December 2008

  • Dec 31 a  Brooks F. Ramsey, 84, see OBITUARY page
  • Dec 31 a  Johnny Allen Smith, 54, see OBITUARY page
  • Dec 31 a What are you doing for New Year's Eve? The party place to be, also the only one we know of in the county, is over at the radio station in downtown Clay. See EVENTS page.
  • Dec 31 a Wear your long underwear and come out and have some fun. Clayberry ball drops at midnight sharp. Times Square ain't got nothing on us!
  • Dec 31 a   We're polishing off another year of Clayberry. Thanks for all your patronage and support in 2008.
  • Dec 30 p  John Paul Sparks, 80, see OBITUARY page
  • Dec 30 p Lois Jean Sampson, 62, see OBITUARY page
  • Dec 30 p After Carl Wilson's passing, wifey Lois moved to Parkersburg to be closer to her kids. The ace cub reporter received a get well card from Lois this week. In that correspondence came brags on her open heart surgery leaving an even bigger zippa and even longer recovery time. Brag Brag Brag!
  • Dec 30 p By the way, the ace cub reporter is now out and about for a couple hours at a hitch. A few more weeks, and he should be back to good... or bad, which ever way you see it.
  • Dec 30 p When you see Jackie Sizemore Wed., tell him Happy Birthday!
  • Dec 30 p We mentioned job opportunities yesterday. So far over 20 Clayonians have signed up to be tested for the coming Census jobs. 5000 hires will be made through out West Virginia. Why not you? Testing continues in Jan 09
  • Dec 30 p Clay County Housing Authority (CCHA) owns High Street Apartments and Maysel Manor, both low income housing units. For years Encore Management has managed the units for the CCHA. For about as a long a time, Encore has come under fire for absolute dismal performance.
  • Dec 30 p Back a few months ago, the Authority ayed a no confidence vote and agreed  never to sign another contract with Encore. They went about trying to find some other company to provide the management services without success. No one wants anything to do with Clay County's housing units.
  • Dec 30 p  A letter was sent to the CCHA last month warning, if you don't sign the management agreement, the Feds will put the unit in default proceedings.
  • Dec 30 p During Monday's Commission meeting, members of the CCHA asked the big three (and soon to be Commissioner, Mike Pierson) for oversight on signing an agreement with a bogus outfit. Consensus from the CCC:  You have more bargaining power and little other choice but to sign the agreement.
  • Dec 30 p  Look for more years of bad living conditions, shoddy record keeping, and unchecked waste at High Street and Maysel Manor.
  • Dec 29 LATE  From the email bag:   There is a lost male dog in the Maysel area.  It appears to me a Rottweiler mix.  It is wearing a collar and seems friendly.  It showed up Christmas night.  Please call 587-4031 or check around the old meat shop as soon as possible because the dogs I have are not making good playmates with this dog
  • Dec 29 LATE p  Happy belated Birthdays to Tracy Sizemore, Emily Moore, Trina Drake, Jordan Brown
  • dec 29 LATE p Don't forget to check the JOBS page for part time work.
  • Dec 29 p  Clay County was isolated from the rest of the free world when telephone and internet lines were severed Sunday afternoon. Sometime around 3pm today Verizon Tele Co. repair crews patched things back together and we resumed our position as the Great Nation of Clay. Around 5100 customers were affected by the outage.
  • Dec 29 p Donald Bradley McLaughlin "Brad", of Clay, see OBITUARY page
  • Dec 26 p George L. Humphrey, 89, see OBITUARY page
  • Dec 26 a  The day after Christmas should be one of getting back to normal, taking another look at presents and replacing batteries. That wasn't the case this morning in downtown Clay at 80 Carr Street.
  • Dec 26 a Emergency responders went to work responding to a carbon monoxide poisoning call. Other counties were called to assist with paramedic support.

  • Dec 21 p LATE  9:54, about 18 degrees,  from the scanner: vehicle went over Hartland bridge and unto the railroad tracks.  entrapment
  • Dec 21 Late Within 10 minutes all emergency service personnel were on site.
  • Dec 21 Late p  from the email bag:  Missing Dogs, one is a black female with long hair her name is bear and the other one is a black male Rot waller he has no tail his name is Samson we miss bear a lot she is a good dog and samson's owner misses him very much they might be in the lizemores area. please call 632-2163 if you see them
  • Dec 21 p No weekend wrap up this time around. After getting The Communicator out the door on Friday, it's time for a little rest. With temps turning chillier, maybe another piece of fudge and a nap.
  • Dec 21 p No we don't know if Sheriff Holcomb doled out Christmas bonuses to his staff but on Thursday at 3pm, he said he was "still wooling it around". See Communicator for details
  • Dec 20 a The Communicator made it out the door Friday afternoon, Great reading on every page. Each year a government agency comes up with a different name and tries to hand out Christmas bonuses. This year it's Sheriff Randy Holcomb calling the one time treasures, cost of living checks.
  • Dec 20 a  Last night the CCHS Panthers put it all over the Wirt Tigers 73 to 67. Nice home game opener!
  • Dec 20 a Men, today is the day you have to go shopping. Don't put it off or you will be sorry big time.
  • Dec 19 a No updates until we get the paper out the door around 4pm.
  • Dec 19 a Tonight's the first home game for the Panthers. 7:30 is tip off. 101.7FM plans to air each home game. They still need four more sponsors to make it happen. How about you? Dial 587-8353

  • Dec 18 a Happy 18th birthday Faith Wayne
  • Dec 18 a  As we go thru life, things are picked up along the way. First some things learned in the last 10 days
  • Dec 19 a Men have dreams of pretty young nurses and sponge bathes. Not so the case when being prepped for for a heart cath and those hotties have razors in their hands working away at your crotch. Worser still when you hear them giggling down there.
  • Dec 19 a Even the most loving, caring wifey doesn't want to hear ANY nurse dream stories. None!
  • Dec 19 a It's never good when the EKG comes back and the car provider says Uh oh.
  • Dec 19 a  When the primary care giver says they''ll provide a heart doctor reference and then doesn't for seven days, there's  an even bigger problem.
  • Dec 19 a Heart attacks don't have to feel like a jab to the chest. Sometimes there more like a a heavy pressure on the chest.
  • Dec 19 a A few hours after by pass surgery and they stand you on your head while rushing you back to ICU, once again, not a good day.
  • Dec 19 a What hospitals call oatmeal can also be used like putty to hold those cables away from you and up against the headboard.
  • Dec 19 a Seven days of hospital food makes you sicker. Calls to CAMC CEO David Ramsey with suggestions go without a reply of any kind.
  • Dec 19 a Chest tubes hurt like H when being removed. Almost as bad as removal of Mr One Eye's cath. Nurses appear to grin when removing Winky Caths. I think they count how long the male sucks in wind.
  • Dec 19 a It's nice to have visitors during hospital stays. With all the bridges burnt by Mel Gibson Look Alike over the years, it's always a good thang to check the white thermo water bottle for rat poisioning.
  • Dec 19 a Dogs are happy to see you after being away for 7 days. When 60 pound Basset hounds jump on your 45 stainless steel staples, the happiness leaves quickly.
  • Dec 19 a Thanks for the visits, calls, emails and well wishes. They are appreciated.
  • Dec 19 a  Deadline for The Communicator is today at 6pm. Email your stuff over ASAP. For businesses wanting Christmas ads, get em quick. Note: If you emailed over stuff for Classifieds last week and don't see the listing online, please resend. Ditto for Events and ADVISORY postings.
  • Dec 19 a   Word is getting around from Tuesday, one CCHS male kicked another in the goods only to have sore gonad #1 respond with an equally well placed kick to the crotch of #2. The rumble ended up with sore nuts #1 stabbing #2 in the thigh. Serious business with both in deep doo doo and sore manhood.
  • Dec 19 a Not sure what days the Courthouse will be closed for the Christmas Holiday. Smokin Joe gave the green light holiday time on Dec 24th at noon and the 25th.   Some at the Courthouse want Friday the 26th added "unofficially" as a paid time off. Since the CCC did NOT vote on either scenario, and have meetings planned before the holiday, no one knows for sure if the extra day will be given.
  • Dec 19 a  The County Commission meeting slated for the 24th has been rescheduled for the 29th at 10am.
  • Dec 19 a Men, this is the weekend to head to Wal Mart. Shopping at the Family Dollar or Go Mart on the 24th never works out. Never
  • Dec 16 late The After a nine day stay at CAMC the Mel Gibson Look Alike returned to Clayberrry Tuesday afternoon. With high octain producing arteries installed, AW will be working on a slow poke schedule until he gets the hospital vittles out of his system.
  • Dec 16 Late p Will provide the play by play ASAP but will get events, obits, advisories current first. The Communicator is right around the corner. Get your stuff emailed over for insertion.
  • Dec 18 Late p  CCHS's basketball season is now underway. Non profit 101.7 FM wants to sportscast all 20 home games. To do that , they need some sponsors. Sponsorship is $50 and you get mentions four times during and after each game. Great way to get your message out to the world and insure our kids get good air time.
  • Dec 18 Late p Volunteer sportscasters this year include: TG Griffith, Josh Shamblin, Dale  Mullins and Nada Waddell.
  • Dec 18 Late p  Dial the station 5878353 before noon daily  if you can help out. First game is Friday night. Go Panthers!
  • Dec 16 Look at Advisories page for School Board Opinion from WV Ethics Commission
  • Dec 15  Friday evening, December 12, around 6:40 - 6:45 p.m. a car went through the stop sign at Two Run, did a donut, headed on into the town of Clay where it hit a parked truck across from the courthouse, and then left the scene of the accident.  Anyone with information regarding this car, such as color, make, driver, etc., please contact Greg at 651-4560 or email us and will get it to him.

  • Dec 11  County Commission was in session Wednesday at 10am notable from the meeting the Assessor hired two people Robert L Dorsey III at 11 bucks a hour and Bobbie Jo Taylor at 9 bucks a hour.  From what I understand they maybe bought the land next door from fire dept we are not sure. Well you can tell When Commissioner Triplett is not at a meeting. No discussion on bills all approved for payment. You never know what some office’s buy when you don’t look closely at bills.
  • Dec 11   Leonard Williams told the Go-Mart and Tudor’s crowd he if officially retired as of January 1st 2009 from Elk Power Company.
  • Dec 11 Just learned the Sheriff Randy Holcomb wants’ to give his employee’s Christmas Bonuses. This is against the law everywhere but Clayberry.
  • Dec 11 The had a Christmas dinner at Courthouse yesterday and was well attended by the county. So much for it being a Courthouse employee’s and family dinner.
  • Dec 10 pm  We have an update on the ace cub reporter.  While many thought he was full of S****, turns out it was peanut butter and lard. The Mel Gibson look  alike under goes heart by pass surgery   Thursday at 11am. Very limited updates for another week or so.
  • Dec 8 pm The Mel Gibson look alike is real sick. He in Charleston Hospital getting checked out. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. No more posts unless it's important.

  • Dec 7 11:26p No updates until we get the Communciator out the door sometime around 4pm Monday afternoon. You're on your own clickers
  • Dec 7  p  This second week of buck season, Clayberry remained quiet.
  • Dec 7 p Monday morning, without public notice, new to politics Mike Pierson was sworn in as County Commissioner. He officially takes his seat Jan 1st.
  • Dec 7 p Town Council scuttled its monthly meeting on Tuesday for lack of interest
  • Dec 7 p During the CAEZ meeting, it became public that the long standing grass roots group was forming a new group called the Economic Development Authority for Clay County. Sure sounds similar to the  the purpose of the bumbling Business Development Authority
  •  Dec 7 p Not so long ago Jody Miller stood before Judge Facemire. Miller was pale and weak. H had been without meds for Lupus while sentenced to jail. A compassionate Facemire knew the jail system was unable to handle the medical needs and turned him lose on home confinement.
  • Dec 7 p This past week dumbarss Jody Miller ripped off his home confinement leglet, put stolen plates on a vehicle and skid addled for Florida. He made it to Georgia before getting caught for speeding and arrested for violating home confinement rules. He's in big trouble.
  • Dec 7 p When he goes before Ric Facemire this time, he's in big trouble and rightly so. What  a dumbarss
  • Dec 7 p  Mid week, our border county Calhoun made the news with a bank robbery.
  • Dec 7 p Town Council coverage on this web site and in the Communicator has been steady since a new Council and Mayor came on board 18 months ago. Center stage for us has been Council person and now Recorder Llyn Drake. Mid week we had a chance to sit down and talk with Drake. She was not a happy camper!
  • Dec 7 p Drake feels out coverage has not been fair and slanted toward Mayor Jack Brown. We have all but beat her in the ground with our coverage she says.
  • Dec 7 p In response, guilty as charged. During meetings she has come across as greedy for more power and $$$ and with a self serving interest foremost.
  • Dec 7 p Details in Monday's Communicator.
  • Dec 7 p under sunny skies but ice cold, Friday afternoon, Town crews went to work setting up Christmas trees at the  Courthouse. With street decorations already in place and the Courthouse trees soon to be lit up, the best season of all has returned to our little hamlet.
  • Dec 6 p Clayberry gets its fair share of the white stuff each winter. When it comes, we go crazy. Saturday afternoon we received a couple inches of snow. Immediately everyone got out on the roads. It might have been for no reason at all, but we had to go. Even with bald tires and other faulty equipment, by gummy, we got out on the white top and preceded to go in every ditch imaginable. It's just who we are.
  • Dec 6 p Without notice, most events shut down due to the scant snow fall.
  • Dec 6 p Saturday night around 10pm, crackling over the scanner from DOH salt truck officials" Get back on the main routes only.
  • Dec 7 p Not many left but, old timers are remembering 1941 and Pearl Harbour .  The disastrous attack on America is just something in history books for most. If we don't remember our history.....
  • Dec 7 p  With a couple inches of snow on the ground Sunday and snow flurpies in the air, most of us kept our feet propped up near the stove and flipped thru the channels trying to find something worth watching on the boob tube.
  • Dec 7 p another week under our belts and another year almost complete.
  • Dec 6 p  How cold was it last night? So cold the grass was crunchy. Deep breathing made your nose holes slam shut.
  • Dec 6 p  With snow coming down and more in the offing, how about some diversions.
  • Dec 6p New free music is available at this site. Most are independent artists and trying to get a  break. Thanks DN for the link.
  • Dec 6p  Here's a site with tons of hard to find historical tunes from way back in the 78 rpm record days. Both offer free downloads and appear to be legal enough, the music police won't be knocking at your door.
  • Dec 6 p With snow predicamentated, the turn out my be light for tonight's consignment auction at Two Run. Good chance for cheap deals. Auctioneer Marlyn Starcher commented during the BDA meeting, a new vendor was coming  with first class products. He showed a set of brand new real leather cowboy boots as an example of the goods.
  • Dec 6 p Miss West Virginia and Santa are coming to town. Check out the ADVISORY page for more
  • Dec 6 p Communicator comes out Monday afternoon around 4pm
  • Dec 6p Check out the EVENTS page for fun stuff to do this weekend.
  • Dec 5 a  Thelma Deloris "Sis" Dearman, 80, of Procious, see OBITUARY page
  • Dec 5 a  Judith C. Landers, 60, of Lizemores , see OBITUARY page
  • Dec 5 a Dortha Lee Auxier, 81, see OBITUARY page
  • Dec 5 a From the email bag: Lost in the Hansford Fork area, male Boxer, fawn with black mask and a white chest. Has a Harley Davidson collar on. If you have any information about my dog please call 587-7538
  • Dec 5 a The Communicator comes out Monday afternoon. Deadline for juicy chatters, classifieds, articles, and anything else you can think of is tonight at midnight.
  • Dec 5 a Our Constitution requires a President to be native born. Some are questioning that requirement and whether Obama De Bama meets constitutional muster. The US Supreme Court may lend an ear today.
  • Dec 5 a Last night's BDA meeting was a bust. They met over at the unheated State Road garage and precided to freeze their hineys off. Czar Fran King was nowhere to be seen.
  • Dec 5 a Auctioneer Marlin Starcher addressed the BDA. He told them, to make the weekly auction doable, they were changing the rules. Beginning this Saturday night, they will add a "10% buyer's premium" to each sell plus reduce the 25% ( 20% to the auctioneer company and 5% to the concessioners) down to 15%. Those selling concessions will no longer receive the 5% portion of the proceeds.
  • Dec 5 a What's that mean? You spend a dollar, you have to pay an additional 10 cents (10%). Starcher feels the change in payouts will draw better quality merchandise.
  • Dec 5 a Although the gun group unleashed everything in its arsenal to defeat Barack Obama and dozens of down ticket gun-control candidates, it lost by a margin as historic as the war chest it opened in an attempt to convince voters that Democrats were mortal enemies of the Second Amendment. Despite expending nearly $7 million in a national fear campaign, NRA-endorsed candidates lost 80 percent of their races against gun-control candidates
  • Dec 4 a Last month, BDA Chair Fran King cracked the whip and gave committee assignments to each Boardster. She told em what she wanted, when the task was to be done, and all but said, get to work or don't come back.
  • Dec 4 a It's been 30 days and the Business Development Authority meets at 5pm tonight in the Commission room. Big long agenda is posted detailing all the assignments from last month. We'll see if anything was accomplished during the last 30 days.
  • Dec 4 a Louisiana has displaced Mississippi as the unhealthiest U.S. state. And... West Virginia isn't even mentioned as coming in near the bottom. It's time to celebrate with another Twinkle and RC.
  • Dec 4 a The rest of the world is catching up to Clayberry's top spot in Food Stamp usage. In Sept., 31.8 million Americans were on the program. Here in the land of little, 80% of our kids are on free or reduced lunch programs.
  • Dec 4 a And we have a few more disbarred attorneys.
  • Dec 4 a Getting closer to Christmas men. get the wifey over to the screen and check out these cool gift ideas.
  • Dec 4 a Buying a digital camera this month? Confused on terms and what to buy? Check out  Popular Mechanics online.
  • Dec 4  a
  • Dec 3 p What was Andy Taylor's great grandfather's name.... Seth. Thanks for all that participated in this morning's online Q/A
  • Dec 3 p We've been linking a WV Ethics Commission opinion that appears to limit School Board members' and their spouses being employed in the same system. That would affect Boardsters Ric Tanner and Jim Dawson
  • Dec 3 p Got a call from Asst. Somber Super Kenneth Tanner today. He said that Ric had inquired about our postings. Kenneth Tanner said we've got it all wrong. In essence: True the WV Supreme Court said no to having a spouse in the same system with a hubby School Board member BUT BUT BUT, State Code 61-10-15 was revised AFTER  that decision. He went on to say that the issue we raised was settled a long time ago.
  • Dec 3 p  According to Kenneth, the Ethics Commission decision we referenced relates to County Assessors ONLY and that assessors are not covered by that exemption in 61-10-15. AKA: Assessors cannot have a hubby or wife in their employ.
  • Dec 3 p  We went back to see when the State Code was revised, before or after the Supreme Court decision. Can't find squat! The Ethics Commission does not issue opinions for private citizens, only elected officials. We're private citizens.
  • Dec 3 p We stand corrected. Ric can go back to being School Boardster Ric Tanner.
  • Dec 3 p In the way of updates....
  • Dec 3 p The Central Appalachia Empowerment Zone (CAEZ) was formed during the Clinton administration to empower private citizens (give them the $$$) in the most blighted areas of the country. 14 years ago the organizational committee thought they would be able to grab $40m for the five county service district in the CAEZ. Didn't happen. Instead, about $3m came to their group. That was 13 years ago.
  • Dec 3 p With changes in DC, the entire concept of empowering locals was disbanded after 10 years of mediocre performance. Although still operating under the same by laws, the CAEZ, set asides for the CAEZ, or other benefits, are now history.
  • Dec 3 p During the CAEZ eco dev committee meeting last night, much time was spent discussing and voting to form a completely new group separate from the grass roots, elected by the citizens, non profit organization.
  • Dec 3 p If everything goes as planned, soon, Clay County, maybe other counties too, would be served by two economic development groups if you count the Business Development Authority as a working organization.
  • Dec 3 p Assurances were provided the peanut gallery, that life would go on with the CAEZ as we know it and the grass roots effort would continue.
  • Dec 3 p  Still scratching our heads, a big Hmmmmmmmmmmm
  • Dec 3 p  The Library Board also met last night. During a special meeting a couple weeks ago, the group narrowed down the pile of Library Director resumes; and, guidelines were set up for the interview process. From this latest meeting: those being considered for the job have been contacted. That's all but one that Library Chair Tim Hopkins was unable to reach over the Thanksgiving holidays; and,  interviews are coming this month.
  • Dec 3 p  Noticed something different during last night's meeting. Instead of leaving the interim Director off to the side and out of the loop, Sheila Thorne was included in the discussions, made suggestions, and given responsibilities normally performed by Library Directors.  Stuff like buying office equipment and getting normal maintenance performed.
  • Dec 3 p Why the change? How the change? A couple weeks back, the head honcho library Czar from down in Charleston lined out Hopkins by providing strong words on how the Library Director (permanent or interim) is the lead person, provides the day to day operations; and, advises the Board on what needs done.
  • Dec 3 p Tim Hopkins must have been listening when Head Library guy Wagoner was laying out the facts. Good!
  • Dec 3 p Might even have a new Director by the beginning of the new year.
  • Dec 3 a  Betty L. Rogers, 76, see OBITUARY page
  • Dec 3 a How many square miles are there in the USA?
  • Dec 3 a On the TV Show Andy of Mayberry, what was Andy's great grandfather's name, the founding father of the town. Email answer

  • Dec 3 a Interested in taking a class over at the Valley Fork Community College? Offerings are posted over on the  JOBS page
  • Dec 3 a Answer to square miles in USA: 3,679,192

  • Dec 2 p Beulah Ruth Weaver, 80, see OBITUARY page
  • Dec 2 p Betty Jean (Nottingham) Acree, 82, see OBITUARY page
  • Dec 2 p  From the email bag:  On Nov 24th Mary Workman's grand daughter Diana Stapleton gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Carter was born at 5:02 pm and weighted in at 8 lbs 2 oz.  He was 21 3/4 in long.  Her mother Sharon Faunce (Workman) was there to assist with the delivery and preparing the baby to come home with his mom and dad.
  • Dec 2 p Ever wonder what was the number one hit song was on the date you were born? Here's the answer, have fun.
  • Dec 2 p Last week locals were saying the stock market would come back strong after all the Black Friday purchases. Ahhh.. didn't happen, the US stock market lost 8% of it's value yesterday.  Now a year into it, the big wigs are formally calling this mess a recession. Yesterday Dubbya said he was sorry.
  • Dec 2 p Think bigger. Think depression.
  • Dec 2 p Last  night's School Board meeting revealed no new info on the stink at Big Odor Elem. Other than mentioning  a Steve Cook and his report were coming during the next meeting, no mention.
  • Dec 2 p  During the Weekend Wrap Up we mentioned a West Virginia Ethics Commission ruling ( based on a Court case) that states: No School Boardster can have a wife working for the same school system. In Clayberry we have Boardster Rick Tanner and Jim Dawson with spouses employed in the school system.
  • Dec 2p After last night's School Board meeting, Rick Tanner said he had gone to many training sessions and had never heard of such a ruling.
  • Dec 2 p Here's that in black and white Ethics Commission ruling.
  • Dec 2 p If you're wondering about your Elk Power bill and whether it was read or estimated, there's no place on the monthly bill to indicate whether they were guessing or actually read the thang.
  • Dec 2 p Folks over at the Consumer Advocates Division of the WV PSC  said there is not a black and white yes or no. The rules say, the power company MUST tell you whether your bill is actually read but it does NOT say the info has to be on your monthly statement. With all the problems Elk Power had last Summer with bills NOT being read for months, sure would be easier if they just told you each month on the little card they mail out.
  • Dec 2 p   A large woman wearing a sleeveless sun dress, walked into a bar in Dublin . She raised her right arm, revealing a huge hairy armpit as she pointed to all the people sitting at the bar, and asked, "What man here will buy a lady a drink?"  The bar went silent as the patrons tried to ignore her. But down at the end of the bar, an owl-eyed drunk slammed his hand down on the counter and bellowed, "Give the ballerina a drink!"

  • The bartender poured the drink, and the woman chugged it down.  She turned to the patrons, and again pointed around at all of them, revealing the same very hairy armpit, and asked, "What man here will buy a lady a drink?"
Once again, the same little drunk slapped his money down on the bar and said, "Give the ballerina another drink!"  The bartender approached the drunk and said, "Tell me, Paddy, it's your business if you want to buy the lady a drink, but why do you keep calling her a ballerina?"   The drunk replied, "Any woman who can lift her leg that high... has got to be a ballerina!"
