ERTS UPDATE
For
the Ace Cub Reporter, the plan was to ride his electric
bike all Winter long and provide updates on the Elk River
Trail System (ERTS) even during ice and snow. That didn't
happen because, bike batteries do poorly in cold weather.
As a matter of fact, anytime it's below 45 degrees
outside, a 48 volt battery performance is cut in half.
Thus, no updates since Dec.
But but but... on March 11th 2021 with temps
around 70 degrees, how about a Spring update
We've got
some big improvements readers. the stretch of ERTS between
Dundon and up river, crews now have the top coat in place and
motorized vehicles off that part of the trail. Up until now,
that section was hemorrhoid pounder to say
the least. We can now report, from Nottingham Store in Duck to
just below the Hartland bridge, the entire path is smooth as a
baby's butt.
Ole Man Winter was
tough on ERTS. Ditches filled up, trees came down, culverts
stopped up and in place, the smooth surface was washed away.
Volunteers may have
helped during the cold months but contractor crews did some
heavy lifting on culverts and new top coating of limestone
sand. One section, around 58 mile marker had the ditch cleaned
out.
For those considering a trip on ERTS, it's ready to go.
As a matter of fact, with the leaves still down, it's a
great time to hike, bike or ride a horse because you can see
the ELK the entire trip.
Cairns had a rough
time over the Winter months too. Many of em were toppled by
tree branches and rock slides. Still, a few survived and there
is plenty of room for new ones to be built.
Cairns make us smile
