There was a time when Clayonians actually showed some backbone
and spoke their minds when it came to lame brain shenanigans.
With fierce attitudes and finger pointing taxpayers had their
way during the first couple attempts to do zoning in County
Clay.
Ditto for
outraged Town business owners. Tempers flared in 2002 during a
public hearing with one owner (Jim Knotts) telling Town
Council, you do this regressive tax and I'll just close my
doors. Other attempts have been tried. So far, a B&O
burden has been averted.
For a six+
year period, on a regular basis, The Communicator ran stories
on lots of goods coming up stolen. Everything from backhoes,
dozers, oil field equipment and a bunch of brand new Cub Cadet
riding lawnmowers were nabbed by the father / son duo. Locals
were mad as H over law enforcement standing back as the items
were often found on Murder Mountain or Upper Wills Creek in
Kanawha County.
Finally in the Fall of '09, Feds swooped in and
arrested Tommy Sr and Tommy Jr.
For what seemed like an eternity The
Communicator ran article after article on the head
scratching antics of the "CDC" located on Main Street in
downtown Clay. At one point, Green Shirts (Foreman) were
called to remove all three owners of the local community
newspaper from a Board of Directors public meeting.
And then came the front page regional news in the
Charleston Gazette which started the dominoes falling on
the Clay Development Corp. The family dynasty crumbled in
quick order. For the CDC Director it wasn't racial bias
that did her in but sticky fingers of FEMA funds after the
2016 flood.
