Jan 3 2019 Katherine Mitchell Shay, 88, of Newport News, VA died December 31, 2018. She was born in Old Fort, NC and moved to Chimney Corner, WV in the early 1940’s, where she resided until moving to Newport News, Virginia in 2003. She was retired from the US Postal Service, working many years in the Gauley Bridge, WV office. She sang in church choirs throughout her life as well as a soloist, performing for many weddings, memorial services and community functions, one of which included the sitting governor of WV. She was honored to share her talent anytime she was invited to sing. Katherine’s greatest joy was being a wife, mother and grandmother. She loved us fiercely and enjoyed all our family gatherings. Katherine is survived by her daughters, Debbie Johnson and husband Bill of Poquoson, VA, Beth Pridemore and husband Jim of Flatwoods, KY, and son, Kenny Mitchell and wife Karen of Lithopolis, OH. She was blessed with 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Donna Massey, Carol Bandy and brother Lloyd Whiteside and many nieces and nephews. Her husband of 35 years, Harry Mitchell, and her son, Doug Mitchell preceded her in death as well as her parents, Ralph and Esther Whiteside and brothers, Earl, Gene and Charles Whiteside. She is also preceded by Donald Shay, her husband of 12 years. Katherine will also be remembered by Don’s children, Steve, Randy, Jon, Paul and Donna. Katherine was a member of Northside Christian Church, Yorktown, VA and it’s Praymates class. A visitation for local family and friends will be held in the church atrium on Thursday, January 3rd from 4:00-7:00 p.m. She was a former member of Gum Springs Baptist Church in Chimney Corner, WV where her memorial service will be held on January 5th. Viewing and visitation will be from 12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m., followed by the service. Burial will take place at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Victor, WV. Jan 3 2019 James Edward Murphy, 79, of Wooster
passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the Cleveland Clinic. He
was born July 28, 1939 in Maysel, West Virginia, the son of Lou James and
Etta Mabel Summers Murphy. He married Jenette A. Bevins on October 4, 1958.
She survives. He retired from Bogner Construction and also worked for Hammond
Construction in his retirement. James also volunteered for Ohio’s Hospice
Lifecare. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force from 1958-1962.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Ronni (Gary) Mullins
of Lugoff, SC and Jacki (Steve) Zody of Wooster; grandchildren, Ryan Scott
(Jessica) Mullins, Riley Michael (Angie) Mullins, Colton Jacob Zody, Zachary

Dec 27 2018 Herbert Daniel Nutter, 87, of
Hurricane, passed away December 25, 2018, at Hubbard Hospice House, West.
Born February 4, 1931, in Gad, WV, Herbert was a son of the late Perry
and Lena Nutter. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death
by his six brothers: Harry, Cecil, Shorty, Boa, Keith, and Ed; and sister:
Everette Pierson. Herbert served his country in the United States Army,
during the Korean War, stationed in Korea and Japan. He retired from Sears
with over 30 years of service, in various roles within the company. Herbert
also had a passion for music. He was a songwriter and played the guitar
and loved country music. Herb Nutter was one of the good guys. He was loved
by many. He is survived by his children and their spouses: Theresa Haney
(David) of Hurricane and Danny Nutter (Tammy) of Winchester, KY; three
grandchildren, Taylor Ann Haney, Zachary Daniel Nutter and Hayden Paige
Nutter; great-grandson, Weston Scott Lee; and sister, Eva Stover of Dunbar.
Funeral service will be held at noon on Friday, December 28, at Chapman

Eric Jason Thacker, cherished husband, father, son, brother, and uncle, passed away suddenly on December 19th. Eric was born January 19, 1986, in Columbus, Ohio. Eric was a 2004 graduate of Clay High School and received his doctorate of Pharmacy degree in 2011 from the University of Charleston in W.Va. He was an exceptional pharmacist, employed at CAMC Memorial division in Charleston, W.Va, where he was well known for his deep concern and well-being of patients and colleagues. Eric was a Christian, and full of compassion and love for others. He cherished his wife, daughters, and soon to be born son. Eric will be forever remembered by his wife, Jennifer; daughters, Nora and Evie; and unborn son, Owen Jason. Aileen Ehman Wrenn, 85, of Charleston, W.Va., died
peacefully in her sleep at home on December 19, 2018. Aileen was born on
December 28, 1932, in Clay, W.Va. She was predeceased by her parents,
Mary Alice Jones and Harry Thomas of Clay; her first husband of two years,
Clarence "Henry" Ehman of Charleston; her beloved second husband of 45
years, Kenneth Frederick "Fred" Wrenn Jr. of Charleston; siblings, Carolyn
Thomas of Clay, Joyce Stockwell Kendall of Charleston and Angelo Thomas
(Donna) of Rancho Cordova, Calif.
Aileen graduated from Clay County High School
in 1952 and moved to Charleston shortly thereafter. She married Henry,
and after his tragic death, met and married Fred Wrenn while they both
worked at United Fuel / Columbia Gas Transmission. With the birth of their
first child, Aileen left employment and dedicated herself to being mother,
and then grandmother, to her own family, but also opened her loving arms
to friends young and old whom she embraced with unsurpassed warmth, kindness,
wisdom and humor. Of all things, she delighted in her precious grandchildren
and took being a Grandma very seriously.
She loved taming wild squirrels and birds,
took delight in all things green and growing, was passionate about supplying
pawpaw fruit to Ellen's Ice Cream each summer, loved dancing to Eric Clapton's
music, and was always there to help, nurture, heal and support her family.
Aileen also enjoyed travel, and she and Fred visited many countries together
before his passing. She also traveled to Nags Head, N.C., nearly every
summer for the past 46 years to vacation with her family and friends at
her beloved Sea Foam Motel. She was a 50-plus year member of First Presbyterian
Church of Charleston, and lived her life as an example of Christian grace.
Her strength and love will forever be cherished
in the lives of her three daughters, Diane (Tod) Holcomb, Marilyn Wrenn
(Stephen Haynes) and Leslie (Scot) Drake; grandchildren, Connor Mason Haynes,
Emily Wrenn Harrell, Jonathan Frederick Harrell and Gabrielle Madison Drake,
all of Charleston; sister, Jean Samples of Norwalk, Ohio; and brother,
Steve (Eva) Thomas of Clay. She will also be remembered and missed by many
nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends and family.
The family would like to particularly express
appreciation for the friendship and kindness of her neighbors, Julia Schaul,
and Ron and Gina Butler, who added so much joy to her life.

Margaret enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and playing cards. Margaret is preceded in death by her husband Earl F. Ethel was the daughter of the late Harrison and Rebecca Nichols. Dec 3 2018 Dorma Marvis Sutton, It is with great sadness that the family of Dorma (Marvis) Sutton announces her passing, after a brief illness, on Saturday, December 1, 2018. She lived 88 beautiful years and will be remembered as a strong, independent woman and a friend to all. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Bob) Sutton and a sister, Betty Jarvis. Marvis graduated from Clay County High School with the class of 1948 and regularly attended class reunions. After graduating from Glenville State College, she taught school in Clay County for eight years. She gave up her teaching career to be with her children, and later returned as a post mistress at the Tariff Post Office for over thirty years. Marvis is survived by three children; two sons, Harry David (Brenda), Bobby (Rita) and daughter, Marilyn (RK) Taylor. She had five grandchildren, David and Robby Sutton, Melissa (Steve) Kershner, and Colter and Cassidy Taylor. She also had one great-granddaughter, Jailynn Kershner. Dec 3 2018 Dylan Cole Grose, 19, of Big Otter, went to his heavenly home on November 30, 2018, due to a tragic car accident. He was a graduate of Clay County High School and was employed by Blue Flame Pipeline. He attended Nebo Baptist Church. Dylan lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed football, Jeeping, 4-H camp, and beating his friends at various video games. He loved singing for Jesus. He was a beloved son, brother, grandson, and a friend to all that knew him. He never met a stranger and always had a smile on his face. He was the son of the late Robert and Kelsie McIntosh Salyers. Clinton was a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Clay, W.Va., and he was also an employee of CORE Appalachia and United Steel Workers, Local 628, in Charleston, W.Va. Oct 12 2018 Hollie D. Workman, a fellow disciple of Jesus Christ, has left this world to be with our Lord and his forefathers; to live forever in a place not made by hands. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a truck driver after WWII. He graduated from Fairmont State College in Fairmont, West Virginia, and was a member of Adoniram Masonic Lodge. Oct 5 2018 Kerry Duane Davis, 50, of Maysel, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, on Friday, October 5, 2018. Born on May 24, 1968, to Ralph and Linda (Pauley) Davis. Kerry’s life was an adventure from the beginning. His greatest joys were his family, church family and friends. He was a member of Clay First Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as an usher and member of the choir. Kerry worked for nearly 30 years at Clay County Services Unlimited. He took great pride in his job and often insisted on going to work, even if the workshop was closed. In 2010, Kerry was thrilled to receive the Work Center Employee of the Year Award. A graduate of Clay County High School, Kerry supported the Panther football team on the field at nearly every home game for as long as he was physically able. Kerry was always ready with an encouraging hug or high-five. He made people smile wherever he went. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents. Oct 3 2018 THELMA M. LEE, 87, of Spencer, West Virginia formerly of Clay, West Virginia and Logan, West Virginia died Saturday, September 29, 2018 at her home after an extended illness. She was born May 2, 1931 in Matewan, West Virginia a daughter of the late Charles F. and Goldie Patton Puckett. Thelma was a lifelong student and educator. She graduated from Logan High School and received her Bachelor's Degree from West Virginia State in Elementary Education. She later attended the West Virginia College of Graduate Studes (COGS) where she received her Master's Degree in Remedial Education. She started her career as a teacher's aide for the Clay County School Systems, then became a teacher at Clay Elementary and later retired as a teacher for the West Virginia Rehabilitation Center in Adult Education. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Spencer. Thelma is survived by one son, Charles W. Lee of Spencer; five grandchildren, James Christopher (JC) Lee of Ripley, West Virginia, and Kimberly Lee, Taylor Lee, Tyler Lee and Adalynn "Addie" Lee, all of Spencer; and three great-grandchildren, Macy Lee and Caden and Clay Cottrell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 2012, Harold A. Lee, West Virginia State Police, Retired. Also proceeding her where her siblings, Edward and Phillip Puckett, Pearl "Bo" Jordan, Margaret "Sissy" Gresham, Edna "Chey" Maynard, and an infant, Russell Addison Lee. Sept 21 2018 Charles Phillip Heltman, 80, gained his heavenly wings on Wednesday, September 19, 2018. He was a Vietnam Veteran, proudly serving the US Navy for 20 years. He was also a lineman for Bell Atlantic for almost 20 years; He was a past secretary for the Masonic Lodge in Madison. Charles also was a member of Gauley Bridge Baptist Church. 11, 2018, after a long battle with Lewy body dementia. On November 18,
1939 in Kermit, WV, she was the daughter, of the late Burley and Stella
(Pack) Spaulding. In addition to her parents she was also preceded
in death by her husband, Carl Walls; brother, Thurmond and sister, Sharon.
She was the oldest of ten children. Elizabeth is survived by her sons,
Ronald Walls of Frametown and David Walls of Clay; daughter, Sheila Shackleford
or Rossville, GA; grandchildren, Austin Buford of GA, Ron Walls of Ripley,
Kelli Eagle of Nitro, Brittney Boggs of Elkview, Alyssa Neal of St. Albans,

Sept 12 2018 Simpson B. Neal, 76, of Bickmore,
went
home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at Cabel Huntington
Hospital after an extended illness. Born on Easter Sunday, April
5, 1942, he was the son of Vernon and Leslie Neal. In addition to his parents,
he was preceded in death by his brother, Elmo Neal; sisters, Arlene Coen,
Catherine Holcomb and Mozelle Cruikshank. He was a 1961 graduate
of Clay County High School where he was a member of the band and played
the tuba. Simpson attended WVU.IT. He loved astronomy and looking at and
studying the stars, Ham radios and was a jack of all trades. He was a member
and a deacon at the Lick Fork Baptist Church, where he also played the
piano, taught Sunday school and was a Sunday school superintendent.
In years past he was a member of the Sun Lighters Quartet and the Neal
Family Singers. He was retired from Sears with 32 years of service.
He was the best dad and papaw in the world. He was very proud of his grand
daughters and his three great-grandchildren. Those left to cherish
his memory are his loving wife, of 53 years, Martha Neal of Bickmore; daughter,
Tammy Neal Cooper and husband Bill of Gauley Bridge; granddaughters, Kelli
Grubb and husband Shandon of Fayetteville; Stephanie Oxley and husband
James of Hinton; great-grandchildren, Dillon Grubb, Adalynn Grubb and Piper

Sept 9 2018 On Tuesday, September 4, 2018, Marcus
Lee Sigman, 14, was chosen by the lord to start his search for that
big honey hole in the sky. Which he has undoubtedly tested every
water hole in site. On March 26, 2004 our family was blessed with
two beautiful babies. Marcus and his twin brother and partner in crime,
Mason. Marcus grew into a handsome young man, he however was never alone.
If you saw Marcus, Mason wasn’t far behind. Marcus enjoyed playing
football, playing in the creek, if you couldn’t find him, you for sure
knew he was doing what he loved, fishing. He loved his family as much as
they loved him. He attended Clay and Calhoun Schools, where he acquired
many friends. He had a smile that was contagious, but You knew he was up
to something when you saw his crooked smile. He had a heart of gold.
Marcus is survived by his mother Monica (Kenneth) Nicholas; father Jerry
(Geneva) Sigman; siblings, whom he loved and cherished so much, Logan Allen,

Aug 30 2018 Roy Jackson Nida Jr. well known as “JACK”. He was the only son of Roy Jackson Nida Sr. and Ruby Gladys Looney. He was born on December 02, 1930 in Amma, West Virginia. He attended Amma Elementary School, Spencer High School where he won the school championship in table tennis. Jack joined the U.S.A.F and spent the next four years at Lockland Air Force Base in San Antonio Texas as a Supply Sergeant. Jack attended Charleston School of Commerce where he graduated with a diploma in Accounting. He also attended Morris Harvey College, now Charleston University where he studied Chemistry and Engineering. He worked at Union Carbide, and founded Advanced Chemicals Products/ Neoprene International Corp.. He lived at Amma, Boston, Chicago and Atlanta. Jack married his lovely wife Norma Jean Nida on August 28,1959; he had two children, Randall and Sandra, Jack had daughter in- law Zuany; three grandchildren.,Randall Jr., James Jackson and Thomas Jefferson. Jack enjoyed playing musical instruments, writing, gardening, genealogy, traveling, hunting and fishing. Jack was small business owner, musician, veteran and writer. Jack was the author of “The Family Von Nida, From Germany to America 1262-1998”. He attended historical society meetings and was a “Son of the American Revolution”. William "Billy" Gratz August 12, 1947 - August 12, 2018 William “Billy” Gratz, age 71, of Lorain, passed away while under the care of New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, at his home surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, August 12, 2018. He was born on August 12, 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland, but raised in West Virginia. After Clay High graduation, he moved to Lorain. Billy was a left hand body floor man for Ford Motor Company, Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake for 35 years, before retiring from there in 2003. After retirement, he kept himself out of trouble by working as a bus monitor for First Student. While working there, he was proudly part of the group that affectionately referred to themselves as “The Dream Team.” Billy truly enjoyed what he did and always looked forward to going to work. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Any free time he had, Billy loved to get out and cruise on his Harley anywhere he could. He liked being outside and enjoying the warm sunshine. You could usually find him sitting outside of his house just being content watching the traffic go by, if he wasn’t out on his bike. He liked working crossword puzzles and playing solitaire on the computer. His greatest love in life was his grandchildren. They had a special place in his heart that he cherished. William is survived by his wife of 21 years, Martha Sue (nee Schrader) Gratz, his children; Timothy (Amanda) Gratz, Steven (Billie Jo) Gratz, Robert (Connie) Gratz, Clayton Parker, and Scotty Parker, his 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and his siblings; Barb, Wilma, Richard, Sharon, Ronald, and Naomi. WV passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at the Bellaire at Devonshire
assisted living facility in Scott Depot, WV. He was born on August 12,
1937 in Charleston, WV to the late Luther Gibson and Gladys (Strickland)
Gibson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister
Barbara Underwood. Scott in survived by wife, Margaret (Self) Gibson
whom he shared 45 years of marriage together. Scott is also survived by,
son M. Scott Gibson, Jr. and wife, Crystal of Clay, WV; daughters Pamela
Thistlethwaite and husband, Danny of South Charleston, WV and Amy Arrington
and husband, Joe of Gallipolis Ferry, WV. Also surviving grandchildren
Ian Thistlethwaite, Alex Thistlethwaite Parra and husband Carlos, Trent
Gibson, Kylie Arrington, and Colton Arrington, and great-grandchildren,
Daniella and Lily Parra . In addition to his wife, children, grandchildren
and great-grandchildren, and is survived by one brother, Morgan Gibson
and wife, Joyce of Clay, WV, and nieces, nephews, and cousins. He
graduated from Clay County High School and then attended Glenville
State College, and later the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He
was a longtime member of the West Virginia Funeral Director Association.
Scott spent many years at the Carl Wilson Funeral Home, in Clay County,
WV. He owned and operated the Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home from 1972 until
his health declined and was unable to. He was a member of the Strange Creek
Masonic Lodge #130 AF and AM . He was a past Director of the City National
Banks.

Myrtie “Jo” (Conley) Singleton, 85, of 586 Front Street, Burnsville, WV slipped away during the early morning hours on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at her residence. Mrs. Singleton was born on August 28, 1932 at Benny’s Run, WV to the late Roy “Hub” David Conley and Sis (Ratliff) Conley. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two infant children William and Marty, brother Phillip Conley, sisters Betty Williams, Madeline Shock, son in law Cermit Ramsey, brother-in-law Ray Williams, and brother-in-law Thermon Shock On November 3, 1952 she married her loving husband of 65 years Marvin F. Singleton who survives. Also surviving are children Scott W. Singleton and wife Robin of Burnsville, WV, JoAnn “Sis” Ramsey of Clay, WV, David “Will” K. Singleton and wife Brenda of Weston, Kathy L. In her spare time she enjoyed to fish, and tried to make it to play cards every week, and enjoyed to travel some of her favorite trips were to Florida and in Tennessee where she visited Knoxville, Dollywood, and Graceland. Mrs. Singleton was a truly selfless person she always put everyone else first especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Auddis work for the Hoop and Holler Phone Company owned by Murry Smith and later retired from Contel Phone Company after 33 years of service. He loved his camp in Lilly, hunting, fishing, woodworking and going to summer / fall festivals and meeting people. Auddis also loved WVU football and basketball, loved being a Mountaineer and his Mt. July 6 2018 Christina (Albright) Jones, 35, of
Glasgow, formerly of Clay, received her angelic wings on Sunday,
July 1, 2018. Born August 10, 1982, in Montgomery, she was the daughter
of Helen Ann (Harold) Cummings. Christy spent her childhood in Clay and
is a 1998 graduate of Clay County High School. After a few years spent
as a CNA, fate brought her back to her high school sweetheart Jeremiah
Jones; they were married June 22, 2005, from their love two children were
born, Madison Hope Albright Jones (13) and Allison Faith Jones (9) they
were her most valuable treasures. She devoted herself to being a great
wife and mother. Wherever she went she made the best of everything,
she was always smiling and trying to help others. In addition to
her mother and step father; husband; and daughter; Christy leaves behind
her brothers, Thomas Albright, Brandon White; sisters, Karen O’Neil, BJ
and Norma Jean and many in laws; nieces and nephews; and a couple of special

She was a retail clerk at GC Murphy Department Store and a member of the Boomer Baptist Church. Born September 23, 1932, in Huntington, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Franklin and Lennie Virginia (Spears) Gregory. June 25 2018 O. Gene King Sr., 81, of Clay, entered
into rest June 17, 2018. Born August 19, 1937, in Clay County, he was the
son of the late Robert Preston King and Mamie Ethel Woodrum King. In addition
to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Garrett
King, Earl King, and Jerry King. His sisters, Nina Faye King, Irene Hardman,
Ivy Wells, and Agnes Beckett also preceded him in death. Gene served in
the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1958. He was retired from Union
Carbide where he worked for 20-plus years. He also worked as the Clay Chief
of Police and later as a Clay County Court Bailiff. Gene was an avid WVU
fan and active in local politics. Gene was always giving of his time for
others and served the people of Clay County as a member of the Clay Board
of Education for over 35 years. He also actively participated in the Lion's
Club and Masonic Order of Masons. Survivors include his son, O. Gene King
Jr. (Angie) of Clay and daughter Kathy (Marion) Roby of Harrisville; two
grandchildren, Robert Roby and Jennifer Roby; three great-grandchildren;
a sister, Audrey Oxley; and several nieces and nephews. O. Gene King Sr.
donated his body to WVU School of Medicine for research. A memorial service
will be determined at a later date at the convenience of the family.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the American
Lung Association.

June 22 2018 Clay - Hazel Reedy Shearer, a
beautiful and Godly woman, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on
June 21, 2018. Hazel’s journey began on October 6, 1927 in Bickmore;
she was the second of four daughters of Jesse and Ocie Osborne Reedy. In
1943, while a student at Clay County High School, Hazel met the very handsome
Russell Patrick Shearer (Pat) of Clay. Truly smitten from the beginning,
Pat tried to convince Hazel to marry him when they were only 13 years old.
They both went on to graduate, and Hazel also graduated from Glenville
State College with her teaching degree in 1950, while Pat went on to serve
our country in the military. The two lovebirds finally married at
the age of 25 on January 9, 1953 at Hazel’s parent’s home in Bickmore.
After marrying, Pat and Hazel quickly began their family. Their children
are: Russell Patrick (Joyce) Shearer, Jr., Rachel Frances Shearer
(Rocky) Osborne, Roberta Reedy Shearer (Barry) Faile and Ritchie Jesse
Shearer. Hazel’s grandchildren, Adam (Natalie) Osborne; Amanda (Stan) Souder;
Andrew (Charity) Osborne; Anthony Osborne; Russell (Seanna) Shearer; Michael
(Megan) Shearer; Abraham (Holly) Osborne; Avery Osborne and her great grandchildren,
Hailey; Adrian; Layton and Colton Osborne; Isabella Souder; Ava; Lucy and
August Shearer and Kamryn Vankirk were the light of her life.
Hazel was a member of Clay First Baptist Church.
She enjoyed participating in the outdoor drama, “Solomon’s Secret,” spending
time at the beach and caring for the family cemetery. Hazel spent her teaching
career working in the Clay County School system, retiring in 1987.
She started the first girls’ basketball, track and softball programs.
She received much recognition as a coach including New River Valley Coach
of the Year, WV Coaches Association Coach of the Year and Runner-Up for
the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year.
In 2016 she was inducted into the CCHS Athletic Hall of Fame. Hazel
could hit basketball shots from half court and once made 58 foul shots
in a row. Until her illness, Hazel remained active believing exercise could
cure many ailments. She walked daily with her dog Lucky and she loved
to mow grass, swim and play with her grandchildren. She was fearless
and was the calm in many storms. Hazel’s husband Pat preceded her in death,
as well as her youngest son Jesse; her parents and her sisters;
June George, Mae Workman and Nancy Legg and her brother Lanzo Moore. Visitation
will be on Saturday, June 23 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Wilson Shamblin
Smith Funeral Home in Clay. The funeral service will be officiated by Rocky

June 4 2018 Bradford Allen Salisbury, 86, of
Clay, entered into rest, Sunday, June 3, 2018. Born May 1, 1932 in
Enoch, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Barbara (Hamrick) Salisbury.
Bradford was born at home, in the mountains of Dog Run. He was a
devoted Christian and loved singing and playing the guitar in church and
anywhere or any time someone would enjoy listening. Talent, with
his hands, wasn’t short. Of his many accomplishments, he was a carpenter,
plumber, electrician, logger, train engineer and even was known to sew
a quilt or two in his time. He loved hunting and to peddling in his
shop. He was always there for his family and will be greatly missed
by them and the many people whose lives he touched over the years.
But, among everything, he was the greatest daddy ever! Bradford is survived
by his wife, Maysel (Tanner) Salisbury of Clay; sons, Terry (Brenda) Salisbury

May 27 2018 Joseph Gregory “Greg” Stutler, 59, of Clay, WV, passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at the residence of his daughter in Clarksburg following a 10 month illness. He was born in Akron, Ohio on January 28, 1959, a son of Joseph A. “Jiggs” and Delores A. Kester Stutler of Clarksburg. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Godfrey Stutler, whom he married on August 30, 1980; one son, Christopher Snow Stutler and his wife Brittany of Pullman, WV; one daughter, Michelle Dawn Klimas and her husband Graig of Clarksburg; two grandchildren, Seth and Eric Klimas; one brother, Jody Stutler and his wife April of Clarksburg; his best friend, whom he considered his brother, Kevin Nutter and his wife Debbie of Clarksburg; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Bret Stutler. Greg was a 1977 graduate of South Harrison High School and Nashville Auto Diesel Mechanic School. He was a Mechanic and Welder with Precision Pipeline and had his crane operating license. He was a mechanic for 40 years, spending more than 20 years at Fola Coal. He was known to everyone for always lending a helping hand. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, was a former member of the NRA, and enjoyed farming with his dad. May 27 2018 Hoyt Everett Newman, 77, of Clendenin
went home to be with the Lord Thursday May 24, 2018 at home after a long
illness. He was the son of the late Elva Geraldine Osborne Davis. He was
also preceded in death by his brother, Robert Newman. Hoyt was owner and
operator of the Clendenin Dairy Queen since 1977. He also worked for Columbia
Gas Transmission. He was a 50 year member of Clendenin Lodge #126, Eastern
Star Thelma Chapter 24 Clendenin, Scottish Rite Bodies and the Beni Kedem
Shrine. Hoyt was a Korean War Veteran where he received the Korean Citation,
veterans Citation for the Army in the 2nd Infantry Division. He served
as Commander for the American Legion Post 61 where he received many honors,
such as, Post Commander of the year Div. III in 2001. Hoyt was a member
of the VFW where he served as the VFW State Junior Commander Dept. of WV.
He is survived by: wife, Sandy Ryder Newman; daughter, Angela (Scott) Freyberg;
son, Paul (Tina) Newman; grandsons, Joshua Newman, Jacob (Amy) Elkins and
Jared Freyberg; great granddaughters, Aubrey and Allyson Elkins; sister,
Julia Davis; special friends, Homer Rucker, Sam Harper, Jim Shafer, Jack

May 14 2018 Brenda Elizabeth Haag Patterson, 58, of Frametown, passed away at home May 21, 2018. She was born October 29, 1959 in Dille, WV a daughter of the late Perry Haag andIcie Marie Metheney Haag. Forrest G. “Screwdriver” McKown, age 76 of Shermans Dale, PA was called home on Tuesday morning, May 15, 2018 at home with his family by his side. Born, May 28, 1941 in “Wanego” Newton, West Virginia he was the son of the late Orland Forest “Dick” and Ruth Emogene ( Cook) McKown. Forrest began working in the oil and gas industry and later became an over the road truck driver for Bell Lines and Smith Transfer in Charleston, West Virginia. He relocated to Pennsylvania with Smith Transfer and later worked for Carolina Freight, Consolidated Freight Ways and retired from Roadway Express. He ended his driving career of 35 years with the Teamsters Union Local 175 and 776 after logging 3.5 million miles. He was a member of the Clay County Masonic Lodge #97 A.F.? A.M., Clay, West Virginia; Member of The House of Prayer, Maysel, West Virginia and attended New Life Assembly of God Church, Landisburg, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his loving wife Neva J. Lantie E. Wiseman, 77, of Duck, passed away May 13, 2018. He was born August 15, 1940 in Clay County a son of the late Jesse and Ellen Yost Wiseman. Lantie was an appliance repairman. He loved to hunt, fish, woodwork and work on guns. He was an Air Force veteran. May 23 2018 Ressa Schoonover Osborne, 89, of
Bickmore departed this life on Saturday, May 19, 2018 surround by her
family. Born May 10, 1929 in Clay County, she was the daughter of
the late JR and Blanch Schoonover. In addition to her parents, she was
as preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Homer Osborne and brothers,
Billy and Jimmy Schoonover. She was a member of Lick Fork Baptist Church
and a 1948 graduate of Clay County High School where she was majorette.
Ressa taught school in Clay County and later was a teacher-aide for the
county. She was a loving Christian, mother and grandmother. She was the
voice for Solomon’s Secret Outdoor Drama when people called for directions
and dates for the drama. Ressa is survived by her son, James Brock Osborne
of Bickmore; daughters, Vickie Dail (John) Brown of Bickmore, Frankie Jo
(Len) Alvis of Athens and Billie Shane (Wayne) Cooper of Fayetteville.
She was more than a grandmother to her seven grandchildren, Shannon Brown,
Chastity Shalon (Brian) Moore, Jonathan (Renee) Brown, Tiffany (Aaron)
Boggess, Alisha (Adam) Taylor, Trinity Cooper and Kevin (Leslie) Alvis;
eight great-grandchildren, Corey (Felicia) Mays, Nathaniel and Keaton Brown,
Kinsley and Lauren Boggess, Wyatt and Shelby Moore, Lucas Alvis and baby
girl Taylor due in September; two-great-great grandchildren, Kayson and
Kohen Mays; sister, Betty Neal of Bickmore; many nieces and nephews and

James Arley Gray, 70, of Huntersville, N.C., formerly of Charleston, passed away Friday, May 4, 2018, at his home. Jim worked at ITT Carbon Industries for 26 years, retiring as vice president and treasurer. He also worked for McJunkin and Union Carbide. A U.S. Navy veteran, Jim graduated from Clay County High School and West Virginia University. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arley and Rosalee Gray, and sister, Joyce Gray Cunningham. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Connie Woods Gray; sons, Justin (Robin) Gray and Marcus (Amy) Gray; grand children, Chase and Bella Gray; sister, Sharon (Bill) Kelley; Aunts, Noda (Larry) Gay, Betty (Frank) Murphy, Evelyn Taylor and Barbara Taylor; sister-in-law, Faith Woods (Doug) Cook. Jim and Connie loved to travel and visited all 50 states and many foreign countries. They drove across the country nine times, including a 12,500-mile round trip to Fairbanks, Alaska. One of their favorite adventures was a 35-day train trip across Europe. Jim's favorite activities were trout fishing the rivers of West Virginia with his sons and walking the shore at the beach h ome he retired to in Myrtle Beach, S.C., always on the hunt for sharks' teeth. by his family. Born February 19, 1937 in Gauley Bridge, he was the
son of the late James and Cora (Kinser) Elswick. George was a caring
son, husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of the Pentecostal
Holiness faith and worked at Elswick Lumber Company from the age of 15
until the saw mill closed in 2009. He served in the U.S. Army for
2 years and was stationed at Ft. Meade. MD. George is survived by

April 13 2018 Reba Lee Neal Shaffer, 99, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2018. She was born in Indore, Clay County on August 11, 1918 to the late Alexander (Dodd) and Maggie Neal, who both preceded her in death. On January 29, 1938, she wed Howard Shaffer, to whom she was married for 36 years until his death in 1974. In addition to her parents and husband she was also preceded in death by her grandson, Charles Shaffer, in 1975, and four siblings, Stella Neal Hemmings, Opal Neal Baker, Hollis Neal and Roscoe Neal. Reba is survived by her two sons, Henry Shaffer and his wife, Brenda of Tucson, Arizona and David Shaffer and his wife Linda of Weston; four grandchildren, Dawn Shaffer Darnell of Cleveland, Ohio, Gretchen Shaffer Gibson and husband Bill of Morgantown, Christian Shaffer and wife Katie of Canton, Michigan, and Marcus Shaffer and wife Gail of Charleston; six great-grandchildren, Maggey and Ryan Gibson, Adalyn and Avery Shaffer and Wendy and Will Shaffer; along with many other extended family and friends. After spending many years as a homemaker and director of the school lunch program in Widen, Reba and her family moved to Bluefield, where she worked for JC Penney. She later retired and moved to Marmet. In 2007, she moved to Weston to be closer to her family, and remained in Weston until her death. Reba was a member of the Baptist Church and sang in the choir in each of the places where she lived. Her faith was very important to her and she dedicated much of her time to her church and to studying the Bible. Funeral service will be held 1:00 P.M. April 7 2018 Donna Jean Osborne began her life’s journey on August 21, 1932. She entered her eternal home in Heaven on April 5, 2018. Donna led a life of love, influence and devotion to her Savior. She served the master by faithfully teaching Sunday school classes for a number of years. She made a lasting impact on the lives of many children over a span of thirty years of teaching, during which she was named Brevard County (Florida) Teacher of the Year on three separate occasions. One of the Highlights of her public school teaching career was in 1976 when she had the honor of hosting First Lady Betty Ford at the Dedication Ceremony for Dr. W.J. Creel Elementary of School in Melbourne, Florida. Along with her other accomplishments, it should be noted that in 1950 as a student at Glenville State College, Donna was among the first of female athletes to be in the Women’s Athletic Association.. She lettered in basketball, softball and tennis. Her love of music and song provided the opportunity to be a part of the one hundred voices Brevard Community Choir that toured Europe in 1986. She loved to sing and had a song on her heart up to her last days. Donna is survived by her loving husband of sixty-seven years, Robert Osborne; her children, Steve Osborne and Suzie (Dennis) Legg; daughter-in-love, Susan Osborne; three grandchildren, Ashely (Britain) Kinder, Richard (Noel) Osborne and Robert (Ashley) Osborne; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Evalee Abbott, Joan Smith, Verna Dawson, Vera Williams, Shirley Braley, Sharon Hannigan, Eva June Price and Joyce Tharp; brothers, Dean, Orval, Mikel, and Reuben Neal. James Claude Hamrick, 83, of London, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, April 5, 2018, after an extended illness. Born August 30, 1934, in Putney, WV, he was the son of the late Kenneth Spencer and Myrtle Jane (Hanshaw) Hamrick. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Edwin and Weldon (Tot) Hamrick; and sisters, Opal Parker, Shelby Thompson and Emma Ruth Stepp. He attended London Church of God for 31 years, where he served as Deacon. He loved the Lord with all his heart, enjoyed collecting and selling coins and going to the flea market on Saturdays. He graduated from Clay High School in 1952, served in the Army, afterwards he moved to Elyria, Oh and worked for companies such as Fruehauf Trailers and retired from Moen Corp in 1996. Emil inevitably moved back to his beloved family home. He enjoyed a variety of sports, fishing, hunting and telling stories of his adventures growing up. Emily was a member of the BC?G Railroad Co-Op in Dundon, along with his wife. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, of 62 years, Carolyn S. Short of Wallback; son, James M. Mary Kaye Summer Martin, 93, passed away peacefully at her home in Grant, Florida with her family at her side on March 1, 2018. She was born in Clay, W Va. to Alexander H Summers and Nattie Young Summers. She attended and graduated from Morris Harvey College. Mary, Mike, and children moved to Eau Gallie, Florida in 1958. She then taught school in Brevard County Florida for over 25 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Mike P Martin in 1991 and son Michael P Martin III. She loved to tell stories of growing up in Clay and went back as often as possible to visit family and friends. She enjoyd living in Florida but her heart alway longed for the hills of West Virginia. Her favorite song was "The West Virginia Hills." No service will be held per her wishes.

Larry Maynard Nichols, 76, of Servia, passed away
February 5, 2018 at home.He was born August 24, 1941 at Lizemore,WV
a son of the late Maynard and Jewel Mae Nichols. Larry was a coal miner,
a factory worker in North Carolina and ended his coal mining career working
as a security guard for Fola Coal Company. He was a member of the
Villa Nova Missionary Baptist Church, Duck where he also served as a Sunday
schoolteacher. He enjoyed working on cars, NASCAR and bird watching.
He was a member of Gassaway Masonic Lodge #133. He was an Army veteran,
serving as a paratrooper in the 17th Cav 82nd Airborne Division and a member
of the 82nd Airborne Division Association. He is survived by his wife of
53 years, Dorothy Nowlin Nichols; son, Randy Nichols of Servia; daughter,
Teresa (Don) Dean of Columbia, SC; granddaughters, Jennifer (Shawn) Walker
of Columbia, SC and Amanda Dean of Columbia, SC; great grandsons, Aiden
and Greyson Walker; brothers, Lance (Sharon) Nichols of Whiting, IN and
Steve Nichols of Page. He was preceded in death by brother, Randy Nichols

She is survived by: son, Dr. James Ballard and wife, Gretchen of Hummelstown, PA; granddaughters, Sarah Ballard of Hummelstown, PA and Dr. Elizabeth Lopez of Douglassville, PA ; great granddaughters, Maya and Sonya Lopez of Douglassville, PA; her sister, Joella Etchison of Avon Park, FL., cousin, Ethel Shaver (age 101 yrs.) of Charleston, WV; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was pre-deceased by her brothers: Martin, Earl, William and Pete Rodes. In her community, “Dorie” was known as homemaker, quilt maker and cook extraordinaire. She was devoted to the life of her church, serving as Christian education supervisor, treasurer, choir member and member of the building committee of the Gauley Bridge Baptist Church. Jan 20 2018 Dottie (Cutlip) Rider, 64, of Clay, entered into rest Wednesday, January 17, 2018. Born May 22, 1953, she was the daughter of the late Woodrow and Lula (Tanner) Cutlip. Alfred Allen Cantrell Sr., 77, of Procious, passed
away January 11, 2018, in CAMC General Division. Alfred was formerly employed
by Ford Motor Co. and former co-owner of Cantrell Florist for 25 years.
He is a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Maysel, WV. He was preceded in
death by his parents, Dennis and Ivah Cantrell; four brothers, Porter and
Jimmy Cantrell and Frank and Junior Conner, and sister, Wilma Jean Godby.
Alfred is survived by his two children, Sonja and husband Tony Fore of
NC and Allen and wife Tammy Cantrell of Charleston, and their mother, Betty
Robinson; two step-children, Robin Fairchild of Clendenin and Randy Robinson
of New Mexico, and their mother, Wanda Cantrell; three brothers, Charles
Cantrell of Duck, Bruce Cantrell of OH and Elwood Cantrell of NC; four
grandchildren, Jeremiah and wife April Halstead, Christie and husband Sun
Joo, Josh Cantrell and Adam Cantrell; one great-grandchild, Addi; five
step grandchildren, Bradley and Cody Robinson, Emilee and Jaxson Fairchild
and Clay Wills; and a host of nieces and nephews. A tribute to the life
