Dec 29 2005  Dana Delbert Sears, 38, of Chloe, died Wednesday, December 28, 2005, at CAMC-General Division. Born on August 27, 1967, in Braxton County, he was the son of the late Dallas Lee Sears and Evelyn Hall Sears of Chloe. He was a laborer for S & T Pipeline, a member of the Steel Workers Union and Laborers International Union. In addition to his mother, he is also survived by his brothers, Denzil, Ronnie, Zyndall, and Donnie, all of Chloe and Dennis of Nicut; sisters, Rosalee King, Norma Seabolt, and Sharon Sears, all of Chloe. Graveside service will be 2 pm Sunday, January 1, 2006, at the Sears Cemetery, Nebo, with Minister Dewey Tanner officiating. There will be no visitation. Dec 28 2005  Thelma Lorraine Thomas, 36, of Maysel, died Monday, December 26, 2005, at her home. Born on June 2, 1969, in Charleston, WV, she was the daughter of the late Lowell Thomas and Brenda Thomas of Maysel. She was a home care giver for Clay Development Corp. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her sons, Brian Matthew Blackburn of Columbus, OH, Timothy Lowell Thomas and Cody Alan Thomas, both of Maysel; sisters, Ruby Marie Thomas of Greenup, KY, and Barbara Kay Shamblin of Procious; grandson, Collin Blackburn of Columbus. Thelma was loved by many. Graveside service will be 11 am Friday, December 30, 2005, at Clay Memorial Gardens, Clay, with Minister John Day officiating. There will be no visitation. Dec 28 2005  Elizabeth Jones Manning, 86, of Hot Springs, AR, formerly of Clay County, WV, entered into rest Tuesday, December 27, 2005, at Advanced Care Hospital in Hot Springs. Born on May 26, 1919, in Bomont, WV, she was the daughter of the late James A. and Lillie Mullins Jones. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Clay Manning, her brothers, Perry, Earl, Tillman and Mac, and her sister, Retha. She was a retired food service worker. Survivors include her sons, Jimmy of Waco, TX, and Robert Clay II of Elkton, MD; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Fred Waites of Hot Springs Village, AR, and Sharon and Charles Evers of Midland, TX; 9 grandchildren, 8 great- grandchildren. Funeral service will be 11 am Saturday, December 31, 2005, at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay. Burial will follow in the Walnut Grove Cemetery, Strange Creek, WV. Dec 28 2005  Harriett Murphy, 78, of Maysel, entered into rest Tuesday, December 27, 2005, at Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center,  Ivydale. Born on February 7, 1927, at Hansford Fork, she was the daughter of the late William B. and Louise Moore Griffith. She was a substitute school teacher, and former co-owner of the Fashion Shop in Clay. Her husband, Delbert Murphy, survives her. Graveside service will be 2 pm Friday, December 30, 2005, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Wallback, with Minister Ralph Davis officiating. Dec 27 2005 Mavis Runion, 94,  During her 42-year career as a school teacher, Mrs. Mavis S. Runion always put a major emphasis on reading. "She said that if they didn't learn how to read then they couldn't comprehend and learn other subjects," her daughter, Marcella Ruel of Lakeland, said. The retired first grade teacher at Combee Elementary School died of complications following a stroke Thursday (Dec. 15, 2005) in Lakeland. She was 94. Born in Dille, W.Va., on Sept. 25, 1911, she was raised on a farm in West Virginia.  She graduated from high school at the age of 16 and obtained her teaching degree from Glenville State Teachers College in West Virginia. Mrs. Runion began her career in 1933, teaching in a two-room school house in West Virginia. Mrs. Runion loved children and had eight of her own and one on the way when her husband of 15 years passed away in 1947.  She came to Lakeland from Clay, W.Va., in 1956.  Her career with the Polk County School Board teaching first grade started at John Cox Elementary School. She later taught at Lime Street Elementary and Combee Elementary School. She was an artist and enjoyed painting and making quilts.  She was a member of Bonny Baptist Church. Mrs. Runion was preceded in death by her first husband, Carl Streets, and second husband, James Runion, in the mid 1960s. In addition to her daughter, Marcella Ruel, she is survived by her sons, Duane Streets, Haines City, Kenneth Streets,  Thomasville, Ga., Dane Streets, Lakeland; stepson, Robert Johnson, Lakeland; daughters, Patsy Carroll, Sandra Dean, Shirley Murray and Carol Adams, all of Lakeland; 24 grandchildren; 49 great-granchildren.

Dec 21 2005  John Lester Dozer, Sr., 68, of Bickmore, entered into life ever after peaceably at home Monday, December 19, 2005. He was born June 25, 1937, in Zanesville, OH, to the late Ernest and Edna Dozer.  He was a retired Whirlpool Technician from Sears, and retired Military.  He resided in Fola, WV. He was a loving husband and father, a dedicated member and Trustee of Fola Missionary Baptist Church, and always a friend to everyone he met.  He is survived by his wife, Gloria J. (Workman) Dozer of Fola; daughter, Jeanna Marie of Fola; sons, John L. Jr. and Rachell Dozer of Weston and James E. Dozer of Fola; 7 grandchildren, Joseph and Willa Dozer of NC, Corey Dobbins of Left Hand, James Jr., Alexander, and Kayla Dozer of Fola, Jacee and Elijah Dozer of Weston.  Funeral service will be 11 am Friday, December 23, 2005, at Fola Missionary Baptist Church, Fola Road, with Ministers Teddy Legg and

Dec 19 2005  Ceril McClistle Fitzwater , 82, of Clendenin, formerly of Clay, went home to be with the Lord after a long battle with Alzheimer?s Disease. He died Sunday, December 18, 2005 at Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by his loving family. Born August 25, 1923, in Clay County WV, he was the son of the late Morgan Shafter and Mary Ursula Price Fitzwater. He brothers, Creedis and Edsel, and his sister Ermel Taylor, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Willadene Hope Fitzwater of Clendenin, his children and their spouses, Preston and Teresa Fitzwater of Clendenin, Valerie and Keith Brown of Fola, Chris and Elba Fitzwater of New Hampshire and Danita and Dwayne Mullins of Fola. He is survived by nine grandchildren that he adored: Amanda and her husband Mark, Grayam and Amelia Fitzwater, Jeremy and Jessie Mullins, Caleb and Sam Brown, and Fernando, Jonathan and Vanita Fitzwater; three great-grandchildren, Jacob and Nicholas Grayam and Jayden Randolph. He is also survived by his brother Carmel Fitzwater of Fola, and his sister Vernal Taylor of Bickmore. Ceril was a life-long member of the Fola Missionary Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher and Choir Director. He helped develop the annual Christmas nativity that has been presented at the church on Christmas Eve for 44 years. In the 1960?s he directed the Fola Missionary Baptist Church Girls Chorus who traveled throughout the state. He was also a former Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 130, which the church sponsored. He was retired from the Clay County Schools where he taught at several schools throughout the county over his long career and where he was the first Principal of Clay County Junior High School, serving for 9 years. Ceril finished his career as an educator doing what he loved most, teaching English at Clay County High School. Ceril epitomized the Greatest Generation. He served in the Pacific Theater as a deep-sea demolition diver and signalman with the U.S. Navy in World War II. During the war Ceril participated in campaigns such as Iwo Jima and Saipan, and survived his ship being sunk by a typhoon, another by an enemy torpedo, and a transport plane ditching at sea. He was also a Pacific Golden Gloves boxer.
After his discharge, he attended the Stamps-Baxter School of Music in Dallas Texas, and for a short while toured throughout the south east with the Four States gospel quartet. On his return home to Fola, WV, he taught singing schools and worked in his family?s logging business until he began his teaching career while attending college on the GI bill. He attended Glenville State College, received his BA degree from Morris Harvey College, and his MA degree from WVCOGS in Charleston. The Rev. Tom Price and the Rev. Rodney Smith will conduct the funeral services Wednesday, December 21, at 11:00 a.m. at the Fola Missionary Baptist Church, Fola, WV. Burial will follow in the Fitzwater Family Cemetery, Fola.  A gathering of family and friends will be Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay. The family would like to thank the kind, dedicated and professional staff of Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at Big Otter for the loving care they provided. Dec 19 2005  Karl O. Morton, Sr.  Chesapeake, Virginia - Karl Okey "Skip" Morton Sr., 70, died Friday, December 9, 2005. Mr. Morton was born in Widen, WV to the late Okey and Columbia Givens Morton. He was a veteran having served in the United States Navy for 31 years and obtaining the rank of Petty Officer, First Class. During his naval career, he served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam and had worked as a deep sea diver for 16 years. Upon retiring, Mr. Morton worked as a maintenance engineer for a large property management group and as a volunteer E.M.T. for the Chesapeake Beach Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, where he was later retired as an honorary captain.  Left to cherish his memory  are his wife of 48 years, Carol Morton; daughter Carolyn S. Morton-Booker and husband Robert of Virginia Beach, Va; sons Karl Okey Morton, II of  Virginia Beach, Va; Ronald B. Morton and wife Regina of Chesapeake, Va; and John Morton and wife Mary of Chesapeake, Va; sisters Jincy Rouse and Peggy Miller both of Charleston, WV; and thirteen grandchildren.  The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Chesapeake Beach Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, P.O. Dec 19 2005   D. Nadine McKown, 66, of Spencer, died at her residence Thursday following an extended illness.  McKown retired in 1995 after 30 years of service in education. At the time of her retirement, she was Director of Personnel and Director of Curriculum & Instruction for the Roane County Board of Education.  Among her accomplishments were starting kindergarten classes in Linden, Newton, Left Hand and Walton schools. She was the first principal of the Geary School, Left Hand. She formerly taught classes at Glenville State College and was an adjunct professor at COGS. She was a member of the W.Va. Association of Retired Teachers.  She earned a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Morris Harvey College; a Masters Degrees in both Early Childhood Education and Education Administration from COGS.  She was also a member of the Roane County Republican Executive Committee and the Roane County Republican Women’s Club; a member of the Newton Baptist Church and the Eastern Star. She was a past member of the Delta Kappa Gamma.  McKown was active in 4-H, serving as club leader and various other capacities.  She was born February 28, 1939, in Clay County, a daughter of the late Tommy A. and Ruby A. Samples. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, C.I. “Buddy” McKown, Sr., and one brother, Neal Samples.   Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, C.I. “Sam” and Feli McKown of Newton; three grandchildren, Isaac, Quincy and Victoria McKown; brother, Garrett Samples of Clendenin; two sisters, Emogene Morris of Jacksonville, FL and Karen Dawson of Ovapa; a godchild, Jill Jett of Little Hocking, OH.  A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, December 18 at 2 p.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Ronald W. Fisher officiating. Dec 18 2005 Alton Oscar Legg, 70, of Lizemores, entered into rest December 15, 2005, at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 23, 1935, in Indore to the late Robert Jackson and Donnie Legg. He was a retired custodian from the Clay County Board of Education, and also worked 16 years with Ford Motor Company. He was an Army Veteran, and a member of Laurel Fork Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Judy Nichols Legg of Lizemores; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Seth Fener of Jacksonville, NC; step-son, Timmy Stone of Lizemores; step-daughter, Tammy Craze of Kimberly; brother, Kline Arris Legg of Great Bend, KA; sister, Jo Ann Reed of Canton, OH; 4 step-grandchildren, l step-great- granddaughter. Dec 14 2005   Maredith Margaret Hall, 75, of Clay, passed away December 9, 2005, after a brief illness. Born on April 23, 1930, in Nicholas County, she was the daughter of the late Giles and Lillie Adkins Wood. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Murl E. Hall. Survivors include her children; Larry E. Hall of Harrison, Carol Weekly of Elyria, OH, Connie Gill of LaGrange, OH, Debra McKinney of Clay, Randy Hall of Bidwell, OH, and Ronnie Hall of Walton; brother, Arden Wood of Amarillo, TX; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren. Dec 9 2005  Dennis Berlin James, 63, of Big Otter, died unexpectedly on December 7, 2005, at his workshop at home. Born on May 26, 1942, at Dink, WV, he was the son of the late Fred and Dessie Ashley James. He retired from General Motors in 1993. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood working, and restoring antiques. He was a founding member of the Big Otter Volunteer Fire Department, an active member of the Nebo Baptist Church, and a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Phyllis Matheney James; sons, Allen and family of Fitzgerald, GA and David and wife, Brandie, of Horner, WV; daughters, Dorene Crawford and family of Akron, OH and Denise and John of Dearing, GA; brother, Gary of Mogadore, OH, and his mother-in-law, Marie Matheney of Ivydale; 6 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Dec 8 2005  Annie Myrtle Marling, 92, of Bickmore, entered into rest on December 6, 2005, at Montgomery General Hospital. Born on March 20, 1913, in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late James and Samantha Keith Nottingham. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Phillip Marling and two sons, George W. Marling and Henry L. (Doc) Marling. She was a homemaker, and a Baptist. Survivors include sons, James P. Marling of Bickmore and Luther K. (Peewee) Nottingham of Duck; daughters, Maggie V. (Toots) Neff of Bickmore, Ollie S. Neff of Bickmore, Abbie K. Dec 8 2005   Carol Joy Facemire, age 70, of Sutton, W.Va. departed this life on Dec. 6, 2005, after a long struggle with diabetes and heart disease. She was born April 24, 1935, in Sutton, Braxton County, W.Va.   She was a lifelong resident of Braxton County and a graduate from Sutton High School. She worked as a cashier at IGA, in Sutton, and the Sutton Foodland for many years until her retirement from the latter. A homemaker and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she was extremely proud of her family especially her children and grandchildren. During her lifetime, she touched the lives and the hearts of many individuals in Braxton County and central West Virginia and cherished her friends and family.   Preceding her in death were one son, James R. Facemire; her parents, Rev. Leslie Skidmore and Irene (Sutton) Skidmore; and two sisters, Sue Jewett and Colleen Payne.   She is survived by her husband, Russell A. Facemire; three sons, Richard A. Facemire and wife Patricia (Pat) Facemire, of Gassaway, W.Va., David N. Facemire and wife, Christina (Tena), of Sutton, W.Va., and John D. Facemire of Sutton, W.Va.; seven grandchildren, Nacoal Ransbottom and husband, Joey, of Sutton, W.Va., Amanda Payne and husband, B.J., of Sutton, W.Va., Isaac Facemire of Sutton, W.Va., Kylan Facemire of Charleston, W.Va., Andrew Facemire, Patrick Facemire, and Christian Facemire of Gassaway; two great-grandchildren, Sydney Ransbottom of Sutton, W.Va. and Brylee Facemire of Charleston, W.Va. She is also survived by one sister, Donna S. Miller and husband, Rex, of Solomons, Md.; two brothers, Albert (John) Skidmore and wife, Rhonda, of Sutton, W.Va. and James L. Skidmore and wife, Karen, of Charleston, W.Va.; and one aunt, who was more like a sister, Alberta (Sutton) Skidmore and husband, Harold Skidmore, of Heaters, W.Va.   Service will be on Friday, Dec. 9, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton, W.Va. with Rev. Dec 4 2005  Janie Stephenson Coulter, 90, of Charleston died November 30, 2005, in St. Francis Hospital, Charleston, WV, following a brief illness.b She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Emil Coulter; sons, Steve and Arthur; and daughter, Linda Coulter Grimes. Janie was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She was a devout Christian and member of the Elk River Nazarene Church. She was a staunch Democrat. She was an avid genealogist and a contributing writer to the History of Clay County. She was a past Member of the John Young Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, West Virginia Genealogy Society, Clay County Landmarks Commission and Historical Society, Eastern Star and Rebecca?s Lodge.   Janie was born at Clay, WV, on November 22, 1915, the eldest of 11 children. Her father was Martin Van Buren Stephenson, son of Sherman Stephenson and Janie?s beloved grandmother, Sarah Legg Stephenson. Her mother was Florence Sizemore Stephenson, daughter of Janie?s beloved grandfather, John A. Sizemore and Lucy Morton Sizemore. She grew up and lived most of her life in the town of Clay. Starting at age 19 in a one-room school, the youngest teacher in the county, Janie taught for 31 years in Clay and Kanawha County Schools. She began her college education at Marshall College and attended Glenville State, where she met her husband, Emil. She graduated at age 55 from Morris Harvey College. Janie is survived by sons, John and wife, Judy of Charleston, Martin (Buck) and wife, Ellie of Westminster, CA, and Jeffrey and wife, Patty of Charleston; daughters, Reba of Idylwild, CA, and Krista and husband, Ray Green of Charleston; sister, Mary Hensley of Wallback; 24 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. The service will be held at l:00 p.m. Saturday, December 3, at the Elk River Nazarene Church, 143 Dutch Road, Charleston, with the Rev. Randy Ledsome officiating. Dec 1 2005  Billie Jane Pierson Zegeer, 76, of Clay, died Nov. 29, 2005 at Charleston's CAMC General Hospital following complications from lung cancer. Zegeer was a landlady and Clay United Methodist Church member. She was a former member of the Clay County Library Board of Trustees and Clay Town Council.   She traveled extensively with her late husband, Arthur W. Zegeer. While living in the Republic of South Africa 1977-80, she served as editor of a community newsletter. Zegeer attended West Virginia University.    She is survived by her children: Michael D. (Marsha) Zegeer of Cincinnati, Richard B. (Marge Michau) Zegeer of Kanawha City and Jill Zegeer (Patrick) Dunn of Tuscaloosa, Ala. She was preceded in death by her parents, W.S.D. and J.A. Pierson of Clay. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston. Nov 29 2005Mr. William Paul Rogers, 87, of Wallback, WV, died Sunday, November 27, 2005, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston, WV, after a valiant battle with cancer.  Born on May 19, 1918, he was the son of the late Adam Sheridan and Maggie Keeney Rogers. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one son, William Paul Rogers, Jr., who was killed in action in the Vietnam War in 1967. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Mrs. Gladys Rogers; his sons, Ransford Rogers and his wife, July, of Columbus, OH, James Rogers and his wife, Margaret of Tacoma, WA, Randall Rogers and his wife Marianne of Coolville, OH; daughter, Mrs. Paula Cline and her husband Bill of Elkview; sister, Betty Mooney of Charleston; brother, Eugene Rogers of Akron, OH; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.  Mr. Rogers was a heavy equipment operator and part time farmer for many years and retired from Vecillio & Grogan and the United Steelworkers of America Local 714614 in 1983. During his career in construction, he helped build many of the interstate highways we all enjoy today.  He was heavily involved in his community throughout his lifetime having been one of the founders of the Clay-Roane Public Service District that brought water service to western Clay County and eastern Roane County. He served on its Board of Directors for several years having held a variety of offices. He was also involved in the creation and construction of the Clay County Health Clinic that helped bring quality health care to the people of Clay and surrounding counties. He served on the Board of Directors of Multi-Cap of Charleston and as a delegate to the Silver Haired Legislature. He and his wife, Gladys, organized the first 4-H club in Clay County.  He was a Christian and faithfully attended the Wallback Methodist Church in Wallback, where he served as its Superintendent for seventeen years. Mr. Rogers practiced his religion everyday and was always there when his family or someone in the community needed help.   The family of William Paul Rogers would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the staff of Hubbard Hospice House and to the doctors, nurses and other staff at Charleston Area Medical Center (fifth floor) for their compassionate care given to him in his hour of need.   In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Rogers? name to either Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston, WV 25311 or to the Wallback Methodist Church, Mr. David Wayne, Treasurer, Wallback, WV 25285.   Funeral service will be 11 am Thursday, December 1, 2005, at Wallback Methodist Church, with Minister Ralph Keener officiating. Nov 27 2005  Ernest Monroe "Blackjack" Nicholas, 74, of Clay entered into rest on November 23, 2005, at Hubbard Hospice House in Kanawha City.  Born on March 15, 1931, in Clay County, he was the son of the late Richard and Elsie (Triplett) Nicholas. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, John ?Orda? Nicholas. He was a truck driver for Buffalo Trucking Company, a school bus driver, worked and retired from Carl Kelley Paving, Inc., out of Parkersburg, WV. On October 8, 1960, he married Phyllis Jean McGlothlin, his wife of 45 years, who survives him. They had three children together, Diane (Donald) Woody of Procious, Mike Nicholas of Pinch, and Melissa (Hansford) Justice, II, of Clay; two sisters, Edna (Bob) Schamp of Cleveland, OH and Betty Walker of Alliance, OH; two grandchildren, David and Megan Woody, both of Procious; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was a wonderful, loving husband, father and brother. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and loved him. Graveside service will be 11 am Monday, November 28, 2005, at the Triplett Cemetery, Triplett Ridge, with Minister Wayne Litton and Minister Rick Canfield officiating. There will be no visitation. Nov 25 2005  Robert Elzia "Bob" Killingsworth, 57, of Ivydale, entered into rest November 23, 2005, at home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  Born on July 19, 1948, in Elsworth, PA, he was the son of the late Orville and Savannah Killingsworth. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Lindy, Albert and Junior, and sister, Mary Jane Kirkland. He was the owner/operator on Bob?s Muffler Shop in Ivydale, and a US Navy Veteran of the Vietnam era.  Survivors include his beloved wife and best friend, Marni Killingsworth of Ivydale; beloved step-daughter, Holly Cunningham of Ivydale; daughter, Crystal Tanner of Ivydale; sister, Betty Steinstraw of Mobile, AL; granddaughter, Alexia Tanner of Ivydale, and his beloved dog, Paco. Nov 15 2005   Morgan Dorr Skidmore, 93, of Ivydale, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on November 11, 2005, at Braxton County Memorial Hospital, Gassaway, W.Va., after an extended illness.   He was born April 22, 1912, to the late Frank and Eva Berry Skidmore. He was a retired professional driver for Greyhound Coach Company with over 30 years of service, and a fifty-year member of Amalgamated Transit Union. Dorr was a member of Morrison Ridge United Methodist Church.    He is survived by one son, Larry Skidmore of Grandlodge, Mich.; Dorr's companion, Mavis Stout of Ivydale, W.Va.; sister-in-law, Myrtle Skidmore of Jane Lew, W.Va.; and his grandchildren, Keith Skidmore, Jeff Skidmore, Rick Skidmore, Beth Skidmore, and Debbie Dunn.   The funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 15, 2005, with the Rev. Sept 13 2005 Jordan Varney of Maysel, "Bravest of All" 15 year old beloved son , brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, friend, ended his 9 year battle with brain cancer Sunday September 11, 2005. He is now in peace, the people he leaves behind will forever be better people for knowing him. He will live in our hearts forever, he has taught us to make the most of what you have, don?t complain, be happy and do what you have to do. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by son  Frederick, brothers Richard, Charles, Paul, and Kenneth.  Clarence was a retired coal miner from Central Appalachian Coal Company, a World War II Veteran, member of the Clay Volunteer Fire Department, and the Reserve Deputies of Clay for 29 years. After retirement, Clarence worked as a handyman and helped those in need, especially the widows.  He is survived by his wife Zella Jean of 56 years, daughters Linda Dawson of Hartland, Patricia of Elkview, sons Thomas of Perry OH, and James of Valley Fork, sisters Leah Galyiano of Atco, NJ, Hazel Totten of King George, VA, Tressie White of Shrewsbury, brothers Harold of Stone Mountain, GA, Jarrell of Woodlawn VA, and Leonard of Clay. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.  Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at Fairview Baptist Temple, Two Run, with minister Dennis Legg officiating. July 14 2005  William Garrett King, 72, of Valley Fork, died July 11, 2005 at home. He was born on October 19, 1932, to the late Robert Preston and Mammie Ethel Woodrum King. He retired from Columbia Gas Transmission Corp., Coco, after 34 years of service, was an Army Veteran, a member of Local OCAW-Pace, and Local Union 628. July 10 2005  Evelyn Carol Backus, 68, of Valley Fork, Clay County, passed away July 8, 2005, at Roane General Hospital after an extended illness. Born on September 23, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Raleigh and Rebecca Mae Salisbury Summers. She retired as a cook from Roane General Hospital after 18 years of service. She was a retired teacher from the Clay County Board of Education, a former member of the National Education Association, and a member of the Lizemores United Methodist Church. July 6 2005  Waldo C. Boggs, 77, died after a short illness in Cleveland, Ohio on July 4, 2005. Mr. Boggs was born in Big Otter, WV on May 30, 1928, to Owen and Emma Boggs. June 20 2005   Dewey Franklin Sharp, 90, eldest son of the late Marion and Della Jackson Sharp, died Friday, June 17, 2005, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital, Buckeye, after a long illness. He had been under the care of Pocahontas Center for the past 2½ years. Born May 23, 1915, at Fairview, Dewey spent his earlier years working in numerous logging camps in and around Pocahontas County before serving his country in World War II. There, he met and married Irene Lipps of Meridian, Miss. He returned to Pocahontas County where he lived the remainder of his life. Dewey served as Buckskin Scout camp ranger from 1960 to 1986, in a job he truly loved, meeting people and developing friendships that would last a lifetime. Dewey was a longtime member of the Marlinton Rotary Club, Greenbrier Valley Soil Conservation District and various other volunteer positions throughout Pocahontas County. Preceding him in death were his wife, Irene; brothers, Denny, Dock, Oley and Wade; and sisters, Ruby McCarty, Lillian Nizolek and Geraldine Wilfong. Survivors include a brother, Willie “Bill” Sharp of Richmond, Va.; along with many nieces and nephews. The Rev. Robert Mann will hold funeral services at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at VanReenen Funeral Home, Marlinton. He received the purple heart and other medals. May 14 2005  Norman D. Wilson, 82, of Clay, WV, passed away peacefully, May 13, 2005, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.  He was the youngest son of Loring and Della Ward Wilson. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, James (Jim P), and two sisters, Lucy Wilson and Roxie Knapp. Surviving is one sister, Sarah Bergman of Lewisville, North Carolina.  He was born at Strange Creek, West Virginia, graduated from Clay County High School, and was a WWII Army Veteran, having served as a Staff Sergeant with the 45th Infantry Division, the 180th Regiment. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star for bravery at Anzio Beachhead.   Upon his return home, he was employed by the B C & G Railroad, was a self employed building contractor, and owned and operated The Clay Lumber Company, retiring in 1979. He established and operated the Locust Mobile Manor. He served two terms as the Mayor of Clay. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8366 at Gauley Bridge. He was instrumental in the institution and organization of VFW Post 4419 in Clay, and served several terms as Post Commander and other various post positions. He served as the 9th District Commander, achieving ?All State Team Post Commander for 1974-1975?. He was very proud of obtaining the distinguished award of Outstanding District Commander 1978-1979?.  He was married to Alice Wilson for over 51 years. Preceded in death by his wife, he leaves behind to mourn his passing, two daughters, Susie Metheney (Jerry) of Akron, OH, and Lori Burford (Lee) of Clay, WV. He also leaves two grandchildren, Sherry L. Swisher (Scott) of Akron and Michael Knopp Jr. (Sandra) of Clay. DALZELL, SC -- David Charles Wilson, 63, husband of Sandra L. Wilson, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter, SC.  Mr. Wilson formerly was a resident of Widen,WV and graduated from Widen High School in Clay County. Mr. Wilson was born in Charleston, W.Va., the son of Reva T. Wilson and the late Charles A. Wilson. He retired from the United States Air Force after 26 years of service and later served as the general manager of the Genesis Center. He was also a longtime member of the Masonic Organization, serving at Lodge No. 364. In addition to his wife and mother, Mr. Wilson is survived by one son, Leslie C. Wilson and his wife, Dana, of Ft. Hauchucha, Ariz.; two daughters, Kimberly Wilson and Donna M. Moseley and her husband, Clint, of Camden; five grandchildren, Andrew Wilson, Charlotte Wilson, Christiana Wilson, Lindsey Moseley and Warren Moseley; two brothers, Roscoe Wilson and his wife, Billie, of Rosmon, N.C., and Jack Wilson of Gassaway, W.Va.   Memorial services with full military honors were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald John McLaughlin, 78, of Procious, died Thursday, April 28, 2005 at home after a long illness.  He was the son of the late Ralph Newton and Stella Maud Cutlip McLaughlin.  He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Stewart and Wilber McLaughlin.
Don was a World War II and Korean Conflict Marine veteran.  He was also a former employee of Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, employee of Marathon Industries Bridgeport and a former employee of Union Carbide. He is survived by his wife of 48 years Evelyne Eagle McLaughlin; sons Donald Bradley McLaughlin of Clay and Rodney Allen McLaughlin of Procious; daughter Ellyn Dawne McLaughlin of Annapolis, Maryland; brother James McLaughlin of St. Mary’s, WV; sisters Shonette Shearer of Phoenix, Arizona and Nell Foreman of Charleston, WV; grandchildren Miranda Rae and Caleb Ian McLaughlin.   Funeral service was Saturday, April 30, 2005 at Matics Funeral Home with the Reverend Dennis Legg officiating.  Burial was in the A.J. April 20 2005 ( Belated) William Haskell Campbell, 78, of Union passed away Wednesday morning april 20 2005 at the Greenbrier VAlley Medical Center following ashort illness. He was born in Union WV May 13 1926 a son of the late William Clarence and Ella McNeil Campbell. He spent his entire life at Hillcrest, the home his father and grandfather built. He was preceeded in death by a sister, Genevieve Sarrell and three brothers, Edward, John, and James. April 8 2005   Russell Brooks Legg, Sr., 92, of Indore entered into rest on April 6, 2005, at CAMC-Memorial Division. He was born on September 1, 1912, to Bernard Breckenridge Legg and Lilly Cline Legg. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Monica Marie Moore Legg; daughter, Carolyn Cruikshank; infant son, Frederick Wayne Legg, five brothers and four sisters.
For many years, he was owner/operator of Brooks Legg General Merchandise Store at Indore. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a deacon in the Indore Baptist Church, a master turkey hunter, and had hunted big game in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. He had also served on the Clay County Board of Education for 14 years.  He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-laws, Dr. R. Brooks Legg, Jr. and Diann of Lizemores and Kenneth Duane Legg, Sr. and Kathy of Indore; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and James Blaney, son-in-law, Telford Cruikshank of Big Otter; grandchildren, T. March 31  2005   Henry F. (Bud) Smith, 73, of South Charleston, entered into rest on March 31, 2005, at Beverly Health Care Center, Glasgow.  He was born on Dec. 31, 1931, in Clay County to the late Oscar Henry and Blanch Hosey Smith. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, James Albert Smith; daughter, Debra Lynn Thornton, and granddaughter, Molly Francys Smith. He attended Sutton High School. He served in the Korean War in 1950-1951 in five campaigns, receiving the Silver Star, the nation's third highest decoration for bravery, the Bronze Star with V device for valor, the Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters and the Korean Campaign Metal with 5 bronze stars. He was a survivor of the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir. He was a maintenance machinist for Ford Motor Company, a car salesman for Telford?s Chevrolet, Clay, and Patrick Plaza Dodge, Charleston. He attended Big Otter Baptist Church, was a member of the VFW and the Fraternal Order of Police, South Charleston. March 28 2005 Sarah Evelyn Cutlip Cook, 63 of Litchfield, OH, passed away after a long illness, Saturday, March 26, 2005 at Medina County Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents Jack & Mary Cutlip of Clay, WV. Evelyn is survived by her husband of 38 years, Clyde Cook of Litchfield, OH. Her son, Curtis Cook of Indianapolis, IN; her daughters, Mary Gibson of Litchfield, OH, Roberta Payne of Perrysville, OH and Sandra Kraus of Parma Heights, OH and 8 grandchildren.  Also surviving Evelyn are her sisters, Avis Davis of Lansing, IA and Freda Coad of Procious, WV and her brothers, James Cutlip of LaCrosse, WI and Delmar Cutlip of Cleveland, OH.   Viewing will be Monday, March 28th from 7pm-9pm at Parker Funeral Home in Lodi, OH.  The funeral service will be Tuesday, March 28th at Parker Funeral Home at 11am with burial following at Litchfield Cemetary in Litchfield, OH.
 

March 23 2005  Orval Elijah Brown, 97, died Sunday, March 20,2005, at Dovie?s Retirement Home in Walton, WV.  Orval, Clay County?s ?Wild Man?, grew up on Sycamore Creek at Indore, WV. He was a veteran of the US Army and a WWII veteran of the US Navy. Orval is preceded in death by his parents, John Logan and Elizabeth ?Lizzie? (Mitchell) Brown; his brothers, Alva and Thad; and his sisters, Erma Brown Siers and Doris Brown Dorsey.  Surviving family members include a sister-in-law, Amma Brown of Indore, a brother-in-law, Tilden Siers of Nicholas County, six nephews, eleven nieces, and hundreds of cousins and friends. March 23 2005   Daniel Patrick "Pat" Burdette, 53, of Procious entered into rest on March 21, 2005, at CAMC-Memorial Division after a long illness.  He was born on June 6, 1951, in Clay County to the late James P. and Anna Emily Burdette. Pat was a retired laborer for the WV Department of Highways, and attended the Freewill Baptist Church of Pisgah. March 21  2005   Mae June Jarvis, Eagle, 84, formerly of Widen, Clay County, went to be with the Lord Friday March 18, 2005 at Laurel Nursing Center, Ivydale, WV, after an extended illness. Her family and many friends, referred to her as Mamaw Mae. Born Dec. 16,1920 at Dingy, in Braxton County, she resided in Widen and the surrounding area for many years before moving to Lodi, Ohio, where she worked as a screw machine operator. March 15 2005   Anna H. Morris, 92, of Ivydale,entered into rest on Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at home.  She was born on Nov. 13, 1912, at Strange Creek, WV, to the late Willis and Lula Hill. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Dallas, and an infant son, Lowell Ferrell Morris.  She was a school teacher for 41 years for the Clay County Board of Education, and attended the Otter Vale Advent Christian Church. During World War II, she and her husband lived and worked in Akron, OH, and Baltimore, MD, contributing to the war effort.  She is survived by her sons; John D. Morris of Ivydale, and David Morris of Ohio; brother, John Hill of Texas; 2 grandchildren; care givers, Brenda Sirk and Woodrow and Lula Cutlip. A special thanks to her grandson, John Amos, who has devoted his time the last two years to be at his grandmother’s side whenever and in whatever capacity he was needed. March 15 2005 Teddy Mark Taylor of Bickmore, passed away Monday, March 14, 2005 at home. He was a retired logger. Teddy is survived by his wife Judy; 3 sons Teddy Mark. March 11 2005   Gail Andrew Samples, 84, of Procious, entered into rest on Thursday, March 10, 2005, at CAMC-Memorial Hospital after a long illness.  He was born on March 28, 1920, in Clendenin to the late Lonnie B. and Bessie Hart Samples. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in August 2004; two grandsons, Jeffrey Scott Samples and Roger Bub Samples, Jr; brother, Glen Samples, and sister, Helen Markle.  He was the retired owner of Samples Texaco, a retired mail carrier for the U. S. Postal Service, and a member of Horner’s Fork Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Jack and Mary Samples, Peggy and Oscar King, Teddy and Beth Samples, and David and Connie Samples, all of Procious, Roger and Paula Samples  of Hometown, WV, Nancy and Larry Beezel of Clarksburg, Lonnie and Lita Samples of Bomont, and Bobbi and Kenneth Nichols of Cincinnati, OH; step-mother, Goldie Samples of Procious; brothers, Lester Samples of Elkview, Kester Samples of Grafton, OH, Romie Samples of Charleston, Lonnie B. Feb 22 2005   Janice Grace (Metz) Morris of Wallback entered into rest February 19, 2005.  She was born September 11, 1934 in Walker WV, to the late Dwight and Syntha Metz.  She is survived by her husband Charles L. Morris, 3 sons Charles Morris Jr. of Butler, PA, Roger Morris of Clay WV, Ronnie Morris of Ivydale, WV  2 Daughters Brenda Duncan of Bartlett Ohio, and Susan Fields of Ivydale, WV, 13 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 2 brothers Paul Metz, and Dale Gene Metz of St. Marys WV, 1 sister Opal Burroughs of Belmont, WV. She was preceded in death by 2 sisters, 1 brother, and 2 Infant Children.  Janice was a retired cook from Ivydale elementary with 20 years of service. Feb 19 2005  Willis “Dusty” Dolan Rhodes, 70, of Lorain, OH, died Feb. 17, 2005, at his home after a lengthy illness.  He was born Sept. 26, 1934, in Widen to the late Jay Dolan and Daisy Bell  Rhodes. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean Rhodes in 1997, and infant daughter, Susan Diona Rhodes in 1970.  Dusty moved to Lorain over 40 years ago. He was employed at Kroger’s for nearly 30 years, and began working at Rite-Aid Corp. in 1985, retiring in 2002.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and playing poker and bowling.  Survivors include his sons, Jay D. Rhodes of Lorain, OH, David W. Rhodes of Parma Heights, and Robert D. Rhodes of Lorain; daughter, Deborah A. Phillips of Vermilion, OH; 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; five brothers; one sister, many nieces and nephews.  Graveside service will be 12:30 p.m. Monday, February 21, 2005, at the Rhodes Cemetery, Enoch.  Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 12 noon on Monday at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay.
 

FEb 16 2005   James Arthur Moore, 73, of Ansted, entered into rest on February 16, 2005,  at CAMC-Memorial Division.   He was born on Feb. 22, 1931, at Smithers to the late James Irvin and Pearlie Moore. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Janet M. Moore.
He was retired from Rochester Products, an Army Veteran, and a deacon of Evergreen Baptist Church, Ansted.    He is survived by his sons; Billy A. Moore of Smithers, Terry A. Moore of Charleston, Kenneth W. Moore of Owingsville, KY, Douglas R. Moore of Jacksonville, FL, Ervin J. Moore at home; daughters, Kathy A. Boykin of Sylvania, GA, Karen J. Gordon and Leah J. Feb 16 2005  Roy N. Hamrick, 81, of North Palm Beach, FL, died Monday, February 14, 2005.
He was born on February 17, 1924, in Ivydale, WV.  He served his country in the U. S. Navy during WWII, completing two tours of duty, first in the South Pacific and then Japan.  He was married to the late Phyllis June Lambert of Bud, WV. They moved to Riviera Beach, FL, in 1955, where he owned Roy’s Barber Shop in Lake Park, Western Auto of Indiantown, and the Island Queen Motel and apartments on Singer Island. Roy had a lifelong love of bowling, competing in league play at Garden Lanes, Riviera Lanes and Verdes in West Palm Beach. He progressed to Senior bowling champion.
Surviving are his beloved daughter, Terri Lynn Hopper; three adored grandchildren, Thomas Martin Hopper II, Elissa Roi Hopper, and Brianna Lynne Hopper; his favorite baby sister, Betty Friend and husband, Lantie, of Ivydale; James A. and Mary Lambert of Moundsville, WV, Bobby and Gaye Murray of Spring Lake, NC, Jim and Virgie Woods of Yellowsprings, OH.  He was endearingly known as “Uncle Roy” to many nieces and nephews. Feb 11 2005    Beatrice M. Tucker, 87, of Williamsburg, VA, formerly of Maysel, WV, passed peacefully into death on Thursday, February 10, 2005, at Hospice House in Williamsburg, VA.  She was born on October 15, 1917, at Maysel to the late Elizabeth Woodrum Butcher and Ballard Preston Tucker. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Lucille Estep; brothers, Thomas and Robert Lee Butcher, all of Clay County, and two grandchildren, Richard and James Baldwin.
She was a homemaker and mother figure to all who came in contact with her.  Beatrice had a full life, having lived and traveled throughout Europe and the United States with her daughter and son-in-law. She is remembered for her positive outlook on life, her desire to help all in need, and the love and friendship she freely gave to all. She is missed.  She is survived by one son, Ernest L. Wyatt and wife, Susie, of Fredericksburg, VA; two daughters, Marlene Kern and friend, Maurice, of Massillon, OH, and Jessie Rush and husband, Jarret, with whom she spent her last 29 years; grandchildren, Lisa (Wyatt) Karr, Donna Wyatt, Timothy and Roger Kern, and Esther Rush; brother, Clarence Butcher of Florida and sister, Lucretia Mullins of Blue Knob Rd., Clay.  Graveside funeral service will be held at 2:30 pm on Sunday, February 13, 2005, at Clay Memorial Gardens, Clay. FEb 10 2005   Stanley Lee Samples, 80, of Valley Fork, went to be with the Lord on Feb. 8, 2005. He was born on September 28, 1924, to the late Raymond and Pearl Samples. He was a mechanic by trade, a faithful Christian by choice, and attended Wings of Deliverance. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Martha Samples; brother, George James Samples (Bucky) of Valley City, OH; sisters, Opal Cathy Mullins of Laurel Nursing Home, Big Otter, Ella Hanshaw of Maysel, Ethel Mullins of Grassy Creek, Lizemores, and Pearl (Pug) DeBoard of Fredericksburg, OH; children, Ona Shamblin and husband, Darrel,  of Procious, Vincent Samples of Sutton; step-son, Robert Waugh and his wife, Melodie, of Marietta, OH; grandchildren, Darrel Shamblin, Jr. (D.J.) and Jeremy Shamblin, both of Procious, Vincent Samples, Jr. (JR) of Wooster, OH, and several nieces and nephews.  He will be sadly missed by many friends and family. Jan 18 2005   Judith Faye Cottrell, 64, of Bickmore, entered into rest on Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at CAMC-Memorial Division.   She was born on May 20, 1940, in Wadsworth, OH, to the late David Henry and Blanche Rock.  She was a cook for Tudor’s Biscuit World.  Survivors include her husband, Harold Glenn Cottrell of Bickmore; sons, William Benjamin Keith of NC, Robert Dale Keith of Rittman, OH, and Harold Cottrell, Jr. of Bickmore; daughters, Brenda Sue Moore of Bickmore, Tina Marie McKinney of Clay, and Glenda Faye Paige of Clay; brothers, David Arthur Rock of Phoenix, AZ, and James Rock of Ohio; sisters, Nancy Jane Patton of NC, and Beverly Sue Osborne of OH; 15 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren. Jan 15 2005   Vera Dean Holcomb, 71, of Lizemores entered into rest on Thusday, January 13, 2005, at home.  She was born on November 27, 1933, at Ovapa to the late Vernon Ferris and Lena Gladys Osborne. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Holcomb; daughter, Doreen Holcomb; son, Barry Holcomb; sisters, Sylvia Williams, and Betty Taylor.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Lizemores Church of the Nazarene.  She is survived by her brother, Kenneth Osborne of Dixie; sisters, Kathleen Morris of Bickmore and Bonnie Hill of Belle; step-son, Donald Holcomb of Bickmore; uncle, John Butler of Nebo; aunt, Maggie Drake of Mansfield, OH; several nieces and nephews.  Funeral service will be 2 pm Sunday, January 16, 2005,at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, with Pastor Robert Thomas officiating. Jan 12 2005   Nykan Ezekiel Detamore, beloved son of Shawn and Jessica Lynn (Taylor) Detamore, returned to his Lord on Friday, January 7, 2005, at Columbus Children’s Hospital while waiting for a heart transplant.  He was born on May 9, 2004, at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA.  Nykan is survived by his parents, Shawn and Jessica of Westerville, OH; grandparents, Olive Moore of New Martinsville, WV, Gregory Detamore of Columbus, OH, Larry and Elaine Taylor of Lizemores, WV; great-grandparents, Jane Moore of Arnold, MD, Constance Dodson of Cambridge, MD, Escar and Betty Taylor of Lizemores, WV and many aunts, uncles, cousins and relatives.  Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2005 at the Lizemores Church of the Nazarene with Minister Robert Thomas officiating . Jan 12 2005   Dennie Allen Pringle, 54, of Ivydale, WV, passed away January 9, 2005 at home.
He was born February 16, 1950, to the late Roland and Verna Pringle of Ivydale.  He was a truck driver for Great American Lines, Ravenswood; an Army Veteran of the Vietnam Era; and of the Baptist faith.
Dennie is survived by his wife ,Wilma Pringle of Ivydale; daughters, Angel Hanshaw of Ivydale, and Elizabeth Meadows of Clay; stepsons, Jimmy Barnette of Clay, and John Sears, Jr. of Ivydale; stepdaughters, Sandy Sears of Widen, and Jennifer Belt of Camden on Gauley; brothers, Kenneth Pringle and John Pringle, both of Ivydale; sisters, Alice Robinette of Hamlet, NC, Velma Estrathers of Omar, WV, and Valerie Holcomb of Ivydale, 10 grandchildren.  Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, with Minister Dave Beckel officiating.
