Jan 6 2019 Harold E. Dawson, 95, of Bartow, FL, formerly of Widen, WV, passed away on December 27, 2018, due heart failure. A loving husband, father, grandfather and great - grandfather, he proudly served his Country during WWII and was a decorated war veteran of the U.S. Army. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Verna Dawson of Bartow, FL; his children, Debra Dawson, Bartow, FL, Kim Dickerson, Jacksonville, FL, Larry (Nikki) Dawson of Bartow, FL, and Tracy Johnson of New Port Richey, FL, as well as eight grandchildren: Jason (Natalie), Kaylyn (Mike), Erica, Christopher, Steven, Ashlee, Samanth, and KayDee; and two great - grandchildren: Addyson and Abbygail. On January 9, 2019, a celebration of his life will be held at Cunningham Memorial Gardens in St. Albans, WV, in the Upper Chapel. Jan 3 2019  Katherine Mitchell Shay, 88, of Newport News, VA died December 31, 2018. She was born in Old Fort, NC and moved to Chimney Corner, WV in the early 1940’s, where she resided until moving to Newport News, Virginia in 2003.   She was retired from the US Postal Service, working many years in the Gauley Bridge, WV office. She sang in church choirs throughout her life as well as a soloist, performing for many weddings, memorial services and community functions, one of which included the sitting governor of WV. She was honored to share her talent anytime she was invited to sing. Katherine’s greatest joy was being a wife, mother and grandmother. She loved us fiercely and enjoyed all our family gatherings. Katherine is survived by her daughters, Debbie Johnson and husband Bill of Poquoson, VA, Beth Pridemore and husband Jim of Flatwoods, KY, and son, Kenny Mitchell and wife Karen of Lithopolis, OH. She was blessed with 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Donna Massey, Carol Bandy and brother Lloyd Whiteside and many nieces and nephews. Her husband of 35 years, Harry Mitchell, and her son, Doug Mitchell preceded her in death as well as her parents, Ralph and Esther Whiteside and brothers, Earl, Gene and Charles Whiteside. She is also preceded by Donald Shay, her husband of 12 years. Katherine will also be remembered by Don’s children, Steve, Randy, Jon, Paul and Donna. Katherine was a member of Northside Christian Church, Yorktown, VA and it’s Praymates class. A visitation for local family and friends will be held in the church atrium on Thursday, January 3rd from 4:00-7:00 p.m. She was a former member of Gum Springs Baptist Church in Chimney Corner, WV where her memorial service will be held on January 5th. Viewing and visitation will be from 12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m., followed by the service. Burial will take place at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Victor, WV. The family is most appreciative and grateful for the loving care their mom received from the nursing and caregiving staff of Elite Elder Care. Jan 3 2019  James Edward Murphy, 79, of Wooster passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the Cleveland Clinic. He was born July 28, 1939 in Maysel, West Virginia, the son of Lou James and Etta Mabel Summers Murphy. He married Jenette A. Bevins on October 4, 1958. She survives. He retired from Bogner Construction and also worked for Hammond Construction in his retirement. James also volunteered for Ohio’s Hospice Lifecare. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force from 1958-1962.  Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Ronni (Gary) Mullins of Lugoff, SC and Jacki (Steve) Zody of Wooster; grandchildren, Ryan Scott (Jessica) Mullins, Riley Michael (Angie) Mullins, Colton Jacob Zody, Zachary James Zody and Taylor Jenette Mullins; great-grandchildren, Charleston and Ryker Mullins and Leo Mullins; siblings, Ruthe (Jon) Bole of Tryon, NC, Patrick (Carolyn) Murphy of Statesville, NC, Robert (Katie) Murphy of Bluffton, SC and Linda Murphy (Kevin) Saffell of Shreve; an uncle, Dallas (Mabel) Murphy of Wooster and nieces, nephews and cousins.  James was preceded in death by his parents. Dec 27 2018  Herbert Daniel Nutter, 87, of Hurricane, passed away December 25, 2018, at Hubbard Hospice House, West. Born February 4, 1931, in Gad, WV, Herbert was a son of the late Perry and Lena Nutter. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his six brothers: Harry, Cecil, Shorty, Boa, Keith, and Ed; and sister: Everette Pierson. Herbert served his country in the United States Army, during the Korean War, stationed in Korea and Japan. He retired from Sears with over 30 years of service, in various roles within the company. Herbert also had a passion for music. He was a songwriter and played the guitar and loved country music. Herb Nutter was one of the good guys. He was loved by many. He is survived by his children and their spouses: Theresa Haney (David) of Hurricane and Danny Nutter (Tammy) of Winchester, KY; three grandchildren, Taylor Ann Haney, Zachary Daniel Nutter and Hayden Paige Nutter; great-grandson, Weston Scott Lee; and sister, Eva Stover of Dunbar. Funeral service will be held at noon on Friday, December 28, at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Rev. Dr. Ellis Conley and Rev. Jeremy Daniels officiating. Dec 26 2018  Maggie Virginia Neff, 79, of Bickmore, entered into rest Monday, December 24, 2018. Born September 4, 1939 in Clay, she was the daughter, of the late Jacob and Annie (Nottingham) Marling. She is survived by her sons, Jeffery and Johnny Neff both of Bickmore; daughter, Patricia Bennett of Victor; six grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren; brothers, Jim Marling of Fola and Luther Nottingham of Servia; sisters, Ollie Neff of Bickmore, Abby Grose of Duck, Sue Blankenship of Frametown. Eric Jason Thacker, cherished husband, father, son, brother, and uncle, passed away suddenly on December 19th. Eric was born January 19, 1986, in Columbus, Ohio. Eric was a 2004 graduate of Clay High School and received his doctorate of Pharmacy degree in 2011 from the University of Charleston in W.Va. He was an exceptional pharmacist, employed at CAMC Memorial division in Charleston, W.Va, where he was well known for his deep concern and well-being of patients and colleagues. Eric was a Christian, and full of compassion and love for others. He cherished his wife, daughters, and soon to be born son. Eric will be forever remembered by his wife, Jennifer; daughters, Nora and Evie; and unborn son, Owen Jason. Eric will also be lovingly remembered by his parents, Howard (Butch) and Toni Thacker; brother, Michael (Brittany) Thacker; sister, Natalie (Brady) Carter; mother-in-law, Linda Edwards; father-in-law, David Edwards; sister-in-law, Jaclyn Edwards; brother-in-law, Jonathan Edwards; grandmother, Linda Homoelle; and nephews, Blaine, Branson, Anderson, and Jonah. Aileen Ehman Wrenn, 85, of Charleston, W.Va., died peacefully in her sleep at home on December 19, 2018. Aileen was born on December 28, 1932, in Clay, W.Va. She was predeceased by her parents, Mary Alice Jones and Harry Thomas of Clay; her first husband of two years, Clarence "Henry" Ehman of Charleston; her beloved second husband of 45 years, Kenneth Frederick "Fred" Wrenn Jr. of Charleston; siblings, Carolyn Thomas of Clay, Joyce Stockwell Kendall of Charleston and Angelo Thomas (Donna) of Rancho Cordova, Calif.
   Aileen graduated from Clay County High School in 1952 and moved to Charleston shortly thereafter. She married Henry, and after his tragic death, met and married Fred Wrenn while they both worked at United Fuel / Columbia Gas Transmission. With the birth of their first child, Aileen left employment and dedicated herself to being mother, and then grandmother, to her own family, but also opened her loving arms to friends young and old whom she embraced with unsurpassed warmth, kindness, wisdom and humor. Of all things, she delighted in her precious grandchildren and took being a Grandma very seriously.
   She loved taming wild squirrels and birds, took delight in all things green and growing, was passionate about supplying pawpaw fruit to Ellen's Ice Cream each summer, loved dancing to Eric Clapton's music, and was always there to help, nurture, heal and support her family. Aileen also enjoyed travel, and she and Fred visited many countries together before his passing. She also traveled to Nags Head, N.C., nearly every summer for the past 46 years to vacation with her family and friends at her beloved Sea Foam Motel. She was a 50-plus year member of First Presbyterian Church of Charleston, and lived her life as an example of Christian grace.
   Her strength and love will forever be cherished in the lives of her three daughters, Diane (Tod) Holcomb, Marilyn Wrenn (Stephen Haynes) and Leslie (Scot) Drake; grandchildren, Connor Mason Haynes, Emily Wrenn Harrell, Jonathan Frederick Harrell and Gabrielle Madison Drake, all of Charleston; sister, Jean Samples of Norwalk, Ohio; and brother, Steve (Eva) Thomas of Clay. She will also be remembered and missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends and family.
   The family would like to particularly express appreciation for the friendship and kindness of her neighbors, Julia Schaul, and Ron and Gina Butler, who added so much joy to her life.
   Visitation services will be held at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home in Charleston, W.Va., from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 26, and noon Thursday, December 27, with funeral service at 1 p.m. Graveside service will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in South Charleston. Dec 19 2018  Escar E. ‘’Tenny” Taylor, 82, of Lizemores, entered into rest Wednesday, December 19, 2018, at his home, after a long battle with dementia.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and never met a stranger. Born March 11, 1936, in Leatherwood,   he was the son of the late Walter and Maysel (Brown) Taylor.  In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty (Holcomb) Taylor, his son, Donald Taylor, great-grandson, Nykan Detamore; and sisters, Betty Lou, Shirley and Yvonne. He was a coal miner for most of his life as well as the former owner of Lizemores Exxon for many years. Tenny is survived by his sons, Larry (Kim) Taylor, Greensboro, PA., Jeff (Fran) of Lizemores; daughters, Susan (Ralph) McNemar of Charlton Heights, Cathy (Mike) Jones of Lizemores, Jean Ann Hodge  of Lizemores; thirteen grandchildren, twenty –two great grandchildren;  his beloved dog Missy; brothers, Leon and Gaylord; and sisters, Arbutus, Arletta and Dianne. Dec 10 2018   William H. “John” Lytle, 91, of Frametown, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at Clay Health Care Center, Clay. He was born September 23, 1927 in Wire Bridge, WV the son of the late William Richard ? Susie Triplett Lytle. He is also preceded in death by brothers, Dick, Carl, Deb and Foster. John was a Pipeliner with International Local Union # 132 of Operating Engineers for 55 years. He worked all over the United States as a Pipeliner. He served in Coast Guard during WWII and was a member of Hope Baptist Church, Frametown. He is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Lou Duncan Lytle; sons, George Lytle (Lisa), Jonathan Lytle (Leona), William R. Lytle (Brenda), Scott Lytle all of Frametown; daughter, Teresa Jean Keener (Jack) of Morgantown; 8 grandchildren and 6 great- grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm, Monday, December 10, 2018 at Hope Baptist Church, Frametown with Rev. Margaret Marlene Vineyard, 80, of Arnoldsburg, West Virginia, passed away Wednesday December 5, 2018 at Roane General Hospital after an extended illness.  She was born in Clay County, West Virginia on March 11, 1938 and attended Roane County High School. She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Spencer State Hospital. Margaret enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and playing cards. Margaret is preceded in death by her husband Earl F. Vineyard, father Patrick O’Dell, mother Elizabeth O’Dell Mullins, brothers William O’Dell, Leon O’Dell, Paul O’Dell, Patrick Jr. O’Dell, sisters Arlene Cobb, Helen Carper. Margaret is survived by her children Debbie Cox, Earl “Flip” Vineyard, and David Vineyard (Lora Davis) of Arnoldsburg, WV; grandchildren Kala Burgett (Bryce) of Fredericktown, OH, Victoria Vineyard of Washington, OH, Cole Vineyard (Katelyn) of Spencer, WV, Ross, Hayes, and Zane Vineyard of Arnoldsburg, WV, and Garrett Vineyard of Kenna, WV; brother Eugene O’Dell of Spencer, WV, great-grandchildren Bristol and William Barrett Burgett of Fredericktown, OH and Emery Johnson of Washington, WV and several nieces and nephews.  Upon her prior request there will be no service.

Dec 6 2018  Jerry E. (Dink) White, 78, of Ovapa, WV, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, from the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving wife of 55 years and his 2 daughters. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie (King) White; his daughters, Vickie (Brian) Holcomb and Kimberley (John) Carroll; and grandchildren, Dustin and Emily Holcomb and John Ross and James Carroll all of Ovapa, WV. He is also survived by brother, James (Deloras) White of Floral City, FL, sisters, June (Jack) McCracken of Akron, OH, Linda (Tawney) Boggs of Rupert, WV,  Sandy Potasnik of Ovapa, WV, sister-in law, Frances White of Ovapa, WV, and brother-in-law, Robert Thomas of Belle, WV, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Olive (Brown) White of Ovapa, WV, brothers, Pete (Linda) White of Elyria, OH, Richard White of Ovapa, WV, and sister, Anna Sue Thomas of Belle, WV. He was a man of God, a doting husband, father and grandfather and a well-respected member of his community who will be remembered fondly by all. A special thank you to Hospice Care caretakers, Amy Summers, Angie Butler, Nichole Dolin and Pat Elswick for their warm, heart-filled care. Jerry donated his body to the Human Gift Registry’s WVU School of Medicine. Ethel Kathleen Nichols, 101, of Wallback passed away Monday November 19, 2018 at home after a short illness. She was an Advent Christian. Ethel was the daughter of the late Harrison and Rebecca Nichols. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clothen Nichols; son, Junior Nichols; daughter Pauline Harrison; and grandchildren, Tammy and Walt. She is survived by: daughters, Emogene Tanner (Sherlie), Dorothy Tanner, Betty Klingensmith (Barry) and Cheryl Nichols (Vernon Hensley); daughter in law, Linda Nichols; sisters, Roberta Barnhouse and Betty Longworth; brother, Burl Nichols; grandchildren, Pamela, “Mickey” Steven, Kate, Stephen, Kim, Gary Keith, Annette, Michael, Shawn, Jason and Kristy; several great grandchildren; and 9 great great grandchildren. Dec 3 2018 Dorma Marvis Sutton,    It is with great sadness that the family of Dorma (Marvis) Sutton announces her passing, after a brief illness, on Saturday, December 1, 2018. She lived 88 beautiful years and will be remembered as a strong, independent woman and a friend to all.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Bob) Sutton and a sister, Betty Jarvis. Marvis graduated from Clay County High School with the class of 1948 and regularly attended class reunions. After graduating from Glenville State College, she taught school in Clay County for eight years. She gave up her teaching career to be with her children, and later returned as a post mistress at the Tariff Post Office for over thirty years. Marvis is survived by three children; two sons, Harry David (Brenda), Bobby (Rita) and daughter, Marilyn (RK) Taylor.  She had five grandchildren, David and Robby Sutton, Melissa (Steve) Kershner, and Colter and Cassidy Taylor.  She also had one great-granddaughter, Jailynn Kershner.   Surviving siblings include two sisters, Glenna White of Charleston, South Carolina and Norma Shaffer of Inverness, Florida.  Marvis lived her life fully and selflessly. She was devoted to helping others and always had a beautiful smile. Her love and extreme devotion to her grandchildren was immense. Dec 3 2018  Dylan Cole Grose, 19, of Big Otter, went to his heavenly home on November 30, 2018, due to a tragic car accident. He was a graduate of Clay County High School and was employed by Blue Flame Pipeline. He attended Nebo Baptist Church. Dylan lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed football, Jeeping, 4-H camp, and beating his friends at various video games. He loved singing for Jesus. He was a beloved son, brother, grandson, and a friend to all that knew him. He never met a stranger and always had a smile on his face. He is survived by his mother, Shella Cross and Jim Sears of Big Otter, father and stepmother, Jason and Racheal Grose of Looneyville; siblings, Gracyn and Lawson Grose, and Taylor “Tyler” Sears of Big Otter, and his brother, by choice, Drew Belt of Nebo; his maternal grandparents, Floyd and Mary Cross of Chloe, and his paternal grandparents, Troy and Hazel Grose of Gassaway and Jeff Rider of Clay. Nov 14 2018  Rev. Charles E. Blankenship, 79, of Gauley Bridge, went home to with the Lord on November 1, 2018. Treasured by his daughter, Betheny (Blankenship) Koch, and her husband Mitch of Glen Ferris; grandson, Andrew Koch/Goodfellow Air Force Base, TX and his wife, Natalie; sister, Shirley (Nottingham) Maynard of Brownsville, many nieces and nephews, and special longtime friend, Jack Johnson of Glen Ferris. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sondra (Richardson) Blankenship; his parents, Clara (Baker) and Mearl Blankenship; brothers and sisters; Beulah (Blankenship) Burleson, Virgil and Paul Blankenship He was born in Big Creek, on August 28, 1939 and served in the US Army from 1963-1965.  He was a businessman and entrepreneur. He was the founder and pastor of the Brownsville Holiness Church for over fifty years. He dedicated his life to the Lord and did  great work as he pastored, evangelized with his dear friend Bro. Harry Johnson/gospel artist, preached many funerals, was a great asset to his community, and touched many lives over the years.  He was well loved by a host of Christian brothers and sisters, some gone on and some left to carry on his great work by faith. Nov 13 2018  Clinton Salyers, 58, of Procious, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 9, 2018, at Hubbard Hospice House after a short illness. He was the son of the late Robert and Kelsie McIntosh Salyers. Clinton was a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Clay, W.Va., and he was also an employee of CORE Appalachia and United Steel Workers, Local 628, in Charleston, W.Va. He was survived by his wife, Robin Salyers; sons, Nathan and Joshua Salyers (Megan); daughter, Ashley Boggs (Christopher); sisters, Donna Boner (Gene) and Bobbie Carol White (Gregg); and grandchildren, Samuel, Jace, Braxton, Allie, Jamison, and Paislee. Clint was a family man. He loved his wife, three children, six grand children and they loved him. He instilled within each of us that family comes first. He was loving, compassionate, humorous, hardworking and smart. He was always working at something and was a great provider for his family. He was the type of man that would do anything he could to help others. He never met a stranger. If you were a stranger when you met- you were his friend when you left. Oct 31 2018  Mary R Ferrebee, 91, of Clay, WV entered into rest on Sunday, Oct 28th at her home.  She owned and operated the Henry Clay Hotel in Clay for over 30 years.  Mary spent her life on earth being a substitute mother for all who needed her.  She loved quilting and her quilts are treasured by all those that have been blessed with them. She is proceeded in death by her husband Dencil Ferrebee, her sisters Ruby Boss, May White and Betty Holcomb, her son-in-law Roger “Moon” Mullins, and her great grandson Jeremy Ferrebee. She leaves behind her daughter Alma “Peach” Mullins, of Clay WV her son Wayne Mack (Patricia) Ferrebee of Waterford, OH.  Her grandchildren Beth Ferrebee, Janet Ferrebee, Anita (Benny) McKinney all of Clay, Wayne Ferrebee of Brooklyn NY, and Caroline (Andy) Miller of Columbia MD.  Great- Grandchildren Joshua Ferrebee, Adam (Stacey) Ferrebee, Jacob (Allison) Ferrebee, John Ferrebee, Chelsea Ferrebee (Little Mary), and Jarod Ferrebee.  One Great-Great-Grandchild Sydney Ferrebee. Oct 15 2018   Maysel M. West Carr, 83, of Valley Fork, entered in rest Saturday, October 13, 2018. Born January 22, 1935, she was the daughter of the late George West and Roxie (Rogers) Nutter. In addition to her parents, Maysel was also preceded in death by her brother, Cecil; and sister, Hazel. Mom will be remembered for her dedication to her family, her hospitality towards family friends and passers by.  Dad says she never met a stranger.  They were always welcomed and often fed at her table where everyone came away satisfied and happy. She set a wonderful example of a principled character and strong ethics before all. Mom gave us a life of structure and fun.  She will be sorely missed at the card (Rook) table. She was a person of faith.  Mom trusted THE LORD JESUS CHRIST for everything here as well as for her hereafter. Oct 12 2018  Hollie D. Workman, a fellow disciple of Jesus Christ, has left this world to be with our Lord and his forefathers; to live forever in a place not made by hands. We thank God for his long life, his steady witness for our Lord, and for the enrichment, he brought to the lives of his family, friends, and countless others that he was able to touch over his lifetime. He was the last remaining child of Melvry and Juditha Workman and died at age 93. He leaves for a short while his wife of 69 years, Mary Belle, his two sons Mike and Reggie, daughter in law Robin, grandkids Mark, Heather, Nathan, granddaughters in law Deb and Emily, and great-grandkids Mike, Carlie and Everett. Oct 11 2018  Lester E. Sears, 90, passed away October 5, 2018.  He lived in the Akron area since 1952, and was a native of Clay County, West Virginia, son of the late Lanta W. and Joda B. Sears.  He served his country in the U.S. Army as a truck driver after WWII.  He graduated from Fairmont State College in Fairmont, West Virginia, and was a member of Adoniram Masonic Lodge.  Les retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company with 35 years service and was later employed part time at various companies.  He is survived by one aunt; one uncle; and many friends.  Friends may call 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM Tuesday October 16, 2018 at the Adams Mason Funeral Home (791 East Market Street), where funeral services will immediately follow at 1:00 PM.  Rev. Oct 5 2018  Kerry Duane Davis, 50, of Maysel, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, on Friday, October 5, 2018. Born on May 24, 1968, to Ralph and Linda (Pauley) Davis.  Kerry’s life was an adventure from the beginning. His greatest joys were his family, church family and friends.  He was a member of Clay First Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as an usher and member of the choir. Kerry worked for nearly 30 years at Clay County Services Unlimited.  He took great pride in his job and often insisted on going to work, even if the workshop was closed.  In 2010, Kerry was thrilled to receive the Work Center Employee of the Year Award. A graduate of Clay County High School, Kerry supported the Panther football team on the field at nearly every home game for as long as he was physically able. Kerry was always ready with an encouraging hug or high-five.  He made people smile wherever he went. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents. Oct 5 2018 Glen Wilson Sutton, age 85, passed away at home October 4, 2018 in the arms of the love of his life, Frances (Davis) Sutton. He was preceded in death by his son, Rodrick Sutton and his grandson, Mykhyal Sutton. Surviving is his daughter, Sherry Ortiz (Jim);  granddaughters, Nikki Ortiz, Toni Marcellus (Justin), Chelsea Bergthaler (Markus), and Jaime Ortiz (Collin);  daughter-in-law, Catrinia Sutton;  grandson, Aristotle Sutton and his fianc? Oct 3 2018  Franklin Childers III, 45, of Glen, entered into rest Monday, October 1, 2018. HE was born in Stuttgart, Germany on February 11, 1973. Frank was an equipment operator for Penn Line Services. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Orvis and Freda Moore and Franklin Childers, Sr. and Sue (Bill) Bailey. Oct 3 2018 THELMA M. LEE, 87, of Spencer, West Virginia formerly of Clay, West Virginia and Logan, West Virginia died Saturday, September 29, 2018 at her home after an extended illness.  She was born May 2, 1931 in Matewan, West Virginia a daughter of the late Charles F. and Goldie Patton Puckett. Thelma was a lifelong student and educator. She graduated from Logan High School and received her Bachelor's Degree from West Virginia State in Elementary Education. She later attended the West Virginia College of Graduate Studes (COGS) where she received her Master's Degree in Remedial Education. She started her career as a teacher's aide for the Clay County School Systems, then became a teacher at Clay Elementary and later retired as a teacher for the West Virginia Rehabilitation Center in Adult Education. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Spencer.   Thelma is survived by one son, Charles W. Lee of Spencer; five grandchildren, James Christopher (JC) Lee of Ripley, West Virginia, and Kimberly Lee, Taylor Lee, Tyler Lee and Adalynn "Addie" Lee, all of Spencer; and three great-grandchildren, Macy Lee and Caden and Clay Cottrell.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 2012, Harold A. Lee, West Virginia State Police, Retired. Also proceeding her where her siblings, Edward and Phillip Puckett, Pearl "Bo" Jordan, Margaret "Sissy" Gresham, Edna "Chey" Maynard, and an infant, Russell Addison Lee.  Service will be at 3:00pm Thursday, September 4, 2018 at the TAYLOR-VANDALE FUNERAL HOME, Spencer, with Rev. Born December 1, 1953, in Charleston, he was the son of the late Arthur and Mary Ann (Canfield) Salisbury. Sept 21 2018  Charles Phillip Heltman, 80, gained his heavenly wings on Wednesday, September 19, 2018. He was a Vietnam Veteran, proudly serving the US Navy for 20 years. He was also a lineman for Bell Atlantic for almost 20 years; He was a past secretary for the Masonic Lodge in Madison.  Charles also was a member of Gauley Bridge Baptist Church. Charles leaves behind his loving bride of 52 years, Marvelene; daughter, Andrea (Jeremy) Whiteside and son Ryan (Christine) Heltman; four wonderful grandchildren, Damian (Keeley) Elswick, Matthew and Cassie Whiteside and Kelsey Heltman; brothers, James (Lynne) and Alfred (Ilene); and host of nieces and nephews; and Debby Heltman who thought of him as her dad. Sept 19 2018  Iva June Morton Skaggs, 86, of Mount Olive, went home to be with the Lord with her family at her bedside on Sunday, September 16, 2018 at the Hubbard Hospice House after a short illness.  Born on June 21, 1932, she was the daughter of George and Laura Morton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward “Eddie” O. Skaggs;  brothers, Carl, Norvel, Donald, and George “Petie” Morton;  sisters, Irene Sizemore, Rossie Coleman, Ruby Stone, Georgie Rider, and Lenora Sizemore. Wesley Shaun Brown, 40, of Wallback, died Friday, September 7, 2018, from injuries received in a logging accident. He was born February 2, 1978 at Charleston, the son of Bonnie J. Keith Brown of Wallback and the late Wesley Sterling Brown.  In addition to his mother, survivors include four sons, Lance, Nicholas, Wynston and Kayden Brown all of Wallback; sister, Tammy Peck of Clendenin; four brothers, Richard Brown of Bickmore, Terry Brown and Danny Brown both of Wallback, Michael Brown of California.  Shaun was a timber cutter and a graduate of Clay County High School, Class of 1997. Sept 14 2018  Elizabeth Walls, 78, of For Oglethorpe, GA, formerly of Clay, entered into rest Tuesday, September 11, 2018, after a long battle with Lewy body dementia. On November 18, 1939 in Kermit, WV, she was the daughter, of the late Burley and Stella (Pack) Spaulding.  In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl Walls; brother, Thurmond and sister, Sharon. She was the oldest of ten children. Elizabeth is survived by her sons, Ronald Walls of Frametown and David Walls of Clay; daughter, Sheila Shackleford or Rossville, GA; grandchildren, Austin Buford of GA, Ron Walls of Ripley, Kelli Eagle of Nitro, Brittney Boggs of Elkview, Alyssa Neal of St. Albans, David Walls of Clay, Timmy Shackleford and Katie Leamon both of Tenn.; eleven great-grandchildren; sisters, Faye, Barb, Alta, Debbie, Rhonda, Connie and Jodie. She was also a grandma to many children throughout her life; she will be missed and loved by all who knew her. Sept 12 2018  Simpson B. Neal, 76, of Bickmore, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at Cabel Huntington Hospital after an extended illness.  Born on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1942, he was the son of Vernon and Leslie Neal. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Elmo Neal; sisters, Arlene Coen, Catherine Holcomb and Mozelle Cruikshank.  He was a 1961 graduate of Clay County High School where he was a member of the band and played the tuba. Simpson attended WVU.IT. He loved astronomy and looking at and studying the stars, Ham radios and was a jack of all trades. He was a member and a deacon at the Lick Fork Baptist Church, where he also played the piano, taught Sunday school and was a Sunday school superintendent.  In years past he was a member of the Sun Lighters Quartet and the Neal Family Singers.  He was retired from Sears with 32 years of service. He was the best dad and papaw in the world. He was very proud of his grand daughters and his three great-grandchildren.  Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, of 53 years, Martha Neal of Bickmore; daughter, Tammy Neal Cooper and husband Bill of Gauley Bridge; granddaughters, Kelli Grubb and husband Shandon of Fayetteville; Stephanie Oxley and husband James of Hinton; great-grandchildren, Dillon Grubb, Adalynn Grubb and Piper Oxley; several nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.  Funeral service will be held noon, Monday, September 17, at Wilson-Smith Funeral Home, Clay with Ministers John Osborne and Justin Neal officiating. Sept 9 2018  On Tuesday, September 4, 2018, Marcus Lee Sigman, 14, was chosen by the lord to start his search for that big honey hole in the sky.  Which he has undoubtedly tested every water hole in site.  On March 26, 2004 our family was blessed with two beautiful babies. Marcus and his twin brother and partner in crime, Mason. Marcus grew into a handsome young man, he however was never alone. If you saw Marcus, Mason wasn’t far behind.  Marcus enjoyed playing football, playing in the creek, if you couldn’t find him, you for sure knew he was doing what he loved, fishing. He loved his family as much as they loved him. He attended Clay and Calhoun Schools, where he acquired many friends. He had a smile that was contagious, but You knew he was up to something when you saw his crooked smile. Aug 30 2018  Roy Jackson Nida Jr. well known as “JACK”. He was the only son of Roy Jackson Nida Sr. and Ruby Gladys Looney. He was born on December 02, 1930 in Amma, West Virginia. He attended Amma Elementary School, Spencer High School where he won the school championship in table tennis. Jack joined the U.S.A.F and spent the next four years at Lockland Air Force Base in San Antonio Texas as a Supply Sergeant. Jack attended Charleston School of Commerce where he graduated with a diploma in Accounting. He also attended Morris Harvey College, now Charleston University where he studied Chemistry and Engineering. He worked at Union Carbide, and founded Advanced Chemicals Products/ Neoprene International Corp.. He lived at Amma, Boston, Chicago and Atlanta.  Jack married his lovely wife Norma Jean Nida on August 28,1959; he had two children, Randall and Sandra, Jack had daughter in- law Zuany; three grandchildren.,Randall Jr., James Jackson and Thomas Jefferson.  Jack enjoyed playing musical instruments, writing, gardening, genealogy, traveling, hunting and fishing. Jack was small business owner, musician, veteran and writer. Jack was the author of “The Family Von Nida, From Germany to America 1262-1998”. He attended historical society meetings and was a “Son of the American Revolution”. The family would like to express our thanks for the wonderful help and care given to him. Jack’s biggest concern was caring for his wife Jean after she suffered a stroke. We all think he did a great job taking care of her.  We will miss you Jack. Rest in Peace. Aug 30 2018   Beulah White, 86, of Bomont, entered into rest August 28, 2018. Born February 18, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Vena (Salyer) Bullard. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Ted White; and daughter, Robin Daily. Beulah is survived by her daughters, Peggy Bragg of Leon, Wilma Smith of North Dakota and Sheila Samples of Bomont; son, Ronnie White of Roanoke, VA; eight grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. Beulah was a devout Christian and a member of Burke Church of Procious.  She loved writing recipes for the Clay County Free Press for 30 years.  She loved quilting and embroidering. William "Billy" Gratz August 12, 1947 - August 12, 2018  William “Billy” Gratz, age 71, of Lorain, passed away while under the care of New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, at his home surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, August 12, 2018. He was born on August 12, 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland, but raised in West Virginia. After Clay High graduation, he moved to Lorain. Billy was a left hand body floor man for Ford Motor Company, Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake for 35 years, before retiring from there in 2003. After retirement, he kept himself out of trouble by working as a bus monitor for First Student. While working there, he was proudly part of the group that affectionately referred to themselves as “The Dream Team.” Billy truly enjoyed what he did and always looked forward to going to work. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Any free time he had, Billy loved to get out and cruise on his Harley anywhere he could. He liked being outside and enjoying the warm sunshine. You could usually find him sitting outside of his house just being content watching the traffic go by, if he wasn’t out on his bike. He liked working crossword puzzles and playing solitaire on the computer. His greatest love in life was his grandchildren. They had a special place in his heart that he cherished. William is survived by his wife of 21 years, Martha Sue (nee Schrader) Gratz, his children; Timothy (Amanda) Gratz, Steven (Billie Jo) Gratz, Robert (Connie) Gratz, Clayton Parker, and Scotty Parker, his 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and his siblings; Barb, Wilma, Richard, Sharon, Ronald, and Naomi. He was preceded in death by a son, David, in 2002, his parents; William Henry Sr., and Edith Grace (nee Boals) Gratz, and 2 sisters; Rosemary and Pauline. Aug 28 2018 Jerry Bryant Bird  passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, August 21, 2018. Born January 25, 1965, in Charleston, he was the son of Jerry and the late Peggy (Hunt) Bird. He graduated from Clay County High School and attended West Virginia Tech.  Jerry was employed by the West Virginia Public Service Commission, Electronics Technician for the Transportation Enforcement Division. Bryan’s favorite vacation destination was Folly Beach, South Carolina and he enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting and fishing and cheering on the Mountaineers! In addition to his father, left to mourn his death is his only sister, Tammy Bragg; two sons, Andrew and Vincent Bird; and many relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held 3:00 P.M. Aug 23 2018 Martha May Tilley, 94, of Charlton Heights, went home to be be with her heavenly Father on Monday, August 20, 2018, in Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston after a sudden breakdown. Born April 27, 1924 in Greenbrier County, she was the daughter of the late John and Emma (Chrisman) Akers. She was also preceded in death by her son Larry Alan Tilley. Mrs. Tilly was a homemaker and much much more. Aug 13 2018  Roger Glen "MOON" Mullins, 68, entered into rest on August 10, 2018.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Tressie (Legg) Mullins, and his grandson, Jeremy Ferrebee. He is survived by his wife Peach, and best friend, Sadie, of Clay, daughter, Tressi Mullins, step-daughters, Jennifer Douglas, Beth and Janet Ferrebee, and Anita (Benny) McKinney, sister, Dorothy Fitzwater and brother, Sammy Mullins.  Grandchildren, Daniel, Emily, Hannah, Dylan, Josh, Adam, Jake, John, Chelsea and Jarod.  2 great-grandchildren. He and his wife are the owners of Peach's Place in Procious.  He served in Viet Nam for the United States Army. Moon was a retired pipeliner for the Louisiana Labors Union, Local #692. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the outdoors. He was a member of the Big Knob Hunting Club and was a volunteer for the annual Wallback Lake Youth Fishing Derby and Buffalo Creek Recreational Trail. He will be missed by many loving friends. Aug 11 2018  M. Scott Gibson, 80, of Flatwoods, WV passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at the Bellaire at Devonshire assisted living facility in Scott Depot, WV. He was born on August 12, 1937 in Charleston, WV to the late Luther Gibson and Gladys (Strickland) Gibson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister Barbara Underwood.  Scott in survived by wife, Margaret (Self) Gibson whom he shared 45 years of marriage together. Scott is also survived by, son M. Scott Gibson, Jr. and wife, Crystal of Clay, WV; daughters Pamela Thistlethwaite and husband, Danny of South Charleston, WV and Amy Arrington and husband, Joe of Gallipolis Ferry, WV. Also surviving grandchildren Ian Thistlethwaite, Alex Thistlethwaite Parra and husband Carlos, Trent Gibson, Kylie Arrington, and Colton Arrington, and great-grandchildren, Daniella and Lily Parra . In addition to his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and is survived by one brother, Morgan Gibson and wife, Joyce of Clay, WV, and nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He graduated from Clay County High School and then attended Glenville State College, and later the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He was a longtime member of the West Virginia Funeral Director Association. Scott spent many years at the Carl Wilson Funeral Home, in Clay County, WV. He owned and operated the Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home from 1972 until his health declined and was unable to. He was a member of the Strange Creek Masonic Lodge #130 AF and AM . He was a past Director of the City National Banks.

Aug 11 2018   Charles VanKirk, 87, of Indore, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on August 9, 2018 at CAMC Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Born August 1, 1931 in Enoch, he was the son of the  late James and Elvra (Ramsey) VanKirk.  In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Harry, Dallas and Homer VanKirk; sister, Gladys Bowers. Charles was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.  He loved his family with all of his heart.  Charles honorably served his country in Korean War. Myrtie “Jo” (Conley) Singleton, 85, of 586 Front Street, Burnsville, WV slipped away during the early morning hours on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at her residence.  Mrs. Singleton was born on August 28, 1932 at Benny’s Run, WV to the late Roy “Hub” David Conley and Sis (Ratliff) Conley.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two infant children William and Marty, brother Phillip Conley, sisters Betty Williams, Madeline Shock, son in law Cermit Ramsey, brother-in-law Ray Williams, and brother-in-law Thermon Shock   On November 3, 1952 she married her loving husband of 65 years Marvin F. Singleton who survives.  Also surviving are children Scott W. Singleton and wife Robin of Burnsville, WV, JoAnn “Sis” Ramsey of Clay, WV, David “Will” K. Singleton and wife Brenda of Weston, Kathy L. Rush and husband Jerry of Moorefield, WV, Karen K. Singleton and husband Donald of Heaters, WV. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.  In addition to her husband, children, great- grandchildren, siblings she is survived by brother Jack Conley of Salem, WV, sister Lillian M. Singleton of West Milford, WV, and several nieces and nephews. July 9 2018   Auddis “Bum” Gray, 84, of Clay, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2018. Born August 19, 1933 in Swandale, he was the son, of the late Shannon and Marie Gray. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Wanita Gray. Auddis work for the Hoop and Holler Phone Company owned by Murry Smith and later retired from Contel Phone Company after 33 years of service. He loved his camp in Lilly, hunting, fishing, woodworking and going to summer / fall festivals and meeting people. Auddis also loved WVU football  and basketball, loved being a Mountaineer and his Mt. Dew. Auddis is survived by his son, Michael (Mary) Gray of VA; grandchildren, Michael W. July 6 2018  Christina (Albright) Jones, 35, of Glasgow, formerly of Clay, received her angelic wings on Sunday, July 1, 2018. Born August 10, 1982, in Montgomery, she was the daughter of Helen Ann (Harold) Cummings. Christy spent her childhood in Clay and is a 1998 graduate of Clay County High School. After a few years spent as a CNA, fate brought her back to her high school sweetheart Jeremiah Jones; they were married June 22, 2005, from their love two children were born, Madison Hope Albright Jones (13) and Allison Faith Jones (9) they were her most valuable treasures. She devoted herself to being a great wife and mother.  Wherever she went she made the best of everything, she was always smiling and trying to help others.  In addition to her mother and step father; husband; and daughter; Christy leaves behind her brothers, Thomas Albright, Brandon White; sisters, Karen O’Neil, BJ and Norma Jean and many in laws; nieces and nephews; and a couple of special friends, Terri Justice and Chris Armstrong, whom Christy loved dearly. June 29 2018   Della Wanda (Gregory) Moore, 85, of Boomer, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 in Montgomery. She was a retail clerk at GC Murphy Department Store and a member of the Boomer Baptist Church. Born September 23, 1932, in Huntington, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Franklin and Lennie Virginia (Spears) Gregory. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Moore; and brother, Gordon Gregory; and sister, Ruby Rogers Left to cherish her memory are her nephew, Gordon (Mary) Gregory of Prosperity; step-daughter, Linda (Arlie) Johnson of OH; step-sons, Lee (Doris) Moore of OH, Lonnie Moore, Jr., Keith (Cindy) Moore of MD, William (Mary) Taylor of NC; nieces, Debbie (Joe) Myer of FL, Gloria Jean (Mickey) Notch of NC, Carolyn Ann Hunt, Marie (Charles) Williams, Kay (Mike) Ward, and Susan (Joe) Rose, all of Oak Hill; and a host of other relatives and friends. June 25 2018  O. Gene King Sr., 81, of Clay, entered into rest June 17, 2018. Born August 19, 1937, in Clay County, he was the son of the late Robert Preston King and Mamie Ethel Woodrum King. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Garrett King, Earl King, and Jerry King. His sisters, Nina Faye King, Irene Hardman, Ivy Wells, and Agnes Beckett also preceded him in death. Gene served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1958. He was retired from Union Carbide where he worked for 20-plus years. He also worked as the Clay Chief of Police and later as a Clay County Court Bailiff. Gene was an avid WVU fan and active in local politics. Gene was always giving of his time for others and served the people of Clay County as a member of the Clay Board of Education for over 35 years. He also actively participated in the Lion's Club and Masonic Order of Masons. Survivors include his son, O. Gene King Jr. (Angie) of Clay and daughter Kathy (Marion) Roby of Harrisville; two grandchildren, Robert Roby and Jennifer Roby; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Audrey Oxley; and several nieces and nephews. O. Gene King Sr. donated his body to WVU School of Medicine for research. A memorial service will be determined at a later date at the convenience of the family.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the American Lung Association.
 

June 23 2018   Emily Kay Dobbins entered into rest Friday, June 22, 2018. Emily was a loving mother of 8, faithful wife of 59 years. Infectious smile and a beautiful soul. Loved the color blue, and gave her entire life in service to GOD and family  She is truly loved, and will be missed. June 22 2018  Clay - Hazel Reedy Shearer, a beautiful and Godly woman, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 21, 2018.  Hazel’s journey began on October 6, 1927 in Bickmore; she was the second of four daughters of Jesse and Ocie Osborne Reedy. In 1943, while a student at Clay County High School, Hazel met the very handsome Russell Patrick Shearer (Pat) of Clay.  Truly smitten from the beginning, Pat tried to convince Hazel to marry him when they were only 13 years old.  They both went on to graduate, and Hazel also graduated from Glenville State College with her teaching degree in 1950, while Pat went on to serve our country in the military.  The two lovebirds finally married at the age of 25 on January 9, 1953 at Hazel’s parent’s home in Bickmore. After marrying, Pat and Hazel quickly began their family.  Their children are:  Russell Patrick (Joyce) Shearer, Jr., Rachel Frances Shearer (Rocky) Osborne, Roberta Reedy Shearer (Barry) Faile and Ritchie Jesse Shearer. Hazel’s grandchildren, Adam (Natalie) Osborne; Amanda (Stan) Souder; Andrew (Charity) Osborne; Anthony Osborne; Russell (Seanna) Shearer; Michael (Megan) Shearer; Abraham (Holly) Osborne; Avery Osborne and her great grandchildren, Hailey; Adrian; Layton and Colton Osborne; Isabella Souder; Ava; Lucy and August Shearer and Kamryn Vankirk were the light of her life.
Hazel was a member of Clay First Baptist Church.  She enjoyed participating in the outdoor drama, “Solomon’s Secret,” spending time at the beach and caring for the family cemetery. Hazel spent her teaching career working in the Clay County School system, retiring in 1987.  She started the first girls’ basketball, track and softball programs.  She received much recognition as a coach including New River Valley Coach of the Year, WV Coaches Association Coach of the Year and Runner-Up for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year.  In 2016 she was inducted into the CCHS Athletic Hall of Fame.  Hazel could hit basketball shots from half court and once made 58 foul shots in a row. Until her illness, Hazel remained active believing exercise could cure many ailments.  She walked daily with her dog Lucky and she loved to mow grass, swim and play with her grandchildren.  She was fearless and was the calm in many storms. Hazel’s husband Pat preceded her in death, as well as her youngest son Jesse;  her parents and her sisters;  June George, Mae Workman and Nancy Legg and her brother Lanzo Moore. Visitation will be on Saturday, June 23 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Wilson Shamblin Smith Funeral Home in Clay. The funeral service will be officiated by Rocky Osborne on Sunday, June 24, at 2:00 p.m. at Clay First Baptist Church, Clay, WV.  Burial will follow at the Reedy Cemetery, Bickmore. June 20 2018   Daphney Joe Stone, 43 of Clay passed away June 12, 2018. She was preceded in death by her sister, Louise Jackson. Daphney was a loving wife and mother to her eight children and three grandchildren. She will be missed by her family and everyone who knew her. Ledford William Woods, 74, of Dille, WV passed away, Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at his residence. He was born July 21, 1943 in Clay County, WV the son of the late Otis Gill ? Pluma Young Woods. June 8 2018   Carol Diann Malcomb Smith, 53, of Ivydale, entered into rest Thursday, June 7, 2018. Born July 12, 1964, in Gassaway, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Edgar and Leona (Williams) Malcomb.  In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Murl Malcomb. She worked as a CNA for 16 years and touched so many lives.  Carol’s favorite thing in life besides looking forward to WVU football was setting on the porch watching nature and talking about how much she loved her children and her family. Not a day went by for Carol   when she did not say “I love my family”.   Carol is survived by her husband, Jason Smith; son, Patrick Smith; and daughter, Jennifer Cutlip; sisters, Connie (Kessel) Knicely and Cathy Malcomb; several nieces and nephew that she cherished as if they were her own kids. June 4 2018  Bradford Allen Salisbury, 86, of Clay, entered into rest, Sunday, June 3, 2018. Born May 1, 1932 in Enoch, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Barbara (Hamrick) Salisbury.  Bradford was born at home, in the mountains of Dog Run.  He was a devoted Christian and loved singing and playing the guitar in church and anywhere or any time someone would enjoy listening.  Talent, with his hands, wasn’t short.  Of his many accomplishments, he was a carpenter, plumber, electrician, logger, train engineer and even was known to sew a quilt or two in his time.  He loved hunting and to peddling in his shop.  He was always there for his family and will be greatly missed by them and the many people whose lives he touched over the years.  But, among everything, he was the greatest daddy ever! Bradford is survived by his wife, Maysel (Tanner) Salisbury of Clay; sons, Terry (Brenda) Salisbury of New London, OH, Tony (Yvonne) Salisbury of Clay and Teddy (Michelle) Salisbury of Clay; daughter, Trina (Terry) Burchett of Clay; sister, Mavis Adkins of Dixie; two grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. May 30 2018   Rodney Fitzwater, 74, of Fola, entered into rest Wednesday, May 30, 2018. Born October 26, 1943 in Leatherwood, he was the son of the late Wallace and Rosetta (Stewart) Fitzwater.  Rodney is survived by his wife, Rosemary Fitzwater; daughter, Felicia Dunlap; son, Keith Fitzwater and John Fitzwater; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; brother, Ricky Fitzwater; sisters, Jolene Jacobs, Mona Fitzwater and Sue Brown. May 27 2018  Joseph Gregory “Greg” Stutler, 59, of Clay, WV, passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at the residence of his daughter in Clarksburg following a 10 month illness. He was born in Akron, Ohio on January 28, 1959, a son of Joseph A. “Jiggs” and Delores A. Kester Stutler of Clarksburg.   He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Godfrey Stutler, whom he married on August 30, 1980; one son, Christopher Snow Stutler and his wife Brittany of Pullman, WV; one daughter, Michelle Dawn Klimas and her husband Graig of Clarksburg; two grandchildren, Seth and Eric Klimas; one brother, Jody Stutler and his wife April of Clarksburg; his best friend, whom he considered his brother, Kevin Nutter and his wife Debbie of Clarksburg; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.  He was also preceded in death by one brother, Bret Stutler.  Greg was a 1977 graduate of South Harrison High School and Nashville Auto Diesel Mechanic School. He was a Mechanic and Welder with Precision Pipeline and had his crane operating license. He was a mechanic for 40 years, spending more than 20 years at Fola Coal. He was known to everyone for always lending a helping hand. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, was a former member of the NRA, and enjoyed farming with his dad. Greg was a patient, kind individual whose motto was “Never give up”. May 27 2018  Hoyt Everett Newman, 77, of Clendenin went home to be with the Lord Thursday May 24, 2018 at home after a long illness. He was the son of the late Elva Geraldine Osborne Davis. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Robert Newman. Hoyt was owner and operator of the Clendenin Dairy Queen since 1977. He also worked for Columbia Gas Transmission. He was a 50 year member of Clendenin Lodge #126, Eastern Star Thelma Chapter 24 Clendenin, Scottish Rite Bodies and the Beni Kedem Shrine. Hoyt was a Korean War Veteran where he received the Korean Citation, veterans Citation for the Army in the 2nd Infantry Division. He served as Commander for the American Legion Post 61 where he received many honors, such as, Post Commander of the year Div. III in 2001. Hoyt was a member of the VFW where he served as the VFW State Junior Commander Dept. of WV. May 14 2018   Brenda Elizabeth Haag Patterson, 58, of Frametown, passed away at home May 21, 2018. She was born October 29, 1959 in Dille, WV a daughter of the late Perry Haag andIcie Marie Metheney Haag.  She was also preceded in death by son, Timothy Michael Patterson and infant granddaughter, Haley Jane Trail.   Brenda was a 1977 graduate of Clay County High School.  She was married to her high school sweetheart for almost 40 years.  She loved everyone with a compassionate heart.  Brenda was a born again Christian and knew to serve Christ was to serve others along the way.  She will be sorely missed by all those whose lives she touched. Forrest G. “Screwdriver” McKown, age 76 of Shermans Dale, PA was called home on Tuesday morning, May 15, 2018 at home with his family by his side.  Born, May 28, 1941 in “Wanego” Newton, West Virginia he was the son of the late Orland Forest “Dick” and Ruth Emogene ( Cook) McKown. Forrest began working in the oil and gas industry and later became an over the road truck driver for Bell Lines and Smith Transfer in Charleston, West Virginia.  He relocated to Pennsylvania with Smith Transfer and later worked for Carolina Freight, Consolidated Freight Ways and retired from Roadway Express.  He ended his driving career of 35 years with the Teamsters Union Local 175 and 776 after logging 3.5 million miles. He was a member of the Clay County Masonic Lodge #97 A.F.? A.M., Clay, West Virginia; Member of The House of Prayer, Maysel, West Virginia and attended New Life Assembly of God Church, Landisburg, Pennsylvania.  He is survived by his loving wife Neva J. Lantie E. Wiseman, 77, of Duck, passed away May 13, 2018. May 23 2018  Ressa Schoonover Osborne, 89, of Bickmore departed this life on Saturday, May 19, 2018 surround by her family.  Born May 10, 1929 in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late JR and Blanch Schoonover. In addition to her parents, she was as preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Homer Osborne and brothers, Billy and Jimmy Schoonover. She was a member of Lick Fork Baptist Church and a 1948 graduate of Clay County High School where she was majorette. Ressa taught school in Clay County and later was a teacher-aide for the county. She was a loving Christian, mother and grandmother. She was the voice for Solomon’s Secret Outdoor Drama when people called for directions and dates for the drama. Ressa is survived by her son, James Brock Osborne of Bickmore; daughters, Vickie Dail (John) Brown of Bickmore, Frankie Jo (Len) Alvis of Athens and Billie Shane (Wayne) Cooper of Fayetteville. James Arley Gray, 70, of Huntersville, N.C., formerly of Charleston, passed away Friday, May 4, 2018, at his home. Jim worked at ITT Carbon Industries for 26 years, retiring as vice president and treasurer. He also worked for McJunkin and Union Carbide. A U.S. Navy veteran, Jim graduated from Clay County High School and West Virginia University. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arley and Rosalee Gray, and sister, Joyce Gray Cunningham. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Connie Woods Gray; sons, Justin (Robin) Gray and Marcus (Amy) Gray; grand children, Chase and Bella Gray; sister, Sharon (Bill) Kelley; Aunts, Noda (Larry) Gay, Betty (Frank) Murphy, Evelyn Taylor and Barbara Taylor; sister-in-law, Faith Woods (Doug) Cook. Ramona Morton was born February 14, 1934 in Kayford WV to Edgar and Nona Hancock. She passed away April 7, 2018 at the Clay HealthCare center where she had been lovingly cared for six years. April 13 2018  Reba Lee Neal Shaffer, 99, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2018. She was born in Indore, Clay County on August 11, 1918 to the late Alexander (Dodd) and Maggie Neal, who both preceded her in death.  On January 29, 1938, she wed Howard Shaffer, to whom she was married for 36 years until his death in 1974. In addition to her parents and husband she was also preceded in death by her grandson, Charles Shaffer, in 1975, and four siblings, Stella Neal Hemmings, Opal Neal Baker, Hollis Neal and Roscoe Neal. Reba is survived by her two sons, Henry Shaffer and his wife, Brenda of Tucson, Arizona and David Shaffer and his wife Linda of Weston; four grandchildren, Dawn Shaffer Darnell of Cleveland, Ohio, Gretchen Shaffer Gibson and  husband Bill of Morgantown, Christian Shaffer and wife Katie of Canton, Michigan, and Marcus Shaffer and wife Gail of Charleston; six great-grandchildren, Maggey and Ryan Gibson, Adalyn and Avery Shaffer and Wendy and Will Shaffer; along with many other extended family and friends. After spending many years as a homemaker and director of the school lunch program in Widen, Reba and her family moved to Bluefield, where she worked for JC Penney.  She later retired and moved to Marmet.  In 2007, she moved to Weston to be closer to her  family, and remained in Weston until her death. Reba was a member of the Baptist Church and sang in the choir in each of the places where she lived. Her faith was very important to her and she dedicated much of her time to her church and to studying the Bible. Funeral service will be held 1:00 P.M. April 7 2018  Donna Jean Osborne began her life’s journey on August 21, 1932.  She entered her eternal home in Heaven on April 5, 2018.  Donna led a life of love, influence and devotion to her Savior. She served the master by faithfully teaching Sunday school classes for a number of years.  She made a lasting impact on the lives of many children over a span of thirty years of teaching, during which she was named Brevard County (Florida) Teacher of the Year on three separate occasions.  One of the Highlights of her public school teaching career was in 1976 when she had the honor of hosting First Lady Betty Ford at the Dedication Ceremony for Dr. W.J. Creel Elementary of School in Melbourne, Florida.  Along with her other accomplishments, it should be noted that in 1950 as a student at Glenville State College, Donna was among the first of female athletes to be in the Women’s Athletic Association.. She lettered in basketball, softball and tennis.  Her love of music and song provided the opportunity to be a part of the one hundred voices Brevard Community Choir that toured Europe in 1986. She loved to sing and had a song on her heart up to her last days. Donna is survived by her loving husband of sixty-seven years, Robert Osborne; her children, Steve Osborne and Suzie (Dennis) Legg; daughter-in-love, Susan Osborne; three grandchildren, Ashely (Britain) Kinder, Richard (Noel) Osborne and Robert (Ashley) Osborne; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Evalee Abbott, Joan Smith, Verna Dawson, Vera Williams, Shirley Braley, Sharon Hannigan, Eva June Price and Joyce Tharp; brothers, Dean, Orval, Mikel, and Reuben Neal. James Claude Hamrick, 83, of London, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, April 5, 2018, after an extended illness. Born August 30, 1934, in Putney, WV, he was the son of the late Kenneth Spencer and Myrtle Jane (Hanshaw) Hamrick.  He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Edwin and Weldon (Tot) Hamrick; and sisters, Opal Parker, Shelby Thompson and Emma Ruth Stepp.  He attended London Church of God for 31 years, where he served as Deacon.  He loved the Lord with all his heart, enjoyed collecting and selling coins and going to the flea market on Saturdays.  James is survived by his wife of 37 years, Patricia Hamrick; children, Chris (Theresa) Hamrick, Kimberlie (Robert) Brogan, David (Sara) Hamrick, Anita Janie Hamrick, John (April) Taylor, Samie Eddie) Leavitt, Kenny Hamrick, Sharon (Chris) Hager, Margaret (Calvin) Marks, and James Claude Hamrick Jr.; grandchildren, Christopher, Michael, Travis, Timmie, Andrew (Kim), Jenna, Grant, Jacobi, Justin, Gabriel, Joshua, Jason, Megan, Desarae, Patricia, Calvin, Madison, Veronica and Braxton; great-grandchildren, Khloey, Kaden, Aiden, and one on the way; brother, Otis Hamrick.  He was loved by a host of nieces and nephews and friends. March 26 2018   Emil E. Short, 83, of Wallback, passed away peacefully at home, on Saturday, March 24, 2018, after a lengthy illness. Emil was born June 20, 1934 in Roane County, to the late Tracy and Beatrice Short.  In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by three brothers; and four sisters. He graduated from Clay High School in 1952, served in the Army, afterwards he moved to Elyria, Oh and worked for companies such as Fruehauf Trailers and retired from Moen Corp in 1996. Emil inevitably moved back to his beloved family home.  He enjoyed a variety of sports, fishing, hunting and telling stories of his adventures growing up. Emily was a member of the BC?G Railroad Co-Op in Dundon, along with his wife.  Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, of 62 years, Carolyn S. Short of Wallback; son, James M. Short of Elyria, OH; daughter, Kimberly A. Short of Wallback; one grandson, Jeremy M. Mary Kaye Summer Martin, 93, passed away peacefully at her home in Grant, Florida with her family at her side on March 1, 2018. She was born in Clay, W Va. to Alexander H Summers and Nattie Young Summers. She attended and graduated from Morris Harvey College. Mary, Mike, and children moved to Eau Gallie, Florida in 1958. She then taught school in Brevard County Florida for over 25 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Mike P Martin in 1991 and son Michael P Martin III.  She loved to tell stories of growing up in Clay and went back  as often as possible to visit family and friends. She enjoyd living in Florida but her heart alway longed for the hills of West Virginia. Her favorite song was "The West Virginia Hills." No service will be held per her wishes.

March 4 2019  Mildred D. Summers went home to be with the Lord, Friday, March 2, 2018, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. She was born March 4, 1923, in Ovapa, to the late Cossie and Stella Summers. Mildred was also preceded in death by her sisters, Olive Brown, Lois Weiland, Opal Crawford and Imogene Shamblin; and brother, Harold Summers.  Mildred attended church at Ovapa Bethel Methodist Church and retired as a cashier from the Clay County Bank. She was known as a very hard worker and a loving and caring person. Mildred was considered by many of her family as a second mother. March 2 2018  Barbara Gail Lane Smith, 64, of Ivydale, entered into rest on Thursday, March 1, 2018. She was born on August 28, 1953, to the late Kenna and Clara (Lewis) Lane. Barbara was the beloved companion of the late Dallas Stutler; and was also preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. Barbara lived a full life of love and blessings with God in her heart. She enjoyed spending time with her family and going to church.  She never let her longtime illness slow her down or stop her from pursuing what made her happy and brought her joy.  Her favorite pastime was making others happy, writing poetry and reading her Bible. Larry Maynard Nichols, 76, of Servia, passed away February 5, 2018 at home.He was born August 24, 1941 at Lizemore,WV a son of the late Maynard and Jewel Mae Nichols. Larry was a coal miner, a factory worker in North Carolina and ended his coal mining career working as a security guard for Fola Coal Company.  He was a member of the Villa Nova Missionary Baptist Church, Duck where he also served as a Sunday schoolteacher.  He enjoyed working on cars, NASCAR and bird watching. He was a member of Gassaway Masonic Lodge #133. He was an Army veteran, serving as a paratrooper in the 17th Cav 82nd Airborne Division and a member of the 82nd Airborne Division Association. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy Nowlin Nichols; son, Randy Nichols of Servia; daughter, Teresa (Don) Dean of Columbia, SC; granddaughters, Jennifer (Shawn) Walker of Columbia, SC and Amanda Dean of Columbia, SC; great grandsons, Aiden and Greyson Walker; brothers, Lance (Sharon) Nichols of Whiting, IN and Steve Nichols of Page. He was preceded in death by brother, Randy Nichols and sister, Beverly Wolfe. Jan 23 2018  Madora Rodes Ballard, 96, originally a native of Gauley Bridge, WV died January 19, 2018 at Columbia Cottage in Campbelltown, PA., following a prolonged illness. She was born on October 15, 1921 in Gatewood, WV, daughter of the late Ira and Lula (McClung) Rodes. In 2003, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, J O. Ballard. She is survived by: son, Dr. James Ballard and wife, Gretchen of Hummelstown, PA; granddaughters, Sarah Ballard of Hummelstown, PA and Dr. Elizabeth Lopez of Douglassville, PA ; great granddaughters, Maya and Sonya Lopez of Douglassville, PA; her sister, Joella Etchison of Avon Park, FL., cousin, Ethel Shaver (age 101 yrs.) of Charleston, WV; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was pre-deceased by her brothers: Martin, Earl,  William and Pete Rodes. In her community, “Dorie” was known as homemaker, quilt maker and cook extraordinaire. She was devoted to the life of her church, serving as Christian education supervisor, treasurer, choir member and member of the building committee of the Gauley Bridge Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the Gauley Bridge Baptist Church, Gauley Bridge, WV. There will be a period of visitation at the church beginning at 10 a.m. that day. Pennington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Jan 20 2018  Dottie (Cutlip) Rider, 64, of Clay, entered into rest Wednesday, January 17, 2018.  Born May 22, 1953, she was the daughter of the late Woodrow and Lula (Tanner) Cutlip. In addition to her parents Dottie was also preceded in death by her grandson, Sawyer Grose. Dottie was a server at the Elkview Ponderosa for 21 years.  Dottie is survived by her husband, Jeff Rider of Clay; daughter; Candice Murphy Crowe of Harrison and step daughter, Melissa Rider of Clay; sons, Troy Grose Jr.  of Big Otter, Jason Grose of Tariff  and step son, C.J. Rider Jr. of TX; twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren;  brothers, Woodrow ”Bub” Cutlip of Big Otter and Tiger Cutlip of Ripley; sisters, Sue Burkhammer, Rosemary Grose and Tammy Ross all  of Big Otter, Debbie Cutlip of Spencer, and Ivy Fox of Ripley. Alfred Allen Cantrell Sr., 77, of Procious, passed away January 11, 2018, in CAMC General Division. Alfred was formerly employed by Ford Motor Co. and former co-owner of Cantrell Florist for 25 years. He is a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Maysel, WV. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis and Ivah Cantrell; four brothers, Porter and Jimmy Cantrell and Frank and Junior Conner, and sister, Wilma Jean Godby. Alfred is survived by his two children, Sonja and husband Tony Fore of NC and Allen and wife Tammy Cantrell of Charleston, and their mother, Betty Robinson; two step-children, Robin Fairchild of Clendenin and Randy Robinson of New Mexico, and their mother, Wanda Cantrell; three brothers, Charles Cantrell of Duck, Bruce Cantrell of OH and Elwood Cantrell of NC; four grandchildren, Jeremiah and wife April Halstead, Christie and husband Sun Joo, Josh Cantrell and Adam Cantrell; one great-grandchild, Addi; five step grandchildren, Bradley and Cody Robinson, Emilee and Jaxson Fairchild and Clay Wills; and a host of nieces and nephews. Jan 8 2018  Richard Keith “Rick” Taylor II, 36, passed away Wednesday January 3, 2018 at home. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Charles “Pete” and Sybil Taylor; maternal grandparents, Lorentz “Hoppy” and Audra Hopkins. Rick was a Welder member of Pipeline Local Union 798 Tulsa, OK. He enjoyed hunting and trout fishing, he liked working on the farm and he loved the outdoors. Rick is survived by: wife, Melissa Taylor; daughter, Sophie Kei Taylor; parents, Richard K. “Rick” and Denise Taylor; brothers, Jeremy and Matthew Taylor; nephews Parker and Logan Taylor; and niece, Addison Taylor.
