tax dollars. In several ways, those cooked land books affect you when it comes to sell or buy property. Loan approvals take into consideration stuff like tax rates and next door values.
  • Feb. 6 p This was a week for taxpayers to get their tax rates reduced. No one, not one person went before the Commission with such a request.
  • Feb. 6 p  For a dozen years the Tommy Young Sr Murder Murder Mountain empire robbed and looted this and many other counties. Sr had two sons, Jr and the youngest, Jacob. Sr and Jr are now behind bars awaiting sentencing.
  • Feb. 6 p Four days ago, 19 year old Jacob Young and a side kick were arrested and jailed for crime after crime of larceny. Maybe with the last of the hierachy off the street, Clayberry will return to something we've been away from for over a decade, peace and quiet. If it weren't for the lame brain politicians, sure would cripple the newspaper business!
  • Feb. 6 p  Our lead economic development agency, the BDA met Thursday evening. There they feeblily voted to spend taxpayer dollars on growing our behind the times tourism economy.
  • Feb. 6 p  Sadly, the Lady Panthers got beat by Braxton.
  • Feb. 6 p Our Jr Senator, Joe Manchin, stopped by the Courthouse on Friday. For nearly three hours, his questions and responses were tailored to fit the conservative crowd. His Republicrat leanings were well received by the 50 or so in attendance.
  • Feb. 6 p Whenever big wigs come to town, our Sheriff is always right beside em sucking up. Not so with Smokin Joe. The Top Badge was nowhere to be seen.
  • Feb. 6 p Mid day Saturday, local grocery stores were shopped out of essentials when word spread of another winter storm coming our way. THis time, it didn't happen.
  • Feb. 6 p With Dish network offering free Starz movies this month, we have something to do while we wait for Spring.
  • Feb. 4 p Morning post has been corrected to reflect a 2 to 4pm visit by Smokin Joe Manchin at the Courthouse.
  • Feb. 4 p County Commission was ready to hear property owner tax complaints this morning during the Board of Review session. One problem, no one came. Everybody in Clayberry must be happy campers.
  • Feb. 4 a Tried to get a post on last night but the internet was so slow, such was impossible. Sorry
  • Feb. 4 a Delegate Dave Perry's update from under the Gold Dome is now posted over on the ADVISORY page.
  • Feb. 4 a Feb. is the month taxpayers have a chance to protest bogus tax rates. The County Commission has the power to reduce property taxes if citizen info warrants it.
  • Feb. 4 a So far, no one has showed up for  a Bd of Review to even try for a reduction.
  • Feb. 4 a Now keep this quiet clickers but, Smokin Joe is coming to Clayberry this morning. No one is saying a word about the visit. Not an email, not a phone call, zipo. Senator Manchin will be at the Courthouse between 2 and 4pm today. Show up and who knows, you might even get some free munchies.
  • Feb. 4 a Three months ago a small group of volunteers formed with the expressed purpose of growing and supporting existing tourism events in the county. The group plans to mentor those wanting help and helping them increase viability with better signs, brochures, advertising, web sites and reduce scheduling conflicts so all can thrive.
  • Feb. 4 a Two months ago, the BDA agreed to take the Tourism Committee under their wing as a standing committee.
  • Feb. 4 a Last night the Business Development Authority met. With Fran absent from duty, Tommy Fitzwater ran the gathering. After a presentation by Tourism Committee rep Beth Hubbard, the BDA voted to provide funding ($2000) for the group's effort.
  • Feb. 4 a Looks like Clayberry has once again started down a path of sustainability. How nice!
  • Feb. 4 a    A tough looking group of bikers were riding when they saw a good looking  girl about to jump off a bridge so they stop.  The leader, a big burly man, gets off his bike and says, "What are you doing?"  "I'm going to commit a suicide," she says.  While he did not want to appear insensitive, he didn't want to miss an  opportunity he asked "Well, before you jump, why don't you give me a Kiss?"  So, she does and it was a long, deep lingering kiss.

  •    After she's finished, the biker out of breath and says, "Wow! That was the best Kiss I have ever had. That's a real talent you are wasting. You could be famous. Why are you committing suicide?" "My parents don't like me dressing up like a girl "
  • Feb. 3 . a  The Business Development Authority meets tonight, in the Courthouse, 5:30pm. Free entertainment second to none! Bring your own popcorn.
  • Feb. 3 a CCCHS CLass or 1991.. see ADVISORY page
  • Feb. 3 a  Everybody must be happy with high tax rates and bogus numbers. Feb. is the month taxpayers can ask the CCC to reduce bogus amounts. How about you. Board of Review dates are over on  the ADVISORY page.
  • Feb. 3 a  A couple days back we mentioned the now defunct Golden Heart agency short changing former employees by not providing IRS W-2 forms. A couple of the folks have emailed to say, those much needed forms are now coming their way. Great!
  • Feb. 3 a the deadline for filing for municipal office was last Saturday. We've got the full line up of office seekers in the newest Communicator. Of the current leaders, only Jerry Stover decided not to seek reelection. A bunch of new faces will be running in the June Town election.
  • Feb. 3  a Tuesday evening Town Council met.....
  • Feb. 3 a Council rented the old chevy dealership building over a year ago while the new wa wa plant is being built. They said they could afford it and it wouldn't be too expensive. Last month's heating bill was $1300!
  • Feb. 3 a Lisa Rhodes from Maysel addressed the group seeking repairs to the Town water line in her neighborhood. During her presentation she apprised all that maintenance man Terry Traub had told her more than once that he had no plans to make the repair.
  • Feb. 3 a Almost immediately you could see the hackles go up on Mayor Brown's neck. Brown told Rhodes that had asked Traub to be in attendance and he would have a talk with the guy at first chance.
  • Feb. 3 a Just about as soon as that was spoken, Terry came thru the door. You could feel the tension between Brown and Traub post haste.
  • Feb. 3 a Before Traub was given a chance to explain his side of the story, Brown cut him off and demanded repairs. Traub: Why did you ask me to come???? This is a set up!!!! You won't even hear me!!!! With that exchange, Terry Traub left the building.
  • Feb. 3 a   You could feel the fire!
  • Feb. 3 a   Also from Tuesday, during the CAEZ meeting.....
  • Feb. 3 a Interested in when the septic system will be installed and operating over at the BC&G campground? No time soon. The needed DEP permits are not signed
  • Feb. 3 a Capitol Resource Agency closed it's Clay County office in early January. One day, without notice, Poof, the fired two locals and locked the door. During the CAEZ meeting, the OK was given for CRA to have a one day per week office in the CAEZ building.
  • Feb. 3 a Clayberry gets second handed often. The CRA is another example of it. If it weren't for the utter poverty in this county, CRA wouldn't be able to even exist. Still, we get one day per week service.
  • Feb. 2 p   Thelma Cecelia Murphy Neal, formerly of Bickmore, see OBITUARY page
  • Feb. 2 p   Mary Ann Stone, 58, of Lizemores, see OBITUARY page
  • Feb. 2 a Edna Virginia Bowles, 88, of Procious, see OBITUARY page
  • Feb. 2 a After a 7 day delay,  Clay County's only locally owned and operated newspaper, The Communicator, made it to the news stands. It's a pretty good one this time around. Our lead story provides coverage from  recent School Board gatherings on equalizing coach salaries. After years of disparity, corrections are coming. So far, they've tossed all coaching contracts out the door.
  • Feb. 2 a One of the investigative articles deals with out of date public tax books.
  • Feb. 2 a Feb. is tax review month before the County Commission. Have you looked at your tax statements. Did you receive a notice of tax increase?
  • Feb. 2 a Here's a dirty little secret. If your tax base is increased by less than $1000, no notice is given! Say, last year, you paid $100.00. This year they want $800. That's quite a jump and no notice is required by law. Be warned.
  • Feb. 2 a The local radio station is a platform to empower the citizens of the county with a voice to be heard. Over the years many kids have been given the chance to do programming.
  • Feb. 2 a  Glenn Boatwright is a CCHS senior with a goal of being an ESPN broadcaster. 101.7 FM is providing a Saturday night time slot for the guy to grow behind the mic.
