BRUSH CUT AT STANDING ROCK TUNNEL
August 13 2020
Underneath milepost
53 of the Middle Section of ERTS, there's a very sharp lookin
cut stone tunnel. The only problem is, it's hard to find if
you don't know where to look. We were thru there on Aug 13th
and saw some big improvement. Along the trail, someone did
some weed patrol.
IF you are walking,
riding, South, down river from Ivydale, just before the 53
mile marker and just before the tunnel, there's this run down
ramshackle building...
If you are coming
North from Dundon, up river, you see the mile post which is
right over top of the tunnel.
If you're at the
mile post and try to go down to the creek from there, you're
in trouble. Don't even think about going over that bee
infested moss covered log. Take it from us, the buzzy things
are there
Instead,
about 70 feet up river from the mile marker and just across
from that run down shack, someone has trimmed back to weeds on
this small trail which takes you right to the Standing Rock
Tunnel.
While walking down the
path, two campsites have been reclaimed from the brush. Both
are fairly flat, in a beautiful location and just a couple
seconds off ERTS.
Here's the second
camping space. It's certainly big enough for a couple small
tents or tarps. The creek is near by and suitable for washing
up or doing dishes if boiled. Better bring your own drinking
wawa.
The picture doesn't
do it justice. Standing there, a cool breeze comes down the
hollow and rounds out the great experience. For those walking,
hiking from the old Ivydale Elem parking lot, it should take
you about an hour each direction.
Enjoy
Special note. Jim Ryan, Mayor Roho as some call him,
reports, as a kid they often played in a cave along the old
railroad bed, now ERTS. He says it isn't very far down the
trail from Ivydale. If anyone knows of the cave, Jim called
it, The Hobo Cave, we'd love to find it and get some pics of
it. Thanks
