Dec 31 2012  Ollie Ann Whittaker, 90, of Swiss, entered into rest December 29, 2012. Born on June 4, 1922, in Nicholas County, she was the daughter of the late Christopher Columbus and Mary Elswick Rucker. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, William Callous Whattaker and her step-son, Delbert Whittaker. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Linda L. Whittaker of Swiss and Mary Lee Preast (Mike) of Portsmouth, OH and her grandchildren, Christopher and Matthew Preast, both of Portsmouth, OH.  Funeral service will be 11 am Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Reverend Paul Young officiating. Dec 31 2012  Ruby M. Sizemore, 84, of Lizemores, entered into rest, December 23, 2012. Born on July 24, 1928, in Buckhorn, WV, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary Darnell Richards. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husbands, Jake Sizemore and Roy Amey, and her daughter, Janene McGuire. Dec 27 2012 Dorothy A. Taylor, 80, of Glen, entered into rest, Tuesday, December 25, 2012, at the home of her son, John, in Craigsville, WV. Born on January 22, 1932, in Elkridge, she was the daughter of the late John Holcomb and Veda Louise Nottingham Holcomb. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Emery Arnold Taylor. She was a homemaker and Catholic by faith. Dec 25 2012  Grace Ruth Teese died in Charleston, WV, at the age of 87 on Sunday, December 23, 2012, after a long decline.  She was born Grace Ruth Drude on June 25, 1925, in West New York, NJ, the daughter of William F. and Katherine (Wagner) Drude.  In her youth, she was a talented pianist and singer, performing at weddings, her high school graduation, and a recital in Carnegie Hall recital hall.  However, her dreams of a musical career were cut short by marriage and motherhood.  On April 1, 1945, she married Robert Hamilton Teese, who died in 1980.  They lived in Cliffside Park, NJ, until 1960, when they moved to Jefferson Township, NJ.  Grace was a legal secretary for many years.  She and her husband were active in local politics, and Grace served on the township Planning Commission at a time that the local population was mushrooming.  In 1976, she was elected to the Township Council, the first woman (and only the second Democrat) to be elected to that office.  In the late 1980s, after her husband’s death, she moved to Charlotte, NC, and lived there for about 25 years, most recently at Wilora Lake Lodge.  She moved to Charleston, WV, in June 2012 to be closer to her daughter and resided at Charleston Gardens.  She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Susan and Dennis Voelkel of Nebo, her granddaughter Sophie Voelkel of Huntington, and her son and daughter-in-law Robert Teese and Rosemary Kachmarsky of Lopez, PA.   Visitation will be at Wilson-Shamblin-Smith Funeral Home in Clay from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Thursday, December 27, 2012 followed by cremation.  At a later date, her ashes will be buried next to her husband in Grove Church Cemetery, North Bergen, NJ.   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Care, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W., Charleston, WV 25312, hospicecarewv.org. Dec 23 2012  Ernestine F. Koch, 80, of Montgomery, entered into rest December 21, 2012 at CAMC Memorial Division. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, Morris Drive.  Born January 1, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Quincy Adams and Anna Francis Ogar Arthur. Dec 21 2012  Sybil Hester Parsons, 86, entered into rest Thursday, December 20, 2012. Born April 12, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Ida and Perry Truman. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Francis Jarvis, grandson, Jason Bender. Sisters Alta Drake and Ruby King.  Brothers, Custer Truman and Earl Snodgrass. She was a member of the Mudfork Union Church for many years and a faithful member of the Rogers Fork Baptist Church.  Paul and Sybil owned and operated the Clay Exxon garage and service station for many years on Main Street. Sybil was a hard worker in business and the work of the Lord. Anyone who knew her loved her as she did them. Her love of family and flowers was her life.  Sybil is survived by her husband, Rev Paul D. Parsons, her daughters, Faye Bender of Morgantown and Phyllis Dennis of Clay. Step daughters, Wanita Carr, Wilma Parsons and Deanna Hubbard all of Akron, OH. Dec 14 2012  Naomi Ruth Saunders, beloved wife, mother and friend, passed away December 13, 2012. She was born October 22, 1924, at Glen Ferris, WV and lived in Gauley Bridge the majority of her life. She was the daughter of James Estel and Rachel Brillhart. She is survived by her devoted husband, Amos; daughter, Linda Brant; son, Steve Saunders; sister, Dot Crosier; one grandson, Craig Brant and one step- grandson, Jeremy Bird; nephews, Bill Legg, wife Linda, and Robbie Devine and one niece, Judy Chamberlain, husband Chuck. Naomi was predeceased by her eldest son, Jerry Max and sisters, Irene Cavendish, Glenna Legg and Mary Devine. She was a member of the Gauley Bridge Methodist Church for 50 years and taught Children’s Sunday School for 27 years. She was thankful for her many friends but she requested her special friends be mentioned, Gladys Kauff, Nedra Richmond, Pam Brown, Evelyn Moore and Connie Baker. She is greatly missed, but we know, securely and contentedly, she is in the hands of our Lord. An Angel from Earth has moved to Heaven. We Love and Miss You! She was a homemaker and a member of Swiss Missionary Baptist Church. Helen Janese Taylor Childers, 93, of Belva, passed away Thursday, November 29, 2012, after a long illness. Born May 6, 1919, in Wyndal, WV, Fayette Co., she was the daughter of the late Roy and Emma O’Dell Taylor. Helen lived her entire married life in Belva, WV, in the same house she and her late husband, Carl H., built and raised their eight children. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sons, Jim Childers and Dallas Childers; grandsons, Mark Pierson and Jimmy Childers; brothers, Harry (Punch), Carl and Clyde; sisters, Mildred (Mid) Boothe and Betty Cole; son-in-law, Paul H. Brown; great-great-granddaugher, Olivia Cliver and great- great-grandson, Xyler Brown. Helen was a member of the Bible Baptist Church, Belva, and various clubs and organizations in the area. She was one of the founders of the First Church of God of Alta, WV, in the l950’s. She wrote the “Belva Area News” column for the Montgomery Herald for over forty years and also was a correspondent for the Nicholas Chronicle. She was a CNA at various nursing homes in the valley and Summersville Hospital. She was a member of the Home Extension. Helen was very outgoing and never met a stranger. She loved singing hymns in Church. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She will surely be missed by all who knew her. Survivors include daughters, Susie (Doug) Pierson of Falls View, Sonjie Brown of Indore, Sandy Sparks of Falls View, Sharon (Lynn) Young of Georgetown, KY, Becky (Victor) Hayes of Cleveland, TN, Snow Fern (Carlos) Doss of Georgetown, KY and Sharlene (Eddie) Glenn of Lexington, KY. Arley “Jake” French Rogers, 86, of Duck, entered into rest peacefully in his sleep on Monday, November 26, 2012. Born March 25, 1926, in Clay he was the son of the late Emory and Flossie Rogers. He was a retired Railroad worker. Margaret “Maude” Nichols, died November 25, 2012, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston, WV. She lived a full life, loved writing poetry and songs and cooking/feeding everyone. When she lived in Belva, she was known as the neighborhood “grandma”. Maude is survived by her six children; son, Randy Holcomb of Buchannon, WV; daughters, Teresa Hason of Creedmore, NC, Sherri Gibson of South Carolina, Jeanie Wagner of Florida, Tammy Jordan of Charleston, WV and Toni Jackson of Montgomery; 2 granddaughters, 6 grandsons, 2 great-granddaughters and 4 great-grandsons; brothers, Pete Johnson of Lizemores and Arnold Johnson of Texas and sisters, Evelyn Malutich of Morgantown, WV and Cindy Adkins of Dixie.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Clara Holcomb Mobellini.

Mary Lou Rogers Grose, 82, of Minford passed away Monday, November 12, 2012 at SOMC Hospice, Portsmouth, OH. She was born December 25, 1929, in Newton, Roane Co., WV, a daughter of John Spencer Rogers and Zona Sleeth Rogers.   She married Gary Grose on August 11, 1949, in Bomont, Clay Co., WV, and they moved to Minford, Ohio, in 1954.   Mary enjoyed her flower gardens, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and especially loved to travel. Mary is survived by her husband of 63 years Gary Grose; daughters, Marilyn (Ron) Erion of Spearfish, SD, Lou Ann Grose and Carolyn (Robert) Waddell of Minford; 6 grandchildren, Andy Erion, Jason McGoron, Jessie Waddell, Joshua Keaton, Ashli Jolly & Allyson Waddell; 9 great-grandchildren and 2 step-great- grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.   In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son John Gary Grose; brothers Brian and Ben Rogers; and sisters, Bernice and Ala Rogers, Irline Muncil, and Helen Nicholas.  Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 16, 2012, at Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home in Minford with Rev. Nov 16 2012  Roy Cecil "Hodge" Fields, 73, of Wallback, was born into this world November 25, 1939, and departed November 2, 2012. The son of the late Elijah Presley and Lucy Fields, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Freda G. (Hunt) Middaugh. He is survived by his two nieces, Toni Riss of Garland, Texas, and Vicki Tankersley of Portland, Ore.; his nephew, Richard Riss III of Littleton, Colo.; many friends; and numerous cousins. As a man of the land, Hodge worked the majority of his life and continued to groom his family’s farm until his passing. He spoke often of operating a service station with his father, and was employed by Kanawha County Schools for 30 years. Hodge loved his animals dearly, giving each one its own unique name and warm home. Although he mostly kept to himself, he was loved by many. His generous and gentle heart, as well as his tough and stubborn nature, will be remembered and missed. Memorial services are pending until further notice.

She loved to landscape and put a lot of pride in her home. She was an excellent cook and was always available and eager to help her family. She was also an excellent caregiver, who tended to her husband and father in their times of need. Georgia had many friends far and near and she will be greatly loved and missed by all who knew her.

First and foremost, she was a born again Christian and a member of Boggs Fork Community Church, Spencer.  She enjoyed flowers, gardening and spending time with her family who were the love of her life.  She retired from Spencer State Hospital after 20 years of service. Oct 15 2012 Jackie Ray Coleman, 65 of Bomont died Sunday, October 14, 2012 at Thomas Memorial Hubbard Hospice House at 4:10 a.m. He was born April 13, 1947 to the late Lonnie and Margaret (Reed) Coleman. He is also preceded in death by his sister Lucille and brothers Lonnie, Charles, Johnny, and Dempsey (Buck) Coleman. Jack is survived by one sister Geneva of Columbus, Ohio; son Bruce (Linda) of Clendenin, Sarah of Charleston, and Cindy of Bomont. Also, Jack is survived by best friend and ex-wife Connie of Bomont, and 12 grandchildren (Bruce, Jr.,  Charity, Wesley, David, Jessie, Kellie, Thomas, Victoria, Autumn, Christawna, Christopher, and Elijah). Jack was a Vietnam Veteran serving as a staff Sergeant in the US Army 1964-1972. Jack was a member of the VFW Post 8516 of Elkview, WV. Jack’s wishes were to be cremated and his ashes spread over his home place in Bomont. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Burke Memorial Church with the Pastor Richard Talbot. All family and friends are welcome to attend. Oct 11 2012  V. Burke Weaver Taylor was born in Jumping Branch on August 9, 1935 to the late Paul and Thelma Lilly Weaver. Burke, as she is known to family and friends near and far, made her trip to Heaven from Bowers Hospice House on October 10, 2012. Burke was a 1954 graduate of Pineville High School and was very active with the Alumni Association. She greatly enjoyed planning and attending class reunions, especially her class’s 50th in 2004. She continued to share stories of her friends and their adventures throughout her life. Family was the most important aspect of Burke’s life. She was devoted to her children, Myra of Ansbach, Germany and William “Bill” of Buckhannon. She cherished her grandsons, Sabin, who preceded her in death and Grason of Charleston. She took great joy in her two great-grandchildren, Peyton and Alexis. Following the death of her husband, William H. Taylor, Burke spent her years working as a housekeeper and as a nanny. Caring for children was her passion and she loved each and every one she cared for in a special way.  The family would like to thank the staff at Fayette Nursing and Rehab Center for their loving care over the past three and a half years. Also, we would like to thank the ICU Staff at Plateau Medical Center for their efforts and care of not only Burke but the entire family. Finally, thank you to the wonderful staff at the Bowers Hospice House for being so wonderful during Burke’s last days. Arrangements are being handled by Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge. Sept 28 2012  Lt. Harold A. Lee, 85, of Spencer, formerly of Clay, died September 24, 2012, at the Miletree Center, Spencer, after an extended illness. "Big Lee" was born December 8, 1926, in Kanawha County, a son of the late Robert E. and Grace Young Lee. He was a retired West Virginia State Policeman, having served from 1954 to 1981. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Spencer. He enjoyed hunting, collecting antiques and stamps and loved flying and taking flight lessons. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Puckett Lee, who was originally from Logan; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles W. and Nita Lee of Spencer; one sister, Jean Wise of Point Pleasant; and four grandchildren, James Lee and his wife, Amanda, and Kimberly, Tyler and Taylor Lee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Russell Addison Lee; and a sister, Lorraine Pleasants. Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, September 29, at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Doug Sandy and the Rev. Mike King officiating. He was born November 17, 1954 in Roane County, a son of the late Velbert and Virginia “Edith”Nichols Lloyd.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his baby sister, Joice Lloyd, and a brother, Harold “Babe” Lloyd. Virgil was a member of the Alana Baptist Church, Newton, and was a strong believer in God and his wonderful glory. He was employed at Jack Garrett Ford for over 20 years, and was an entrepreneur.   He was the beloved husband of Joyce Dye Lloyd, and loving father to Misty Lloyd, both of Spencer. He is also survived by a sister, Sharon Freeland of Spencer; and a brother, Allen Lloyd of Newton. He also leaves behind a host of extended family and friends, whom he loved and cherished. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Rhodes; a brother, Virgil Beckett; and a sister, Kay Nicholas.  She was a Baptist. Ruth enjoyed reading her Bible and doing arts and crafts. Okey Miller, 89, of Newton, passed away Friday, September 7, 2012, at his home, after an extended illness.  He was a retired employee of Union Carbide Corporation, Alloy, W.Va., retiring in 1976; he was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Newton Baptist Church since 1961.  Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and David O’Neal of Oak Harbor, OH & Sandra and Delmis Tallman of Newton; grandchildren, Stuart and Dana Smith, Sharon and Alan Fuchs, Bill and Colleen Smith, Coy and Paula Tallman, II and their son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Mandana Tallman, Deanna Hammonds and her son, Noah, Alisa Miller and her son, Dakota, Keith and Jennifer Miller; additional great grandchildren; sister, Maysel Rhodes of Doylestown, OH.  Okey was preceded in death by his wife, June Brannon Miller in 2007; son, Jerry Miller;  parents, Cary and Sarah Hall Miller; four brothers and five sisters.   The family would like to thank everyone for their phone calls and prayers. Sept 1 2012 Eric Michael Workman, 26, of Ivydale, entered into rest August 31, 2012, in Charleston, WV, of injuries suffered in an incident in Wallback, WV, on August 28th. Born on March 29, 1986, in Charleston, he was the son of George and Connie Workman of Ivydale. He was a graduate of Clay County High School and West Virginia State University. During his time at West Virginia State, he was a member of the WV State Baseball Team, Player of the Year for 2009, Hitter of the Year, and 2nd Team All American. Eric was a WV State Trooper, a member of the WV State Police Honor Guard, WV Troopers Association, Elk River Musky Club and Big Knob Hunt Club. Eric was an organ donor, and although his life was cut short here on this earth, because of his ultimate sacrifice many will live richer and fuller lives. In addition to his parents, Eric is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Rebecca and Josh King of Wallback; nephew, Aiden King; maternal grandmother, Hallie (Corrine) Woods of Ivydale; aunts, Susie (John) Sears of Ivydale and Tammy (Kenny) Wilmoth of Pension, TN; uncle, Bobby Woods of Ivydale. Aug 31 2012  Dana Cutlip was born in Clay County, WV August 5, 1954 and departed this life August 17, 2012 in a Houston hospital. Dana lived in Texas the past 30 years. He leaves behind in Texas his son, Shawn Cutlip, ex-wife, Marcie Willoughby and fiancée, Kim Gerhart, who will be returning to Akron, Ohio. Dana’s daughter, Dayna Gerhart and granddaughters, Justine Ring and Labella Lowther also of Akron, Ohio love him and will mourn his loss. Dana was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Betty Cutlip, a brother Dale Cutlip, and two infant sisters, Carolyn Sue and Charlotte Cutlip. He leaves behind to grieve and miss him, three brothers and five sisters: Dallas and Donald Cutlip, Akron, Ohio, and BJ (Bill) Cutlip, Ivydale, WV. Agnes Estes and Alice Jones, Charleston, WV, Patricia Becker, Florence, KY, Charlene Smith, Fairfield, OH, and Loretta Peters, Cincinnati, OH. Dana is also survived by an aunt, Lula Cutlip on his father’s side and two uncles, Grover and Owen Lowers, and aunts, Naomi and Kay on his mother side and a host of cousins and nieces and nephews on both sides. Dana was a dreamer and risk taker. He lived to see a lot of his dreams come true by hard work, determination and sometimes a lot of prayer. He owned a metal/canvas awning company doing mostly commercial work. He never forgot WV. At the time of his death, he was trying to close out his business and come back to WV to live peacefully. His final request was to be laid beside of Mom and Dad. Dana loved God and has been acquainted with His great mercy and loving kindness from an early age. He started most mornings reading from his Bible, which he displayed as a centerpiece on his coffee table in his living room. He talked often of the many times and ways God helped him with his life and about his disappointment with himself when he felt he failed God. As he goes to his eternal destiny, may he rest in peace with God.

Corporal Marshall Lee Bailey, age 42, departed this life on August 28th in a fatal incident at Wallback. Marshall was a 1988 graduate of Poca High School. He graduated from West Virginia State University with a Master's degree in Criminal Justice in 1992. He entered the West Virginia State Police Academy in 1995, and graduated in 1996. He was stationed at the Clay County Detachment at Big Otter. Marshall was also a member of the Pleasant Dale Baptist Church in Clay, WV. He was a loving son, wonderful father and brother. He loved to fish and hunt when off-duty, but most of all he was devoted to his law enforcement job, which he chose early in life. He was a mountaineer at heart and was a proud Poca Dot. He also supported the Clay County Panthers. Marshall is survived by his children Lauryn Bailey and Wyatt Lee Bailey and their mother Tammy Bailey of Clay, WV; Whitney Bailey of Nitro; grandson Timothy Welch of Nitro; parents Maxie and Earlene (McClanahan) Bailey of Poca; one brother Justin and wife Ashley Bailey of Charleston and niece Claire Bailey and nephew Connor Bailey of Charleston and a host of other family and friends. Visitation for family and friends will be held at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home in Poca on Saturday, September 1, 2012 from 1:00 to 6:00 PM. Aug 20 2012  Melissa Ann “Missy” Parsons Browning, 46, of Clay, WV, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 18th at CAMC WomenÂ’s and ChildrenÂ’s Hospital, surrounded by her family, after battling a Brave fight with cancer. Missy was born March 17th, 1966 in Howell, Michigan. She was a graduate of Oceana High School and was President of the Class of 1984. She was a 1988 graduate of her beloved Marshall University where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. She was a member of the Marshall Thundering Herd Marching Band and a member of Marshall University’s Alumni. Missy is preceded in death by her husband, Curtis “Bud” Browning; her stepson John Browning her paternal grandparents, Pete and Lydia Parsons; and her maternal grandparents, Cecil and Alva McGlothlin. Aug 13 2012  Richard Tom (‘RT’) Sizemore, Jr.  passed away quietly at his home on August 12, 2012 after years of fighting Parkinson’s disease.  His family was with him.  He was born in Clay, WV on January 2, 1926 to his parents, Richard Tom Sizemore, Sr. and Virgie Lee (Mullens) Sizemore.  He lived in Clay, WV for his entire life; departing for service in the US Navy towards the end of WWII, then attended college at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV.  In Morgantown he met and married his wife of 65 years, Laura Jane (Devlin) Sizemore of Point Marion, PA.  Moving back to Clay, RT opened a grocery store on Main Street of Clay, WV and together Laura and RT raised five children; Richard Tom Sizemore III, MD of Ashburn, VA, Patricia Sue Fromm of Teaneck, NJ, David Patterson Sizemore (deceased), and Dan Devlin Sizemore and Edward Ray Sizemore of Maysel, WV.  RT is survived by his wife, four children, 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.  He was the eldest of five children and is survived by his sister, Dorothy Ann Hanshaw of Cottageville, WV. RT managed a thriving grocery store business for 52 years, retiring to own and care for a busy farm just two miles south of Clay on Triplett Ridge Road.  He planted over 250 apple trees, 1800 grape vines, and 1100 blueberry bushes.  Additionally, RT was active in Clay County politics, serving as the chairman of the Democratic Committee during the Kennedy election and later serving over 18 years as Clay County Commissioner.  He was a member of the Lions Club serving actively for 50 years.  He was a life member of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.  He was very active in the community, working constantly to bring business into Clay and Clay County.  He was a founder and first vice president of the board of directors for the Clay County Golden Delicious Festival that began in 1974 and has continued as an annual event.  There will be a memorial service after cremation at the Wilson-Shamblin-Smith Funeral Home, 154 Main Street, Clay 25043 at 1 PM on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 with Minister Dennis Legg officiating. Born September 30, 1957 in Lodi, OH.    He is the son of Anne Mae DeMoss of Clay and the late Willie “Pete” Runnion Sr. In addition to his father, Willie was also preceded in death by a brother Bobby Darin DeMoss. Aug 7 2012  Kenneth F. Osborne, 86 of Dixie, WV, went home to be with the Lord at Hubbard Hospice House, Monday, August 6, 2012.  He was born September 16, 1925 in Ovapa, Clay County, WV,  to the late Vernon Farris and Lena Gladys Osborne.   In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife Eugenia Moore Osborne; grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Jim Butler, Mr. & Mrs. John Osborne;  sisters,  Betty Taylor, Kathleen Morris, and Vera Holcomb, & Sylvia Williams;  Six Nephews; Two Neices  Four Brother-In-Laws;  Aunts and Uncles. He started work on the sawmill at the age of 16 for Earl Osborne, he later worked for Morg Fitzwater then Hubert White.  He retired from J.P. Hamer after 56 years of service.   He was a member of Ida Missionary Baptist Church for 35 years.  He went to church for 27 years without missing a service.   He is survived by companion, Della Mae Coleman of Belva;  step-daughter, Christina Moore of Mt. Opal Eliza (McMorrow) Ramsey, age 95, passed away at the home of her daughter, Margie Ramsey McMorrow on Saturday, August 4, 2012. She was born October 13, 1916 in Clay County, WV, to the late Mattie (Duffield) and Willis McMorrow. In her youth, she attended Morning Sun School, and Fox School. She studied nursing, achieved LPN certification, and enjoyed a long career as an LPN at Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital in Norwalk, OH. After her retirement, she devoted her life to nursing others and to helping so many people. Opal Ramsey was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Norwalk, OH, and of Christian Advent Church of O’Brian, WV. She was also a long time member of The Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. She loved gardening, and preserving its harvest, she also enjoyed cooking and entertaining. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Wesley Ramsey, brothers Clarence McMorrow and Paul McMorrow, and sisters Rosalea Miller, Pearly Alice Nutter, and Hester Graham. She leaves behind daughter Margie McMorrow, son Willis (Bub) Ramsey, grandchildren Terry Ellis, James Ellis, Teresa Hutchinson, Regina Hamalian, Eliza Robertson, Travis Ramsey, Bret Ramsey, Lynette Gallagher; 18  great- grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters Mary Etta Duffield, Edna Butler, and Joan Nutter. Aug 3 2012  Frances Anna Drake, 77, of Ivydale, entered into rest July 31, 2012, after a long illness. Born January 21, 1935. She was the daughter of the late Florence and Ezra Queen. July 23 2012  Wilson Howard Legg, 76, of Paddy Road, Duck, entered into rest Sunday, July 22, 2012. Born September 18, 1935. He was the son of the late Carlos and Ruth (Pritt) Legg.  In addition to his parents Wilson was also preceded in death by his brother, Okey Legg. Wilson was a Vietnam Veteran from the Air Force and retired from the Department of Highways with 29 years of service as a grader operator.  He is survived by his Fiancé Betty Thomas of Duck, daughter and son in law Rebecca and Sean Back of Huntington and grandchildren Sean, Erik, Dylan, Daniel and Chelsea. Beve Ray Brown, 40, formerly from Clay, passed away suddenly on July 10, 2012. Ray was born September 29, 1971. He is survived by his wife, Betsy Brown; daughters, Maria and Samantha Brown; and son, Beve Brown Jr, all of Miami. He is also survived by his father, Homer Brown; and mother-in-law, Donna MacCowen, both also of Miami. Ray has five  half-sisters; two brothers; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  Ray loved being outdoors and loved to hang out with his friends. July 19 2012  Andy Ralph Rogers, 74, of South Charleston, entered into rest Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at Thomas Memorial Hospital. Born March 4, 1938 in Wallback. He was the son of the late Joe and Lona Rogers. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a son Kenny Rogers of Coca FL and brother, Jimmy. Andy retired from Union Carbide Corp in 2000. He loved golfing with friends and Carbide golf club. His hobbies were fixing things for family. Always enjoyed traveling to new places. Home was always Clay County that he loved so much. July 17 2012  Cleveland E (Gene) McClure, Sr., age 77, went to his home with Our Lord, July 13, 2012.  He was born in Cairo, WV but spent most of his life in Clay County, WV.   For the past 8 years, Lake Wales, FL has been his home. He was blessed to have worked in a field he loved, the oil and gas business. He retired from Cabot Oil and Gas Corp. after many years.  He was preceded in death by parents, Percy and Edith McClure and his beloved wife of 46 years, Sybil Young McClure.  He is survived by his wife Carol (Hill-Jackson) McClure. They began 1st grade together and 50 years later, at a high school class reunion, they met again.  God brought them together for 10 awesome years, and then He took Gene home to be with Him. His children, Andrea (Ann) Anderson and Cleveland E. (Dusty) McClure, Jr. and grandchildren, Matt, Sarah, Sean, and Erin and great grandchildren Dalton and Brooklyn. July 10 2012 Danny Trent, 60 of Brownsville, died Saturday, July 7, 2012 at home. He was born July 9, 1951 in Gauley Bridge, to the late Beuford and Nona Mink Trent. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Herman and David Trent. . He was a coal miner for Maple Coal Company and a Marine Corp Veteran. July 9 2012   William A. “Bill” Markle, 78, of Dixie, WV, passed away Friday, July 6, 2012, surrounded by family, after a long illness.  Bill was born August 30, 1933, in Maysel, WV, to Norvel D. Markle and Maysel Mullins Markle. He was a 1952 graduate of Clay County High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, while stationed in Germany. Bill was retired from Exxon Mobil after 33 years of service as a truck driver. He was an avid West Virginia Mountaineer and Dallas Cowboy fan. Bill also enjoyed camping, boating and traveling.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert “Wink” and Boyd, and his sister, Dortha Roop. Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years, Loreine; daughter, Judith (Larry) Coffman of Weston; granddaughter, Lora (Brad) Snodgrass of Parkersburg; his pride and joy, great-granddaughter, Delaney Elizabeth Snodgrass; sisters, Charlotte (George) Johnson of Gauley Bridge and Barbara Truman of Surgoinsville, TN; and his brother, Broadus (Ella Mae) Markle of Maysel.  A graveside service will be held at 1 pm Monday, July 9, at Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow, WV with Minister Roger Tinnel officiating. June 21 2012   Emmett David Moore, 54, of Campbell’s Creek went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 20, 2012.Born January 4, 1958, and grew up in Bentree. He was the son of the late Talmage “Ted” Moore and mother, Louise Moore of Bentree. In addition to his father, Emmett was preceded in death by his wife, Susie and brother, Roger. June 21 2012 Thomas Euegene Geiger II, 24, of Procious, WV, was received in the Kingdom of Heaven on June 16, 2012. Born June 13, 1988 in Grand Forks AFB, ND but raised in WV by his mother and stepfather Crystal and Charles Hayes of Procious and his father Thomas E. Geiger Sr., of Maysel. In his short life he touched many people’s lives with his laughter, his jokes and his big smile. He loved and was so proud of his brothers; he loved to draw, go fishing and to reach out to others. He had a huge loving heart and never knew a stranger. Thommy had overcome many obstacles in his life but he never complained and never gave up trying. Thommy was preceded in death by his maternal “Grandma Nana” Wanda King Hanna. In addition to his parents he is also survived by his brothers Jeremy Geiger and Caleb Hayes of Procious, step brother, Chad Hayes of Summersville, and step sister, Sasha Hayes of Cowen. June 21 2012 Danny Ray Kincaid, Sr., 60, a lifelong resident of Gauley Bridge, died June 15, 2012, at home.  Born on November 24, 1951, in Montgomery, he was the son of the late Charlie Kincaid and Florence Taylor Kincaid. He was an Army veteran, having served with the 82nd Air Borne Division and was retired from Elkem Metals. Survivors include his wife, Mary of Gauley Bridge; children, Danny Jr. and wife, Lisa, and their son, Nathan and daughter, Mallory, of Charlton Heights, Robby and wife, Hope, and their daughters, Hannah and Maddy and son, Colton, of Gauley Bridge, Terri M. Evans and husband, Bryan, and their daughter, Abby, and son, Bryar, of Victor and Jesse and wife, Melanie, and their son, Riddick, of Fayetteville; sisters, Naomi Williams of Kileen , TX, Brenda Prather of Gauley Bridge and Anna Linton of Gauley Bridge.  Danny enjoyed spending time with the grandkids, hunting, fishing, and restoring and showing his antique cars. June 12 2012  Carlis Gene Smith, age 67, of Sacramento, California passed away peacefully on Friday, June 8, 2012 at home. He was born at Obrion, West Virginia on July 3, 1944 and reared in Clay, West Virginia. He moved to Sacramento in 1959 and was a Journeyman Carpenter out of Local 586 of Sacramento. He was past Vice President, Executive Board Member, Governor's Board Member, Trial Committee Member, and District Council Member of 586. He served in the United States Army for five years. Carlis was a member of American Legion Post 447 of Sacramento and Chapter 40/8 for more than 20 years. He was also retired from Target. He is survived by one daughter, Je'ne Summer Smith, of Elk Grove. In addition to his daughter, he is survived by a sister, Marjorie Thomas, of Lakeview, Arkansas; two brothers: James Smith (Chris) of Sedalia, Missouri, and Robert Smith (Charlotte) of Hawthorne, Nevada. He is also survived by his dear friend and caregiver, Evelyne McLaughlin of Procious, West Virginia who called him her “Prince Charming.” He was preceded in death by his parents, James Hugh Smith and Lona Boggs Smith. Carlis had a great love for his daughter, carpentry work, and for the state of West Virginia. He wanted to be laid to rest there in his family's cemetery. Graveside services and burial will be held in the Boggs Family Cemetery in Big Otter, West Virginia on Friday, June 15th at 11am. Rev. Roland Boggs will officiate. June 8 2012 Dana Martin Hanshaw, 62, of Big Otter, very peacefully passed from this life on Thursday, June 7, 2012. Born December 19, 1949 in Vally Fork. Bob was a true friend to all who knew him and was loved deeply by his family. He will be greatly missed by all. May 29 2012    Lee Sargent, 101, of Dixie, was returned to God by heavenly angels as his family sang and son-in-law played the violin, celebrating his life, on May 28, 2012, at Montgomery General Hospital. Born on October 11, 1910, in Weston, he was the son of the late Walter Landon Sargent and Amanda Laverne Lee Sargent. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife; Mabel Ramsey Sargent; grandson, Brian Eastman, and special brother-in-law, Carl Ramsey. Lee was retired from Union Carbide, Alloy, attended several Holiness churches, receiving the Holy Ghost when he was 25. He was a spiritual man, having a close walk with God. He recited poetry and played violin and harmonica. Patience was his quality and most of all he loved to serve the Lord. He was a member of the American Legion and was a World War II veteran, having served as a member of the US Army Air Corp from 1942 to 1945. May 22 2012   Charles Page Kuntz, 88, of Swiss, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 20, 2012. Born on December 10, 1923, in Swiss, he was the son of the late Henry and Maude Kuntz. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Fred; sister, Mary Davis and grandson, Ricky Dorsey. He was a World War II Army veteran, a lifetime farmer, and was known as “The Egg Man” after having sold eggs for more than 50 years. He loved sports of all kinds. Page was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. May 2 2012  Robert Arnold Tanner, 82, of Nebo passed on to glory Sunday, April 29, 2012 while riding his 4-wheeler near Big Otter. He was born February 3, 1930, at South Charleston, WV. He was the son of the late French and Amy Tucker Tanner. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Starcher Tanner, his daughter Judy Thayer; brothers, Buster and Arnett. Known as “Bob” to his friends and family in Ohio, and as Arnold to his West Virginia childhood friends and family, he was reared in South Charleston, Nebo in Clay County and Zona in Roane County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and he and Mary lived 50 years and raised their children in Akron OH. He was retired from Springfield Local School District and later worked at Hertz. He was a beloved member of Unity Gospel Tabernacle and loved living back in his home state of WV. He is survived by his wife of seven years, Marlene Cooper Potasnik, son, Jeffrey; stepdaughter Becky (Jim) Proctor; grandson, Corey Shafer; granddaughters, Amber Potasnik; Kuphal and Quincy Potasnik Reiter; great-granddaughter Sparrow; brother Norval Tanner; daughter-in-law Sandy Potasnik; son-in-law Steve Thayer. In accordance with ArnoldÂ’s final wishes, his body was donated to the WV Human Gift Registry. April 30 2012  Kenton Leon “Kenny” Mosley, II, 54, of Newton, died at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at the home of his brother, after an extended illness.   He was born February 26, 1958, in Huntington, a son of the late Kenton Leon and Dove Keen Mosley.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.  Kenny was a retired auto body technician.  He enjoyed playing his guitar and country music.  Survivors include a son, Kenton Mosley; daughters, Randee, Stephanie, Amber and Savannah Mosley; brothers, Willie, John and Joseph Mosley; sisters, Joyce Mechling, Carol Adkins and Nancy Hager; four grandchildren.  A graveside service was held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the Community Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Wayne, with Pastor Jerry Hanshaw officiating.  There was no visitation.  John H. Gregory Gibson, 51, born Feb 6, 1961, passed away April 9, 2012. He was a long haul trucker and an avid fisherman. He was the son of Genevieve and Charles Gibson. Phyllis Lucille (Sutton) Woodrum, 85, passed away Tuesday, Feb 7, 2012 at home peacefully with family by her side. Phyllis was an avid gardner, she loced the outdoors, nature, and collectin dolls. She will be deeply missed by all those that loved her. Rebecca Junie Myers, 87, of Harrison, entered into rest Wednesday, April 18, 2012. Born in Widen, on December 22, 1924 to the late Thomas and Nancy ( Dobson) Ratliff. In addition to her parents Junie was also preceded in death by her husband Lee W. Myers, one granddaughter Rebecca; brother, Ishmel, Charlie, Luther, Norman and Ervin; and sister Orpha. She won the West Virginia State Spelling Bee in 1939 and graduated from Widen High School in 1943. She entered into matrimony with Lee on July 21, 1945. March 8 2012 Harry Lewis Larch, 85, of Wallback entered into rest March 6, 2012. Born April 6, 1926 in Wallback. He was the son of the late Tryphosa and Julie Larch. He was a member of White Pilgrim United Methodist Church.  He was also retired from the United States Army with over 20 years of service, having served in the Vietnam War. He was an electrician for AEP for 39 years, a member of Boomer Baptist Church and an Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam Era. After his family, his special love was hunting and fishing. Born on November 23, 1930, inWendell, she was the daughter of the late Dennis and Lillie Elliott Foster. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Libby Long; sisters, Rose Holcomb, Glenva Blanchfield, Virginia Foster and Clara Foster; and brothers, J. D. Foster, Robert Foster and Denny Foster. She was a graduate of Gauley Bridge High School and WVU Tech School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse, working in area hospitals and nursing homes and was a member of Bell Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church. Donald Lee Morris of Gauley Bridge, West Virginia, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on February 3, 2012, after a very courageous nine year battle with cancer. He was a devoted son and a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Born on February 18, 1931, in Glen Ferris, WV, he was the son of the late Edgar C. Morris and Evelyn Fugate Morris and later moved to Scrabble Creek with his parents in 1938. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his step-mother, Ezelle Ramsey Morris, brother, William Hansford Morris, infant granddaughter Morris and his great-grandson, Alexander Thomas Mitchell. Donald strongly believed in the value of hard work and had his first job at the Gauley Bridge Texaco station while he was still a student at Gauley Bridge High School. After his high school graduation in 1949, he went to work for the Union Carbide Alloy Plant. In 1951 he married Mary Helen Cogar and then in 1954, he purchased land on Scrabble Creek where he built a home for his growing family. In 1963, he joined the Food Machinery Corporation as a certified welder. In 1964, he went on to study industrial arts and teaching at West Virginia Institute of Technology. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1968 and taught briefly for Columbus Public Schools and then returned to Gauley Bridge where he served his community as an industrial arts teacher at Gauley Bridge High School until his retirement in 1989. After retirement, he continued to enjoy woodworking, gardening, blue grass music, and spending time in the garage fixing anything and everything. In August of 1949 he became an active member of the Gauley Bridge Baptist Church. For many years, he taught the Men’s Fellowship Sunday School Class and served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was also a member of the Pulpit Committee and helped his wife coordinate Vacation Bible School for twenty years. Donald is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Mary Helen Morris; children, Edgar (Rebecca) Morris of Gauley Bridge, Robert (Dee Ann) Morris of Simpsonville, SC, James (Tamera) Morris of Conway, SC and Mary (Robert) Scott of Gauley Bridge; grandchildren, Ashley (John) Sagona, Jennifer (Nathan) Mitchell, Edgar (Terri) Morris, Elizabeth (Nathan) Ball, Bradley Morris, Matthew (Cody) Morris and Logan Scott; great-grandchildren, Jacob Sagona, Maylee Morris and Nicholas Cooper Ball; in-laws, Norma Morris of Ashland, KY, JoAnn Vance of Sanford, NC, Marie (Don)Walker of Ravenswood and Gerald Cogar of Ravenswood; many nieces and nephews. Jan 29 2012  Dominick Costa of Falls View passed from his earthly home on January 6, 2012. He was born in Calatria Prov. Reggio Calabria, Italy on October 17, 1919, the youngest of four sons of Luigi and Rosa Manno Costa. Dominick joined his father at a small mining community in Greenbrier County at age 17. He was self-educated in the English language as well as life-long work in mining. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the military police branch of the U.S. Army. He served honorably as an interpreter as well. After his military service ended, he returned to the mining industry and later owned and operated coal mines in Boone, Fayette, Greenbrier and Kanawha counties. Dominick was given the gift of many years and had a passion for life, enjoying his family, work and friends. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers Cosimo, Jimmy and Joe; and a daughter, Sondra. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Wanda Lee Snodgrass; his son, Frank Lee Costa and wife, Jennifer of Morgantown; grandchildren, Francesca Lynn Costa of Surfside Beach, SC, Nikki Lee Costa of Morgantown and Chase Costa and wife, Amnee of Gauley Bridge, and their son, Dominick, named in honor of his great-grandfather. Additional survivors include grandsons, Bryan Walkup of Lake Norman, NC, Steven Walkup of Greenbrier County; granddaughters, Sherri Costa of Conway, SC and Susan Wriston of Deltona, FL along with six great-grandchildren. Dominick also cherished the love of his brother Joe’s children, Rita, Kay and Bob as well his brother Cosimo’s children residing in New Jersey. Dominick was a 40-plus year member of the Falls View Presbyterian Church, a 75-year member of the United Mine Workers of America, a member of the Masonic Bodies Gauley Bridge Lodge No. 64, Scottish Rite, York Rite and Beni Kedem Shrine. He spent many years enjoying golf at Hawks Nest Golf Club. He and his wife were also members of Kanawha Chapter No. 38, Order of Eastern Star. There will be a visitation at Pennington Funeral Home in Gauley Bridge from 6 to 8 pm on Saturday, January 7, 2012. The celebration of Dominick’s life will begin at 2:00 pm Sunday, January 8, 2012 at the Falls View Presbyterian Church. Jan 17 2012  Leara Wood, 99, born 6/04/1912, died 1/14/2012, beloved wife of Gene(deceased), loving mother of Jeanette Fleischman(Rob), grandmother of Chris(Kirsten) and Robyn Fleischman, great grandmother of Tyler, Gabe, Ali and Noah. She was preceded in death by her brothers Earl, Otis and George Winebrenner and her sisters, Virginia Stevens and Ethel Milam. Leara was a life–long resident of Gauley Bridge and was recognized as Gauley’s oldest resident several years ago. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Hallmark Ornament Club of North Ridgeville, Ohio. Jan 14 2012   Lawrence Lowell Parsons 77, of Hartland, WV entered through the gates of Heaven to meet his beloved wife Anna and son Eric on January 13, 2012.  He is survived by daughters, Anna Corbett (Trooper) of St. Petersburg, Fla., Benita Reed (Rick) of Tunkhannock, PA., and Vicky Davis (Henry) of Clay, WV. Also surviving Lawrence are his remaining siblings, Clifford, Clayton, and Roy Parsons.  He leaves behind four grandchildren Joshua and Caleb Jarvis, Kristian Thomas, and Amanda Raike; and two great- granddaughters Audrey and Paisley Thomas.  Honoring Lawrence's wishes, there will be no services. As a Human Gift Donor he leaves behind the greatest gift to all.  The family would like to thank the Beckley VA Medical Center staff and a very special thank you to his doctor, Dr. William C. Boyd, DO, CMD for being the most caring and supportive doctor the family ever could have asked for.

Jan 12 2012  Mary Ellen Campbell, 74, of Shelbyville, IN, entered into rest January 6, 2012, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Rushville, IN. Born on March 12, 1937, in Quinwood, WV, she was the daughter of the late Howard Legg and Freda Mae Brown Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, David A. Campbell, son, Matthew Campbell; brothers, Landon H. “Sam” Brown and Danny Johnson; and sister, Sue Keenan. Mrs. Campbell retired from Knauf Insulation after 22 years of service. She was a member of Vaughan Baptist Church,  Vaughan, WV, attended Little Blue River Baptist Church and was a 1955 graduate of Nicholas County High School in Summersville. She collected Cabbage Patch Dolls and cardinals and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her sons, David A. Campbell of Shelbyville, IN and Columbus (Patty) Campbell of Shelbyville; daughters, Melissa Frogge of Shelbyville, Stella Benefiel of Westport, IN and Freda (Tony) Swinehart of Rushville, IN; brothers, James Johnson of Ripatoe, WV, Donald Johnson of Montgomery and Tony Johnson of Buffalo Gap, TX; sisters, Becky Taylor of Vaughan, Betty Jo Stuart of Vaughan, Kathy Stuart of Vaughan and Joyce Ann Wilson of Ridgeway, SC; eighteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.  Funeral service will 1 pm Friday, January 13, 2012, at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, WV, with Minister Paul E. He was the son, of Darrell Keith and step-mother Janey Jones of Bickmore. Mother, Gwin Payne of Wichita Kansas. Keith was also preceded in death by his wife Misty. He was correctional officer for the state of West Virginia. In addition to his parents, Keith is survived by his daughters, Alayna Paige and Kaylee Autumn Jones of Beechy Ridge, Bickmore, brothers, Harry Jones of Fresno, Calif, Danny Downtain and sister, Kimberly Bell both Wichita Kansas. Jan 6 2012  Matthew Allen Mullins, 35, of Elkview went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 4, 2012. He was a third class operator at West Virginia-American Water. Survivors include his son, Matthew Aiden Mullins, and daughter, Courtney Faith Mullins, both at home; parents, Ernest Gene and Sharry Roush Mullins of Clendenin; brothers, Ernest "Big Boy" Mullins II and Travis "Skip" Mullins, both of Clendenin; sisters, Debbie Jeffrey, Lanette Rouse and Katie Lupardus, all of Clendenin, and Julie Chin of South Korea; and several nieces and nephews. Jan 6 2012  Jerry Randall Powers, 60, of 5901 Charlies Dead End Road, Efland, died Tuesday, January 3, 2012. He was born on March 23, 1951 in Kanawha County, WV, son of Patty Holstein Powers of West Virginia and the late Clarence Clyde Powers. Before moving to North Carolina, Jerry was very proud to be a coal miner. At the time of his he death he was a diesel mechanic with Petro in Mebune and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Everybody who knew Jerry had a story to tell about his sense of humor or his generosity. He never met a stranger and would give the shirt off his back while wanting nothing in return. Nothing made Jerry any happier than spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his mother he is survived by his wife; Danieth Nichols Powers of the home; daughters; Mary Lane of Hillsborough, NC, Kim Bennett of Efland, NC, Jerri Fayne Neighbours of Efland, NC, and Ethel Tunnell of Hubert, NC; sisters; Ellen Eisenmann of OH and Mary Chapman of VA: brothers; James Powers of WV., Daniel Powers of OH, Bobby Powers of OH., Alfred Powers of WV., and Timmy Powers of WV., 11 grandchildren and one great grandson also survives.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Saturday, January 7, 2012 with services by the Rev.
